Is there any good deal on just Cable?
I have a HTPC that blows your Fetch rubbish out of the water.
My mobile deal gives me all the calls I need already 20 times over.
I just want the unlimited cable for about $70 a month. I'd pay $80ish for contract free.
I'll supply all my own gear too and set it all up.

    • +2

One can only dream about unlimited for $70 a month. :(

      • Well if you have a home phone, this bindle give you unlimited for $70-$75 a month, doesn't it? You aren't paying for an extra line rental even here with optus (at least if you are on optus surface cable phone, not going over telstra). I don't even actually have a telstra cable hooked to my house.

So I have two questions, these are not clear because they are not listed in the original post.

Does this include a cable modem with wifi?

Does this include the 33 channels in the entertainment bundle?

  • Just got off live chat and got the $90 bundle with free speed bolt on pack so paying $81 a month (after 10% discount due to Post-Paid Mobile plan I have). Pretty wrapped with offer coming from TPG!

    • Have you received a call to book in your installation time yet?

    • I called TPG and they mention that my contract with them has ended, however I need to tell the that I am switching 30 days in advanced. What should I do?

  • I switched from Telstra Cable to Exetel ADSL and now pay $49 a month (saving $40 a month). Didn't notice much of a speed drop (we watch Netflix and Hulu+ exclusively).
Hopefully a lot more people on my street move to this cable offer and free up my exchange :)

PS: The reason why ADSL works for me is because I'm only about 2km from the exchange. So if your close to the exchange you don't really get a huge benefit with moving to cable. I had to learn that the hard way by paying for 2 years on contract. Now I have Hulu, Netflix and ADSL and still pay only $70 a month all up.

If you use the landline though then this is a pretty good deal.

    • I'm 1.3km from exchange and only get no more than 5mbs. Maybe this one works for me.

  • If you are a long time Optus cable customer you may want to check your modem if upgrading to the faster speed packs. I spoke to technical support today and was told my modem could only handle speeds of up to 50 mbs. If I want the 100 mbs speed I will need a new modem. Optus will sell me this for "the discounted rate of 89$".

    • That's interesting as I was quoted $70 to replace our modem initially. But … I was then offered a free WiFi modem as a 'good will gesture'. Ended up getting the modem and the premium speed pack for free.

  • So to the people who got the speed pack added on for free, what proof do we have of this since its done either over the phone or through live chat?

Say they 'forget' to add the speed pack, we call up demanding it since it was promised, they'll check but see no reference to it? What then? Ombudsman?

I have a reference number after agreeing to the terms and conditions but thats it, dont even have the guys name who offered the deal Forgot to ask ;(

    • +1

I asked for a transcript of the Online Chat to be emailed to me, and also received a short text message confirming me joining the plan with Speed Pack ( and my post paid mobile bundle discount of 10%)

    • You can't do much over the phone but live chat has an option where you can save/print the chat log.

      • Sigh, mine closed while I was on the phone agreeing to the deal. Is there anyway to get a copy now?

No confirmation message yet for me, was told to wait for another call to set up the installation date

    • I ask for reference no (which she gave me her employee id) and ask for transcript chat ID

    • +1

Once I spotted this bargain I jumped on it. Later on I read that I could get a 'speed pack'. I thought I had missed out because I didn't ask for it in the beginning. I jumped on chat again, spoke with a rep and asked for the 'speed pack'. After the chat it was enabled in moments :)

  • +1

Thanks, now to speak to Telstra to offer something similar

    • +1

They'll offer the same for $200 more.

      • Actually they compete pretty well, I got my current bundle on a deal thanks to Optus, it's best to do it through chat service rather than ringing.

        • what deal did you end up getting?

        • @mrshorty: 200GB, Unlimited local calls and Mobiles + some small features $93 mth, that was about 2 years ago

        • @TRENT86:

Oh right - thanks! Was hoping Telstra might come up with something similar for this current offer :)

        • @mrshorty:
I just tried with online chat. The best they could offer was a free modem, otherwise the prices on their internet, so nowhere near the same ball park.

  • Anyone know if the phone line in this deal goes through the cable or through the normal telephone line?

    • it goes to my normal telephone line, even tho`, they also create a new phone line clsoe to my modem for me.

      • Just looked at my online transcript and they say phoneline will be through the cable line.
Me "the telephone line I would like to change I have naked dsl on it. the other telephone line is my housemates"
Optus " Not to worry, we won't be using the telephone line"
Me"  ok but the deal says home phone is included "
Optus" Yes, that will be via Cable line as well :) "
Me "ok so you wont be touching the existing phonelines
Optus "Right. That will remain as it is"

        Is this true?

        • you just plug your phone in to the cable modem and thats it.Its basically VOIP.

        • @techno2000:
Thanks man, I was a bit worried there.

        • @Scarecrow2012: The 'box' installed on the outside wall incorporates an ATA. The cable service has always been a version of VOIP with Optus. We have been with them since 2007 and ours is VOIP. If you have an ADSL line then it is not the same as it is via a copper pair line.

I am currently with Optus cable on $115/month + $20 speedpack (on my current plan, they offer me 2 months free + free 1 year speedpack as credit.)

do livechat, first CS transfer me to services team, and then change my plan to the new plan and also give me free speed pack. I just save $45/months. thank you OP

btw, my new plan start next year 01/01/2015

    • yep, i got the same offer

    • Was on month to month so was paying $115 + $10 (for month to month) = $125 pm with no speedpack

Now paying $90 with free speed pack and entertainment package (which I didn't have before).

      Thanks OP!

ps new plan also meant to start on 1/1/2015

  • Im getting conflicting responses from Optus

Im on adsl atm and waiting for the cable installation date, I've been told that I need to change my phone number once on cable on the first live chat. The second one live chat says I can keep it…? Not sure what to make of it atm

    • if your phone no was VOIP no, your no. will be change.

  • went from $115 to $90 and they gave me 100mbps for free. daaayum

  • Damnnn the speedpack was never mentioned when I switched…………

    • Did you ask for it? If you didn't ask then they will normally not offer it.

  • What sort of information did you guys need to get it done over live chat? I'm going to have to do it at work tomorrow, each time they tried to transfer me, it just timed out and when I was instructed to call, the sales team decided to transfer me to the "closed" services team. Fun.

    • Usually they'll have to call you anyway to read out the automated terms and conditions in which you just state your name and answer yes to a few questions.

I asked about the deal online along with the speed pack and if I could get it for free, the rep checked my address since I dont have cable yet. Gave my phone number and the same person called me 2 minutes later to finalise the deal

    • Live chat will open a side window on the computer for you to enter details of the account holder or the account number. So you will need this information. If you have an active Direct Debit facility in place then it goes straight through.

  • +2

Service team goes home 7PM. Don't try it online or via the phone until tomorrow 7AM when they come back. I found this out the hard way after 2 online chat sessions.

  • Was tempted by Optus but given most people state between 10-30mbps with ~5mbps at peak time… what's the point?
We pay $60 a month for about 13MB (but always at least 10-11mbps) with TPG. Yeah latency is not the best but it's reliable as hell.

Whirlpool forums are just a mess of people complaining about massive overcontention at Optus and this deal is only going to make it worse!

    • I guess depends on the area? Just tried speedtest.net and got 12 ms ping, 18.87 mbps down and 0.42 mbps up, this is without speed pack (upload speed sucks on Optus)

      • I'm with you, never had a problem so it must be area dependent

  • I was spewing when I first saw this today, as I signed up for the $115 plan literally yesterday. But I talked to Optus via on-line chat this evening (first to sales, then transferred to customer service), and they were happy to switch me to the $90 plan, starting 1 Jan. The only down-side is the longer contract period - 24 months vs 12 months.

  • Thanks OP! Just upgraded from a legacy $55p/m plan for 50/70Gb limits (plus $30 for phone, so $85 all up). Good to finally get off quotas and not have to worry about streaming some quality NBA leaguepass during peak hours!

Phone rep was a bit confused at first, but got there in the end. Threw in the speed pack too after getting approval for it (had to ask for it)

Comes into effect 01/01/15 like most others

  • my experience,i've been with optus for 3 years, and now with telstra. optus cable was very unstable after 6pm, and constantly disconnected from server while i playing diablo 3. with Telstra, all good so far.

    • I am sure Telstra have the best of everything, but they are expensive…

  • Well just got off a chat with an Optus customer representative (removed names to protect identity :) and signed up to the plan )

… lots of chat prior about porting telstra phone number across yadda yadda …

You:just to clarify before I submit (sorry I'm being cautious).. my understanding is that the current optus DOCSIS setup only allows ~2mbit upload speed..
You:from what I read the speed is around 100/2.5 to 100/3 where the NBN version is 100/40 .. can I just clarify please?
Optus Rep:The $90 cable bundle includes the $20 speed pack. It gives you up to 100 Mbps download and 50Mbps upload.
Optus Rep:The speed pack is free, we will add that.
Optus Rep:Just let me know after you finish it, I will add the speed pack.

    … continued waffle from me

So technically if I get the optus cable and I don't get upto 50mbit can I claim false advertising, even when the customer (me) asked to clarify?

  • +1

Does any one know what happens at the end of 24 months contract? Does the price go back up to $115?

    • the NBN will be rolled out by then.

      • What that has to do with the price ?

        • there will be other deals available and providers will be scrambling to offer bundles at better prices.

      • +1

Lol!!! That cracked me up. I'm in a suburb 5k from the cbd and as it isn't a marginal seat, we aren't even on the nbn plan. I get a "no planned date" on the nbn site.

        • it's no planned date everywhere on NBN website now.

    • It stays at the same price

  • Just did online chat with rep and given free 100Mbps speed bolt also!

  • Okay so the online live rep confirmed that I will be getting the free speed pack like most of you's.

Did anyone get an email confirmation to show the speed pack is included? My email does not show this in the plan..

Confirming to have plan changed to $90 Unlimited Cable Bundle from 01/01/15 on 24 months contract

The $90 Unlimited Cable Bundle (Minimum total cost over 24 months $2160) includes:
UNLIMITED international calls to landlines in 25 selected countries and mobiles in 7 selected countries
OPTUS TV with Fetch + Entertainment Package
    UNLIMITED data

UNLIMITED standard local, national, mobile and 13/1300 calls
    • rep told me I'll get a call later and can confirm with optus again then. Did you give your details and order number to rep?

      • I was told the same, that I'll get a call later at around 5 pm but no one called me on my mobile. I got the deal over the phone after talking to the same person on the live chat

No email confirmation or anything for me, did they send you a confirmation email to your optus webmail address?

        • It was sent to my Hotmail because I requested it. If you didn't, it would go to your optus email account

      • Yeah I gave the online rep my details and phone number and she got an approval from her manager for the free speed pack for me. So it was confirmed over live chat but I don't see it on the email confirmation. Just wondering if it's the same for everyone else…

  • Speedpack was never mentioned when I switched. I'm going to try my luck tomorrow and ask them if it can still be added.

    • i did it after and i got it, so good luck :)

  • +1

FWIW, the speed pack doesn't really do much in practice. It might show up quicker in speed tests, but if most of your content is overseas so you won't notice a difference.

That said, if it's free then why not :)

    • +1

I know you were voted down for that comment (not by me) and I'll probably be voted down too, but I tend to agree. If the upload speeds were quicker, to me that would be more useful (I run online backups) - but the uploads are the same speed.

And like you said, for overseas content, you probably won't notice

      • +1

In fact if your neighbourhood is congested like mine is ,you wont even get high speeds for local content.
Simple way to check is to just do a speed test on www.speedtest.net

The default test will do a speed test from your local server.
In my case i get 30 mbps for this during non peak hours but get measly speeds of 5 mbps during peak hours
Right now i am getting 22 mbps on speed test for local server.

But you can also select a server overseas and do the speed test.
I selected a server in the USA and got just a measly 3.46 mbps and its not even peak time here.

If you cannot get 30 mbps on those tests then you wont see a benefit from the 100 mbps speed pack.

        • Yeah that is right isn't it, the cable works peer to peer through all subscribers in a group, not house to exchange. So the more congested the local group is, the slower possible speed.

      • So does Speed Pack work (and if so how does it work?) or were we sold a bottle of snake oil?

        • I haven't used Optus yet, but from what I've been reading the local content can get some advantages, but if your content is overseas during peak hours, you won't be getting good speeds at all. I just hope it's better than my very average Exetel ADSL speed.

        • +1

Well i am now on the new plan and have the speed pack applied.
i am getting 80 mbps in speed tests for local server and 20 mbps for speed test to US server and 15 mbps to singapore server.
Quite happy with that as its definetly an improvement over my previous speeds.

But its not peak time yet!!
I will try doing tests at peak time aka 6 pm to 10 pm and update on the result.

        • Well i did a couple of speed tests at 8 pm and on the whole, its still giving pretty good speeds. Local server is 50 mbps, Singapore is still 15 mbps and surprisingly US server is still giving 15 to 20 mbps.
          Quite satisfying indeed.

        • @techno2000:

How about well seeded torrent speeds?

        • @HTID09:

my total torrent speeds are not exceeding 3 mbps. Looks like optus is throttling torrents at least during peak periods anyway.Perfectly understandable.I wouldnt want anyone's torrents to spoil my netflix/hulu streaming etc either.
I was getting 10 mbps speeds on torrents earlier in the afternoon but quite far away from 100 mbps. Still i am pretty satisfied. Now hopefully all those people on free speedpacks dont break the system LOL

  • Just signed up over phone. Upgraded from month to month. I asked what speed it was. She said 100mbs which is standard. Didn't even have to ask for it. Got her to send a confirmation email stating this to be sure. Thanks for the tip!

    • Same here. Asked about getting speed pack for free and was told it's already in it and it was 100mbs - I didn't think of asking for confirmation email though… Got a confirmation SMS of order though and have asked for that in writing via reply SMS at least.
Am already paying that amount for 500GB cable with them and homeline so am happy with this bundle.

    • How long did you guys wait on the phone just this morning?

I just got this on live chat:

David R: its a 2 hour wait online and calls to customer care who can change this for you

      • +2

I had 2 chats and a call going at once. Didnt have time to mess about. Chat transfer timed out and they were hopeless anyway. Didn't even know about the free 100mbs. Just call them. Had to wait 20mins but she was great.

        • Optus should have clearly mentioned the speed in the CIS instead of all this confusion. The lady i spoke to now insisted that the 90$ plan includes 100 mbps speed and no need of any upgrade to premium speed. I doubt it though. She got tired of me and transferred me to tech support to "clear my doubts".

        • Online chat wasn't working for me, so I just called. Straight through, rep was quick and thorough (as they can be at least), 100mbs was confirmed, and I signed up. Great deal, and given a local gets awesome speed on their Optus cable, I'm hoping it will be the same for us.

        • Tech support says that this plan has 30 mbps speeds! sigh!! Round and Round we go on the merry go round.

        • @techno2000:

Currently on the phone to them.
The first lady said it comes with 30mbps so I asked for the speed pack to be included for free if I recontract right now (currently out of contract) and she asked her supervisor who said it couldn't be done.

Now I've been put through to retention and the lady said as far as she knows, the premium speed pack is already included in the new deal.
I'm going to ask for that to be given to me in writing via email.

Edit: Now she came back and said it's actually not included and that they can't offer the speed pack for free because they don't have the codes for it yet since it's a new plan.
I told her that many people have been given the free speed packs and then she said "oh let me see.. oh yeah I guess we can do that".

Got the 100mbps speed pack added and asked for her to email me confirmation that it will be included.
To end the call she said that the FetchTV box will be sent to me shortly too, which is a bit odd since I was upgrading from my FetchTV included bundle already. Maybe I can have two in the house now!

        • @unco:
Yes get it in writing and a reference number as well.

        • +1

          @techno2000:

          Woohoo just got email confirmation.

          Thank you for calling Optus!

This is to confirm that your plan has been changed to the $90 Unlmited Cable bundle plan >with unlimited data, international calls, local, national, 13/1300 and mobile calls + Fetch >tv with Entertainment pack as well as premium speed pack.

This will take effect next billing, 01/01/2015.

          Thanks!

        • +1

So next i get on to a customer service person and call got disconnected as i was calling on voip and apparently my voip provider disconnects after an hour on the phone.

I call back again and get a overseas guy who hasnt even heard of this new plan.
After wasting 15 minutes with him he transfers me to a guy in australia who says he cant see my previous sales order at all!!The previous sales guy apparently hadnt done anything?? He again goes through the entire signing up process with me including doing the recording again !!
This time i ensure that he includes the 100 mbps speed pack and it was on the recording as well and i got him to send an email as well.
My previous plan was only broadband and nothing else.

Previous sales guy never informed of any tech required but this sales guy booked in a tech for me .I dont know why a tech is required to activate voip but anyway…..

So i hope thats the end of all this drama. I have been on the phone for the last 1.5 hours.

        • @unco:

How long did it take for the confirmation email to be sent?
Just got off the phone too, still no confirmation email.

Did you ask them to specifically mention the speed pack on there as well. Damn I forgot to say that, hope they add it

        • @techno2000:
Keep an eye out for that email, it's our ticket to getting it fixed up if they fail to add it on.
Wouldn't be holding my breath that it'll be done right after the first experience you had.

        • @techno2000:

Wow so Im not the only one that this has happened to. The same thing with me, the idiot I spoke to yesterday never put the order in so they couldnt see it in their system. He never gave me an installation date as well

          Sigh

        • @HTID09:
I got the email about 5 minutes after I got off the phone.
I asked if she could send me an email confirming I had the premium speed pack added on and she said ok.
Then I followed up with "Can I give you my email address?" just to get the point across that I would be waiting for it.
After I gave my email I asked for her name again.

        • @unco:

Wow 5 minutes huh, lucky you. Still nothing for me and its been at least 10 minutes already
Wouldnt be surprised if they never send it

I was also told they'd send the confirmation or some sort by post which should arrive in a bout 5 days

  • Still havent got my confirmation email or a call or anything. Must have sent it to the optus webmail address which I never use

  • Just changed over. Bundle with free 100Mbps speed pack and 10% discount

    • 10% with Optus mobile?

    • Tried to get some sort of loyalty discount as this morning, but they wouldn't do it. Explained how I've been with them for 7 years, plus a decade back at my mum's place, years ago. What did you say to them? …if you don't mind :)
