D-Link 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch $25 Delivered @ Wireless1 (or $23.75 Price Matched at OW)

580

I was in the market for an Ethernet switch following this failed deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/177605). I found this D-Link 8 Port Ethernet Switch (DGS-1008A) at Wireless1. I had it price matched at Officeworks (who have it listed as $39.95 http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/d-link-dgs-10…) for $23.75

If you only need a 5 port, then Wireless1 has the D-Link 5 Port Ethernet Switch (DGS-1005A) http://www.wireless1.com.au/d-link-dgs-1005a-5-port-gigabit-… for $19. You can get this price matched at Officeworks as well as they have it for $29 (http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/d-link-5-port…)

Quick Overview

This Switch has 8 x Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports | Gigabit Ethernet Data Transfer Rates of up to 2000 Mbps (full duplex) | 16 Gbps switching fabric
Details

The DGS-1008A 8-Port Gigabit Switch is part of D-Link’s new series of SOHO devices that make use of D-Link’s Green Technology, providing energy savings, reduced heat, and a longer product life without sacrificing performance or functionality. It provides eight Gigabit ports for easy expansion of your network and a quick way to upgrade your network to Gigabit connectivity. An energy-efficient power adapter (Energy Star Level V qualified), minimized use of harmful substances (RoHS compliant), and recyclable packaging make this switch truly environmentally friendly.

Fast and Reliable Networking

The D-Link DGS-1008A 8-Port Gigabit Switch creates a blazing fast network for your office, as its Gigabit Ethernet ports provide high-speed wired connections for up to eight PCs or other devices. The DGS-1008A also features QoS, which prioritizes network traffic so that time-sensitive data is delivered efficiently, even during bursts of high data traffic. It’s stylish, easy-to-use, and comes IPv6-ready for a reliable network today and tomorrow.

Conserve Energy

The 8-Port Gigabit Switch helps you conserve energy automatically through several methods. It automatically powers down ports that have no link, allowing the switch to save a substantial amount of power by cutting power usage for unused ports. It also adjusts the amount of power supplied to a port according to the length of the connected Ethernet cable.

Environmentally-friendly

The 8-Port Gigabit Switch was designed with the environment in mind, and is compliant with Energy Star Level V, as well as with the stringent CEC and MEPS regulations that require the use of energy efficient power adapters. The switch is also built to follow RoHS standards to minimize the use of hazardous materials, and uses recyclable packaging that helps reduce waste, complying with the WEEE directive.

EDIT: The rep has been kind enough to include free shipping

Maybe worthwhile putting Gigabit in the title - standard price for 10/100 but not a bad deal for 1Gbit.

    • Done

    • The MSY 8 Port switch in the link above is the older model. Not sure what difference (other than shape) between the old and new models though.

  • Also price match is only good in NSW because outside of that they will add shiping

    • I guess the UMart link below will solve the NSW issue as Umart have stores in other states.

    • But they don't have the 5 port one.

    Thanks needed it. Good buy

  • Good finding, I'm looking for 8 GigE with Wifi any help please…

    • +4

Usually you get wi-fi with a router not a switch.

I've never heard of a switch that comes with wi-fi.

    • I wanted one as well for my new wired network in my house. There's very few wifi routers with 8 ports around and those that exist aren't cheap (around $200).

For now I have my my modem connected to my router, my router connected to my switch and all the devices coming out of the wall into the switch. Not the cleanest set up but it works.

Will probably get an 8 port router/modem at some point just to neaten things up at some point though.

Here is a cheap one: http://www.mwave.com.au/product/wd-my-net-wireless-n900-hd-d…
        $38.
Old model, but works well. You can use it as a 7-port switch + WAP.
(Not to be confused with the 4-port model with internal HDD.)

Thanks for that. Reviews aren't too bad either. For $40 worth a punt.

Thank you Manic, that is exactly what I was looking for :-) great price too :-))

        • I can recommend these. Excellent wireless coverage in our old big stone house and the extra ports are a bonus. Well worth the money.

  • Just ordered this from Umart over the weekend for $24 and couldn't find the same model at Officework to price match with.

    Wasted 25 cents!!!! :(

Hi guys! Thanks for your support!

I'm happy to say that we are adding FREE SHIPPING for the D-Link DGS-1008A as an added bonus to say thank you :)

    • Hello rep, you got any cheap managed gigabit switches? Or anything you'd throw free shipping on?

    • +1

Hi Rep, any cheap wireless access points or routers with AP modes?

    • +3

For the record I would have preferred to buy from you (rather than Officeworks) as I like to support companies which provide competitive prices. However, Parramatta was a bit too far for me to travel.

Thanks for the Free Shipping offer too!

Stuff OW. Purchased from Wireless 1. Thanks for the free shipping.

        • +1

          Yep done.

    • Where was this deal a week ago when I ordered my 8 port switch from elsewhere!!!

Edit: If you have a deal for a decent 8 port gigabit router with wifi that'd be ace.

  • I have the 5-port one - the thing is really small. I have it hidden behind my Blu-ray player feeding the player, TV and HTPC.

    • It totally depends on how you define small. IMO, its bulky for my like.

      • +5

Its Tiny.. It cannot be any smaller due to the physical side of the 5 ethernet ports.

Seriously if its too bulky for you, you cant find smaller!!

Thanks rep. Ordered one to replace my old 10/100 switch. Free shipping got me. Cheers.

A TP-Link TL-SG108 or Netgear GS108 on special would be most welcome.

  • +2

Upvoted coz rep chipped in with free shipping for us "professionals"

  • I have a DGS-1008D gigabit switch I bought a couple of years ago. Has worked perfectly - supposedly green/low power etc etc. Haven't really checked but it does run cool at least. Would recommend although not sure how they've gone "back" to an A version…

    D-link?

    Noooooooooooooope.

    • I can tell you their customer service is very good. I have only ever had 1 issue before, and that's when the router purchased in this deal died. I contacted their CS and within a few days they had sent out a brand new Wireless AC1750 dual band gigabit cloud router (DIR-868L) as a replacement.

  • They also have the Netgear 8 port for $26 free shipping here

  • I bought one of these for $25 pickup last year, not a bad deal for shipping inclusive I suppose.
Good switch, I got it so I could also run my PS4 via lan cable.
It runs cool and the LED's aren't too bright

  • Very nice deal for 8port switch. Maybe I will try one. Thanks !

  • I have a newbie question. I have an existing 8 port switch and have run out of slots. Can I use this switch to extend my capacity or do I need a new bigger switch?

    • +2

you can't be that much of a newbie if you've already loaded up an 8 port switch!

      • +1

I'm good at plugging things in. Whether they work or not once they are plugged in is a different story

    • I guess you can just add the second switch by connecting to the router but I am not sure both switch will show up as single lan or two seperate lan.

    • +1

Yes, switch just extends the LAN. You can put multiple switches in a star or daisy-chain.
You can always use a router as a switch too. Just ignore the WAN port and disable the DHCP server.

      • Cheers thanks for the advice. Going to get this deal as temp measure until I decide what sort of 24 port switch I need to upgrade to.

        • 24-port? Couldn't your employer get an IT guy to sort it out?

        • +2

@manic: I looked in the mirror and asked him. All I got was dumb look.

        • @teardrops21:
yeah, I know. joke. For home, people tend to have lots of wifi these days. 24-port is into not-so-small business territory.

        • @manic: I am anti WiFi, I wrap my head in aluminium foil to deflect the radiation…he he

Nah it is for a work set up, I only need about 10 ports at the moment but looking to put in some PoE cameras in and a bit of future capacity.

        • @teardrops21:

          Test it with another mirror.
          That one might be faulty.

    • +1

As others have said yes, you can extend by daisy chaining another switch, however you get to a point quickly where the advantages of scaling your capacity by adding switches progressively, gives way to practicality.

Keep in mind when you daisy chain, you do not get the switching fabric you get in say a 16 port switch, so any devices on the second switch will have to share the single 1Gbps link to the first switch that its daisy chained to..

Basically if you're needing 16 ports, you might be better off buying a new single 16 port switch (or above and potentially a managed switch) and getting benefits of a single consolidated unit and use your existing switch as a backup stored away safely somewhere…

Not that I'm in any way biased towards HP, but I really like my HP 16 port switch (its not cheap at $99 but its solid, durable and built like a tank with peace of mind of lifetime warranty).

      • Thanks for the advice. I understand the possible congestion with the daisy chain, however its only for low bandwidth applications and only temp measure until I get a 24 port. But I am procrastinating as I think Ill need a managed switch with poe.

    • Yes you can, but most likely all gears connected on your new switch will share the 1000 Gbps bandwidth.

  • Any good suggestion for a PoE swithh ?

  • Thanks. At the price including delivery it's exactly what I wanted.
