They should spend their time developing a usable Android app.
I had to uninstall without watching a thing.

    • +2

It's just become available for Sony mobiles, so I've only just started using it. Works fine for me - may have been updated since your uninstall.

    • +2

Ive been using it on my S4 and TabS with no problems at all.

    • +1

I haven't had any problems with the Android app with Stan. It was shite on the first day, but since the updates I haven't encountered any issues.

    • +2

Is your Android device rooted? (unlocked, not aussie slang). Stan doesnt work on rooted android devices from reviews in the google play store.

      • Yes one rooted TAB and a Huawei G526 (non rooted).
Pretty standard equipment. Works on neither.

    • Works fine for me (Nexus 5, custom Android 5.1 ROM). Had to install Xposed and RootCloak though.

  • +2

Too late my 1 month ended and I can't use this.

    • You can, as long as you don't mind throwing away your last month's history and your watch list. Just use a new login.

      • I assume I can't use the same credit card?

        • You should be able to.

        • -1

You can as I just did it… Changed my name slightly, different DOB and different postcode too

        • +2

          @singlefished:

I believe that is called fraud

        • +6

          @dosada:
anyone who uses their real name and dob when signing up for net services is pretty stupid.
security is usually pretty poor and your key data is likely to be harvested with chances of identity theft.

why should some 2bit website require all these details.
as long as you can remember what you typed for account recovery purposes you are fine.

government sites r a different matter.

give out your full name, dob, main email and address at your peril!

"I believe that is called fraud"

Geez man, who brought the Grinch?!?

        • does that mean we could go trail forever :)?

        • +2

@legelas: you can trail forever and trial till they offer free trial.

  • +3

Keen to try this out. What shows can I watch on Stan that aren't on Netflix?

    • +6

      Better Call Saul

      • +2

Netflix UK has it also… but that requires VPN or dynamic DNS.

        • Think you mean a smart DNS :-)

        • -1

@Porthos: or VPN just works fine

        • @legelas: I was referring to drosair using the term 'dynamic' DNS when they meant to say 'smart' DNS.

        • @Porthos: Well yes and no. It still needs to be dynamic as it needs to update your external IP address within its system to be able to then do its "smart" stuff

        • @drosair: Ok then, use a service like No-IP (a dynamic DNS provider) and let us know how far you get using Netflix UK :-)

        • +1

          @drosair:

Actually no. Dynamic DNS already has a universally-recognised meaning and it is not the same as these smart DNS services:

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_DNS

        • @drosair: For example, users who have a permanent IP wouldn't need Dynamic DNS to access Netflix's other regions. They would use a Smart DNS or VPN service.

        • @Porthos: Not the same thing. I did say that it does other stuff too.

Anyway, my original post was to say that there are other methods of watching Better Call Saul and that you can watch it on Netflix. You basically did one of those "grammar check" style comments that everybody loves. Good for you!

By the way, you're referring to Dyanamic DNS and Smart DNS, not 'dynamic' dns and 'smart' dns.

        • @dazweeja: dynamic DNS versus Dynamic DNS

        • @drosair:

You're really clutching at straws now mate. The meaning is the same for "dynamic DNS" which, by the way, they use 8 times on that page with a lower case "d".

        • -5

@dazweeja: Anyone who references a Wiki page loses credibility straight away. Okay, it's not Dynamic DNS with a capital D. Are you happy now? I was just trying to provide some help to the original commenter. God bless.

        • +1

          @drosair:

Porthos was being helpful by pointing out the correct term. You were being unhelpful by not graciously accepting his correction and instead continuing your attempt to redefine a universally-understood term for no particular reason that I could see. If txn25 had gone out and bought a dynamic DNS service on your recommendation (Googling would have probably led him to the $5 starter plan from DynDNS), I doubt he'd be thanking you right now. Obviously your original intentions were good but next time it would be better for everyone if you just accepted the correction and moved on.

        • @dazweeja: Well said :-)

        • @dazweeja: The original poster would have asked more questions if interested so being vague/incorrect was not a big deal.

The way he responded (with the smiley face) seemed to be him trying to be smart first and helpful second. If that was not the intention then I apologise.

      • Anything else? Already seen it.

        • Not a subscriber so can't check but they did have Dig although if you wait it's coming to SBS shortly. I believe Stan also had season 6 of Community

  • +1

When does this end? I don't have time to watch right now so I'd like to extend the time i have by signing up as late as possible.

    • They never indicated an expiry date unfortunately.

  • Did the one month trial not much at all I was interested in hulu plus & us Netflix has ruined me for Aussie one pony outfits.

    • How much is Hulu? doesn't show me anything because i am not over a proxy. What is the quality like?

      • Getflix.com.au (proxy/Geo-unblocker) is $3/Month and hulu plus (I managed to score a dozen 3 month trials for chromecast I purchased, normal $8US a month)
        http://somethingtostream.com/hulu/shows/
It does have adds even with plus, the main difference is hulu is free but you can only watch the last few episodes
Hulu plus its full seasons in most cases.

  • +1

    stan sux compared to Netflix.

content wise and considering it's a free trial is only good thing about stan, but being unable to watch it without using my computer and sending to chromecast without buffering is a bad bad thing. The lack of apps to be able to play this, and the fact their service buffers terribly and has lag, is a no go for me. i would rather pay $10 per month for netflix then have a free subscription to something i can't watch.

    • +3

I've had stan for a month now and I've never had lag or buffering (beyond 3 seconds max at the start) and I run in HD quality. Sounds more like your internet.

      • I have had Stan more then a month now and the app crashes sometimes and sending to chromecast does not always works and when it does sometimes it does so just for minutes. I was able to watch 3 episodes of Saul in the last couple of days without problems so they might have fixed it.

    • According to this report Stan has more content than Netflix AU:

      http://www.smh.com.au/business/media-and-marketing/stan-netf…

      • +2

        quality over quantity

    • +1

I've never had any buffering and HD all the time.

  • +1

I used it for a while and didn't experience too much buffer, but the bitrate did fluctuate quite a lot…

The one thing which kinda sucks more, is that you need to register your devices with the service, and once you have 6 in there you can only change one each month.

I can understand the limit of 6 devices, but why not open up the changing of devices whenever you like. If I happen to test on 2 different browsers, thats 2 devices used… lame…

  • +5

Can't use Stan on rooted phones unfortunately, even though Netflix works fine. Cancelled my free trial within an hour of signing up for it.

    • Really? Thats rude.. I suppose the Windows browser client stops working if you are logged in with admin rights…

      • +1

i tried using windows and silverlight to get this working, gave up pretty quickly

    • If your phone is rooted, you can install Xposed and RootCloak. Even works on Android 5.1.

      • I went to install the Xposed framework but it gave me some error about AliyunOS so I decided against it :\

        • Xposed won't work on AliyunOS as it's not strictly Android (different compiler).

      • TBH I can't really be bothered. If they don't want my business that's fine, happy with Netflix. Appreciate the advice though.

  • +1

Prepared to give them a few more months to build up their library…. Works fine on my Aldi android tablet and streaming with chromecast has always worked well for us without the buffering issues some people have mentioned.

  • One month is more than enough to discover how bad it is.

  • +1

Good timing … my Netflix subscription just finished yesterday (I subscribed for a while but since Netflix started in Australia I only had buffering issues and it got unusable for me and I had to cancel).

I signed up to Stan and so far I got a perfect picture in HD. Not as convenient as I need to use AirPlay via my iPhone to the AppleTV (instead of a the AppleTV app). Some different movies on there … found the Lego Movie and lots of James Bond movies I haven't seen …

    Thanks OP

  • This will (somewhat) help ease the pain with the loss of my HBO Go account today. Had it for about a year, and only cost me about $5…spewin'

  • +3

Im willing to give Stan a chance as its an Australian startup company. Netflix wasnt what it was today when it first launched and you have to admit that Stan is better than Presto and Quickflix.

I liked that they had all the Matrix movies on there and 2 of the Hobbit movies. They also have some good distributor deals in the works and apparently the imitation game is coming.

    • +1

But I do admit, they need a PS3 App or equivalent STAT! It seems a bit of a misfire to not have the option. Chromecast is fine for me though.

Kinda wish I could see the library better too. If I didnt know all the Underbellys were on there by searching, im not sure how I would have found them otherwise.

  • +2

Stan is an okay streaming website. I never had connection issues. There's a shallow pond of content available, and there are very few exclusives that are actually worth the price tag.

I have a few issues with Stan
    • No subtitle support
    • No support for hardware "it's coming soon guys!!"
    • Seasons that aren't full (e.g southpark only had 4 seasons when I last checked)
    • Content not rolled out fast enough

I was hesitant in cancelling my subscription as I like to support up and coming services, however; I wasn't able to justify the price when I already have a year's worth of Hulu.

It's a good service if you've never used online streaming but that's where it ends.

    • +5

I dont understand people going on about price tags. Its $10 for a month, $2.50 a week. You watch one movie per week and thats the same as blockbuster.

Its not going to have a chance to get good if people dont give it a chance.

      • +2

These streaming services are unbelievably cheap aren't they.

      • No. I'm not complaining about price - $10 a month is incredibly cheap when you factor in other provider's and Foxtel. I just mean I'm unable to justify having money direct debited out of my account when I only signed up to watch one show and there's no other content that tickles my fancy (I've seen most of the programs available on Stan), why allow them to syphon money out of my account when I already have other accounts for other websites that I use?

    • +1

Similar situation. I want to support because of Aussie content and, somewhat, Aussie company instead of sending my cash direct to US.

Another issue: No Surround Sound on Chromecast. Netflix do (DD+).

  • Cheers OP ;)

  • I have had all the US streaming services for a number of years too. I use Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Chromecast to quench my thirst for home entertainment. There is always room for a good Aussie service to add local content to the mix however a native Stan app for Apple TV or smart TV would be much better than using a Chromecast. Stan is not a bad deal for new cord cutters - no muck around DNS or VPN stuff to boot! This code works a treat. Thanks

Thanks to OP peterpeterpumpkin for this freebie.

Just pointing out that signup requires giving your credit card details, and after two months will auto-renew at $10/month. Here's what it said for me tonight:

Cancel online anytime. No lock-in contracts. After your special 2 month promotion period ends
on 22/6/2015 you will be charged $10 per month unless you cancel online prior to this date.

No problems on Bigpond cable with stuttering, etc. Didn't try the Android app.

However the content looks pretty blah (Benny Hill - really?). I'm reminded of the bargain bin at the local video store. Can't see me renewing even at only $10/month.

    But still, thanks again.

  • I wouldn't mind trialing stan but they have repeatedly ignored my attempts to reach out to them regarding why my ipad (un-jailbroken) is detected as jailbroken and thus won't run. They don't seem to give a shit.

  • Do people use a fake credit card generator for these trials? I remember hearing about them in another deal but not sure where to find one

    • Not sure if that's possible. Usually websites charge $1 to make sure you have the necessary funds and then refund you afterwards.

    • +1

I use a Load & Go card with next to no credit on it. It's about all those cards are good for, but it's worth it. If I decide to stay with a service, I change to another card.

    • +1

Or just put a reminder in your calendar to cancel the subscription a day before it ends.

  • Anywhere can buy Google Chromecast until $39?

  • +1

Stan seriously needs to fix the buffering issues that I don't get on netflix and the need to use MS Silverlight.(even on a mac!) …

I cancelled my subscription because of the constant buffering issues

    • +1

They are now using HTML5 if you use chrome as your browser.

      • Thanks to BigglesKDH for the tip.

However, when I try Chrome (Bigpond cable) I get the spinning wheel and then "Sorry, your request has taken too long", whereas Firefox and Silverlight work fine. Dunno why.

  • I literally signed up for a 1 month trial yesterday…annoying

  • I don't receive Google Chromecast discount code after sign up. What should I do now?

  • how can i get 2 months free trial and $39 chromecast?

  • Not working after putting the promo code.

    error -
Sorry, but we couldn't redeem a voucher with that code
Something's up on our end. We're looking into it

  • Code not working.. should have done it last night but cbf going to get my CC

  • Also unable to redeem code. Error states….Sorry, but we couldn't redeem a voucher with that code
Looks like that voucher is unavailable.

  • Looks like deal has expired, code not working for me either

  • Same here!

  • I don't think I could use a product that endorses Rebel Wilson.

  • I looked at this last night - opted not to register for it. Don't see much point at present given the limited ways of watching at present (ie.no ps3/4 apps / no compatibility with WDTV Live etc.)

The only reason I would have grabbed a trial would be to watch the last two eps of better call saul, but not worth giving over my contact info.

  • The phrase "Appears code no longer working" seems ironic to me, I feel exactly the same way about the Stan service except I don't think it ever worked.
I tested it on a Mac and on an IPad - crashed the mac (first time an app has done that) and the iPad app just hung.
Uninstalled both (BTW they don't provide an uninstall for the Mac and it took a bit of research thru conflicting info to figure out how to completely remove it).
Lodged a ticket with Stan letting them know what I think of their software stability/testing and technology choice (Silverlight an deprecated platform [looks at heavens]).
To their credit that did call back the next day, but admit that they're using unsupported code nd are in the process of trying to re-write it.
It's a shame they inflict this on their users in the meantime, but I guess having sat on their hands so long, they suddenly feel the urgency to put something out as Netflix comes to town.
Pity they seem to have no idea what they're doing, and/or care.

  • Boo… should've done it last night. At least one of my friends I forwarded this to got in this morning, so not all is lost.

    • Meh, i filled out form then noticed cant download onto my smart tv.

Too much mucking around for me, it could of be 1 year free, no app for tv i'm over it.

Must be crap if i cant find it on my tv or samsung apps

  • Meh. Won't work on my jailbroken iDevice. Thankfully that's why it's a free trial. Free for me to cancel straight away now.

  • I just got my Chromecast and I have to said I am very disappointed with the steaming quality..super slow buffing and not HD picture :(.

It is possible steam video file on my laptop to TV with Chromecast? It will be good if someone know can teach me..

    Thanks!

    • I found the easiest way to watch local content stored on a pc is to set up Plex on the pc, then use the Plex app on your phone to cast it to the Chromecast.

With the movie / tv posters and synopsis and ratings etc on Plex, it virtually looks like you are accessing Netflix!
