Google Chromecast $24.50 @ Officeworks

9020

Went into an office works store today to buy a google chromecast and it was $24.50

The Google Chromecast connects directly to the HDMI port on your TV and allows you to use a smartphone, tablet or computer to play your favourite entertainment onto your TV. Use your portable devices like a remote control and search, browse, play, pause or rewind your videos on your TV screen.
The Chromecast plugs into your TV via a HDMI port then uses your home WiFi network to connect to your other devices.
You can cast any website onto your TV using a Windows PC or Mac computer or mirror what's on your Android smartphone or tablet.
There are also a variety of Chromecast apps available to help you customise your experience.
You can also choose your favourite images to be a backdrop on your TV when you're not casting.
The Google Chromecast is compatible with Android smartphones, Android tablets, iPhones, iPads, Macs and Windows PCs.

Also available on the Officeworks eBay store

Looks like the ebay listing has been removed?

  • +1

ozbargained…not available now on website or ebay store…may be pricing error..hopefully they would honour the 2 that i managed to buy

  • EXPIRED.

    "Sorry…
Something went wrong with the page you were looking for."

My checkout was failing with an address error so I closed my browser and when I came back the chromecast has disappeared from officeworks websites

    • happened to me, then Officeworks sent an email confirming the purchase, weird, nearly bought the 2nd one by mistake

  • Looks like the deal is expired :(

  • Got 1. Thanks op.
Another impulse shopping for this week

  • Eek, the links no longer work (ebay or officeworks site) - has this been ozbargained already?!

  • Deal ended in ebay as well

  • How long does it take for office works to contact me for C&C?

  • +1

what do ppl use this for mainly?

  • +1

is this the most overrated tech device?

    • +2

i find that i use it everyday now, it saved me endless effort (and wear/tear) plugging the HDMI cable from my laptop to the TV.

  • Bought right before the listing was removed on eBay. Hopefully I manage to get one.

  • New to this.

Can I first mirror my android phone then play local videos? Why do I have to use apps like Plex?

    Thanks.

    • Im new to chromecast too but you should be able to mirror your phone to play local videos. I'll be using the plex app to connect to my server so chromecast can act as a middle man. Media server <——-> Android phone ———> Chromecast ———-> Non-smart TV

      • so mirroring is just playing what i see on my phone, while plex is like a media manager on my computer? and i can use my phone as a remote to select media in plex to cast onto my tv?

        • Yes so the media would be installed on a the PC and the phone would work as a remote. In my case i have a dedicated media server (ReadyNas) where all my audio and videos are stored. I could stand corrected on how this work but this is how i have understood it.

  • I have pretty old TVs none old plasmas both around 7 yrs old both have hdmi slots or slot but used up but on one got one of those things can't remember what they are called to allow me extra slots and able to select from it,my tvs have are not smart TVs but I am set up with three Apple TVs one in kids bedroom another one in each lounge/living area where I have Netflix us and can't stream stuff from my iPad to Apple TV.
Now if I do get these meaning the don't contact me to say out of stock what else can I do that make this even better than what I already have.
I have android phone and also pc I want to get the most out of this thing but not mess up say my phone or iPad or say computer as probably a lot of stuff out there not safe to use these days.
As these have cost much more in past did not see any point with already having Apple TVs but since I can get two for almost same price of one in ln past I thought why not give it a go,just refuse to get Foxtel which I think is a bit of a rip off.

  • Bought one before the deal expired.
Havent got any email for click and collect.
    Hope they honour it..

    Good steal at this price.

My confirmation took about 30min to arrive. GL

      • Did your order showed up on the my order section of the website.
I cannot see it listed over there as well.

        • Same here, under the order section its completely blank. I did however receive a confirmation email.

        • +1

          @AtomicHero: Thanks mate!
Will have to wait with fingers crossed..

        • Yes, 30 minutes for confirmation to arrive but order status page updated immediately with order number. Clicking into order shows usual expected info, 1 on backorder.

        • @CLoSeR:
Yeah odd how my account page is blank, tested on multiple browsers in case it was a plugin/code error. I paid with debit card, not sure if that gives a delayed update due to bank clearance.

        • @AtomicHero:

I paid with Paypal, debit CC.

        • @CLoSeR: I did pay with paypal. I havent got confirmation email so far.
          Not looking great!

I just talked to them over the phone, more stock will be coming tmr morning on a big truck.

    • Is it going to be the same price?

      • not sure about that…

    • +6

      ozbargain the truck

  • Thanks OP; have wanted one for a while.

  • I got confirmation on click and collect but I suppose means nothing the store might not have any or they have but could just say they don't.

    • Check order status, mine says one backorder.

    • according to another post on here they called to ask about it and was told stock would be ordered in from the warehouse to their click in collect location.

eBay offering was not 'removed' or 'expired'.

Probably in violation of eBay rules, someone 'ended' the listing:

"This listing was ended by the seller because there was an error in the listing".

There should always be enough stock to honour supply, buy it now items require finite stock to be assigned, etc.

What error? Oh, wait I know, it's the old 'we're a big company and everyone should understand rules for them are different to us; that we need not care for any individual, even if they area customer' approach: Staff know this better than anyone have no care/feel no obligation as a result.

  • My order states 11-13 day backorder, even though the page said they had stock in store.
EDIT: Just received the order confirmation. States delivery will be in two days.

    • Likewise, found it a little irritating but I'll live as it's a good price. Wonder if anyone was quick enough to get to JBHIFI and try a pricematch?

      • +1

I went in to JB (Sydney CBD) and they declined to price match

    • Website stock doesn't actually sync with real stock. So online it shows as stock, but none in store.

  • Did your order showed up on the my order section of the website.
I cannot see it listed over there as well.

  • Been interesting from OW for the past few days, EXTREMELY good deals from them then alot of refunds afterwards, :). Hoping that they will honour this deal.

  • Anyone figured out a way to cast Netflix with US content (via a VPN) to the TV with Chromecast? As soon as i switch to US netflix it just cuts out or says the title isn't available in my region.

    SO GARRR

You need to block the Google DNS server in your router.

      EDIT:

      Set a static route:

Destination IP Address Subnet Mask Gateway Status Edit
      8.8.8.8 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.1 Enable Edit
      8.8.4.4 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.1 Enable Edit
      208.67.222.222 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.1 Enable Edit
      209.244.0.3 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.1 Enable Edit

      • The problem I found with setting the block across the entire network was that it impacted the Android app from running, I had troubles switching profiles and it would take ages to login and display my shows. In my experience the Android app needs to see the Google DNS to work properly.

        • That's weird. Haven't had that issue. I suppose you could set a per device static route to alleviate that issue.

      • THANK YOU!!!

Will go home and try my best with my somewhat limited technical knowledge of routers.

      • +1

Better than blocking is using a DNS solution like uflix and redirecting Google DNS requests to your custom DNS.

        Like this:

        iptables -I PREROUTING -t nat -p udp -d 8.8.4.4 --dport 53 -j DNAT --to-destination 69.42.56.54
        iptables -I PREROUTING -t nat -p udp -d 8.8.8.8 --dport 53 -j DNAT --to-destination 69.42.56.54

I've found that the Netflix app loads instantly instead of taking several seconds (where it tries to contact the Google DNS, and then switches to your alternative).

    • +3

You need to block the Chromecast from accessing the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). I just used a simple firewall rule to block it and the Roku and it works fine. Good luck!

    • I think you need to use smart DNS solution and configure the DNS on your router. In that case your CC will get the smart DNS and hit the right NETFLIX server.

      • +1

The smart DNS services don't touch the Google or OpenDNS services (as they shouldn't) so you'll need to put a setting to block regardless.

        • OK, get your point. I was unaware of CC has built-in DNS pointing to Google.

Aaaaaaand its gone :( i missed out

  • +1

    I picked one up

There was 2 left at Campbelltown NSW Officeworks

    • +1

Better be one saved for me for Click and Collect from there ;) Still haven't recieved confirmation for pick up.

  • +2

About 30 of them at Keswick SA in the bargain bin

  • Are they still same price in store?

    • Yep, my store had $24.50 advertised on the bin.

  • +3
  • Darn it - missed out as went to check out stores in Sydney CBD - who all advised they are sold out and have a truckload of click and collect orders, and then I look up website and it's soldout.

Note to self, in future just call up first to see if available.

  • +1

no one in officeworks seems to know what it is !!

  • My two just got delivered to my door. :)

  • +4

Noooo…am late…Missed it..i must sue my work for not letting me save $15.. Can we get an ozbargain plugin for chrome with the pop up deals..

    • +1

      You mean $25?

      • haha..which way should i take it ? save 25 as i couldn't buy something which i don't need or save 25 from the usual $49 price tag..(i actually meant the latter but considered the regular price as $40 with sooo many sales happening around that mark)

    • sue them to FILTH

  • damn it!!!

  • Well…
I paid with credit card with a pick-up in store, I called the NSW store and said all shops are out of stock and probably couple of weeks to get stock in.
When I asked "Well I paid with my cc, should I get a refund then?" "Hmmm we call you back"…

  • +16

Please stop calling we are completely sold out country wide, lol, online is fully exhausted as well, but we will restock them very soon, as it is a high demand item, I can tell you it is on back order for some stores, cheers.

    • +10

Oh yeah, well maybe we just want to hear your sexy voice!

    • How long will this price last?
Will it be restocked at this price?

    • +1

Mods/OP should put this in the original post.

    • +2

That is just not true. I'm just back from the East Victoria Park store and they have at least a dozen of them next to the tills, but they are marked at full price. When I queried the price I was told they were only reduced for two hours earlier today.
To me that is, if not illegal advertising, certainly dishonest.

      • How is it illegal or dishonest if the fire sale was set for only 2hrs ?
Life is never fair is it.

    • Hey Rep, while you are at it may be do a special on iPad air as well?

    • Do Officeworks sell apostrophes?, cause you've clearly got those in stock:).

    • I called and was told it was a pricing error snd it will be up soon again but at the correct price.

    • Would have been nice for you to say that it would be restocked at a higher price……………

  • +1

ordered one - now the wait begins. expecting it to be ready for pick up before christmas this year

  • eventhough sold out, i still can't find the urge to spend on this………….sux one of the best deal yet………

    • I'm sure u can send them a cheque

  • +2

I paid for this using Paypal 4 hours ago and now it is refunded back from Officeworks. WTF

  • +1

is there some way to be alerted when new stock arrives, or when someone posts that there is here?

    • +2

check ozb every minute. EVERY minute

      • haha if only I wasn't human at all…

        • If only my iPhone wasn't in for a battery replacement under aplle warranty because apple f&$ked up the design of the baterry in the 5's.
I blame apple for my missing of this deal.
Not that i have a need for it but its cheap so can be resold to half wits

  • +1

    Just picked mine up. yay!

Dude at store says they sold out.

  • I must remember to checkout the elizabeth store at lunch tomorrow

    • Don't bother. From my experience half an hour ago, they won't honour that price even if they have plenty in stock.

  • +1

waits patiently for a new batch

actually really bummed i missed out.
