Google Chromecast $24.50 @ Officeworks

9020

Went into an office works store today to buy a google chromecast and it was $24.50

The Google Chromecast connects directly to the HDMI port on your TV and allows you to use a smartphone, tablet or computer to play your favourite entertainment onto your TV. Use your portable devices like a remote control and search, browse, play, pause or rewind your videos on your TV screen.
The Chromecast plugs into your TV via a HDMI port then uses your home WiFi network to connect to your other devices.
You can cast any website onto your TV using a Windows PC or Mac computer or mirror what's on your Android smartphone or tablet.
There are also a variety of Chromecast apps available to help you customise your experience.
You can also choose your favourite images to be a backdrop on your TV when you're not casting.
The Google Chromecast is compatible with Android smartphones, Android tablets, iPhones, iPads, Macs and Windows PCs.

Also available on the Officeworks eBay store

  • Thanks fergo747, picked up a couple.

  • Bought the last one from South Melbourne :-)

  • +2

There's a problem with the payment system. THe database is really screw up. I somehow can get another person's personal detail (email, address, name)

    • +1

Time to start up a new WikiLeaks scenario?

    • +2

yes i experienced the same, I thought my Paypal account got hacked -_-"

  • Payment system got OzBargained?

    Ebay link

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Google-Chromecast-/231588724040?p…

5.95 shipping and free shipping over 55 bucks.

    • +5

could have got it cheaper with Cashrewards 2% from $24.50 to $24.01. i could have saved an extra 49 cents T_T. the oz-bargainer in me is hurting at the moment.

    • good reason to use $50 voucher

    • Watch the shipping as it does change on your location. For instance for me even on ebay for this one it shows as 25.50

      • +1

Maybe they should ship it with Officeworks Mailman, it would work out cheaper

  • Wont let pay with CC. Page just refreshes. And paypal not sending codes to phone. Intermittent problem.

    Go figure.

    • no worries, all sorted. Answered security questions instead.

  • I heard chromecast 2 is coming very soon. Anyone?

    • +1

like anything new, let others find the bugs, and wait for the price to drop.
the current one is fine, not sure how they can improve apart from building into new TV's now….

      • Bugs on a google device with limited functionality. Riiiiight.

  • +1

Thanks OP. perfect time to use my $50 ebay giftcard. bought 2 chromecasts and a lemon spray for $1. and earned 2% cashrewards too :D

  • Just picked up 2. Everything is awesome. Thanks OP.

  • sweet, just bought four. :D thanks OP!

  • Potentially really stupid question (sorry!) but is it possible to just stream .mp4 and .avi files easily? Or are you restricted to streaming stuff via their service?

    • there are some non-official options to stream local files on your android device to the chromecast.
If you have a decent pc you can set up Plex and use that to stream anything to your chromecast.

    • Some media files will play fine in the chrome browser on pc just fine, then you can just stream the tab, works great for me and I use it often. Some files won't play in the browser though but it hasn't been too often personally.

      • +1

Thanks. Also thanks @Swornstar and @Scaregdearimasu

  • Brilliant deal! Thanks OP!

  • Been contemplating whether to get a chromecast or not at previous sale prices, finally took the bullet! Can't wait to try it out. Thanks op

  • These need a power source don't they, or can they suffice with a USB input? I don't want a power cable running down from my wall-mounted panel.

    • +1

They come with a wall power adapter like a mobile phone does as well as a usb cord.
Most modern tv's have usb ports on the back that supply enough electricity to the chromecast.

  • Save another 2% by using Cashrewards if buying though OW's ebay store

  • Been meaning to acquire one and finally did it. Thanks OP

  • +2

Obviously Office works isn't interested in selling this to regional residents. They want about $25 for delivery. In your dreams OW.

    • +1

Click and collect then pick up at your leisure. There click and collect section doesn't have a time limit or when you can pick up orders. I'm gonna wait about a month before I pick mine up. (since I know thats when I'll be going near it).

  • I'm wondering whether they're overstocked or the new one is coming out soon? or both..

Buying another anyway :-), cheers OP

  • +6

Long time Lurker for over 5 years… finally signed up. Excellent community.
    Great first Post OP.

  • So you can go and pick up straight away?
Order status says "dispatched" and 'awaiting allocation'

  • Awesome finally bought one, thanks!

  • +2

Wow, people are buying 50 at a time on eBay

    • +1

Yeah they will resell at 35-38 bucks.

      • +2

But at $38, eBay fees = $3.80, PayPal would be $1.60 or so plus cheapest Australia Post Parcel around $8 = a total of $13.40 in charges, plus $24.50 = $37.90.
Seems totally pointless selling on eBay. It must be cheaper wholesale for them and they have a B & M stores.

    • edit: 150
      t***b bought 100 lol

  • Can this mirror a Windows device w/o going through Chrome browser?

    • No, you'll need WindowsCast for that.

  • I have a projector at home with HDMI input. Would it work if I plug the CC into the projector?

    • Probably

    • +2

does the PJ have an audio speaker?

  • +1

Just received the confirmation email from officeworks…

Broden t***b ( 659Feedback score is 500 to 999) bought two lots of 50. Must be living in his own hotel

    • 3 lots now

Some Serious Privacy breach issues currently happening on Officeworks website right now! I have already contacted Office Works regarding this. I would avoid buying this online, and pick up in-store.

    • Care to elaborate?

    • Never mind that. They don't tell you when they're out of stock. You end up having to phone the 1300 number a week later to be given some estimate 2 weeks in the future. Got a refund yesterday on 8GB SD cards from a deal last week. Sick of stores that do this. I don't mind waiting if I know up front but if you lie to me once I'll assume it'll take weeks.

      • +1

My order came up with someone else's full name, their home address, and email address.

I only discovered this once I had finished the transaction on Officeworks website.

        • +1

Lol, my order called me Olga

        • +1

          @Fincky:

I bet Olga won't get your order for 4-6 weeks either.

        • @syousef: I can get a russian mail order bride named olga faster than that!

  • How good is this for watching Australian catch up TV?

    • +3

Very poor, last time I looked a few months ago, at least when casting from an Android phone:

All of which is a real pity. The hardware can all do it, but the TV networks are not even trying. Rather than a different app for each channel, what's needed is a central "freeview plus" app, with really good chromecast support. That would be useful, but last time I looked it did not exist. So, at the moment, no dice (due to the TV networks not the Chromecast) - sorry!

      • Cheers for the reply!

      • Any video played through chrome on your phone can be cast

      • +1

You just need to load the page, e.g. in your browser on your phone and a cast button appears. Have tried with Ten & 9 and it works well.

Anyway, Netflix & Hulu work well. I just got the WatchESPN app working (need someone with a US cable sub) and it works great for live sports.

        • -2

This is clunky. Why do people think DLNA is so cool? For local content it just sucks. Large libraries struggle. SMB and local media organised in directories still far superior.

    • Just stream the tab playing the catchuptv service if on pc.

    • Cast the catch up tv tab from phone or PC. Not as nice but does the job

  • awesome post, thanks op bought 3!

  • Thanks! Already have a media server with Kodi on it but hey… I'm sure I can find a use for this cheap gadget I don't even need hahaha.

Maybe NBA Game time when the Xbox app is playing up

  • Just got 2 at Officeworks North Ryde. About 20 still on the shelf

  • I love checking the ebay page, it shows how many have been sold in the past hour.. Looks like it's getting ozbargined.. 350 sold in the past hour when i last checked.

  • I don't know what this is and I'll probably never use it, but I feel like I should buy it because it has so many votes..

  • +2

Ugh selected paypal as a payment and then allocated to pick up and i kept getting this stupid message 'Postcode, suburb & state combination is invalid in shipping address.' It said fill in where the * is shown yet all fields where filled correctly and no * was shown. I then changed my payment to credit card and it then accepted my info, pretty shit javascript/php validation but amazing deal!! Bought 2 thanks OP.

  • +1

    Is this the cheapest ever?

    • +1

No, I paid $19 delivered from catchoftheday for mine with a code posted here, but it sold out in hours, and that was over 6 months ago. That's the lowest it's every been, and it has not got close to that price since. So $24.50 is pretty good, I wouldn't bother waiting if you want one at this price.

  • Tempting Price but still thinking do I really need to buy it ;)

    I have

    1. Samsung Smart TV with Screen Mirroring feature , Samsung Note 3 which Directly project to TV using screen Mirroring,
    2. Window 8.1 Laptop which project to TV using Screen mirroring(WI-DI).
    3. Netflix has direct feature to Project on TV.

What else not covered above I can do with Chrome-cast ..need 1 convincing point to buy :)

    • +2

I've set my samsung smart tv up to appear in the US, so I've got all the US streaming apps on it. I use chromecast to cast Australian netflix content to the tv. Can't cast Australian netflix content to the US app on the tv. To change regions it's a few minutes of stuffing around and re-tuning all the stations etc. Reason for using chromecast over screen mirroring is i can still use my phone while watching Australian content.

      • thanks

I have set my laptop to US Netflix :) which I can project to my TV

        Mobiles to Australian Netflix

      • How do i change netflix region in samsung tv?

        • You need to change the region of your TV and use a dns proxy. You can still get all your free to air stations but it means you don't have access to things like abc iview. But I find the combo of us Netflix and hulu through my tv remote values out over iview and other Australian TV catchup tv services/apps. Keep in mind that you can change it back to Australia if you don't want it anymore. It's just a pain as you lose all your settings. It's effectively a factory reset.

The method I used is below but it depends on your series of smart tv.

    • Spoke to HN chat and the guy said he could match but if he beat it his boss wouldnt be happy to say the least

None left at the Clarence st, Sydney store. Had a few phone calls and people asking about them when I was waiting to pick mine up.

Surprisingly, I ordered online and selected click n collect. Got a email about an hour later saying the order was ready to be picked up.
It seems they allocated some store stock to click n collect orders

  • Alexandria has been OzBargained

  • not sure whether i want to use this, but will buy lolz

  • TY OP!

  • Thanks Op. Bought one on the web click collect. Sorry I got no idea how it works.I got s Samsung smart tv, laptop, iPad,iPhone and Samsung galaxy and Adsl 2 fast internet. How does it all work? I need a walkthrough to maximise what I can do with this. All help , references will be appreciated.Thanking you all lovely people. Cheers

    • with all those devices you may as well put the chromecast in the cupboard ;-)

    • If you're sitting on your couch with your mobile phone or tablet and decide you'd like to send what you're currently viewing to your TV, you press a button to send what's on the screen to the TV.

So for example, if you're watching a YouTube video and would like to watch it on your TV, you can press a button and it will pop up on your screen.
