Google Chromecast $24.50 @ Officeworks

9020

Went into an office works store today to buy a google chromecast and it was $24.50

The Google Chromecast connects directly to the HDMI port on your TV and allows you to use a smartphone, tablet or computer to play your favourite entertainment onto your TV. Use your portable devices like a remote control and search, browse, play, pause or rewind your videos on your TV screen.
The Chromecast plugs into your TV via a HDMI port then uses your home WiFi network to connect to your other devices.
You can cast any website onto your TV using a Windows PC or Mac computer or mirror what's on your Android smartphone or tablet.
There are also a variety of Chromecast apps available to help you customise your experience.
You can also choose your favourite images to be a backdrop on your TV when you're not casting.
The Google Chromecast is compatible with Android smartphones, Android tablets, iPhones, iPads, Macs and Windows PCs.

Also available on the Officeworks eBay store

    • I have a computer connected to my TV all the time, so I don't see the point of using this…

Having said that, the price is very tempting.

  • Thanks op got 2!
now to see if they'll hold them for a month heheh.

  • +1

    Thanks OP.
    must resist…. don't need another chromey….

    • Hack, hack…

  • +1

i still prefer using the apple tv over my chrome cast… but at this price, i'll bite and buy another one :)

    • +2

At this price it's worth it for the Free movie (coupon/credit) they hand out occasionally.
I've had a chromecast for 6 months maybe and have recived 3 vouchers for movies I can choose as well as 5~ movies I don't need to see again but now "own to watch" Gravity, Big, Pacific rim, the faculty, Xmen 1, Fast and furious 1.

      • +1

true dat….. maybe buying another 2 then :)

  • Thanks, got one.

  • Anyone have issues plugging this into their amp?

I bought one a while back - works well for about thirty minutes and then white lines start appearing across the screen, getting progressively worse until the screen just goes black. A reboot of the chromecast fixes it till the next time.

I thought it was a faulty unit, so I swapped it over, only to have the same happen with the second unit.

I've tried with and without the extension connector. I'm assuming the weight of the dongle is making the connection loose somehow.

    • Have you tried duct tape? (or you know, cable ties?)

      • I've tried tape around the actual connector to make the fit tighter, but didn't help. Are you suggesting ties to support the weight of the chromecast?

        • +1

Yes. I haven't had this issue, but I thought it might assist you!

You could also try a HDMI switch.

        • I've tried tape around the actual connector to make the fit tighter

I wouldn't wrap tape around the connector as that's the ground shield.

    • +3

I'd assume some kind of faulty HDMI handshake is occurring. For some reason manufacturers seem to have a hard time nailing down to the HDMI specs with software. For instance my PS3 wouldn't work with my Dell hdmi monitor for no reason but my desktop would. Same ps3 works fine on other Hdmi screens just not this one.

      • +1

Actually this sounds most likely. As I said a reboot usually fixes things without a need to re-insert the plug.

        Very annoying.

        • It's disappointing Manufacturers can't stick to agreed software specs. sigh -.-

        • +1

          @Scaregdearimasu:

I'll see if there are any fw updates for the amp. Never thought to check before.

        • @takezo: good idea that could possibly fix it!

    • Sure it's not overheating?

      • There's plenty of space around it (it's in an open backed unit, so if it is, I'm not sure there'd be much I could do about it.

    • Do you run it with the provided ac adapter?

      • +1

        Tried both with and without.

  • Cheap!!

  • purchased 3. Free delivery. great price.

  • You could probably do a price beat at bing lee or good guys if you can be bothered

    • Or Harvey Norman.

  • Bought 2. Thanks OP.

  • +7

I told myself I would stop buying cheap tech I have no use for (eg Raspberry Pi, Eneloops, various SD cards) but I just can't help myself.

  • Oh crap. I litterly just bought this 2 weeks ago at $40 from office works.

    Those shift devils.

    • +13

Buy these and return them on your $40 receipt

      • Good plan. Too bad it's all expired now!

    • I paid $48 from Dick Smith 3 weeks ago.

  • This is filling the Live feed!

  • Thanks OP! Just ordered 2!

There's a reason why her eyes are closed

  • +2

I still don't get the appeal of this, what's the difference between this and putting your video files on a USB?

    • +2

This is more of a streaming device rather than a media player. You could stream youtube, plex, netflix, & other apps that supports Chromecast wirelessly from your phone, tablet or PC.

      • Ah OK, that makes more sense now. Thanks

  • +1

Past 2 stores to get to a stock with stock.
    Was 7 at Frankston, now 5 ;)

    THANK-YOU!!

  • +3

Cheapest ever seen, but no HDMI Port left on the TV…

    • I too know this problem. I even went out of my way to by a tv with 4 ports and I don't even have any current gen consoles yet.

    • +3

Maybe you need something like this.

      • Something LIKE this is a good idea, but this particular item is TERRIBLE. The remote doesn't work well, and the device itself seems to get interference from a PS4 controller, as it would randomly switch inputs while I was playing Bloodborne.

        • and if you read the description on that page -
          "Compatible with:
HD-DVD, SKY-STB, PC, DV, PS3, xBox 360/ Slim etc. (Please note, this splitter not fit PS4.)"

I have it, but don't need to use it, so I tested it a few times and it worked fine. As for the remote, I use a Harmony remote and it's just as easy to teach it the codes and use that.

    • Splitter.
Not too different to the powerboard arrangements we all use back there.

  • Thanks…great findings!!
Just got 2, one for each bed room! :)

  • Cheers..

This will be the 3rd one in my house.. At this price why not hey..

  • +2

Sorry for earlier post about "out of stock". For some reason it reports as no stock if I use the mobile site but order goes through on desktop site

  • Finally bought one, great find. Well done :)

  • Holy crap I thought the one I bought 2 weeks ago from eBay deal (31) was a steal…..

  • +5

Man I already have one and I only have one TV and I barely even use the chromecast much any more….

    but this is so cheap…

    be strong

    • +3

I bet you fold and buy another one :)

  • +2

I wonder if there is a Chromecast 2 due soon - that sounds like a significant unforced price cut. Or maybe they have screwed up the pricing again?

    • My thoughts exactly. There have been strong rumours about CC2 for over 9 months now :(

  • afraid tomorrow we got another deal of this at $20

A list of all chromecast enabled apps:

    https://www.google.com.au/chrome/devices/chromecast/apps.htm…

    Really good recommendations here:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/chromecast/wiki/apps

I have found Cast2TV (paid) to be quite good for streaming content (e.g. sport streams). I have heard good things about Pluto.TV as well for live streams.

Apps that are not available on the play store:

Most of these use videos hosted on a google drive account so it is quite fast and works really well. Popcorn time uses torrents.

As with all third party apps not from the play store, be careful and critical. I recommend intalling an adblocker on android if rooted along with greenify-ing the apps. If you have custom roms you can revoke certain permissions too.

Found a website with the above in a compilation: http://www.aazee.com/

    Will add more later.

ABC Iveiw is still in beta support for chromecast. It's been beta for at least 6 months now. Sigh I hope they fix it soon.

    • I like MovieHD and Showbox, how do you get them to work with Chromecast?

      • They should just have a cast icon when you play a movie

        • +1

They don't have a cast button. Do you have one?
Edit: found a solution on their site. Need Allcast or Localcast

        • @junoz86: You're right, I use it with localcast as well.

So can you mirror off your Ipad or Iphone onto the TV?

  • Do I still need one if I have an android TV box?

  • Melbourne 461 Bourke St store is out of stock.

I got the second to last one and another guy got the last one.

This is a real bargain… thanks to OP

  • Delivery costs to regional Victoria $25! How ridiculous is that?

  • My current chromecast is broken - picture keeps blacking in and out. Thanks OP. Ordered one

  • +3

Ordered one for click and collect but did not receive a confirmation from officeworks, only a paypal receipt. Will i get a text or email when ready to collect?

    • The same thing has happened to me - only a paypal receipt and no confirmation.

    • Same here, and check your Paypal receipt, is it missing the description? I'm worried…

    • +2

Got my order confirmation 7 minutes ago. Seems like it's just delayed.

    • Finally received confirmation email, took 20+ minutes.

    • It's possible that they don't have stock left. I had the option to click/collect, but decided not to. Checked the store in person and there was no stock left. Their online system isn't in sync with actual store stock it seems.

Even now it still says there's stock, when a few people have confirmed that those stores have none left. :(

No idea what they do to the order. Maybe hold it till more stock arrives?

      • I called up their aftersales department and was told even though the stores don't have stock and you selected for click and collect, the item will be sent from their warehouse and to that store within 1-2 days.

        • Excellent. That's good news for those ordering online. That's probably why it says "orders take up to 2 business days to process before you can collect them" or something like that.

    • Ordered 3 to be delivered using a credit card. Still no email confirmation.

      • I ordered via CC for click and collect and received order confirmations but they other than the subject line with the order number they contain no info regarding the order at all. oh wait they do contain order receipts as attached pdf files.

        • Just received my email confirmation, after like 1 hour?

        • @wjb: weird mine took minutes.

    • Same here. I'm still waiting for mine about fifteen minutes later. Must be they're a little swamped right now.

  • ordered 2 for C&C
    Thanks.

    • Thanks op. This will relieve the Xbox One of Netflix duties in the bedroom.

  • Thanks OP.

  • Purchased C&C. Great post!

Trying hard to resist buying another one, I have 2 already one for TV upstairs and downstairs, I use these way more to watch cast videos than I do watching FTA. My family uses it all the time watching Netflix, Youtube and NBA Game Time. The third would be for the work TV downstairs for the same purposes during lunch break. Damn you Ozbargain I don't really need it but I absolutely want it at this price.

    • get another one they're so convenient!

  • i have other two chinese miracast devices but they are all not good.
what i want is just to mirror EVERYTHING on my galaxy note screen to my LG tv (it is smart tv with hdmis).
the tv also has eternet port and connected to wifi router/modem. my phone will be connected to the same wifi network.

can i do this with CC?

    • What Os is your Galaxy note running?
Or if you go to google play see if you can download the chrome cast app.
if you can then you should be able to mirror your screen via the CC app.

      • running 4.4.2 but custom rom.
so if i want to show my video or photo on my note, i can play it then send it to my tv with this CC?
same thing with games for example?

i m thinking to upgrade to custom 5.0, will this be a problem?

        • +1

I'm on custom 4.4 kitkat CM so close to stock. after you install the Chromecast app and register your chromcast with it you should see a cast screen tab http://imgur.com/L4oMo9F like this one (not mine google stock image). It's beta at the moment but works fine for me. I would only use it to show off web sites and such video playback through it will probably be laggy. just tested screen cast with video and it looks ok. The aspect ratio on my tablet isn't the same as the tv so it doesn't fill the screen. Best bet is to stream videos directly instead of using screen cast for that purpose. You can use all cast to stream video files from your phone to the tv.

@Scaregdearimasu: thanks will try later, now buy first.

Anybody else have trouble paying with credit card at OW? Maybe a plugin issue. I had to go via paypal.

    • I always use PayPal at Officeworks anyways, so much easier and it cost OW more. :)

  • Thanks OP, I picked up 2 with free C&C.
Will be my first Chromecast, hope it comes in handy.

  • +3

    Finally !!
I have been holding to my $25 eVisa card from "Drop Into Maccas 2" game to get a chromecast, and now, I can get it !
    Thanks OP!

Buy from ebay if possible. More likely to receive your order. And don't forget to use your $50 voucher if you have one https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/197741

Got one on click and collect, says available in 2 days…
Could not justify buying 3 for same day delivery when I already have one (and love it esp with netflix for the kids) and only two TV's….

I think I'm OCO (Obsessive compulsive OzBargainer) - Maybe someone in a white coat can hold a book and have a section on Today Tonight about it…
"We conducted a very detailed survey (me making stuff up) and found there is a new social drug called OCO…. and so on…

Heh, found an OzBargainer at Bne OW :)
    Thanks OP
