Virgin - $40 Unlimited Calls&Txt with 4GB (1 Month Rollover)

910

Virgin has released a new online exclusive sim plan of $40 a month which gives 4 GB of data with unlimited national calls and texts (CnT) plus $300 worth of international calls.

With data and international calls rollover I think it is a great plan compared to other providers in similar price range. I will change my current $50 plan with Optus with 8 GB of data to this plan because I hardly use more than 3 GB in a month.

Fine print - https://www.virginmobile.com.au/Global/virgin-mobile/static/…

Any unused included value and included data will roll over to the following month only, and is used once the following month’s inclusions are exhausted

          Ouch.

Get out plenty thanks. Maybe cause I don't live with the hillbillys

          @bargained:
The fact that you said Virgin is worse than Optus shows you know nothing… Virgin IS Optus.

        • @clse945111:

Apparently Virgin Mobile retains its own customer service staff under its own management so the customer service can differ to Optus customer service.

        • -1

@clse945111: Then it's only worse than Telstra. Pick your favourite. I'd select Telstra.

        • +2

          @clse945111:
Virgin uses Optus cell towers but not all of them therefore wont have the same coverage as Optus.

        • @edmobile8:
I'm pretty sure they use ALL of them, as well as all the other ones like amaysim, jeenee. It's not like boost only getting telstra full 3G and aldi getting wholesale 3G. Optus don't do "part of Optus network" thingy like telstra do.
For virgin, as long as you are using Optus APN you'll get full Optus service, including full 3G and 4G and 4Gplus (700mhz).

        • @clse945111: personally when I had virgin it was not as good as optus. I had virgin for about a year and it was ok but when I moved to a different area I had to switch to optus because it got really bad. so I think there is some truth in it, my experience was that it was not exactly the same.

        • @kima:
When was your experience? What apn were you using? Were you using the same phone?
There's honestly so many factors that people forget…
I asked because before 4G was enabled for Virgin, 4G was only available to Optus users (and therefore virgin was only getting Optus 3G), this was only about 2-3 years ago.
Virgin APN was/is only for 3G and to use 4G you need Optus APN. Virgin themselves said that as well. The Virgin APN was meant to be "second priority" so was always slower than people using Optus APN on 3G. Also billed differently, as optus APN was more expensive (billed per MB instead of KB), but not the case anymore.

        • @clse945111: same phone, both 3G

    • +11

Doesn't Virgin use the Optus 4G network? I was with them for years and no problems except way out bush.

    • +4

      Optus works fine for me.
      Adelaide Metro and Hills.

    • +1

I don't see the point in all these downvotes!!! Anyone who says they have a bad reception with optus/virgin are getting negged in this thread! Why?
I have been with virgin for two years and it was mostly fine. However when I moved house and started uni their network was downright useless for me. I have no optus reception in my house or some places at my university. So his comment it valid. I've tried optus with no luck. Tried Vaya and the same story. So for me I have to stick with Vodafone or Telstra network.
Don't just neg people for stating their experience IMO.

    • +11

you mean Boost 3G network? do you still live in 2008?

        • I'd say the advantage of 4G over 3G is the lower ping which would be good for gaming but not every one needs that especially on a phone.

        • -1

@hollykryten: if you can wait and tolerate the slowness try GPRS. lol.

        • -1

@dlovep:Tell me ONE reason why i would need 4gb over the speed i get on H+ with boost mobile?

I can steam 1080p and music and if needed ping is plenty low enough for online gaming on my pc/ps4.

Id much prefer far better coverage then 4g which i don't need.

too many retards who downvote for absolutely no bloody reason other then for the fun of it.

seriously give me some reason why i would need 4g in my life.

        • -1

@hollykryten: ive been on both vodafone 4g optus 4g and both ping are not better then boost mobile.
Boost mobile gives me about 25 ping and 2-5mbps download speed and 1-3 mbps upload.

        • @holden93:

guess your area is one of those weird ones. My virgin 4g (optus 4g) is like 12mbps dl and that is quicker than my tpg adsl (8=10) at home. Weird right? Who needs 4g? I DO…

        • @holden93: Less congestion, I'm with telstra and when using 4g theres a noticeable difference in website loading speeds. Especially during peak hr where on 3g theres usually a 2sec lag before a website begins to load whereas on 4g it loads instantly. Also when streaming you can skip forward instantly without waiting for the video to reload again.

Optus is currently building 4g towers at an incredibly fast rate and has equal/better coverage compared to telstra 4g. Optus have 4g in pretty much all metropolitan areas and most big regional cities.

Unless you live in some really remote area that telstra happens to have coverage and optus does not. You'd be a fool to pick telstra 3g over optus 4g + 3g, especially if they were the same price.

        • @holden93: Speed is the reason, why use PC ? why upgrade ? should I assume you're using XT or 286 ? like I said "if you can wait and tolerate the slowness" that matter. Btw you're not using 9600kbps modem right ?

    +1 for

    CnT

    Like that

    • Excuse my ignorance but what is CnT?

      • +3

An explicit word, or a dodgy abbreviation for calls n texts

      • Call and text?
Roll over indefinitely or just to one following month?

        • Just the next month

    • Yea I was thinking… unlimited what..?

  • unless you're in metro all the time…to be honest Virgin's network is pretty bad..

  • Thanks OP. Have been waiting for Virgin to come on line with a good plan.

  • To all the people saying the Virgin network is pretty bad…

When you tried it was it on a phone that had 3G capability on the 900/2100MHz frequencies?

I thought Optus was not fantastic initially but found out I was using a 850/2100MHz phone (Telstra frequency).

Once putting the sim into a 900/2100 or a quad band 850/900/1800/2100 phone reception was fantastic.

    • +5

"Coverage" maps only indicate outdoor reception. I have found Telstra indoor coverage is far superior.

      • +4

I appreciate telstra because 9/10 toilets are in reception where I found around 6/10 for optus and a pitiful 2-3/10 for vodafail.. I can't comment on virgin as I haven't used them.

        • Virgin is owned by Optus. Can't even get signal inside local suburban shopping centre :(

        • That info is good shit.

        • Yep the main problem with optus was that they used mostly 2100mhz towers which don't penetrate walls aswell as telstras 850mhz network. This meant usually no reception in cinemas and car parks etc.

This has changed now as optus are building 4g 700mhz towers at an incredibly fast rate which penetrates walls really well, whereas telstra has been sitting on their arse with their 4g rollout

      • Sure, also the bill is far superior.

  • +1

Thanks OP.I changed from 50 unlimited plan to 40 unlimited. good find

    • I tried changing my old "fair go" plan, but it said there was a problem with my account and to call them - my guess is that because its an online exclusive deal, they may not allow me to take advantage of it if I go through the call centre. Anyone else come across this problem?

      • +1

Yeah I had the same issue also.

I contacted them via message on Twitter to get it changed . It's the best way to make contact with them and get things done. Happens straight away and you don't have to speak to their offshore calls centres

        • Thanks for the tip - I did the same and it worked a treat!

  • For a different option of network provider - vodaphone have this deal until 18 August:

    http://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Carriers/Vodafone/Personal/Vodafone-$50-SIM-Only-Red-Plan?phoneprice=Contract&contract=0

Pretty much the same thing without the rollover.

    • A little bit different, Vodafone offer unlimited txt to overseas as well, while Virgin plan doesn't and you will be charged $0.35 per txt

  • -1

International calling rates are outrageous! One minute call to India is 3$ per min(+ connection charges). 300$ additional value translates to less than 100 minutes of international calling.

    • Similar plan on Vodafone gives you 300 minutes for international calls. but only 3 gb data. Better value if you want international calling.

      • No Vodafone gives you 4GB (5GB if your a student)to for the same price $40 if you signup through the website on Month to Month for 24 months. Also get the Red Roaming overseas for $5 per day.

Though this offer rollsover unused data and value for a month. So they both have pros and cons. Optus Vs Vodafone Network, etc, etc,

  • shots fired..

  • -6

Included international rates are a joke. Calling Austria is $3.- per minute while ie amaysim charges about 20 cent.

What a scam making it look more than what it is

    • -2

When i was on Virgin Mobile PAYG i found $10 worth of credit would disappear after just a few minutes talk time. It was ridiculous. Now on Boost Mobile $40 Unlimited which is pretty good.

  • +4

I must say I have my fair share of reservations when I initially signed up with Virgin Mobile after the 3/Vodafone venture/debacle which left people with phone receptions which consistently dropping out ad nauseam. It has now been over 3 years ago to that day. I must say that my experience with them in terms of network reception, pricing, plans, and customer service has been nothing short of wonderful. Have only had minor issues which their customer service were prompt to provide assistance with, in a timely fashion. To this day I still get that annual phone call from them asking for feedback for improvements I feel they can make. Hallmark of an excellent company that recognises the importance of delivering a good product to their customer base.

  • still not good enough compared to my $20/m with 1.3gb data (and $200 credit for "C&T" ) for my needs. personally, i dont need unlimited c&t, i want more data:(

    • … With?

      • same company. virgin.

    • Wifey is on 2.2GB (recently bumped up to 3.2gb as a good gesture due to some billing issues on virgin's end), $350 talk & text for $20 per month for over 3 years now. Don't think she is ever going to change.

      • keep calling her wifey and she might …

      • +1

thats a GREAT plan! i wish i could have some billing issues with them:p

  • +6

What have all these guys been smoking when they said Virgin is worse that optus…

    Virgin/tpg with 4g/liveconnected with 4g all use optus network…!

The ranking has been Telstra > Optus > Vodafone forever now. If you have deeper pocket then Telstra is the way to go

  • Just upgraded! Thanks OP

  • +1

If you hardly use more than 3 GB in a month, then boost is better.

    • +1

Why is this getting downvoted? If you don't use more than 3 gig a month you might as well pay the same price and get access to the superior Telstra network with Boost.

    • boost $40 plan? why is it better? it uses telstra 3g network, but virgin uses optus 4g.

      • I personally would take Telstra 3g over Optus 4g, Optus 4g might be better for people who never leave the sight of concrete but even then Telstra 3g reception is better for indoors.

        • Remember you can make Boost Telstra 4G by getting a sim replacement instore at Telstra.

    • +1

Boost doesn't contain international calls and sms so it won't suit people who use some international calls.

    • I have to correct this that for some people virgin 4g is better.

  • The webpage here confused me http://www.virginmobile.com.au/monthly-mobile-plans/#sim-pla…

It says unlimited standard calls and text in bold at the top
But if you check the exclusive plan benefits, it says "Unlimited mobile calls & text Virgin to Virgin within Oz"

Does that mean the unlimited calls only applies if you are calling virgin?

    • +1

I think its just a standard copy paste between all their plans.

    • +1

All plans have unlimited calls/txt between virgin numbers.
But this plan is unlimited to all numbers/networks

    • Thanks :) signed up

  • Can you port your existing number? I can't see where it allows this.

  • Judging from my experience > virgin service is better than Vodafone. Virgin service in Melbourne cbd and metro remains strong on 4g, whereas Vodafone dies out onto 2g underground.

  • thanks OP, tempting to change from my $30 3gb+$200 calls, $10 more a month for another gig and unlimited calls is definitely gonna stop me from being a tightass calling people

  • Thanks.Just signed up.Moving over from spintel.I found Spintel to be great but I kept going over my data limit. The good thing about this virgin plan is that data is also charged per kb which will stretch your data further.

  • Are international texts included, or cost extra?
My $45/m Amaysim plan doesn't include international calls, and texts to NZ are 25c ea.

  • This plan is a good fit for me. I've been struggling to stay within the 2.5GB of my $27/mo Vaya plan and need some international credit.

  • +1

Great find and thanks for the update. Whoo hoo - Was on an old $59 big plan and now pay only $40 plus a bonus loyalty 1GB = 5GB. Thanks for the deal - awesome.

    • I said this in reply to an earlier comment before I saw this one, but I tried to do the same from an old Fair Go $59 plan, but it told me there was a problem processing the upgrade - you obviously didn't have that problem?
