Sony 55" UHD LED LCD 3D Android Smart TV $1548 Free Shipping @ Sony Australia

This post contains affiliate links. OzBargain might earn commissions when you click through and make purchases. Please see this page for more information.

Not quite as cheap as previous Harvey Norman deal or JB HiFi, but with Cashrewards of 7.5% at the moment this comes to around $1435 (if my math is close) more like $1442 after cashrewards rewards making it cheaper.
So it seems this is way cheaper with Cashrewards!
Thanks to NotWithoutaCoupon
Cashrewards tracking receipt email arrives, and it says:
Sale value: AUD 2899.00 (which is RRP)
Expected cashback: AUD 217.42
Assuming I get $217.42 cash back, this brings the deal down to $1330.58

Also includes free shipping from Sony.

  • Sony put their prices back. not sure how Gerry gonna react.

    • +2

Well he lobbied the government until they agreed to put GST on cheap Internet purchases even though it will cost them money and be difficult to administer. So I'm guessing lobby Sony to push their prices back up.

  • +2

    Is it HDMI 2.0?

  • +2

"…..this comes to around $1435 (if my math is close)"

I think it is more like $1442 after cash rewards. The 7.5% is calculated on the ex gst amount.

    • does anyone have a wiki on cash rewards

I have created an account, i see the sony offer.

When I click the link I get transfered to the sony site….

What happens if I purchase the TV? do i fill a form out on cash rewards and give them a reciept?

      • +2

It's called affiliate marketing, and in the case of CashRewards is automatically handled by cookies when you click on the Sony link withing CR.
7.5% of the value will be credited back to your CR account automatically (after some time).

For CR to work properly you must have a stock browser, no blockers or any other addons that might prevent cookies from working correctly.

Pretty much you just click through to Sony from CR site, buy the item and cross fingers.

ok so basic chrome, and disable addblocker and any other extensions?

        • just anything that might affect privacy settings

    • At least freight is 'free' so CR is still applied to that.

  • Sort of a dupe.

    • except the price for Sony Store mentioned in that post doesn't match the website price, so not really.

    • Sorry, I hadn't actually seen that in that post.
Edit: Just submitted dupe report to mods.

It's just a week, not sure why you think that's such a deal breaker.

      • +7

        A WEEK!

        • +5

What if your house burns down over that week huh? did you ever think of that? At least you'll be able to watch reruns of friends in the smoldering ruins on your 55" Sony TV comfortably next friday.

    • +2

Wow you must've been one of those kids that were silverspooned their whole life, huh?

      • no not really. dont have a tv. havent had a tv for few years. saved up to buy a tv and was pretty excited to get it all setup and get going this weekend.

        • +7

You're excited??? Wait until you see what you've missed! Highlights include RBT where you see breath testing and The Block where people pretend to buy hardware and then paint a bathroom. P.S. spoiler alert.

If you haven't had a TV for years I don't think another seven days will kill you

        • Hook up your laptop to the 55 inch TV, browse ozbargain. Trust me, looks awesome!

        • Dude if you haven't seen TV for years you can be like Andy Samberg before the Emmys and catch up in a bunker

Do we really have to downvote this guy into oblivion. He's just having a vent.

If someone says a thing is in stock, it does get annoying when they can't deliver or delay. For many larger TVs there is a delay arranging delivery anyway though so "horrible service" is a bit much. Still does this deserve 4 down votes?

  • Is it a good interface?
I keep hearing that the smart capability of this tv is laggggggggggggy as and menus's are several button presses to get things happening
Other than that anyone buy and setup theirs yet? We need an bargain review section.

    • I like Android on a phone for the most part (though not some of the changes in Lollipop and beyond). But I really don't want it as a TV OS. Something tells me everything will move in that direction though as there are some advantages. One I'd like to see is XBMC/Kodi working natively against Samba shares. I abolutely HATE DLNA - slow library interface adding garbage I don't want that make large libraries unusable.

    • +1

Honestly, depending on what smart capabilities you use, its normally just easier to use a $40 chromecast.
Granted, that requires use of a phone or computer but I find it easier to get things happening on my phone and cast it, vs using a remote / app to control the TV.

    • It is a very nice and clean interface-nothing like android on phones. Overall, it's quite fast but the animations sometimes can become choppy, mainly when navigating the home screen. Haven't done a software update though. Very nice secondary remote you get included also which has a laptop style trackpad.

  • sony site is down - ozbargained???????????

  • Is there any UHD content yet?
My internet is 5 Mbps so that's not gonna cut it for UHD netflix.
    What about UHD blueray?
Maybe I'll have to buy my own 4K camera in order to enjoy a 4K TV?

    • +1

You need a UHD source, so probably a computer. Any decent still DSLR from the last 8 years or so will take advantage of the display. You only need an 8 megapixel camera.

4K video on the other hand is a headache - huge storage sizes. If you've got enough bandwidth and allowance you can watch 4K Youtube.

I have a DSLR which would take advantage of the TV. But I'd have to wear my glasses for it to make a difference to me. (I don't need them to drive yet…). My wife and kids don't seem to care if it's SD, so no use for them. And I don't want to buy a computer since none of my existing ones have UHD output. I'll stick to my current 1080p for now but if I was in the market for a TV I'd be interested. (The Android interface and reports of lag might put me off though).

    • play video from a new mobile phone, they record 4K.

    • maybe just dont buy it

    • UHD gaming computer, UHD youtube videos and some incredibly overpriced UDH movies are pretty much(I believe you buy a HDD with like 10 movies and it costs like $500 or something ridiculous like that) the only options right now.

    Sigh

I still remember when my 55" Panasonic plasma cost $2000 or so 5 years ago…Damn things are getting so cheap!

  • sony website crashed again..haha

  • Damnnnn I am keen. Good thing is, by the time I save enough to justify buying a new TV, they should be even cheaper (in theory).

  • should i pull the trigger or wait for 65inch to come down in price for xmas..

    • +1

Or wait for 75 inch to come down till next xmas

    • +1

Just wait. Otherwise you'll be wanting to upgrade at Christmas

  • Not sure if this apples here but Sony also have a deal for a free Xperia M4 phone with Android TV's brought from them??? http://ausdroid.net/2015/11/06/buy-a-selected-sony-android-t…

    • Doesn't include the 55X8500C unfortunately.

    • This offer only applies to the 65" and 75" models of this series. [edit: beaten by donnot above!]

  • ahhhhh…..I missed that!!! Thanks for clearing up.

  • +1
  • The software update is a real yawn. Up to an hour wait before you can use the TV again. Don't think HN has the deal going with the gift card any more. I heard they only had limited stock. Try JB if you dont want to wait and are are't into CR

  • Whats the input lag on these for gaming?

    • Should be around 40 milliseconds.

  • For anyone wondering, the software update does support 4K at 60fps and 4:4:4 (just updated mine)

  • Best deal is via cashrewards which takes you to the Sony site. Cash rewards will appear in your account later but they will email you to let you know that it is pending straight after the transaction. All seems above board. Thanks to "thedriver" for posting this deal. P.S: I'd get in quick as stocks may finish. JBHI are out of stock.

  • +2

So I took up this deal with cashrewards today. Paid $1548 as expected. Cashrewards tracking receipt email arrives, and it says:
Sale value: AUD 2899.00 (which is RRP)
    Expected cashback: AUD 217.42

Assuming I get $217.42 cash back, this brings the deal down to $1330.58 :D

  • Been keeping my eye out on this TV for the past few deals and finally decided to just bite the bullet! Thanks OP. Anyone know if it has the right VESA mounting holes on the back, cant find anything online that specifically states if it does and what the measurements are. Also, I got an estimated delivery date of 14th Nov which is a Sat, will they actually deliver on a weekend or is it just a placeholder date?

  • What would the warranty on this TV be like? I know JB HI FI offers an extra year on purchases over $1000

    • Really (JB warranty?) Got a link?

Standard Sony TV warranty is 1 year On-site Service/Pick up within 25km of Sony Authorised Service Centre.
I would in actuality expect 3 years warranty would apply though for a TV like this.

      • There is no link available but JB is aware of the consumer law and they automatically offer an extra year warranty on products over $1000. You can confirm this by calling them. Hope this helps

  • Got the TV delivered today but no word on the cash back yet :/

    • Did you order from Sony?

      When Did you Order?

      What State?

Mine still says pending… hope they havent sold out

      • Yeah ordered on Sony on the 8th. NSW but my house is literally 10kms from the Sony warehouse

        • Thanks for that, I ordered on 7th & in WA, still says dispatch pending…

    • How's it going?

  • +1

FYI all, update it to the latest firmware - this is independent of the Android updates: http://www.sony.com.au/support/download/608943/product/kd-55…

  • Hey, is anyone still waiting on this TV?

Ive been checking the tracker everyday and it has been in the local warehouse of DHL for a week!

Does anyone know if their tracking system is live or a few hours delay?

    • For me it was in "Shipment consigned" until the day for delivery. On the day of delivery there was an "Out for delivery" entry followed by real time updates from then on.

  • Thanks mate, looks like another day I dont have it…

  • I've got a box damaged unit with big holes and even the foam inside is broken in half, seems to be damaged by a forklift or hit something sharp. The unit is malfunctioning and sony is refusing to replace it with a new one. They said they will only fix it when I send the TV but I've already sold my old TV and I won't have a TV for weeks then, but with this significant damage am I not eligible to get a replacement? Is it legal for manufacturers to send box damaged TV's to customers? I thought legally they had to be graded separately.

    • Is it legal for manufacturers to send box damaged TV's to customers?

It might have left their warehouse in good working order but been damaged in transit.

The issue you have is that you signed for it. That could mean that Sony can't recover any costs from the delivery company.

I don't think you have any choice but to send it back. However Sony should also replace it with a new one as it constitutes a major failure under Australian Consumer Law.

      • Thanks for the feedback

  • I think the thing would be to not sign for it if the box is damaged, little relief though…. They would be required to replace not fix I think this is Australia consumer laws..

    Example for Vic

    https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/shopping/refunds-and-returns…

    • I've asked the DHL driver and he said it was already damaged when they picked it up. I only noticed the foam has split when box was opened so only realised that is wasn't just a light damaged box after signing it. Anyway they just rang and said they will process the return so all good now.

      • Also, there is no requirement for you to pay for return shipping costs. The burden is on them to pay those costs of shipping.

        From FairTrading

        Returning the product
You are responsible for returning the product, unless the cost of doing so is significant. In this case, the business must organise and pay for the return or exchange.
You do not have to return products in the original packaging in order to get a refund.
