Need some help guys. Finalised a purchase through ebay around 2pm. I entered the discount code which was accepted and it showed the discounted price which i paid via paypal. Received the automated email from paypal showing the discounted amount but when i log into paypal directly, the amount charged is without the discount. Will the 15% be refunded to me separately?

    • +1

Check your bank account. Usually Paypal transactions show full amount, but charged amount is different. If you click on each Paypal transaction, it should list it's made up of two parts - voucher and bank credit.

    • +2

Go to the PayPal desktop website and click on the transaction. It'll show the break up of what came off your account (bank or credit card) and the 15% discount you scored.

      • Thanks guys, that makes more sense now!

  • I made two purchases during the promotional period and saved $150 in total. My partner missed out on a laptop deal (dell Inspiron) as it was already sold out. Overall great savings before the new year 👍🏻

  • +13

That eBay offer was bad form in every way. Advertise 15% site wide until end of 2015 use celebrate as a code then cancel it without warning.
Next time don't believe ANYTHING they promise.
Should be a law against this kind of false promise promotion.
I went to the trouble of promoting some of my listings that qualified by adding a paid subtitle to mention the discount.
While I was doing this they had already cancelled it leaving me looking like I am promising something I can't fulfill, and now I am stuck with all these paid subtitles which I added in good faith - DON'T BELIEVE eBay again!
It's just BAD BAD business practice
    Unconsciounable

    • Advertise 15% site wide

Not exactly site wide when I weren't able to use the 15% off on CDs and posters.

    • As a seller, you should be entitled to remedies, they have enticed you to do business with them under false advertising. Complain to ACCC, see other posts previous page with links

  • +2

I won an auction for which the maximum bid I placed was done taking into account the 15% discount.
I've paid the seller (not their fault) and too much hassle to buy elsewhere.
I will contact eBay and ask for a credit though.
    And ACCC.

  • +1

Damn had $700 worth of goods sitting in the cart and was going to checkout in the morning - I'll buy them elsewhere now

    • consider yourself lucky you didn't pull the trigger

      • I know what you mean but it was actually Reno stuff for the house - so "good" spending lol

  • +8

Wow, incredibly poor form by eBay to pull this offer early. All retailers have the right to pull the pin on a deal early, but eBay is not all retailers. They should have realised this would affect everyone who placed bids on items ending before December 31 who placed those bids thinking the deal would remain valid. Massive, massive balls-up.

  • +14

Complaint with ACCC lodged. Taking it to the man (by taking it up with the man!!)

    • +5

      No one snoozed.

People just took time to shop around which they are entitled to do.
Not everyone is an impulsive buyer or spends 24/7 looking at OzBargain.

eBay said the deal would expire at 23:59 on 31st not 12:00 on 30th.
So eBay pulled the pin without warning and caught everyone off guard.

    • +7

Snoozing is if you purchased after the 31st. Its still the 30th.

  • +3

To everyone who lodged a complaint to accc, can you please write back to tell us your results. I think people just like to quote accc without doing anything.

    • +2

Well the automated acknowledgement goes as follows:

      Web form ID: accc-complaint-(REDACTED)

Thank you for contacting the ACCC. We appreciate you taking the time to write to us.

If you simply reported misconduct to us, and do not need our advice, we may not respond to you.

If you need information or advice from us, or we need to refer you to another agency, we will usually write to you within 15 business days of your submission to us. Note: We are currently experiencing a backlog and our response time may exceed 15 days. We apologise for any delay.

So it's not going to be a swift response.

      • As long as we get a good response, people would be more confident in submitting a complaint. So many times I hear cries of ACCC but hear no stories about the wins!

  • +10

This is ridiculous, I've never seen an offer pulled early. I don't even know if the Ts & Cs to do so are even legal, false advertising and all that.

  • Had items in cart committed to buy, but waiting on combined discount from sellers and then Ebay pull this stunt. They have just demolished any good will.

It seems you also couldn't include items of different currencies, even if using the PayPal currency converter, or items committed to buy more than about 5 days previously, despite it being about the payment transaction.

Plus the Ebay system has glitches and prevents requesting a total from some sellers, complaining combined postage is disabled, when those sellers clearly state on their auction page they welcome combined postage.

I think it's time Ebay retired and let someone with more integrity take over.

  • +1

Don't forget to fill in a complaint form with eBay as well as ACCC, there is power in numbers if we all contact them with feedback then the large number of complaints may make them take notice. If only a few people do it they probably won't do anything.

  • +1

    Not cool.

  • +1

Held off checking out my cart yesterday to find the offer ended early!

Poor form eBay! At this time of year?! Has left a bad taste in my mouth…

This is the second time this has happened. Last time was the wedding offer revised to end 4 days earlier than first advertised. It's no coincidence believe me. They do it to lure in shoppers to increase traffic/browse their site then end the offer to reduce losses.

    Tsk Tsk…

Take note: Next time a good eBay offer pops up remember to buy on the first day its posted.

  • this is LOW! How could you change the terms & conditions to end it early?

eBay, you lost another customer (buyer & seller)!!

  • Well this sucks… Was after a couple of strobes just needed some time to research which ones to get. Thought I had plenty of time. Shit move eBay.

  • +1

Everyone posting here should repost on their Facebook page - more visibility to the general public.

    • +3

They are moderating the comments and are deleting posts talking about the 15% off.

    • +1

You're right! I just posted, and they've deleted it, almost immediately!

      • Got to love free speech hey eBay!?

    • +14

If you were a true Ozbargainer, you would be refreshing the Ozbargain website every 15 minutes and have had a couple of hours between the deal T&C changing, to the time when the promo code stopped working.

Yes, because everyone constantly checks the T&Cs to see whether or not there's any changes.

      • +1

        Well said mate:)

    • +1

If I had any more negs available today, I'd give you one!

      • +1

That's OK. I gave you one.

        • Cheers bro! Have a + for that!

  • LOL, I guess waiting to buy that new fridge until tomorrow didn't really work out.

    • +2

Guess you'll have to cool down and buy elsewhere?

    • I guess we were lucky (in a way). Our fridge died on the 28th of December (bummer, but it had a good life $450 for 7 years), tried to fix it on the 29th (diagnosed, not worth it, controller board), and used the coupon on the 30th to buy from TGG which had some stock.

      I guess try Appliances Online?

  • +1

Damn!! All my orders are placed but hasn't pay yet. It said till 31st of Dec…. Why it's end till 30th of Dec now.

So unfair… they just changed the T&C date, there is no point to have the T&C, they can just change anything. I guess I will have to cancel those orders.

    • +2

Exactly what eBay's lawyers think, too.
"18. eBay reserves the right to vary the terms and conditions of the offer at its reasonable discretion by publishing revised terms on ebay.com.au."

      • +3

You can write whatever you want in the T&Cs, doesn't mean its not against Australian consumer law. Or a terrible PR nightmare.

  • This was a low blow by eBay making the code expire at midday rather than midnight as per usual, came home from camping excited to do a shop only to find the thing had expired. I swear when I first read it the end said 31st. Hopefully they run another one this weekend/next week to celebrate the new year and we can cash in :D

Perhaps they have ended the 15% early to give an even bigger discount? It's the only explanation for screwing over everyone who placed bids that were ending on the 31st and had items in cart ready to buy. The amount of negative reaction surely couldn't be worth whatever they needed to pull it early for unless another discount was coming?

  • +2

Good thing might come to those who wait. Will those who curse ebay complain if it offers 20% off in the new year ?

    • +2

If they apologise and offer a 20% discount site-wide it would certainly ease some tension…

  • +15

As a seller on ebay, I was looking forward to hopefully selling a couple of extra items during this sale. Disappointed that they ended it like this. Very poor form. I was getting a bit sick of all the fees I pay go into promoting 20% off for Dick Smith, Big W, The Good Guys etc. Finally they do a special sale that might benefit me (as both a buyer and seller) and it gets pulled early. They make 9.9% of every sale from the smaller players plus whatever they collect as a paypal fee. For the privilege of paying $50 a month for a basic store, they reduce that to 6% for some categories only when over $200, otherwise 8% or 9.5%. Again plus paypal fees. I'm sure the big players are getting better than the 4% you get with an Anchor level store. Yet, they continue to provide nothing in return to their core paying customers.

So, for every person they let use the 15% off coupon, at least 9.9% in most cases is directly funded by the final value fees paid by the seller. Since you have to use Paypal, another couple of percent covered there (yes they are separate companies now, if only to use the excuse that they don't have access to that revenue - don't forget Paypal is a participant in this promo). So the massive demand they totally weren't expecting somehow, is hardly costing them a lot of money. If anything, it's funded by previous sales by users who are the ones supporting the continued existence of the business.

Also, if you make any comment on their Facebook page mentioning ACCC, Dick Smith, etc it's automatically deleted straight away. Would neg this deal to show my disappointment but I already voted +.

    • +1

For what it's worth, I also contacted the sellers of the items I was going to purchase and asked them to express their frustration with eBay. After all they were hundreds of dollars out of pocket for sales I was willing to close.

Once again, eBay have technically done nothing wrong but boy have they f**ked it up marketing / timing wise!!!!

      • Good on you for letting them know. I have no idea if anyone was going to buy something from me. A few items have more "people watching". If someone messaged me and said they were going to buy something, but couldn't, I'd probably try and give them the discount and organise the sale outside of ebay.

I only just got my money back for something I bought. The sellers account had been hacked and a bunch of IT equipment listed. I never checked past or currently listed items (found what I wanted through search). Once i realised it wasn't coming, I messaged them to alert them of the situation. Response was to just wait until the Item not Received case expired, and I'd get a refund. There was over $100k of sales over 2 weeks on that account. I also found another seller with 4000 IT related items for sale, zero feedback, and a name of another IT seller with an extra letter added for confusion. Reported that and "its been sent to their investigations team". Week later and all of the items are still up. They just don't care as long as they are raking the money in unfortunately.

    • 12.6% (eBay and PayPal fees)

    • +1

The eBay Seller fees are insane. I sold a bike on there and they wanted to charge me $90 which is crazy since it wasn't any more work for them to sell than a 99c item. And what does $90 get me? a listing that at the bottom gives the potential buyer 'other options' and 'similar items'. Shit, if I'm paying $90 for a digital service I don't want ads on mine that steers buyers away.

  • Plot twist, New code at 10am HAPPYNEWYEAR 20% off… This is a joke by the way, you can try the code but it's going to be a SADNEWYEAR.

  • Tweet at them people! https://twitter.com/eBayAU inundate them with disappointment about the deal being pulled (it's still showing on their twitter feed too!)

  • +1

i was go to the banks to deposit to make a payment tonight and found the deal expired. wth with you, ebay? my item is $1770 for an a7m2 camera :( .

  • +1

    What a load of sh*t.

I was researching what to buy, and now they cancel it early.

I was looking forward to saving a good amount of $$$'s on my purchases - now this.

Absolutely dishonest and unethical business practices.

    Lack of integrity.

Never again will I put any faith into anything eBay says.

    I don't care what their T&C's state.

They've lost my goodwill for good.

  • +7

I have extremely low expectations for Ebay, but they still managed to fail to meet them.

    Very poor form.

  • they finished the promo early as its part of their marketing budget.
eg if they have 500k to spend on this promotion, they must of met that early (probably used average stats to work out how many days they will have to burn through it) however it burnt quickly, so they pulled the pin early.

    • Any links on that?
I'm not against marketing budgets', but I am if they don't state anything about it in their beloved t&c, so people can expect that possibility.

But according to Twitter it is about stock issues.

    • +3

So why not say, "hurry, applies to the first xx transactions" creating a frenzy to get in quick, instead of putting a date it is unlikely that will be met then "revising" terms and conditions to cut people off.

    • @porsche26c
"they finished the promo early as its part of their marketing budget."

How do you know this, what is your source (if any)?

Their own people have been advising that it was done through "concern for the stocks of suppliers". Obvious crap, but that is what they've said. Where does your version come from?

    • The error message that is now associated with the code, kinda supports your theory, but it sounds like you are guessing about what happened…

There is no balance left on this redemption code

      • Sorry guys I should of said this is purely a guess on why they finished it early. It would not be because of supplier stock. That's sounds like crap. It's because they are paying that 15%.

  • I held off purchasing as I was buying for a non tech, aged person. As I wanted to go through, what they were getting, as well as price; to which they agreed to.
Just now… I need to tell them how great ebay is, along with the higher price.
    Love it.

  • It's not over yet guys, called them and complaint and they'll manual override it. Got the following email last night about 8 pm after spent 30 mins on the phone with customer service. Good luck!

Not available to everyone, requires a lot of effort, need to wait a few weeks for the discount and if everyone does it, they will stop doing manual overrides.

This is also a "One Time Courtesy"

    • +1

Good luck with receiving the credit. From my experience, they never gave the credit, even after you remind them after 20 days. Email not responded.

    • Good luck tc88! I had something similar with the recent 10% sitewide (had already had a successful bid in the appropriate window but forgot about daylight savings time so paid 5 minutes too late). I got an almost identical email back from them (including "One Time Courtesy"), but am still waiting for the said credit. I think if I query them about where the credit is they'll say something about "holiday period delays", so I think I'll have to wait another month really.

If anyone has items they committed to buy within the window but then the deal had expired by the time they paid, eBay seem fairly willing to give the credit, so it's worth a try! I just can't comment on whether you'll actually /get/ the credit as I'm still waiting for mine!

  • +3

This is poor form of business from eBay

  • +6

Ebay is guilty of misleading and deceptive conduct on a mass scale with this promotion.

They should be heavily fined and forced to sign undertakings never to concoct such a scam again.

They try this on in the Australian market because our regulators will only tickle them with a wet leaf.

They wouldn't dare try this scam in the USA where they would get legally creamed.

The fact that they are now offering private cosy special deals honouring their advertised promise while shafting everyone else only ads to the extreme level of deception.

    Shame EBay Shame

  • +12

Alright… so many hatred here now but next time eBay has another 15-20% off everyone will forget and ozb will become peaceful and happy again…

    • +27

Not me - I'm boycotting eBay for the rest of the year.

      • +2

I see what you did there. :)

    • The hatred after Harvey Norman's tablet incident lasted quite some time though! Maybe this one will take some time to be forgiven too.

    • but no one will trust the advertised expiration time and date… i foresee negs at the start from people who got burned this time round

    • -1

Like I said, I'll be making ebay and paypal accounts for my relatives so that next time there's another 15-20% off I'll be 'selling' stuff to them just to make sure ebay loses money.

    • oh man, that sucks. I have it the other way around, I have a camera without a lens. The lens costs twice as much as the body..

  • Just talked with eBay live-chat as well but to no avail. They're really not budging on this one.

  • +2

What a pain in the arse, plenty of emails saying that it was the 31/12 but zero notification that they have changed the date to earlier :S

  • Damnit! They said they wouldn't grant a credit because my ebay and paypal email address are different, what bullshit.

    • You can change the email address to match. And call them again. But I have to warn everyone expecting credit in the next 20 days, depending how much it is, they gonna ignore your reminder. If it is small amount, you then gave up as a waste of time chasing small amount.

      • When I try and change my email address to my paypal email address it says I can't because it's the same as my username

        • +1

Yeah you have to change your username first.
