Vaya is now under new management by Amaysim

To avoid any excessive charges for those who are worried and want to take up the deal, you can:

  • Use your Coles reloadable MasterCard if you're worried about being overcharged as you can put it on hold within your online login
  • As suggested by others, port out 1 week before the end of the period you have purchased so you don't get charged full price

    No, please not Vaya…

    • +11

      I also had the Vaya "experience"

      • +7

        Not me, thankfully, but people very close to me have had to deal with immense problems with these mob and in turn I've had to deal with Vaya on their behalf many times unfortunately.

        • +9

          Yes (shudder) I remember all the emails over so many weeks just to get my meager deposit back. I think they wear you down with time and frustration. They do understand the word "ombudsman" though. It is the magic word that changes everything.

        • +3

          @King Tightarse:

          I doubt you will find any prepaid mobile plan for $5.80 per month

          Maybe it would be worth a neg at full price , but at this discounted price it's worth a go.

        • +13

          @easternculture:
          @easternculture:
          This is a postpaid deal, not prepaid.
          I know it sort of looks like prepaid the way they advertise it but you need to go through a credit check and you are open to any and all overcharges. You could get "got" with massive data charges before they inform you that you over (there is a delay). You could cop huge bills if you use all your calls 99c per minute after allowance (delay informing you)
          There are many ways this deal can come and bite you on the bum and turn in to a real nightmare. Don't even think of giving this to a teenager (data is charged in 1GB blocks after allowance)

        • -4

          @King Tightarse:

          Incorrect . There is no credit check. Last time I signed up for the free month no credit check was done . They only asked for my credit card details

        • +6

          @easternculture:
          It was my experience when I signed up, perhaps its changed but what has not is the fact that is is PostPaid with many potential hidden pitfalls.
          You are effectively running a tab for the month.

        • -7

          @King Tightarse:

          As I said before , you are commenting based on old management . Please only comment if you have accurate information and stop misleading people

        • +7

          @easternculture:
          My comments are helping people as many may not realise that this is not a prepaid deal.
          It is POSTPAID and has more than it's share of problems. It could cost people a fortune in overcharges as the calls and data keep flowing after the allowances are reached and are paid for as extras every month.

        • +4

          @easternculture: I have had recent dealings with their new management and they are just as bad in my opinion.

        • +2

          @iscooljoey2:

          I have put a list of suggestions to avoid any excessive charges for those who are worried and want to take up the deal which are:

          • Use your Coles reloadable MasterCard If your worried to be overcharged as you can put it on hold within your online login
          • As suggested by others, port out 1 week before the end of 3 months so you don't get charged full price
        • +2

          @King Tightarse:

          Controversial I know but I had no issues with vaya in 3 years of service and the return of my deposit took one 3 minute phone call

        • +2

          @King Tightarse:
          the TIO is a better ombudsman than the FOS [the financial ombudsman service] which was a nightmare to work with and I lost all my cases even when I 'won ' them. and the most difficult one I won for someone else on something which they rejected in my other appeals [false advertising and undue pressure] because they knew it would have exposed a can of worms for timeshare if they upheld the qualified [discalimed opinion] accounts of the largest provider in oz CHC…
          I gave up seeking rights there.

          the TIO is proactive.
          their new ombudsman is from FOS I think!
          but the TIO culture may still protect consumers!

        • +1

          @kylebb: have two phones and a few other family members with them and no issue's or over charges

        • +1

          @easternculture: It may sound like it is worth a go till you run into problems then that cheap deal gets damn expensive. I got overcharged $900 one month for data. It took 3 months of phone calls, arguments and followups to get it refunded. I know it is new management, but until it is proven it isn't just lipstick on a pig this is a deal to avoid. I believe it is also postpaid not prepaid.

        • @King Tightarse: agreed. I had my whole family on live connected's legacy plan (effectively vaaya's now) , I got charged excess 3 times. Last time was $600 excess cause my mum's phone went updating apps with data on. Since they don't offer telephone support I had to plea financial difficulties via Facebook pm. They cut me 50% discount for being a long term customer but the 300$ still stung. Their data barring system takes at least a day to kick in, if it kicks in at all. Not recommended for elderly or anyone who doesn't know how to monitor their data

        • +1

          @easternculture: you sound like you are working for Vaya.

        • +1

          @newozbargainermelb:

          you think i would tell people to use a coles reloadable mastercard and disable it after they sign up to vaya if i was working for them.

        • Or set the data limit on your phone.

        • +1

          @easternculture: I understand your good intention of posting a good deal here and trying to help people save money but I don't understand why you are defending everyone here when they say they've had bad experience with the management be it old or new.

          End of the day, it is them losing customers for not providing good customer service. I personally would prefer staying away with such companies regardless of how good the deal is.

          I appreciate your efforts on posting this deal. As always, I will look out for deals from you.

        • +1

          @King Tightarse: not always, they didnt act until I actually lodged a complaint with ombudsman. the pain and frustration they make you go through on leaving vaya, not worth even if its free, imo

    • same can be said, please no TPG, and they are under old management … lol

  • +2

    Been with Vaya for a while, but the 4G is a farce. I'm still stuck on 3G.

    • +1

      why is that? my phone switches to 4G and 4G+ anywhere optus has reception for it, just a curious if i need to watch out for something.

  • +5

    • Service will auto-renew on a monthly basis after your voucher period at $18 per month (Power Plan S), $20 per month (Unlimited S), $36 per month (Unlimited XL). If you do not wish to continue your service it must be cancelled through Vaya customer care

    How difficult do they make the cancellation process ?

    • +46

      From Vaya Standard Form of Agreement:

      You are required to irrevocably surrender your first born male child to Vaya prior to the cancellation of your mobile service.

      • +11

        and you STILL won't get your deposit back without a fight.

      • +10

        This is a huge issue for those without children.

        • +1

          Don't delay! Find a partner and get things going before this deal expires.

      • How about porting out to another carrier after 3 months(as most OBs do)?

    • +5

      Why do you need to call them to cancel. Just port your number to another company unless they charge a port out fee

      • This.

        However, you may need to email them to refund you any credit (if you are owed any).

        Source: ported 4 services out of Vaya over the last 2 years

    • +2

      You'd want to PORT, not cancel!

  • +1

    Im sure some will find a use for this. Not me. No included international minutes unlike amaysim deals…

  • +1

    Im cheap so i use vaya. Been with vaya for 3 years now (moved from TPG).

  • +19

    Vaya is fine, quite cheap and works well 99% of the time, until you have some kind of problem requiring customer service.
    Then it is a… f r e a k i n g n i g h t m a r e
    Would never,ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, use them again after my experience with them taking over Live Connected (ever)

    • +7

      I've one of the Vaya customers who hasn't had any major problems and wouldn't really hesitate recommending them to anyone. I find them fine. I was with them for about 2 years

    • +3

      Had to threaten the Ombudsmean to get my deposit back. Was painful, time consuming and apparently all to common with them.
      Don't go there. They are a nightmare.

      • +2

        They probably overcharged you as well (your last month should be a pro-rata refund). You can check by adding up the months you were connected against what they charged you overall. I had to go to the TIO to get them to refund the overcharge & get my security deposit back.

    • +4

      That was my experience to. It's amazing they get so much stuff wrong. By the law of averages, even as incompetent as they are, they must accidentally do something right from time to time.

    • 4 minor issues i contacted Vaya about and no issues and fast response each time

      you must be cursed.

  • dam just bought it without the 20% off! any way to still apply it after purchase?

  • So I'm currently with Amaysim.
    Should I buy a $2 Vodafone sim to speed up the porting process? (Amaysim -> Vodafone -> Vaya) 48 hours is not too long…

    • +2

      Telstra would be a better option

    • Maybe chat online to Amaysim and request confirmation your personal details are reflected in their porting database. The former porting officer was really kind and nice. She no longer has the position, and is working in Amaysim legal; but she still ported my number for me. I have never met a more cooler and awesome person in the telecommunications industry. But essentially a prudent call to ensure your personal details are updated is what's needed.

  • Too bad, have to activate by 31st May, otherwise I wouldn't mind trying it out. Just still have the Vodafone voucher from last year Groupon needs to be used.

    • It says redeem the Groupon voucher by 31 May, not activating the SIM.

    • I think the date is only for sign up. Maybe once you got the sim card, you can activate later?

  • Do note Vaya doesn't offer global roaming.

  • Can you activate the sim card three months later?

  • +1

    just bought, hope i can port my old number across 1 month later (don't need new number). My current plan ends in 1 half months.

    • I am hoping to do the same thing. I am exactly in the same situation.

      And thanks to the guy that posted this deal, as Vaya was my next option after my current sim plan expires.

  • The subscription starts from claiming/ redeeming the SIM card or activation?

    if it is from the time of redeem, I will have to redeem it 3 weeks later. Anyone could shed some lights? Else I could redeem it as soon as possible and activate end of next month

  • +6

    Neg for "major problem with the company" - hopefully to save their frustration of others.
    I had to threaten the Ombudsman to get my deposit back - this company is a nightmare to deal with.

    • +2

      Completely agree. If nothing ever goes wrong then it is alright, but having to get money/deposit back from them is such a pain. It was fine for me, but my parents and siblings had a terrible time to get anything out of them. Ported everyone over to ALDImobile and haven't looked back. Can't really go wrong with prepaid, especially with them now being on 4g and plans comparable to vaya (not this deal monetary wise unfortunately)

    • -1

      Your referring to vaya before Amaysim bought it off . It is now under a new management team .

      As soon as Amaysim took over, they abolished the $20 deposit .

      • +2

        Yes and they pretend to every old customer that paid it that they have never heard of it, despite hearing the same story over and over again. It shows that they are basically dodgy.

      • "As soon as Amaysim took over, they abolished the $20 deposit."

        Ok, so are they returning, or at least crediting, the $20 to all current customers who joined BEFORE AmaySIM took over?

      • So, EC do you mean no more deposit is needed for this deal?

    • +1

      Can you advise what we need to do to get the $20 deposit? We have 2 active connections ( one with Vaya and other with live connected). Do we need to give them some notice that we are leaving?

      • +1

        Wait until AFTER you have ported out otherwise they will cancel your account and you will lose your number and also get charged a disconnection fee.

  • Can you tether from your phone with vaya? (personal hotspot)

    • +1

      I am grand-fathered from an old live connected post-paid plan to vaya, and yes can tether (iPhone 4s).

  • Would they still charge for a deposit on sign up if you buy the 2/3 months option?? Doesn't say it will anywhere on the deal..

    • A deposit is no longer required . Cheers

      • Awesome. Thanks!

        • -2

          And ignore the comments as this relates to the older vaya management . Vaya is now managed by Amaysim as they are the ones who stopped the $20 deposit

        • @AnQie: is it for the referred too? can't see that on the website. thanks

        • @dealsniper: hmm.. I read it incorrectly.. false alarm.. srry. :(

  • +2

    Neg for "major problem" with company;

    Aside from suddenly charging everyone $20 for using their service:
    1. Multiple wrong bills (overcharge)
    2. Took 3 months to refund roaming deposit, spent more than an hour on the phone at the end
    3. Ported service out, still trying to get my $20 deposit back.. Has been 2.5 months

    Edit: Understand that they're under new management by Amaysim. Your mileage might vary.

    • Will we get charged $20 on top of this deal?

      • +3

        As OP mentioned, $20 is no longer required after amaysim took over. but back in the day, it was suddenly sprung on all users.

      • +3

        EDIT what he said.
        Also beware that this is a POSTPAID deal. It might look cheap but you are running a tab and could rack up charges the whole month.
        Be informed if you are considering this. Read the CIS. I would not even think about giving this to a teenager. It is not like a prepaid deal that will just stop when the data and calls run out. It will keep serving you and you could cop the worst phone bill you ever saw.

    • -1

      As I said before

      • there is no $20 deposit
      • your paying a discounted price
      • your bound to the voucher value you buy from groupon
      • use your Coles reloadable MasterCard If your worried to be overcharged as you can put it on hold
      • as other suggested you can port out 1 week before the end of 3 months so you don't get charged full price
      • it's only $6 per month , not sure why you all are complaining . Maybe you rather pay $20 a month
      • +2

        Noted and conceded to your points regarding the $20 deposit. My points regarding the company before change in management stands and I still haven't got my $20 back after porting out 2.5 months ago.

        I do, however, agree that there's a fair value in this deal at $6 a month.

      • May I ask, where is the $6 ($5.80) per month option? Lowest I can see is $10.

        • choose the 3 months option. Its $20 minus 20% with coupon = $5.80 per month

        • @easternculture:

          I see thank you. I thought cheapest I need to fork out can be $5.80, guess not.

      • +3

        Regarding using the Coles MasterCard, are you sure you have no accountability just because they cannot charge you with your credit card? I would imagine since that it is postpaid, you still owe them whatever that has been accumulated.

        Let's say you make tons of international calls, at the end of the month you rake up $100 in bill, you still need to pay it even if charging your cc failed.

        • +1

          Im assuming that your being mindful about using your included quota.

          If your going overboard, then thats another issue

        • +3

          @easternculture: you're, your and you're.

      • +1

        I appreciate the OP, I would be interested in the XL subscription, which is $16/month, less any other discounts I haven't considered.

        On Vaya website there is mention on additional charges that if you port out early, the early termination pro rata fee is charged. Also Bpay, pay at Auspost, plan change, dishonour fee; all attract charges. However, the debate on whether this Groupon is prepaid vs postpaid, is unclear by Vaya rather than the OP. Critical info summary states porting out is uncharged, but early porting attracting a fee is uncertain.

        I believe everyone has a duty to help the OPer with information to update the OP with both pro and con arguments. Saves new readers time reading through all the comments. If we are really concerned for each other, all these discrepancies should be collated and reasoned into a TIO complaint, in addition to discouraging further support of Vaya. The TIO may be a painful experience, so discontinued support for Vaya is one of the better preventive solutions.

        Vaya employees maybe an alternative to get them to change their work own processes, if they really do care and focus on customer service and subscription service delivery; and still want customers for their jobs. If Vaya are under new management, a change in work processes and policies should be reflected. But if very little has changed in either work processes or employee mindset, then another alternative to discontinued support for Vaya is welcomed.

  • +2

    People are still having issues, even under new management.

    Check out the Whirlpool forums.

    • +2

      For all those who negged me, check out

      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2393287&…

      Raven 1300: "So I've recently left Vaya for another provider, about mid-way through the billing cycle. Vaya have charged me about half a month's fee, which is fine. But what about that $20 security deposit they charged us all a while back?"

      Loutheo: "I thought leaving halfway through a month meant you should receive half a month reimbursement since payments are made in advance.
      I've also read that security deposits aren't refunded until requested."

      All this is true and has been going on for the last 2 years and is still going on now.

  • Hmm too many negs.. Think I'll pass. Was keen on the xl deal. Thanks for your comments.

  • +3

    I was on vaya for 2 years. i used to speak highly of them. until mid way through the second year. random charges to my monthly bills (they usually only do a couple of bucks since most people wont care) but after it started becoming a monthly thing i decided to ring up and wait. waited 1.5 hrs, the guy transferred me to the guy responsible. another half hour. the guy said 'its a bug in our system, we are sorry'. this continued to happen for 3 months then i quit.

    • -8

      Your comment relates to the older management .

      This in no way relates to the deal posted

  • +7

    vaya sent me email saying I owe them money, when I'm on bloody direct debit. GG

    That was last week, so new management = old management

    • +3

      Exactly the same for me last week/early this week. Direct debit, had money in account. Vaya account shows they debited and then reversed for some reason. Nothing showing on bank account.

      Get overdue email, check account, email back asking WTF is going on.

      No response at all, get another email on Sunday telling me to hurry up and pay or they will cut me off. Email back again.

      Finally got a 'human' response today saying sorry, account balance is $0, don't worry. No word on what the issue was/is.

      • I was freaking out since I got hit with a $10 fine before, coz my credit card expired. Can't they do direct debit properly to a bank account like a normal company?

  • Would of been good if it wasn't just a first month cheap price deal

    • Its up to 3 months :)

      Choose the period you would like to purchase from the drop down menu

  • Was about to sign with lycamobile cause credit was expiring then saw this, also a bonus $5 credit for signing up with Facebook so discounted on the 4th month too,

    Thanks.

    Customer service has never been an issue cause I never need to call them up other than asking for an account number for porting.
    Overcharges are generally user error like accidentally turning off wifi…
