I've been watching this too and am semi tempted! Was originally thinking of buying it as an entry level gaming laptop - which online reviews have said this is exactly what it'll do - entry level gaming. It'll run Fallout4 and the latest COD series but at a lower res (720p) and medium (at best) details. Can't bring myself to buy it though as most of my gaming is on a PS4 so no need to get a new PC. Still… damn tempted for a new not-too-bad spec'd machine.

      get a desktop

    • As mentioned by others, go for a desktop. Even a ~$500 ($650ish non-ozbargainer) desktop will out perform this gaming wise.

      • Please list the parts for a $500 that can out perform this with similar specs + a monitor and keyboard setup. thanks

The fair grade listed on that site for about $640ish will outperform this laptop. No keyboard and monitor, but can plug into a TV via HDMI. Cheap keyboard for $10-$15, same with mouse. Laptop doesn't come with a mouse anyway, and the keyboard you can take to your next PC. Can buy a cheaper case and PSU too (unbranded) without taking a performance hit. Weaker CPU but for gaming, the video card is usually the bottleneck.

$500 is probably slight hyperbole, but not by much, might be able to get there with a bit of bargain hunting. Plus, you can carry over parts to the next computer (case, PSU, keyboard/mouse) or if you have any of those lying around from previous builds you can save there too.

        • +1

          Challenge accepted.
Now note I was talking in the way of gaming performance - the CPU in this laptop is beast, though won't benefit much gaming-wise due to the low-end graphics. Secondly note $500 was more for the computer alone… Here you go:

          Cheap case+PSU combo: ~$70
          Cheap SSD: $85
          Cheap MB (LGA 1150): $70
          Intel G3258: $95
          GPU: R7 360 $139
Monitor: generic cheap ozbargained monitor: $139
          Logitech wireless mouse: $9
          Cheap keyboard: $5

          Total (PC): $459.
          Total (ALL): $612.

I personally would go for a higher-end graphics card, though even the card listed is double the performance of a 960M.
The CPU is slower than in the laptop, though it's all you need for gaming when your graphics card is only mid-tier. This CPU should easily keep up with a GTX 960 even.

Edit: If you wanna beast all over this laptop with a desktop, wait for a deal like this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/213099 and add a graphics card in for around $145 extra (GTX 750 with ebay 15% off), totaling just under $700. Add in a screen and everything and you've got a setup which will beast over this laptop for ~$850.

        • +1

@dyl: WELL DONE! The CPU in the laptop is pretty good. So It would of been pretty hard to match it!
I found it hard to build a decent gaming desktop for 600.

      • +2

Indeed list this mythical pc for $500 complete that outperforms this.

        • +1

Note 'gaming-wise'. The CPU in this laptop is heavily bottlenecked by the GPU in the sense of gaming. With that in mind, the PC would have a slower CPU but faster GPU for a better balance.

          Cheap case+PSU combo: ~$70
          Cheap SSD: $85
          Cheap MB (LGA 1150): $70
          Intel G3258: $95
          GPU: R7 360 $139
Monitor: generic cheap ozbargained monitor: $139
          Logitech wireless mouse: $9
          Cheap keyboard: $5

          Total (PC): $459.
          Total (ALL): $612.

According to benchmarks the CPU is around 20-30% behind the one in the laptop, though GPU almost doubles the laptops performance.

  • +3

Just a note- this machine doesn't support PCIe m.2 drives (such as the Samsung 950 Pro).

    • Would be nice, ideally. But when you're looking for a bargain you can't always get everything you want.
A SATA SSD or hybrid is almost as good.

  • I'm a bit scared of these Hybrid Hard Drives.

    • +14

      Me too, please hold me

      • +6

        HOLD ME SENPAI

        • …b-but first…please notice me…

  • I pulled the trigger on this one earlier. Tried to post this yesterday but there were only 4 left.Good deal!

  • Hello does this have slot to add ssd

    • +1

Yes, it has an M.2 slot that supports SATA 3 based drives (Such as the 850 Evo M.2), but not PCIe based ones like the 950 Pro.

      • Is there a performance difference

        • Between the PCIe and SATA drives? In everyday usage, you won't notice much, maybe a second off the boot time. In benchmarks, the 950 will obviously crush the 850.

        • @donnot: yes I meant regarding boot times
Oh well might give it a miss
Better of building pc for $1200

  • +6

I have no idea why the keep putting 5400 speed hard drives in 1000+ laptops, its like having a lambo and putting mover engine in it

    • Yeah definitely ruins this for me, makes me feel better about buying the Lenovo posted the other day.

    • It is a hybrid drive so part SSD

      • My work laptop has a hybrid drive - it's still slow.

        • Ok, I've got one in my home PC and it's pretty fast.

    • +1

They'll slap $200 bucks extra on a 256gb ssd when it costs like $90 bucks to buy one… ill take the "mower engine" any day and transplant my own

  • Note futu online has a few Asus rogs and MSI gaming laptops for about 300-400 more. Much better processors and I think one has an ssd too?

  • I'm uninspired

    • +3

That is a poor latitude attitude to have

  • +6

I'm typing on this same laptop right now, bought it from the last 20% sale.
It's a great laptop!! I put a M.2 Samsung SSD in it straight away and took out the stupidly slow 5400 stock hdd it had in it. I got the 250gb M.2 SSD running the OS and the Samsung 250GB ssd 850EVO. Runs like a beast, don't look back..

    • +1

Hi may I know which m2 ssd you got?

      • +2

I have the Samsung 850EVO M.2 250GB. I got it from Umart, looks to be $129 from the website now.
It's so easy to install, you just slot it in. I cloned the OS from the stock hdd to the M.2 and this was a fairly easy process. Even for a person whos not that into computers like me.

Just double check and send them a question about the M.2 slot. I realized my laptop is exactly the same except my cpu is i7-6700HQ.

        • Coolio! Did you use the official samsung app?

    • …These don't support m.2 do they??

  • Not sure if i should regret buying the asus ux303ub for $1279.20 and gotten this instead.

    • You should.

      It's life

    • +1

have you compared specs? they are completely different with different purposes.

  • anyone know the wired ethernet port speed?

    • +1

      Since I have this laptop from the last 20% off I just ran HWinfo to get you this information;
Network Card: RealTek Semiconductor RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
      Maximum Link Speed: 1000 Mbps

  • can anyone tell how this one compares to Lenovo ThinkPad E460 i7-6500u (3.1GHz) 8GB FHD 14" 2GB VRAM $799 Shipped @ Lenovo deal?

    • link pls ??

    • +4

      Lenovo Thinkpad E460 - Dell Inspiron 15 7000
      CPU: i7-6500U - i5-6300HQ - very similar performance wise
Battery: 47 Wh - 76 Wh battery - Much larger Battery Dell
GPU: Radeon R7 M360 2 GB - GTX 960M 4 GB- Double the Vram on the dell more for games and applications, The GeForce GTX 960M is quite a bit (approximately 95%) faster with regards to FSAA explain
Price: $799 - $1119.20 - Thinkpad Significantly cheaper but significantly lower specswise
      RAM: 8GB PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L (1 DIMM) - same on Both
Screen: 14" IPS FHD - 15.6" IPS FHD slightly larger screen on the dell
Intergrated graphics: allthough the Cpu's are pretty equivalent the i5-6300 has Intel HD Graphics 530 vs the the Intel HD 520 graphics on the the i7-6500U so the integrated graphics on the dell are also higher performing.

      • 6300HQ is waaaaaay ahead of the 6500U. The 6500U has 2 cores and hyper-threading, while the 6300HQ has 4 cores. Performance of the HQ isn't too far off a desktop grade i5.

        • +1

Yeah woops, I was looking at a specific bench that showed the overall performance as pretty much equal didn't realize that the i7 only had 2 cores LOL. The hyper-threading does help a bit but you are still going to get 1.5 X better cpu performance with the i5-6300 cpu (Dell Notebook)

  • +7

Clearing stock before the release of mobile pascal and polaris based GPU'S, if you care about graphics performance it's probably worth waiting a month or two…

  • Thanks guys. I dont know I m more tempted towards Dell xps 13 but it is expensive $1500 upwards. So, not sure but i do want something light weight.

    • +1

It's up to you, depends whats more important for you power or portability & aesthetics ?
All those XPS 13 model's lack dedicated graphics and only have the intel HD graphics
All of them also the the low power dual core "U" variants of the i5/i7 CPU
And as you said they are heaps more expensive $1500-2000 even with the discount.

  • Never saw the point of 4GB VRAM for these lower end GPUs considering the fact that you'll be performance limited if you max out the settings in any demanding title. Unless you're fine with 20-30 FPS. Eh, I guess it's useful for some light 3D workstation use…

  • FYI there has been a slew of similar 15 & 13 Inspirons on the Dell Outlet lately, some new, some refurb. Not all quite as well specced, but some have been. Prices are generally 1/2 to 2/3 new and the stock seems to be updating daily.
    http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…

    • There's not a single one on there with a 960m or a 6300HQ/6500HQ CPU, none of those are a similar spec to this deal.

Infact, at the time of writing this post, there's not a single machine with a quad core CPU and all the GPU options are really bad. So the laptops in your link are very, very far away from the specs of this deal.

  • If I wanted to spend a bit less money (on a laptop for my mum) would this deal be ok - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-5000-Core-i5-620…

With the 20% off, it would come to $599.

15.6-inch HD (1366 x 768) Truelife LED-Backlit. Mum's eyesight isn't great so maybe this screen will be ok. At least it's an i5.

I worry that no one has posted this as an individual bargain (unlike this one or the Inspiron 11) so would I be too much of a jive turkey if I bought this one?

    Cheers,
    James

    • That's a great deal. 1366x768 should be unless she's a power user. If this deal was still on, I'd probably have recommended that though.

  • Am looking for a new laptop for the home office. Doesn't get used really for gaming, but does get used for detailed modelling work (as an example) so needs some good grunt. Before this post was thinking about this 15 5000 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-6th-Gen-Core-i7-… . The RRP is $200 higher, it has more RAM and a touch screen, which I like. However the 7000 is listed on Dell's website as a higher spec unit. Interested in people's thoughts.

    • +2

The one you've linked has a significantly slower processor and much weaker GPU

    • Honestly, touch is just a novelty on these laptops without any stylus integration (i.e. Wacom…), especially since it doesn't flip. You can upgrade it to 16GB by getting a 8GB DDR3 stick (~$50).

  • Nice thing about touch screen is they are glass so easy to clean and don't scratch …..

    • A) This is not a touch screen.
      B) Touch screens on laptops without an articulating screen (tablet/tent mode) are a horrible idea.

    • where do we even begin?

      everything.

      • I seriously have no clue that's why I'm asking the Graphics Card is the big thing that's obvious but everything else has higher numbers on the Toshiba.

        • +1

          Dell has:
Better CPU - quad core and 6th gen vs dual core 5th gen
          Better LCD - FHD 1920x1080
          Graphics card - GTX960 4GB significantly better

        • Thanks for actually replying mate.

Ok so the processor is better this review showed they were on par edge slighty Toshiba
          http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-5500U-vs-Intel-Core-i5…

Dells Graphics card significantly better / kills it
Dells hard drive is better being whatever that new type of drive i've never used before

The Toshibas Ram 16gb vs 8gb doesn't mean alot?

          Appreciate it

        • +1

          @wrjcu:
My bad, didn't realise this Dell is an i5. My opinion is an i7 "U" cpu is pretty much an i5 with more cache anyway

Ram is easy to upgrade - about $50 for another 8GB stick, CPU, LCD and graphics can't

        • +1

Quad core can be better for some programs and games.

          Other differences, not mentioned above:

          Toshiba lighter.
          Toshiba has DVD.
Toshiba has Windows 7 vs Windows 10 in Dell.
          Dell has 3 x USB3.
          Dell has backlit keyboard.

        • +2

          @wrjcu:

The i5 in the Dell crushes the low-power i7 in the Toshiba for most tasks. Here's a better, more reliable site that uses user-submitted results http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-5500U-vs-…

The Dell has a GTX960M graphics card, giving far more compute power and double the VRAM of the 930M in the Toshiba.

Battery is also 74Wh in the Dell, compared to 45Wh in the Toshiba.

Dell also has a Hybrid drive, so basically a 1TB HDD with an in-built SSD to store the most used files such as startup files etc.

As already outlined, the Dell has a 1080p display, compared with the low 1366x768 of the Toshiba.

If you want more RAM in the Dell, you can get another 8GB for ~$50. It won't make it any faster unless you're actually using more than the included 8GB.

  • Grabbed one of these for my son… he is smashing Overwatch smooth as a cat! He loves the Dell and says he plays all his games on decent quality settings. The 1920x1080 screen looks great. It's a good buy!

    • How's the battery life on it?

  • Went to see this at jb hi fi but found this to be bulky for my liking although specs are great.

  • Did anyone buy this laptop and now having a sudden black screen issue? My laptop is 1 day old and it already has this serious of an issue. Basically the laptop screen goes black leaving the laptop and keyboard on. Now my 5 year old acer laptop is more functional than this junk.
