  • combine it with the 5% off + jb giftcards and that tv goes down to about ~$450 (cheapest 55" smart tv ever), s6 edge ~$540, ps4 ~$370

  • Anyone know if Ps4 now 4k ultra players as well?

Or is this coming in new PS4 version 2?

    • +2

Version 2 will support 4k video. This will not.

  • +3

The S6 Edge is tempting. I've broken the screen on mine and I'm looking at almost $400 for a screen replacement! An extra $200 gets me a new phone and I can throw this one straight in the rubbish bin.

    • +5

Your broken one will sell for 150+ on fleeBay..

      • +4

It's ridiculous that the cost of screens are making new(ish) devices almost throwaway. Until people start looking at phone repair cost as being as important as battery life when choosing a phone, the manufacturers will just carry on regardless.

        • +3

That's the way it is these days…We live in a "throw away society" Nothing is made to last long term…
Use it until it breaks down then put it in the bin…Sad really :-(

        • @ThePunchingBag:

Because we keep buying even when they build it like that.

        • @ThePunchingBag:

          Yeah, it certainly is.

        • @ThePunchingBag: >That's the way it is these days…We live in a "throw away society" Nothing is made to >last long term…

Use it until it breaks down then put it in the bin…Sad really :-(

Rather than painting yourself as being a helpless victim and claiming it's making you sad why don't you choose to not purchase the products you're complaining about?

You're crying about something that you have direct control over.

        • & people were laughing @ me when I posted Otter cases from dick smith sales as too expensive and a rip off. I stand by my purchase 110% the Otter case is worth the extra money a million times over

    • Insurance?

      • +1

I think you're missing the point. Half the cost of a high-end phone to have the screen replaced. Mine is only the outer glass too as the digitiser is fine…..problem is that they come as a single unit.

Nevermind. As you say, get insurance. Next time I'll get a phone as part of a contract rather than buy outright.

        • Great phone though!

        • +1

Some home building and contents insurance policies will cover portable items for accidental loss or damage (I think the phone has to be specified though). Excess usually $100.

        • @so3n:

          Aaaah,….beautiful hindsight :-)

    • -3

Buy a screen from Ebay and DIY, cost you no more than $50

      • +9

LOL - You don't have a clue what this phone is, do you?

        • +3

haha, didn't realise that… Noted, I'll try to avoid any Edge in the future.

    • +2

I broke my iPhone 6s screen by accidentally dropping it. I went straight to Apple and a $149 later had a brand new screen. I found that the small phone repair shops you often see in shopping centers were quoting me $200-300.

      • +1

repair shops in markets do it cheaper.. i just had a screen replaced for an iphone 6 at Vic market for $85. 6S was approx $100.

      • +3

To be fair to Apple, their after sales support is probably the best out there…..in any sector.

        • Not my experience with them. Every time I've caved and bought an Apple product since I was a kid I have been burnt.

    • +1

That's ridiculous. Did you get this price from Samsung store or a mobile repairer? Friend of mine just got his S7 LCD + back glass replaced yesterday and only paid $240 for everything. This was from Samsung store in CBD.

      • +1

That was from repairer in the city (Brisbane). Maybe I will contact Samsung direct and see what they're currently charging. The only problem is that I know I will have to send it away and God knows how long it will take.

        • +3

Samsung store quoted him 4-5 business days when he submitted his phone on Friday last week. He called back Monday this week and it was ready for pickup. He only picked it up yesterday.
They also offered him an S5 mini as a standby phone while his phone was getting repaired, so that's a bonus too.

        • +1

          @crazyleo:
That's pretty good service but I just wish they'd keep a stock of reconditioned phones and swap one for one for the $240 fee…..like Apple do. Just seems a clunky way of doing things.

Just off to my local store now to get it sorted. Hopefully they'll offer me a phone too…I've got my Nokia 6700 gold ready if they don't!!

          http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FFYv5MmzH1M/TuCDDbxwFAI/AAAAAAAAB3…

        • +1

          @gasman70: LOL.. that's gold.

    • +1

its 350 for repair from samsung store. Yeah expensive, and thats how they make money :(

    • hey gasman70 contact samsung to fix it if you have a spare phone lying around. they do it for so much cheaper but usually takes 2-5 weeks.

Got my S7E LCD screen fixed for 280 bucks. S6E probably will be even cheaper.

      • Same, got my S7E screen replaced for $280. Strange thing I think they charged me $299 instead upon looking at my statement despite the receipt showing only $280. Might have to make a trip back to the store and question them about it.

However, i dropped mine off Monday morning and picked it up later that day. Very impressive speedy service.

Going through Samsung is the way to go. Particularly for this phone because it maintains its waterproofing.

        • +1

dude you're lucky you live near a samsung repair shop. I live in canberra and there's no authorised repairer as well as Samsung store here so I have to send it off and it took like 2 weeks to get it back =(.

Local repairer quoted me $600 incl. labour and I thought that was pretty bs.

As much as I love my Samsung I gotta give it to Apple for the after sale service. Apple Store would've given me a new phone, and they have their store everywhere :/.

    • yeah, new old model phone

    • +1

S6 Edge screen replace from Samsung Service centre will cost $240. I did mine from George Street Sydney and got my phone back in two hours.

    • S6 Edge screen replace from Samsung Service centre will cost $240. I did mine from George Street Sydney and

      • Yep, you were all right. $240 with Samsung but it will take a few days. Like I said before, it's a shame they don't just give you a reconditioned phone for your broken one and the cash it costs to repair. But I suppose that would be too easy.

    • It's almost s7 money (grey import).

      • I had a good look at an S7/S7 edge today. Fantastic phones - premium quality feel…possible better in the hand than the iPhone S6+ and the screen is incredible. I was waiting for the new iPhone 7 release but now I'm not so sure.

        • +1

I would think there would be some discounts on the s7 when the new iphone comes out, might as well wait a few more weeks

  • +2

Is the Soniq TV better than the Aldi Bauhn 55" TV?

    • +2

I am in the market for a new TV and am confused by how to assess the relative value and performance of the Chinese rebadged products. I don't know how to check if they are good or bad, so it's a crap shoot… which causes me to deem it all too hard and not buy anything.

I wonder if there is some cross-reference somewhere that compiles that (eg) Model XYZ1234 is same chassis as Changhong Model ABC9876. Would help with sourcing and swap of spare parts too, moving forward. I'm guessing that lots of componens get shared between models and brands, with only the panel and plastic housing being altered to suit different markets.

    • +1

Me too…have to make a call soon betweent he Soniq or Aldi Bauhn …so response from someone who has more information would be greatly appreciated! One difference I see is the 60 day return policy of Aldi which is very inviting.

    • +3

Aldi 55inch 4k UHD LED TV for $599 is yet to be released, so no one (apart from the supplier) knows yet.

ALDI's trademark "Bauhn" is applied to units from different no-brand-name manufacturers. So experience with previous model is useless in predicting experience with another model. This will be similar with all cheap rebadged electronics.

Built for a cheap sale price, no real specs provided - just features to entice purchase, rarely any professional reviews, not available in other stores to compare & can't see operating, may sell out quickly (& may never be restocked) - before any reviews are available.

Aldi electronics are a gamble. Some will be good, others crap. But 60 day easy return is designed to help people forget about that.

      • +1

        ^"This"^
Love your spot on diplomatic wise answer.

    • Soniq is a smart tv with wifi using Android TV 4.4.2. Bauhn doesn't have this - it's Ethernet and no Android TV
      Sonic has 3 year warranty
Bauhn is UHD, but only useful if you have a UHD streaming device connected (eg: Roku)

      • Yes. Aldi has only 1 year warranty - after that there is unlikely to be support nor parts/boards available for repairs.

I have bought & returned Bauhn products as generally substandard to DOA. I kept only 1 which does a good job (but only after I spent many hours with the manufacturer/distributor diagnosing faults & working through changes to firmware). Participating in Whirlpool forums, many complained about the lack of service from suppliers & lack of interest in the issue from Aldi. If you buy from Aldi, most times the only remedy is a refund. Lugging back a big TV is no fun.

Although I have no experience with Sonic - it has Australian support & sells reconditioned units, so can expect repairs will be possible beyond the 3 year warranty.

Plus you can buy 7% off JB eGift cards to reduce the price further $35 (less useful $5 membership)😯

  • Not sure whether to get the S6 or wait until Google announce their new Nexus phones :\

    • get the S6

    • Nexus all the way

  • +1

S6 edge is prone to black and frozen screen problem, beware! I have just sent mine (1.5 month old) back to the retailer as it totally died suddenly in the morning. (sleep to death)

a lot of similar cases online, so have a look before buying.

    • Thanks for the warning.

I've been burnt with 2 LG G4 phones going bad. First was replaced same day. But it's a week and counting for repair on the second one under warranty (assuming they accept it is a warranty fault…phone is just about pristine and not rooted).

    • So like every Android device then.

    • hard resetting the phone doesn't work? (home + power + down button I think)

      • it worked the first time but not the second time. Bing lee is now sending me a new unit as they also cant turn the bloody phone on.

        • good to know because I just bought this phone last night

    • Did you buy your online ?? Was it Australian Stock, bought mine from JB HIFI have not had a problem

      • bought it from bing lee, au stock, only 1.5months old. a lot of black screen cases online, i dont think local stocks guarantee problems free. but bing lee is sending me a new unit, hopefully the next one is good.

        • Okay hope the next one they send works out. I have the 64 gig S6 edge. I swear by mine & am really happy with it. Although all I have to compare it with is the LG g2 because I don't do iphone I just think its easily one of the best phones on the market. Get a really good case for your phone I swear by the otter case but anything that protects the curved screen wil do

  • Anyone know if the Soniq Smart tv's work with Plex?

    • Not sure, But other way is to just buy chrome cast Gen 1 for <$40 and u can get it working

    • I would:
      1. Believe so, as Plex is available as Android 4.4.2 app. (And this TV is an "Android TV").
      2. Be skeptical, as I've seen ports of Android for non "mobile" devices that are stripped from some functionalities because it was not properly adapted to the device (not optimizes to use the hardware available, or using software based approach to achieve some features, etc).

Sorry not being of help (mean, I'm not answering your question), but in this case is a bit of a gamble.
I use an Android TV box (similar to a Google Chromecast, but better and way more open). It even runs Kodi (the best media player ever! with hardware support for 1080 and HEVC/x265). I don't run Plexi because Kodi goes way beyond that. :)

      • Thanks for that, I will look into Kodi, this sounds like it might work better than Plex, which im currently using via a Chromecast to my Samsung TV, but performance is somewhat lacking….

Is the PS4 in store as well ? Doesnt seem to have click and collect option

    • Good question. Also is this a good price? Looking to get one for my kids for Christmas. Not sure whether to buy or wait.

      • buy it this is an excellent price for an excellent product

  • +1

I pick up Tcl couple days back under $395 for 40 inch FHD. Pretty happy with it. Simplistic tele and Full HD. Though I reckon Soniq is on par with Tcl i do realised many refurbished Soniq tele in ebay market.

    • My gold standard is $350 for a Soniq FHD 51" plasma refurb I got about two years ago. Not gonna upgrade till 50" OLED drops under a grand.

  • +2

$40 cash back (Mexicans only) on the telly and a whole bunch of other electricals. Change the model in the drop down box https://energyincentive.com.au/Television/SONIQ/E55S14A-AU

    • Only for Victoria :(

  • GREAT FIND

  • Pity it only comes in white for the s6 edge, otherwise it will be extremely awesome.

  • Why is this PS4 "Ultimate"?

  • +1

I think I'll just get the Big W bundle PS4.

    • that's my plan too, if there is actually any stock available!

  • +3

Pulled the trigger on the S6. Been waiting to upgrade my iphone 5C.

  • +2

is this tv any good at all? anyone with it at home?
they release new TV models like no tomorrow.. confusing!

  • Does anyone know whether JB HI-FI is still running $200 cash back promotion on old working mobile phones?

  • can we use jbhifi giftcard (already bought) when buying online? answer: CAN.

need more review for the tv.. is this okay in term of picture quality? not 4K just FHD

  • Tempted on the S6 edge, however $559.00 delivered from DWI. Is this DWI deal not better. Any thoughts?
    http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/Samsung-Galaxy-S6…

    • That's a grey import.

  • Soniq 55inch TV:

    Refresh Rate (Hz) - 50

    Any lagging in this rate?

    • gee my lg is 200hz now im worry about quality of this brand

      • read this: http://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/what-is-the-refresh-rate
looks like it's not a big deal

        Conclusion
For TVs, the refresh rate means nothing, especially given that manufacturers inflate their numbers. A TV with a high refresh rate is not guaranteed to be free of motion blur. Even for console gaming, there is no advantage in using a 120Hz+ TV, because console video games are capped at 60 fps anyway.

For gaming on a PC though, a monitor with a higher refresh rate is definitely worth it if you have a strong enough graphics card.

The next pages of this article explains two features usually found on 120Hz+ TVs, but which are irrelevant to gaming.

  • Ready to purchase the Soniq 55", waiting for more reviews please. Looks like the cheapest 55" for the price.
