Get 5,000 points for free when you add a supplementary card to your Amex card by telephone only for October 2016 November 11 2016 or around then.

I found out about this by accident when I phoned up Amex to dispute a transaction, and the girl told me about this offer. I'd already applied for a supp card on the website and the girl told me the points couldn't be applied, so I just applied for a new supp card!

You only get the points once, I asked about adding 3 supp cards and was told the promotion would only trigger once.

PHONE applications only!!

I don't think this is advertised anywhere and it's not targeted from what I can tell.

    I tried to add a supplementary card on the website only last week and they wanted proof of identity documents, like the number of a drivers licence or passport. Your results may vary, but be prepared to have to provide this information as you may be required to.

          @themirror: yes, that's the same that happened to me too. They called me to ask for the other person's ID numbers. It's something to be aware of because they seem to be cracking down on issuing supplementary cards in some respects.

        It actually depends on what AMEX MR scheme you are on, as they convert to airline and hotel program points at different rates.

        'Ascent Premium' (Platinum Charge) converts to 1:1 for all airline partners, 'Ascent' (Platinum Edge) 1:1 to all airline partners except Emirates (1:0.75), and 'Gateway' (Explorer card, Essential card) converts to 1:0.75 for airline partners. All AMEX MR points convert to SPG at a rate of 1:0.5.

    Do you know if this is 5k point per Amex card you hold that you add a supplementary card to ? Or do you only get it once regardless of how many cards you have ?

      Not sure but I can confirm if you ring up saying you want to cancel they offer you 1k points to not cancel. I recently closed mine so I can jump on a different promo with a bank. =)

    Can you add a supplementary card in your own name, ie supplementary card in the primary cardholder's name. I think I read somewhere here on ozbargain someone managed to do that. If so that would be very nice to qualify for this offer.

        It's easier if it's in your own name in case you have stricter cashiers who check the name (which they are absolutely entitled to do)

    I got this offer for both my Qantas Discovery and David Jones black cards. I then rang up again to get the offer for my parents also, and they were ineligible I was told because they've had AMEX cards for less than 6 months.

    Just rung them, they can't give a sup card to me, it needs to be another eligible person. Wife already got one, kids and pets are not eligible.

    Call them up to cancel the card, wait for the extra points offer for not cancelling (8K from memory) then once secured, ask for the supp card and get the additional 5k points.

    I have both the qantas discovery and the velocity escape cards. With the qantas card, you can have up to 4 supplementary cards with no fee. How many supplementary cards can you get for the velocity escape card with no fees?

      Not sure about Velocity Escape, but I guess it will be the same as Velocity Platinum, which you can have up to 4 supplementary cards for free. I just confirmed this with Amex yesterday.

      I didn't take much notice, but it might've been '0', '0'. In any case, listen for the option that lets you speak with someone. There was no option which said, "To add a supplementary card and receive some bonus points, press….."

      when i spoke to amex on the phone, i asked about this - they confirmed that the new supp has to be in someone elses name other than the primary cardholder's name in order to be eligible for the 5000pts :(

    This hasn't expired. I called today, as did my housemate, and the deal was offered. I was told it would be credited up to 6 weeks from 11 Nov, so I assume the deal expires then.

        That makes sense. I was told the credit would be applied 6 weeks from the 11th. They will accept people until the 10th, then start processing the credits from the 11th.

    My housemate called soon after I did. He was asked for the person's name, date of birth, driver's license number, and phone number, where as I was only asked for the name and date of birth. He was then emailed a link to the supplementary card application web page, which again I wasn't. I can't see why a link to the web page was needed when the person should have processed it over the phone. Unless it was to make it easier next time, but the email didn't really indicate that.

    I guess we'll see what happens.

    i called today and yes the promo known as 'word of mouth' (according to the Amex consultant) is still being offered until early November. He asked for the name and date of birth of the person and said that subject to approval, the card will be sent in 3-5 days. He also said that someone might call for further details of the applicant. Points will only be in the account in 6 weeks. Hope this helps!

    Spoke with two operators last night and asked for the promo straight of the bat. Added a supplementary card each for my Essential and Platinum Edge cards for a total of 10000 points. One operator asked for name, address, date of birth and relationship, the other additionally asked for license number.

    I assume the whole supplementary card thing is only for AMex issues cards, not bank issued.

    Online banking only offers additional cards witht he same number
