Good price but surprised they don't go cheaper since Microsoft backtracked on the promise of DVR capabilities.

  • Does it support the latest stream codecs etc?

  • Thanks dude, been waiting for a price drop on these without any success!

under $20 is what i wanted to pay, so cheers!

  • Are there any compatibility issues we should be aware of, given it is coming from the UK?

    • -2

Probably not. The stock would be all the same whether coming from the UK or Australia (made in the same factory). Besides the UK uses PAL TV signal transmissions the same as Australia. When you set it up there should be a country selection menu where you can select Australia for the automatic TV channel tuning.

      • +3

You'll find that PAL / NTSC / SECAM are all irrelevant terms in digitial TV. While both the UK and Australia use DVB-T for digital transmissions, they differ in the codecs used for those transmissions. SD in Australia is all MPEG-2, and that is the same in the UK - but HD is a bit of a mixup, with the UK using H.264, MPEG-4 and other codecs.

But this device should handle anything. If it doesn't, it should be able to be handled by the Xbox for decoding, which means anything should be fine.

        • There is still a difference in Hz where NTSC uses 60Hz and PAL uses 50Hz. With this tuner you need to make sure that the tuner is set to 50Hz in the Xbox One settings. It'll still work with 60Hz but it gives off the motion sickness effect and is difficult to watch.

That said, it's all software side on the Xbone so it is all the same receiver in US, UK and Australia.

        • New ABC HD is transmitted in H.264, no?

        • @iampivot: I do believe so, first H.264 transmission in Australia, although I think they are simulcasting MPEG2 HD too. Poor ABC24 got a few notches down in quality.

Doesn't seem to be any Win 10 driver :(

      • +4

Like those xbox 360 & xbox one controllers, xbox 360 camera, kinect etc etc that couldn't be used on a PC? It's USB so someone will figure out how to write a driver for it eventually

        @hollykryten

        oh not you again..

I currently use a PS3 PlayTV USB tv tuner and works okayish, and has for the last 4 years.. I want to get rid of it because Win 10 hates it and is forever updating the driver to one that doesn't work..

Console USB tv tuners are usually just rebadged OEM products that work fine in windows..

You should really think before you post cos it's obvious you have no idea whatsoever.

        • I use a PlayTV with Win 7/WMC on my HTPC. Works perfectly. I just use some Elgato drivers.

      • BOOOOMMMM

No DVR capability? Your mean with this tuner and Xbox you can't record a show? Pretty useless

    • +3

Yep. You can set 4GB of space on the Xbone for TV recording but it's only for pausing/rewinding live TV. Not for DVR purposes.

That said there are some good things about it. The menu is decent, although the xbox remote isn't great as it doesn't have number buttons. You can stream TV on the Xbone to any Xbox app device in the house (ipad, android tablet, phone, etc)

      • -1

I thought you could if you had an external drive attached?

    • +1

Licking my lips at the price…didn't know this accessory existed. Then I saw you can't record with it. What's the point? I'd pay $1 for it given it's just for 'watching TV once' only.

      • It's alright for watching something when you're playing a game, I use it when the cricket is on or something like that. Originally MS planned for it to be able to record but they changed their mind.

        • Yeah… Every mainstream low (to high)end TV has a DVB tuner or 2 built in, making what 'couldve been' a special accessory for the console to something that most every other device can do built into its hardware at base cost. Don't understand the thought process from Microsoft.

  • Yeah I really do not understand why the Xbox doesn't have DVR, Microsoft advertised it as the full media replacemen, Id love to replace my aging PS3/playtv combo as its by far the best PVR I have had and I've purchased all the major brands.

  • So this would allow someone who doesn't have an antenna to get free-to-air TV through the Xbox?

    • +1

You plug the antenna connection into it.

If theres no dvr etc then whats the point to have it when you can just push a button on your tv remote and switch to F2A? Is it just the split screen thing that makes it worth it??

    • You can stream the TV to your Xbox Surface app, so you could stream live TV to your iPad while on the toilet or while in bed even if you don't have a TV in your toilet or in your bedroom. It's crazy that it doesn't have DVR but it is what it is.

  • Cheers, been waiting for a good deal on this.

  • +1

If you have a smart TV, why would you need one of these?

    • +1

stread fta tv to your phone?

      • *stream

  • So what is the current good decent no-frills 'ebay' USB TV tuner with twin tuners?
This one looks like it has very limited appeal (I noticed it about a week ago at another UK site but refrained from importing after finding out how useless it was).

  • Nice price for a new tuner, 'though this seems to be single tuner (according to this source: http://techau.com.au/review-xbox-one-digital-tv-tuner/).

With the Sony PlayTV (despite having to muck around a little to get it to work on Windows 10), you can play a TV stream and record another TV stream simultaneously or if you prefer, play two simultaneous and independent fta TV channels ('though I'm assuming PlayTV wouldn't work on the Xbox).

    • TV on a pc seems like a hassle, like it would have impressed in the 90s but today it seems like another potentially processor intensive background app.

  • If you just want to stream live TV to your iPad through your xbox one and the Surface app then this is pretty good price for that, if you even still watch broadcast TV. It's very limited so basically it's usefulness is watching TV through the xbox and the surface app, and pausing it (and hoping you don't accidentally change the channel which will erase the paused recording!).

  • Thanks OP!! Haven't watched free to air since we moved the telly to a different location. I guess we could have used any antenna to get F2A but atleast this has a PIP component as others have suggested for when the cricket is on.

    • …and someone else suggested I can sit on the toilet and watch F2A too using the xbox and streaming to phone? LOL

      • You can PIP on your iPad if the video stream supports it, so you can watch fta tv and check the cricket while on the toilet.

  • Can someone give me the lowdown on howw to actually use one of these, i've had mine for a good year and just can't work it out, anyone got any media player/box that is compatible to change channels etc?

    • +1

…this is probably why it's discounted. Nobody can make semi-decent use of it.

  • Has anyone gotten their tuner yet? Just curious. Let me know yeah?
