Continued from Comments / Feedback / Suggestions Thread 2016. This post will be used for general feedback in 2017.

Please make any suggestions for new features, bugs, things you'd like to see changed or anything else. Also feel free to start a new thread in Site Discussion. If it's a little issue perhaps use this thread, if it's a big issue then perhaps start a new thread. Please see the wiki below as your suggestion may already have been mentioned.

The majority of things you see, as well as policies on OzBargain were implemented based on user feedback. Please see the Site & Guideline Updates Announcement Thread to keep up to date with the changes/features that we implement as they are added.

  • how do i remove "association" to a store? I can't find it anywhere in the settings

    • There isn't a setting. Use Talk with a Moderator or hit the report link.

      • My Account > Stores
That doesn't take it off completely?

        • Yes sorry,

If you haven't posted a deal for your associated store, you can remove the association by going to My Account - Stores. Select the store and click association as none.

If you have posted a deal for your associated store, you will need to contact a moderator via Talk with a Moderator forum.

I find it useful to post back in the expired threads about how the deal turned out for me if I purchased. For example:
    delivery times
    quality of any support required
    smoothness of transaction
    quality of product/service provided.

I believe this would be valuable information for potential purchasers.

Many deals are repeated periodically (Woolworths mobile for example) by the same vendor. Having people leave feedback on previous transactions would be valuable.

It would be good to see a category or something where we could leave feedback on a purchase, so when I search through old posts for deals I can see whether people posted about their experience from the deal.

It might also encourage people to leave feedback which would add value to the posts.

Is there an easy access list of search parameters? Took a bit of hunting to find 'option:titleonly, was wondering what other parameters were available?

    • waiting for a wiki too :P

      • It's here.

        • cheers!

  • Would be nice if user -> comments links would take you to the actual dealpage#comment instead of just the deal page

    • +1

Click on the number on the right of the post title. It will bring out a popup listing all the comments the user has commented on that post. Click on them will bring you right to the comment.

      • Cool, thanks!

  • There should be a button which says "I bought this" so it will accumulate under "my account" and you can easily monitor all the deals you've bought.

    • Here or you can bookmark them into Folders

  • Might be worth adding points like this:
"The deal title should stand on its own without mentioning any referrals. Any product prices in the title should exclude the referral discount."
    to the Title Guidelines

    :)

    • We did have that in there already:

      1. Price. May include discount or saving (e.g. “$2 off” or “half price) if space allows. However, the price should NOT include any referral discounts or cashback (commission refunds) - include that in the deal description instead.

We gave the title guidelines a bit of a clean up though, clarified/re-worded some things and also added emojis under the 'titles should include' list.

      Thanks

  • Hi Scotty,

Have you considered expanding the for sale / classified sections of the site?

I only know of 3 very large forums in this whole country. We've got Whirlpool, Overclockers Australia and here.
Whirlpool (if I recall) don't offer sales.
Overclockers Australia has its problems (don't ask, just don't, I'm so angry right now)
    and here.

The problem is, if I list stuff here, I feel your forums are a little difficult to find stuff due to the font size, quantity of items per page, lack of ability to break it down into types?
Have you considered a few more categories? Maybe "Gaming / Electronics/ AV etc, General household and outdoor goods and finally 'other'" ?

You've definitely got a decent readership and I'd love to get eyes on stuff I want to get rid of.
Thanks for your time dude, I love the site, please consider some improvementts in this dept

    Have a good weekend.

OzBargain Classified was created because people were asking for it. Personally I prefer people to just use eBay / Gumtree / Quicksales instead — the last two are even free! Having a Classified where the moderators need to spend more time to police did give us a bit of headache. Just this month we have been discussing whether something should be allowed. We most definitely do not want to turn it into a marketplace, but it appears some vendors are seeking loopholes to dump their stuffs on OzBargain.

In short, we are still tinkering but don't expect much from that section of the site.

      • That's unfortunate. The overclockers Australia forums are overzealously moderated to the point of ridiculous. Whirlpool obviously doesn't have it at all.

I get where you're coming from, it's a shame there's not a solution. Please consider keeping them open in the very least.
Maybe consider one post a week there per member or perhaps they need to stipulate the value / estimate income from the goods, (field to enter upon submitting?) and they can't enter more than $200 a week or something? It'll be obvious they're lying if they post brand new hardware and put "estimated income $200" in the field.

The real issue with gumtree is selling items which people /don't know they need/ - which is what your site also offers.
My 'nerdy junk' is generally priced extremely reasonably, just stuff I've collected as many of us do - especially OzB people, stuff I've built up over years, in my case decades. But people don't go on ebay or gumtree and search for "6 old modem routers, work fine - could be useful for blah blah" - so stuff like that is best put front and forward to a community of fellow gadget nerds (again, Ozb, OCAU and Whirlpool)

        TLDR: please don't close em.
        Thanks Scotty

  • You know how there's a "View All" button next to the page numbers at the end, right? Well how about improving that by allowing users to upvote/downvote or and reply to comments in this view, as because right now, all you can do is just view the comments and if you want to upvote/downvote or reply to a specific comment, you have to use the page view and if there's like lots of pages to go through, you would have to guess which page said comment is in and then slowly look for it on said page and if it's not there, go to the next page and so on…..and then once you replied/upvote/downvote, you go back to View All because you can't be fek'd clicking on page after page after reading the pages so you want all of the pages to be shown on one screen and all you have to do is just scroll and scroll until the last bit and then there, you've read the entire comment section of that particular deal/thread.

And then you find another comment you want to say for example, downvote because you don't agree and then comment on why to support your downvote warrant but you have to go back to page view and then this process repeats……

EDIT: On that note, can you also add a View All button to your comments and voted sections(or and reveal all the pages so I can just click directly to a page I want to look at?) so you can see all deals and forum discussions you've subbed to or replied/voted to without clicking next page, next page, etc.? Or at least a way to sort all those deals and threads you commented/voted on, on unread replies? Because for example if someone replied on a thread from the start of 2015, I would have to go through 12 pages to before I see there is any unread comments that needs to be read.

    • The voting buttons were disabled for performance reason so we could cache the entire page, as those are quite intensive to generate.

You can just click on the date/time of the comment, and it will bring you to that comment in the normal pagination view.

      • Ohhhh…..fair enough….how extensive? It can't be that bad, can it…?

Ohhhh…..didn't know you could click on the date/time of the comment…… :S But that's still more than one step; was looking for a one step process by just clicking on Reply button and then you can just type in your reply instead of having to click on date/time and then click on reply… :P

Ok, what about a View All button for your Comments and Voted section of your own profile so you can check up on what's happening with past deals and threads you voted/commented on?

  • Not sure if this has been suggested before, can we have a wiki? Or even a sticky in every subforum with the best advice.

I've seen a lot of forum topics that are constantly being repeated e.g "going to Japan, advice needed" "buying a first car, please help" and so on. There's a lot good advice in the past which will get buried as time goes on. More forum topics are definitely good but I also think it's important to collate the best advice since they're more or less the top voted comments in these threads.

    • The bit above the forum post listing is actually from wiki although currently only mods can edit. We might need to link to somewhere where everyone can edit. Agree on travel & auoto forums.

I bet scotty/moocher are all over it, but the search function has been really really slow lately.

    • +1

I have this exact issue using FF v53.0 64-bit. Been happening for a while now. Searches can take up to 30 seconds to return a result at times.

    • +1

It turns out that one of our front end servers have bad connectivity to the backend search engine. Most searches are completed under 200ms but if you are unlucky (1 in 3 chance) you might execute your search on the faulty server that takes 20seconds to complete.

I'll schedule it to be restarted some time today.

  • OZbargain could do with a forum/classifieds section for international sim cards. I just gave 3 away from my last trip to vietnam, cambodia and malaysia. all were valid sims - some had expiry periods, some just required topping up.

many of us go to some country and then come back with a sim card that could be re-used by another ozbargainer for their trip. it would save time and money and forums posts. people list the sims details as - Country, expiry date, data and or voice value left

something like the Entertainment book voucher swaps.

    • What's the issue with using the classifieds?

      • there are a lot of classified listings. a sim listing page would simplify the search. also encourage people to sell/swap/ offer/whatever. if may make life a little easier for people travelling to what ever country if they hit the ground with an active sim.

but then if people use the search function in classifieds….

I made a feature suggestion here, for the optional labelling of deals during posting. So that a poster can specify that the intended target audience is just the common/beginner bargain hunter (C-OzBer), as opposed to those who consider themselves experts in the area.

Members going through deals, can decide for themselves, whether they want to skip a deal marked as an C-OzBer deal.

This will cut some slack for the average posters, and send the appropriate signal/warning to those who consider themselves more expert bargain hunters, to be less judgmental, as they are not the intended target audience.

If this is considered a valid issue worthy of addressing, then it will be nice to have some small code support at the posting time, i.e.,

    • provide the option to select the “intended target audience”, during the posting of a deal.
A poster does not have to select, in which case, it defaults to how it works now.

    • If the poster specifically choose the intended target audience to be the C-OzBers, then the post can automatically be denoted – e.g by prefix or whatever means in the title.

I guess just by specifying a convention for the poster to follow - e.g. prefix title with a particular word etc, would work too. But it risks posters using variations in notations. So a little support during the posting stage, can ensure consistency in how it appears in the title.

Having said all this, I am making the assumption that "what is a bargain" is up for debate. If it is the site's intention all along, that bargains should to be judged by those who are skilled (experts), to cater more for a specialist bargain hunter community - that is a valid aim as well, and I withdraw my suggestion.

    Anyway, just my 2c.

PS. Obviously, C-OzBer/E-OzBer are convenient terms for discussion only, better namings needed :-)

    • I do not think it is going to work.

      • For deals OP — added complexity at posting, and who decides whether it's a beginner's bargain? Bargains themselves are quite subjective, so one's excellent offer might be someone else's spam. Moreover if there's a promise that deals marked as "beginner's bargains" will get less judgemental from the community, wouldn't everyone mark themselves as one?

      • For keyboard warriors — they aren't going to care whether it's beginners or experts. In their own mind they are just going to talk down everything. In fact they might even target those beginner's deals.

      • For moderators — damn even more work for us.

      • Yeah, valid points. Especially 2. Could end up being counter-productive.

  • wheres the monthly stats for last month?

    • Not done yet

      • :( :(

  • I am aware that the ability to change ones vote has been brought up, and that it is a policy not to allow it except for fat-finger mistakes. But I have a feeling that this restriction has more negative impacts than positive ones:

    • If I buy from a deal, I usually upvote it. If I had subsequent issues with the retailer, I can no longer alert people to it with a negative vote. Who is in a better position to 'neg' a deal than someone who actually went for it?
    • People, including myself, withhold positive votes for deals where they are not sure it goes through, so that they can give a negative vote if required. This results in a bias towards neutral.

Although I agree that vote-changing for comments does not make sense, I think deal-votes are a different matter as the reality can change. Could it be reconsidered?

    • If you have purchased a deal and some weeks later you have an issue with the retailer, there is little value in placing a negative vote as that deal is likely to have ended or at best it's long forgotten. Negative vote is more so for to warn people about past issues you've had with the retailer, therefore you'd negative vote the next deal with details/example

      Guidelines

      Major issue with retailer
      Didn't receive previous purchase. Example
Shipping time exceeding expected wait. Example

      • +1

That's fair enough, but if I see a deal for a lesser-known retailer, I sometimes check previous deals posted for that retailer, and read comments on how people went. Negative comments could serve as a red flag for when a purchase didn't work out.

  • Can we implement a sort by price value amount based on the given prices in titles for certain product pages.. maybe grab the lowest dollar amount in a title and sort by descending order.. might not catch all or be 100% accurate but it would help for say trying to find the lowest historical price posted on this site per se.

This would be great in finding the best deals for a certain product when viewing a product or store page depending on what you are looking for.

Thank you scotty, beam me up.

    • Unfortunately not possible, there are many prices in the title and not all are for the item, eg shipping price or a previous price or no price at all. Developing such a feature that might only be 80% accurate can do more harm than good, it's something to reconsider down the line if we redesign our deal submission form perhaps.

      Thanks

      • Ah ok cheers thanks I was just thinking it might be good for stuff like electronics to get a quick brief history for comparison's sake but I guess it would be more work and difficult to prioritize and select and also unfair to other categories that don't get selected.

  • I'd like to see the page navigation [ < 1 2 View All] also available fixed at the top of the screen for easy "always there" access.

While I'm wishing, I'd also like the website to keep track of what I've already viewed, to (optionally) save me re-reading the same bargains when I re-visit later in the day.

Apart from that, very little I can think of that would improve the site. Keep up the great work !

    • Thanks for the suggestion regarding page navigation, it was discussed & will be considered.

In regards to keeping track of what you've already viewed, you should see an orange 'New' stamp next to deals you are yet to view on the front page or deal page.

      Thanks

  • Something seems to be a bit off. My thread notification setting has always been "Send at most one notification between my viewings of the thread". However, all of a sudden, I have started getting multiple notifications for the some thread between two viewings.

  • Suggestion: "L" Plate (or similar icon) displayed next to a new user's name for the first month or so after they sign up?

    • +1

"L" plate is not associated with how long have they signed up an account, but related to the first deals they have posted. Therefore someone can have their accounts registered for years but still get an L plate on his/her first deal post here.

  • +2

not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but can you include a button to sort comments into most voted? I do enjoy reading and seeing comments in chronological order, but for longer 2+ page threads in the forum or on deals, if there was a button/s to sort comments (next to the comments/ subscribe text at the top of the page) to sort posts, i think it will be helpful to find relevant information in a post quicker.
I think youtube has this feature, where most voted comments come out on top. but it would be handy for this site if comments (for big discussions) had sort functionality. TY

    • +2

We don't have comment ordering yet. However for posts with more than 100 comments you can click on "Top Comments" at the bottom of the page to show the top 5 comments by votes.

  • Can we get rid of the default post to General Discussion when posting a new forum post and instead get posters to select a forum, a la deal posting?

Might mean they go in the right place from the get go

    • Good suggestion. We're looking into it.

      Edit: Rolled out.

  • Hi mods

Is it possible to have a freecycle forum dedicated to ozbargainers who want to recycle household items seperate from the trading forums

Honestly I think it's a great idea as we can help some students or people with low income and we can help save the environment

I recently moved house and probably threw away a few grand of fully functional items 😔

Or a OzCycle.com.au website as part of your network 😎

  • Hey scotty/moocher I'm getting the following error when editing some deals:

Error: local variable exc referenced before assignment

    • +2

      It should be fixed now.

      • Thanks scotty. Was about to comment I'm getting the same thing.

    • The error should be fixed now, however one of our servers is down and you may see other errors until it's back online.

  • Is it possible to exclude Expired and Out Of Stock deals from personal settings?

    • Only for front page.

My Account —> Settings —> edit/deals —> check "Do not show expired deals"

  • +3

Would be great if the comment box supported standard Ctrl-Enter for submission.

JV would become more productive, and have time to submit more comments.

    • This would be great for competitions (i.e. referrals.)

    • Thanks for your suggestion, this should be implemented in the near future as an opt in setting. We'll announce it in the Site & Guideline Updates (Announcement Thread) 2017 thread once the administrators have completed it, assuming there are no unforeseen issues with developing it.

    • It has been implemented on the site as of this morning. For Ctrl-Enter comment submission, you need to opt-in from your settings page, under "OzBargain Settings" tick the "Ctrl + Enter to submit comment" checkbox.

  • Would it be possible to make it so new deals were only viewable by logged in users for the first hour or so then visible to all?
I'm assuming there are quite a lot of non registered users on Ozbargains these days but I could be wrong?

You could even go a step further and categorise registered users by their contributions and release the deals staggered so the likes of TA and Easterculture would get first dibs.
    Would certainly encourage deal posting.

    • Hi dan76n,

We appreciate your suggestion, I believe it's something that has been mentioned here or there in the past.

You are correct in saying there are more guests on OzBargain at any given time than registered members. For example right now it's about 4 times the amount:

      Statistics
      Online 1,094 users 4,144 guests

We do want to encourage users to create an account and participate, however telling someone they need to create an account to see deals 'live' isn't the sort of thing we want to do, nor would we feel that it would likely to cause someone to participate in OzBargain (more likely they'll create an account so they can see the latest deals but never actually use it).

Furthermore we want to encourage good quality bargains, and we do offer a small reward for those regular contributors via our monthly awards. However telling users that they'll get 'first dibs' on deals, if they post deals themselves could lead to users posting deals for the sake of that and not necessarily because they think it's a good bargain. Similar to users creating an account for the sake of that and not because they want to use the account. We also found previously that incentives for posting in any form can lead to a reduction in the quality of deals.

      Thanks

I've been discussing the behaviour of referral links with one of your colleagues. One aspect that came up is how the system should handle referrals where there is some doubt that the offer is still current/valid/will be honoured.

The only way we can be sure the offer is dead/changed is if someone let's you know, so I think an interstitial page should be displayed when there is some doubt or perhaps always to avoid possible blow back to the merchant or OzB. It should be pretty easy to do. It's pretty much the same page as currently being generated with a longer delay and some text asking for feedback. It could include an explicit OzB disclaimer too.

  • This may have been suggested before. I'd like to be notified when someone uses my referral on ozb. This way I can keep track and utilise the credit if all goes well. Thank you.

    • We would have no idea whether someone used your referral. Isn't that the responsibility of the merchant that provides referral?

      • I should have clarified. A notification when someone has clicked on your referral through OzB. I was browsing my referral settings page a few days ago and discovered a few clicks that had led to credits. Now, I too would expect merchants to notify me when someone has used a referral but that is sadly not the case.

  • Another idea I had today while browsing a product page (e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/logitech-m570)

Would it be possible to set up a product search alert whenever a new deal containing that product was posted if a user selects 'want'? Similar to the new search keyword notifications (thanks so much for that by the way).

    Cheers

    • +1

If you select "want" you will get an email notification.

      • +1

Oh, that's good to know. I've never received one in the past but that might just be an oversight on my part.

        • +1

My bad, the emails are from the IFTTT applet not from OzBargain.

        • +1

Out of curiosity, how are you using the IFTTT applet to notify you of want items?

      • This isn't a feature. You won't get an email notification.

For products, you can do a search alert which will email you when a post matches your search query.

  • Can we have a system like RetailMeNot for old deals (more useful as well if they are a deal with a coupon)? Sometimes there are old deals that are not yet marked as expired but that could just be because someone has forgotten to mark the coupon as expired. If there was a simple feature that allowed users to verify that it still worked, I could still determine if it's an active deal or not. It's different to what it is currently where it can only be marked as expired because there are some deals without an expiry date and it's useful to know when the last time someone was able to successfully utilise the coupon/deal.

For example, this deal would work great with the feature since it's around 2 months old. If I saw the deal I wouldn't be 100% sure if it's still working since the moderators may have just forgotten to mark it expired but if I saw that someone had successfully used the code a few days ago, then it's a good indication that it's still working. It'd be annoying to have a bunch of items in the cart only to realise the deal is expired because it was a very old post and had not been marked as expired.

    • Just hit the report link and we can fix things up.

  • Another idea I wanted to add was an ability to bookmark/save comments too, similar to Reddit. Sometimes users post pretty helpful tips or guides and being able to save them for future reference seems like a no-brainer to me considering this is a site on how to save money. Being able to save important comments would be a very valuable feature.

    • +4

You can now save comments to folders as well. You should see "bookmark" link under comments, and you'll be able to save comments in comment folders.

Do note that folders (under "My Account —> Folders") are now listed as either post folders and comment folders, and you cannot bookmark a post in a comment folder, or bookmark a comment in post folder. Post folders provide search but unfortunately we can't do indexed search on individual comments.

      Edit: Full details

      • +1

Nice addition scotty, thanks! Can they also be deleted once saved? Can't see that option.

        • +1

You'll have to go to the comment itself, click on "bookmark" and uncheck the folder it's bookmarked in.

        • @scotty: Thank you :)

      • Awesome! I'll definitely be saving valuable comments from now on

  • Final one, an ability to search title and description. You can currently search deal titles which is very useful, but being able to search title+description would be even better since there are many instances where the product cannot be mentioned in the title because there are multiple items in the deal and is mentioned in the description instead.

    • Thanks for the suggestion. Bookmarking comments will take a little work and might not be overly used as bookmarks are quite a hidden feature in their current form, but should be coming in the future - it's on the to do list at least.

We'll announce it in the Site & Guideline Updates (Announcement Thread) 2017 thread once the administrators have completed it, assuming there are no unforeseen issues with developing it.

Edit: Sorry that should be reply to the above

  • This is a pretty minor thing, bit I wonder if "My Comments" page could be divided into Competitions and Deals tabs?

Competitions comments are usually referral chains that don't need to be revisited.
I'm interested to see if there have been active discussions on deals, but they get buried under the Competition spam.

  • I suggest we have a space fleet type of ranking that would be cool :)

Has anyone suggested a site archive/snapshot for all the deals?

Sometimes the companies change their terms and conditions (like that IMBank scam which got a lot of us to sign up recently)

It would be good if we have something like this http://archive.is automatically, that we could point to in future if a company is trying to screw us out of a deal they promised.

    • Google cache does it somewhat automatically.

Archive.is and Archive.org both have APIs I think.

      • I reckon we need a blockchain based archive like this. Throw a hash of every archived site on a blockchain for trust-less verification that the site did indeed exist that way at that time.

    • +1

I asked a similar question - Preserving Terms and Conditions - back in 2015.

Other websites that archive but don't necessarily have an API are:

      www.archive.org/web/
      www.webcitation.org

Is there a feature in the pipeline that notifies you if someone mentions your username? eg. if someone types /u/ryanek, it will turn into a link to your user profile and I will get notified that my name was mentioned.

    • Thanks for your suggestion. This was also discussed, there are a number of hurdles in this and it's going to take a lot of work - although I understand there is some demand for this to be offered. We can't give any promises it will be added in the near future, but fingers crossed it may be offered down the track when resources allow.

      Thanks
