Networking FAQ's

  • I have NBN Fiber to the Node that requires VDSL, or I think I will be getting Fiber to the Node, but I'm still using ADSL2+. What should I buy?

The best choice is ASUS DSL-AC68, but also try Archer VR400 or the V600 series for budget range.

  • I have NBN Fiber to the Home or Hybrid Coaxial. What should I buy?

you can buy anything you want. But the best choice is the ASUS RT AC68U, and for budget users, try the cheaper ASUS RT-AC58U.

  • What is the TPLINK D9 Archer and what does it do??

The D9 Archer modem is a very high end ADSL2 modem router with USB ports, beamforming etc but it cannot do NBN Node…. but can be used for NBN Fiber to the Home, and NBN HFC (Hybrid Coaxial). It is a good value device and you can redeem the extra Wifi Extender.

  • What about VOIP?

For VOIP, you must ask your current ISP provider on details about VOIP compatible modems. The modems I listed here don't have VOIP ATA ports. You must purchase an external one.

why do you prefer vaya for lg v20?

eglobal is cheaper (after 15% off)
    LG V20

    • +1

Sure, will edit that when I get to my main PC.

I dont believe vaya has any stock with htc10. They are dodgy

That RT-AC68U for $168 after $20 cashback is bloody amazing.

  • anybody have thoughts on the Netgear nighthawk x8 d8500 ac5300 modem router?

    • Seems like a lot of money for a router. Unless you have multiple clients streaming 4k movies, you probably don't need it.

Heck, you can build a linux computer for less.

    • RT-AC88U

  • HTC 10 or S7 Edge? Or S8? Any tips/advice from owners?

    • +2

The HTC 10 and S7e both have great build quality. The S7e has a 5.7" S-AMOLED curved screen that might appeal to some people. The HTC 10 has a smaller LCD screen. The S7e camera is superior to the one on the 10. Audio output is better on the 10. Battery life is better on the S7e. Samsung pay (and Android Pay) on the S7e vs. just Android Pay on the 10. The S8 isn't a huge improvement over the S7e and is pretty pricey ATM.
Ultimately, your budget would be the major deciding factor.

  • Commendable effort by OP!

  • Thanks OP, Great work. Just a small type I noticed

Samsung EVO PLUS 32 MIcroSDXC C10

    Its 64GB for 31.92, not 32GB for 31.92 if anyone's wondering.

    • cheers, μSD card fix

  • My old adsl modem provided by TPG is not performing up to level . Based on NBN availability my area seems to be NBN ready by year end using the HFC option . Can anyone suggest a good modem which can serve me currently with adsl plus and later when I move to NBN on HFC (TPG)

    BRAND NEW LG G6 H870DS

From DWI someone please update this to the post. $504.05 after discount.

  • Awesome. Was going to buy a DSL-AC68U on the way home but saved $30 by being patient and ordering online.

  • Torn between LG V20 vs LG G6? Any pointers. Leaning towards the V20 coz its cheaper, has the extra screen, quad dac, removable battery and IR Blaster.

    • 100 dollar difference

      -2017 flagship
      -updated camera
      -the screen/body ratio
      -faster android updates (its newer)
-ip68 water and dust resistant if you care

The overseas version has a quad dac as well.

specs are nearly identical you wont notice the difference between SD 821 and 820.

IMO its all about the screen and camera if youre pro G6

      • Thanks. The reason why I am leaning towards V20 is because of review it has got as content creator, whats with its 3 microphones and all the other pizza's. I also appreciate the fact that it has removable battery and has actually got larger image sensor when compared to G6.

        • Yeah LG Camera app's manual mode has probably been the best camera app for content creators for years now. Enjoy your phone :)

        • @CanadianBeaver: Thanks! Just bought one.

        • what's the 3rd mic for? and doesn't the G6 have it, the content creation ie?

        • +1

          Don't forget the I.R. blaster…

  • +3

So for the S7 dual sim… DWI, buybuybox, perfect_mission or T-Dimension? All are circa $530 after code.
Which seller is recommended? Heard some not so good stories about DWI Ebay. T-Dimension used to be good.. and no idea about perfect_mission and buybuybox.
    Any recommendations for seller?
    Thanks

  • Can anybody please recommend a decent NBN router (FTTP) for around $100-$150?

Preferred to have an option for VOIP but its not a deal breaker.

I am preferring the TPlink recommended by OP but is there any other choice than Asus & TPlink?

    • Im also looking for one as well. My thoughts were just disable the wireless on my optus nbn modem and use the router as my main source of wifi. I don't think this way would affect the VoIP….

  • +1

Didn't buy anything, however take a +1 for the efforts :)

  • +2

Great compilation, FAQ is awesome, thank you!

  • Great list, thanks.
So tempted to get a new ADSL modem..but my NBN is supposedly coming via HFC soon…

  • +1

Bought the Asus RT-AC68U by accident!
I actually needed the DSL-AC68U (I knew the price was too good to be true)

Can anyone recommend a nice and cheap modem to go with this?

    • +1

      whoops :(

Do you have NBN Node or are you just on ADSL?

You could buy a very cheap ADSL2+ modem, maybe one that's used / second hand and you can hook it up to your ASUS in full bridged mode.

But if you are on Node, have to spend a bit more… this Netgear wired VDSL modem will do the trick for less than $70 dollars.

edited: chess got mistaken, so I reverted the table to the cheaper 20% Shopping Express Outlet vendor.

    • Wireless1 is not one of approved sellers on list for 20% discount unfortunately, so CTAX20 does not work.

  • Any decent lappy under $500 scrim?

  • Kudos for the formatting and effort.

  • That Edge from QD seemed like a great deal, too bad it's sold out now.

I'm surprised the HTC 10 made it on the list again. The 64gb HTC 10 from vaya_shop was not / never in stock in the last deal. Took 1 week before the seller notified us and another week for the refund to come through (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/310825#comment-4774796). Good luck to everyone who ordered from this round!

Thanks for this, i've been looking to buy a new modem router for awhile. Just letting anyone know that even thought the COUNT20 discount has expired for the tp-link vr600, it looks like sydneytec has matched the pricess of wireless1 shop, and you can use the CTAX20 code with them, got the tp-link vr600 for $114.40. Link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/291859777281

    • Thanks for the update Romie and thanks for the post Scrimshaw.
      Just ordered VR600
Great work on the FAQ made the decision process a breeze.

  • Prices have been updated again. Some items went out of stock, such as HTC, LG V20, S7 Edge and had to be updated or removed.

  • I bought the last RT-AC68U. Now I gotta find a TD-8817 for a modem.

  • Has anybody received their cashback? I'm still waiting.
