$50 Vodafone Starter Kit for $4 | $30 Starter Kit for $2 @ Harvey Norman (Port Macquarie NSW)

1000

Hi guys!!

This is my first time posting into the community so please take it easy on me.

I'm currently in Port Macquarie for work and happen to stumble across Vodafone starter kits for $4 for the $50 starter pack and $2 for the $30.

Happen to grab 6, but there are 100's left in store.

Not sure if this store specific but I just wanted everyone to know since we all love cheap SIM card!

  • Hope it's nationwide

How much data are we talkin?

  • +1

Think the $50 has 6gb and the $30 has 3gb from memory

  • +1

It said 3gb on the pack. Will try to activate once I get home

    • +2

      Huh??

    • +13

OP said he had only taken 6 when there were hundreds. Did you not read?

Unless you can prove that OP did indeed take all.

  • Could you upload a receipt as well?

  • +16
  • is there any expiry on the sim?

    • +1

      Traditionally no.

  • +2

I keep seeing these starter packs on sale… Can the top-ups be used without having to register a new phone number?

    • +2

Optus ones can just by registering it as a replacement SIM. Others you need to port out and then back in on the starter.

  • +1

sorry to break the bad news but i think the $30 Vodafone Starter pack with the activation key that starts with "U" has already expired and you cannot activate it online.

I've had problems with it last month and tried contacting Voda but they told me to return it to the store that sells it.

    • How do these SIM activation expire if there's no expiry date listed on the pack?.

    • I just activated a $50 pack with a U activation key 2 days ago, and it was fine. I guess it only apply for $30 packs?

      • the reps told me that sim cards manufactured in 2016 has a 1 year validity, which means any sim cards there after will expire 1 year after their manufacture date.

        • +1

Then it depends on when these sim cards were manufactured. They may be still ok if they were made late in 2016.

        • Good to know! Don't want to be stuck with packs that don't work… Note to self to keep the receipts, should be able to swap for newer ones since I got mine from Woolies

        • @assailantsky: I've bought mine from the Coles attached to Shell servos early last year not knowing the new policy about their expiring sim cards. so stuck with i think 4 $30 packs =(

    • Activation key starts with a V

      • +2

then good you. I am just informing other Ozbargainers to check the manufature date of the sim cards being sold. If 1 year have gone past their manufacture date, just don't buy it.

    • +1

I call bullshit. I have a few lying around that are from March this year that are manufactured early 2016 which I purchased in March this year.

I can still get through the activation process by typing it in the portal.

Those that work inside Woolworths can probably confirm this transaction took place from date and time. (Trusting you guys not to deactivate or do anything funny). The rest I'll leave blanked out.

My guess is that your sim didn't get activated at the supermarket/superstore. i.e. They probably reported it as stolen when then new batch came in and you got dinged, or was never activated in the first place. Some are preactivated on the shelves at some stores but cross-referenced during stocktake.

    • That can't be right. I literally just activated a Vodafone $30 starter pack TODAY at about 3pm. Activation key starts with an 'U' and it was manufactured 22-01-2016. My number was successfully ported in literally 2 minutes after activation from Lyca.

These $50 starter packs are so useful for a short trip overseas. Recharge on the 365 plus plan, get $50 my credit, then buy their int roaming addons for $35 (using the $50 credit) for 7 day usage with talk/data (60min talk, 60 txt and 250mb data) or data only. You can also divert/forward your calls/text from your current mobile sim to the Vodafone number while you are overseas if you are expecting important calls/text. Use the rest of the credit for some data/talk packs for when you are in the airport in Aust.

For only $5 in this deal (even $25 half price at Woolworths this week), it's the cheapest way to get roaming if you are with Kogan etc where roaming is not available. Very good find OP!

    • +2

Why not just get a local prepaid sim card?

      • Convenient if you need to be contacted, or need to contact people on your own number?

Otherwise what I would ask is why not get the Starhub SIM from Singapore instead? $15 with 2.4GB for 30 days is better than $35 with 250MB data. But of course that requires you to either go to Singapore, or transit via Singapore

        • I'm mainly US and China. YMMV I guess. Also I'm not spending $35, only whatever the pack cost. Not very good way to roam if you bought this full price! ;)

        • @assailantsky: Ah true it's not $35 in real terms because you buy it at discount like this :)

Not sure if you're aware of the Starhub deal I'm referring to, but given that you go to China and US (and both those coutnries are on the list), you could potentially take advantage of it if all you need is data. Here's the deal.

        • @illumination: Thanks for the heads up! I didn't know about this. But will try if I fly thru Singapore. I've never been there ever! :(

      • For my usage, i.e. business trips <7 days, it is cheaper to buy $5 or even $25 this pack usually discount to. Also, I like to be reachable via my Aust number and make calls back to Aust when needed, all the while carrying one phone.

    • Hey what do you think is a good sim when going to Sri Lanka? Not sure I can get this deal, but a sim with cheaper rates is okay too.

      • +1

Sri Lanka is not in the prepaid roaming addon country list, they'll probably charge you PAYG.

    • +1

Have just bought some $40 for exactly that reason. Do you just send the pack SMS when you land to activate the pack?

      • +1

I always activate before I leave Australia, never game enough to try what you are suggesting. :)

But you can also use my Vodafone app/website to buy/activate the pack if there's wifi at your destination airport and the text don't work. Also, mind the time difference when you activate the pack, Voda go by midnight AEST, you'll hate to activate at 11.59pm and then lose a day straight away.

        • Awesome, thank you, that is good to know.

Is a copy of the invoice. Sorry I had to make an account

  • +6

    Confirmed!!!! Activation is ok

    SIM confirmed

You are on: $50 Talk Combo Starter Pack. Includes 9GB Data, Infinite standard national calls & TXT within Australia, 90 minutes calls to selected 58 countries & 1000 minutes calls to selected 25 countries

  • Is this Harvey Norman - Australia Wide ?

    • I'm not sure brother…

There was literally 100's on the table. The sale person said 2 max but they allowed me to buy 6.

I was going to see if I head back after work to grab a few more since I know it works.

Even the $30 starter kits for $2 is cheap too

      • +3

Considering how far Port Macquarie is from the capital cities and the unlikelihood of anyone driving there for the sake of $30 starter packs, you could probably sell them in classifieds for $10 each and it will still be a win-win for everyone.

  • -3

Why buy these when you can get kogan simcards for 1$ with 14GB data on vodafone network?

    • Where's that deal?

      • Once every few months you'll find these on OzB.

    • +1

I buy these for when I need international roaming, since I'm on Kogan and they don't have roaming.

      • They don't even have international calls from within Australia !
Thats why I don't purchase them as I need int'l calls.

        • Not sure if you are referring to the $50 starter packs or Kogan. Depends on the plan you activate, the $50 Voda talk combo plan does have international calls included.

        • @assailantsky: Kogan, sorry

    • +3

Because those Kogan vouchers only last for 3 months, and the deals aren't guaranteed to come often.

    • Is that even available right now?

    • Thanks for the neg, this was a genuine question.

      • -2

        Those were genuine negs too.

  • I purchased one when it was $16 back in February .. what a rip-off it was then.

I'll now wait for it to come down to 10c :)

Ha, good luck with Vodafone working in Port Macquarie.

    • Ive been up here on and off for the past 2 years and it's not too bad. Telstra is great on the drive up and down but while in Port Vodafone is fine.

Faster than my crappy ADSL internet but NBN is around the corner

      • +1

        Port Vodafone

        I like the name!

        • Telcos work best in their home ports.

      • You mean "while in Port, Vodafone is fine"?

      • Yeh not to bad, I live in the area and it's so sketchy, that it is way behind Optus. Which is complete shite….. I'm only saying this through experience, I'm definitely not a Telstra fan boy, but need reliability.

    • I've got the Kogan sims and they work just fine in Port Macquarie.

      • Yeh, I work through the mid north coast and vodafail is too unreliable, I appreciate it may work in Port, but good luck if you leave the city limits.

What can we do with so many sim cards?

  • edit

  • Wow, can someone mail it to me. I will pay ;)

    • +1

$54 for one starter kit. Postage included. Deal? ;)

      • LOL, you keep them safe mate.

  • +2

I think a heap of Vodafone SIM starter kits flooding eBay soon for some thing like $10 or so.

  • What a deal if it's nation wide

  • broden?

  • Canberra by any chance?

  • +2

please take it easy on me.

No you posted an awesome deal, put up with it. Thanks for posting!

  • +1

    None at Chadstone

  • Can anybody confirm whether these are available at other HV stores

  • Hope Melbourne has this deal too

  • +6

No luck. Scanning at $50 in Nunawading VIC.

  • +1

It would be funny if these starter kits were meant to be at say $40 for the $50 kit and $20 for the $30 kit. $4 an $2 seems way too cheap for these. Some one at the store stuffed up?.

  • +2

    None at HN Joondalup.

    • +1

None at HN Osborne Park or City West

  • any1 actually confirmed this deal in sydney? if so where

  • funny how harvey norman online states 'clearance' on the $50 sim pack, yet its $50 lmaoooo and one 1 per person rule..
just thought it might be available online haha

    • Great first post btw Ranine lol
      bonny ;)

    • Yeah i think they must have put it up that way as a bit of a joke, it's been that way for months. As if they want to see if the Professionals will spot the joke about the clearance.

  • None in garden city, upper Mt Gravatt…
