  • Locked?

    • Can be unlocked. Could be a fee, but I don't actually know.

      • For the recent iPhone SE deal, Telstra unlocked for free with a simple chat

        • Where's the SE deal? ;m interested

      • +3

Iphones from 5 upwards are either unlocked or can be unlocked free of charge.

        • thanks updated the deal title.

        • Do you have a link for this? From Telstra:

Telstra Pre-Paid mobiles (including iPhone) and mobile broadband devices are locked for use only on Telstra's network. There is a fee to have your Pre-Paid mobile phone unlocked.
          - $80 for devices activated for 6 months or less, or never activated; and
          - $25 for devices activated for more than 6 months up to 2 years.
There is no unlocking fee after that.

        • +2

@Cleartype: No I don't sorry. Only going off past couple years of working at Telstra. I have personally unlocked the 5s prepaid and SE prepaids for free. Unless they have recently changed I haven't done one in around 6 months. Perhaps confirm with an online consultant but as Zixtee said above they unlocked his prepaid telstra SE for free.

        • @Rochie: Brilliant, thanks for following up. Seems to be the consensus below too.

        • @Cleartype: My friend just did a live chat with Telstra and they said that there is an $80 unlocking fee. Does anyone know if you can just use the link to unlock for free?

        • Yeah bought 2 of the Telstra Pre-paid SE's from Officeworks that were supposedly locked but nope, worked straight out of the box with Optus SIMs.

        • @MrFunSocks: I know plenty have done with the SE but has anyone done it with the iphone 6? My friend is hesitant as the Telstra chat people told her she would need to pay the $80 to unlock the iphone 6.

        • +1

@polar: Just spoke to someone from the unlocking team on live chat and confirmed there is no fee. To quote transcript:

Zita: Got that. To confirm, it's an iPhone 6, is that correct?
          Me: Correct
          Zita: Thanks for confirming.
Zita: We can unlock the phone for you without a cost.

        • +5

@Cleartype: Some customers get one price, other customers get another. Like all Telstra's services.

        • @polar: You just got to try live chat again. You get some people that just do it for free and some that will want to charge you for it. Just tell them you are going oversea and want to use international sim.

        • @highdealer: Thanks for clarifying confusion.

        • I can confirm unlocked for free via Chat. No questions asked.

  • +4

Same price as the SE but bigger screen with 1 gen older chip.

    • +3

      Worse camera too

    • +1

My vote goes to the SE mostly because of the faster chip (6 was just a bit too slow for me, though it could also be the extra RAM for all I know), but most people will be happier with the 6 if given the choice between the two at the same price.

  • As far as I'm aware an iPhone 6 32gb model does not, and never has existed. iPhone 6 exists in 16gb, 64gb and 128gb models. What exactly is Telstra selling here?

    • +5

      It exists as of May.

    • +1
    • +10

I'm very shocked to learn that the iPhone 6 32gb model does in fact exist. My mistake. What a bizarre release schedule for the iPhone 6.

      • +1

Maybe they are killing the SE after all.

      • +1

It's been out for a while. It phased out all16gb and 64gb with 32gb and 128gb respectively.

  • +13

1GB of RAM makes this a non-deal imo. Be better to go with SE.

    • SE with more RAM?

      • +11

        SE has 2GB.

        • Why can't Apple just put more RAM, they are not expensive nowadays.

        • +11

Because Cook is USbargainers, every cent counts.

        • +2

          @ausdday: lol

    • +10

Yep iPhone 6 is slow on iOS 10 and death on iOS 11.

As a comparison iPhone 5 on iOS 9 is much snappier by a long margin.

I'm using the 5 to check I'm okay with a smaller screen, and waiting for an upgraded SE.

      • +5

        I wouldn't call it slow on iOS10.

I have a 5S which is even slower than a 6 (although not much, they're rather comparable) and I'd still call it perfectly fine on the current OS. It may not be blazing, but I've never really thought 'wow this is slow'.

        • +3

          Agree 6 is fine currently

    • +1

I've got an iphone 6 at home that I used for a few weeks back in late 2015 and I never noticed any slowdowns. Having said that I didn't have many apps on it but I found it perfectly acceptable.

      • Well if you had no apps, clearly it wasn't multitasking.

        • +3

"Having said that I didn't have many apps…"

Aside from 3-4 hours a day on the phone and texting, I was running 3 email accounts (1x Exchange, 1x Gmail, 1x IMAP), Whatsapp, Google maps navigating for an hour or 2 every day, Google music at all times in the office during the day, and Google photos backing up between 20-50 pics a day. I agree it isn't a huge load on the phone, but for someone who doesn't use facebook/instagram/snapchat etc or play games it was a perfectly acceptable daily phone. I couldn't stand ios though, so it now lives its life as an expensive ipod.

      • As an example, Google Maps takes about 4 seconds to load. Snapchat about 4 hours.

Webpages struggle to scroll in perfect sync with the finger. Sounds wacky but it somehow destroys the magic, it feels so clunky.

        • +2

My wife uses an iPhone 6 and it experiences none of the issues you describe. Just loaded Google maps and it took less than 2 seconds to render my area.

Snapchat launched instantly. Webpages scroll fine.

Perhaps your iPhone 6 is faulty, or needs to be reset as my wife's iPhone is still very fast (iPhone 6 128GB), purchased on launch day,

        • @changa: The more storage on a iPhone the better the storage access speeds and performance. The base storage model of the 7 is heaps slow compared to the 256GB one.

        • +2

@auna: mine is 16gb, and as I said above I never had any issues with speed.

        • +1

@auna: work phone is iPhone 7 32gig - never had any issues with slow loading etc compared to a 7 - 256 gig wife has.

    • +1

Yep, the SE has iPhone 6S internals.

  • Can anyone confirm if SIM cards of Telstra reselling carriers (TeleChoice, Aldi, Boost, etc) will work in a Telstra locked phone? TeleChoice rep on web chat seems to think no.

Appears to be an $80 unlocking fee for pre-paid devices if unlocked within the first six months.

    • +1

I got my Iphone 5 unlocked for free the same day.

      • Okay great, thank you. That was a prepaid handset rather than on a plan right?

        • +1

          yes Prepaid handset.

  • +6

iphone se is better for less.

    • I personally agree, but it's certainly debatable.

      • +5

agree. For some people, size does matter

        • motion of the ocean

    • I got SE from work and its a piece of crap

      • +4

        can you please elaborate ?

        • +2

The screen is tiny. And because work is being cheap that's why they got SE, which has the screen of a 5. Majority of the upper level managers don't like them and wanted minimum iPhone 6.

Its really only for sms and emails. Nothing else. Tiny screen not useful.

I use it for hotspot exclusively

        • @neonlight: fair enough. I watch Amazon prime on mine.. Half way through the grand tour!

        • @neonlight: What sort of business they're running over there?
Unless it's got some sort of partnership with Apple or big business, it was a stupid decision from Mgmt.

FYI it's an Australian Manufacturing company.

I guess that industry is dying with the cost of utilities

      • General consensus across the internet is that the 5 SE is an excellent phone - is your faulty?

        • Not 5 SE but 6s SE if you want to put it that way

        • @spillmill: As you probably know, the 5 SE is the smaller screen equivalent of the 6S, and is a more rounded version of the 6S - screen compromises taken into account.

          So, is your phone faulty?

        • +2

          @Boodek: There's a 5. There's an SE. There's no 5 SE. That's what @spillmill meant.

  • +4

Had the 6. Now use the SE. 6 was noticeably slower

    • +5

That's because the SE has 6S internals.

  • +5

This price should be the 6S not the 6

    • +4

6S at this price right now? Such deal will have 100+ votes and most likely sold out within minutes.

  • Hmmm, I have a 6, works fine for me. In no big rush to upgrade

    • +1

This deal is for the iPhone 6.

  • -8

get a real phone not a hipster phone for instagram wannabes

    • +13

Try not to cut yourself on that edge.

      • You talking about my Samsung Galaxy edge or the recycled idiom white people use.

    • +1

      Grabs popcorn 🍿

    • lmfao

  • Does anybody knows can the price be same at JB-HiFi as they also Telstra Resellers.

  • Can we use cashrewards? cashback for $125? Is that true?

    • Direct quote from CR website;
"Cashback is only available when you take up a new phone on a 24 month Go Mobile Plus plan and handset repayment.
Note that cashback is available and redeemed from Cashrewards (not Telstra)."

  • +6

I actually sold my iPhone 6 for a SE. SE is better in every way unless you want a bigger screen

    • I did as well. Wasn't happy with how slow the 6 ran when full of apps. Loaded the same backup to an SE and it runs a lot smoother now. I also forgot how much I miss my 5S.

  • +3

My iPhone 6 is still a great phone. I do tonnes of stuff on it. Run heaps of music apps and lots of large games (like PC ports of various adventure games with full voice acting etc). Sounds like some people here expect flagship performance from a 3 year old phone.

  • Can anyone please confirm it is unlocked? Came to a telstra shop, they could not confirm

    • +1

it is very likely locked, like se, but unlock for free

      • My bad. They looked confident that it is not free to unlock.

        Anyone got otherwise?

        • +3

Ummm…. have you read the other comments on this page?

  • +1

Same here they are saying it will be $125 for unlocking

    • tell them to (profanity) off & will complain to Apple.

Apple devices should be FREE to unlock!!

    • +3

Generally, people just go to 24x7 chat and ask for iPhone unlock. Worked for me in the past with iPhone SE. Obviously, you don't need to actively mention that the Web page says that the normal unlock fee is $125 unless you have a prepaid service with Tel$tra for 6 to 12 months, in that case the unlock fee is further reduced. The 24x7 chat support staff are generally quite helpful.

If you asked retail store staff, they are obviously not going to say it is free to unlock.

You can also try the page OP listed. For me, what I found was the time taken to unlock it depends on Apple. One of them was pretty much unlocked within minutes. The other one actually took a lot longer (I had to wait overnight - I tried both that page and 24x7 chat and still took hours). So, don't expect immediate unlock (it is not like other phones where you just enter an unlock code - this one requires Apple to update their database).

If you are really really scared that you cannot get it unlocked, then simple.. don't buy. iPhone 6 is a bit dated anyway.

I am an android man but i have noticed that iphones have very good resale value.
Why would you pay $449 for an iphone 6 like this when you can get a grey market iphone 7 for around $759 when deals are available?

You could use the iphone 7 for 2 years and still sell it in 2019 for around $300.

Who will buy your $449 iphone 6 in 2019???

Also once the warranty is up there is no difference between an australia stock iphone and a grey market iphone.

    • If you measured the resale value by the resale price, yes iPhones will have decent resale value. But, if you measured it by % or the actual difference between buy and sell price, they may be worse. For example, my mate still has iPhone 6 and he paid over $1000 few years ago.

Grey market iPhone vs local - there are two differences. Local ones, especially if you purchased from Apple directly, come with 14 days no question asked money back guarantee. I have returned items back to Apple (and OfficeWorks) within 14 days - due to dead pixel found. Imagine doing that with grey market ones - certainly will be more painful. Believe me, I returned multiple brand new iPads due to dead pixels. The other difference is the plug. Imported ones often come with HK or China plug.

      • "Grey market iPhone vs local - there are two differences."

Yeah, I'd probably go a bit further. Not to suggest that grey market products are bad, but another consideration is that you can't necessarily be 100% sure of the origin of the phone, well frankly you can't. The main reason for this is because the warranties fall back onto the seller and not the manufacturer, so if you get the phone and it's not what you thought, or wanted, you have to go back through the seller.

If you get it and it's been opened or what-have-you then you again must pursue the seller, who knows how easy or difficult this process might end up being. It could be super straight forward, you may end up with a brick or effectively a second-hand product.

Really, warranties of any kind is basically like buying insurance (apart from the kind provided by Consumer Guarantees), you're effectively betting against anything going wrong with the phone against the cost. You might save maybe a couple of hundred but if the product, whatever it is fails, and you're then not able to return or have the phone fixed you might be out the entire cost of the phone.

My advice for anyone thinking along these lines is to consider worst case scenario's. If you buy grey import and the phone dies can you financially cop the cost of buying another phone?

      • I just sold my iphone 4s last month with faulty Wifi for $100+ on ebay. A 6 year old android with faulty wifi will get nothing.

I sold my first gen ipad for $300 when 4th gen ipad was in circulation.

In saying that, I rather use android but cant beat resale of apple.

        • +3

How much did you paid for your iPhone 4S? I paid $900+ for iPhone 4 and sold it two years ago at a huge loss (at least 75%). How much did you pay for your 6 year old Android phone?

I still have iPad 3rd gen which I don't want to sell (because it is only worth about $100, which is not worth the trouble). I had Acer Liquid MT years back, sold it two years later and ended up only losing $30.

When you do the maths properly, you will realise that you lose more actual $$$ with Apple products. That's expected. Don't get me wrong, I have loads of Apple products. It's like saying second hand Benz cars can sell for much better value than Toyota cars. But once you do the maths, you actually realise you lose more $$$ for Benz cars.

I have an Android phone with Snapdragon 820 CPU which I paid around $230 for. Even if that thing is worth $0 now, I still lose physically less $$$ than my iPhone 6S plus. Sure, I can sugarcoat it and say that my iPhone 6S plus most certainly worth at least $230.

        • @netsurfer:
In the end a popular phone (any apple) will still sell better after 5-10years. A lot of androids will be washed out and obsolete.
          Wife bought a 4S in 2012 for $750+
My sony xperia z bought in 2013 for $750+. The newer fully functioning android was very hard to sell and sold for $80 (very little interest on ebay). The apple 4s with broken wifi as indicated sold for $100. Populartiy creates more bids and more money.
Might be more comparable if we looked at samsung vs apple for popularity but other android phones do not have as much popularity after 6years.

        • @MountFranklin:
Both phones were base models of 16gb
And both sold at same time.
Same original priced phones. Apple bought 2012, sony 2013. Sold same time. Apple sold for more.

        • @MountFranklin: $999 is $750+, $751 is $750. Your example, the difference in sold price is $20. so if iPhone 4S is $799 and the Sony is $750, then Apple doesn't really come out on top. However, I do see your point with that particular Sony phone.

"Sold for more", as I pointed out, is not necessarily a good measurement. For me, I bought iPad 3 because of the retina display and Apple released iPad 4 few months later - which completely destroyed the value of iPad 3 (in fact the price difference between it and iPad 2 on the feeBay market is so little). However, I expect and accept the fact that I lose way more in real $$$ with Apple products on a consistent basis. The amount I lost in iPad 3 was way more than the cost of my Nexus 7 2013 tablet so even if that Nexus 7 tablet is worth $0, it still comes out on top. iPad 3 will most likely sell for more.

This site is OZB so in terms of bargains, there are more Android bargains. Apple products, like other products have certain models which are better buys than others. The "S" series phones do seem to have less issue so far, so they retain values better than the non "S" phones.

The touch screen issue on 6+/6 is a design issue. It is less of an issue for iPhone 6 than 6+.
          http://www.smh.com.au/technology/mobiles/the-touch-disease-t…
          http://www.smh.com.au/technology/mobiles/apple-agrees-to-rep…

        • @netsurfer:
I couldnt remember the exact cost but is was like $750-$760 hence the $750+ but that wasnt good enough for you. $750+ is around the $750 range. Based on your assumption, $750+ could be $1000000000. Like I said, I couldnt remember the exact cent so it was around $750+. Both phones were comparable prices.

Yes this is ozbargain. People go to much more effort to get a freebie but as you said, its not worth your time to sell something for $100.
Id rather sell an apple item that is 6years old over a 5 year old android. BUT I prefer to buy android because I hate IOS.
