Read it as iPhone X 256gb now 70278.. was about to jump on it. 210832 is still a rip.

  • +34

This is one of the most uneconomical ways to use Qantas points.

    • Would you share your opinion on the best ways of using Qantas points?
      Thank you.

The oneworld "Aound The World" fare. 280 000 points, Business Class, 5 cities.

        • Does this include Taxes?

        • +3

yes, but not everyone can just drop everything and do an "Around the World" trip ie. young families etc

HDay asked my opinion on the best way to spend points, so I gave it.

But hey, if you want to spend 200 000 points on an iPhone, be my guest. More flight rewards, business upgrades and RTW ticket availability for me.

        • +1

          @nix1016:

No, it doesn't. That is an extra cost. There are a few things you can do to avoid huge taxes (like avoid flying in/out of London for example).

        • +3

That article is crazy - only 140,000 points for a Round-The-World trip in Economy class (I'm too plebeian to fly Business). Up to 35,000 miles and 15 stops, wow.

Sign up to a couple of decent credit card promotions (book your hotels on the cards to hit the required spend) and you've got enough points to circle the globe.

        • @railspider:

Yes, however each time you sign up for a new credit card your credit rating takes a hit. So proceed with caution.

Additionally, you need to book well in advance, unless you are at least Silver status, preferably Gold.

pointhacks.com.au gives very very detailed articles on how to use QFF points

From what I read, the use of QFF points (best value to worst value) can be sorted this way:
        - Seat upgrade
        - RTW redemption
        - Classic reward flights redemption
        - Sell on Ozbargain classify for 1c per point
        - everything else are almost a waste of points, (eg. QFF store, gift card redemption, pay flight ticket using points, etc etc)

        • umm they actually say?

          • Sell on Ozbargain classify for 1c per point
        • @Baghern: No, because Qantas forbids that activity and it can get you banned by QF Loyalty.

        • @Baghern: my bad. I read about selling points from ozbargain. Or if you don’t sell the points, you can ‘help’ people to buy their flight ticket using your QFF points

        • @Kyanar:

It was in reference to what b0b0 Pointshack article reference

      • Upgrades from Economy to Business are generally the best way to use points. Potentially $7000 or so worth of value for ~120k points on an SYD-LHR fare.

Also Business class RTW tickets are great value.

        • +5

Obviously this depends on how much an individual values flying Business Class. I’d never spend $7000 of ‘real money’ on upgrading to Biz – so it’s silly to assign that value to the points.

RTW though looks terrific value - gives me a good reason to keep collecting those QFF points.

What are all these people doing here in a deal about using points at qantas store when they say this is not worthwhile?

    • +1

Actually this is pretty awesome in Qantas terms, and you don't want to go through the 'selling route'

Even though business class is great, most people still see it as a waste

      • Redeeming for normal Economy flights (especially with the 30% reduction right now - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/343861) is still a much better way to use your points, I've used mine for a Jetstar flight previously without hassle. If yo

I don't see it as a waste, but yes I usually fly economy if I am paying myself, with the exception of the RTW fare because it was so compelling with points.

  • +8

Just going to note that most people value QFF points at $0.01 per point.

    • When you can redeem them at $0.06-$0.08 on flights, I value them at over $0.05c

      • You still have to pay taxes. It's not so bad!

      • Can I sell 300k points to you at 0.05c :P

        • I am happy to take it. Here is your 0.05c. Sorry have to round to zero.

        • +2

Sure why not. Offer accepted. Very generous of you.

          0.05c is not $0.05…. it is $0.0005

So happy to get a good bargain on ozbargain.

Can't believe they have an Iphone 6S up there, who is considering one of these as an "new" purchase option?

    • +3

I bought an SE to replace my iPhone 5 a few months back which is essentially a 6S as far as I know. Very happy with the upgrade.

      • +1

I just wonder how much longer they will be on the IOS upgrade path? I have an iPhone 6 plus, I'm not dissing the model just the upgrade IOS longevity given it is quite old technology now.

        • Valid point.

  • How often does this flash sale occur? Still waiting on points courtesy of Westpac.

  • Thanks OP,

Now I can go get Bose QC35 II

    • Enjoy! :-)

    • Me too, just ordered one as well.

  • Tempted by this, I have 200,000 points but I’m put off by the comments about this being an uneconomical way to use points.
I figured everything on the store would be inflated.

What are the economical ways to use QFF points?

    • +8

      flights

    • +4

      Upgrade flights

      • Not really, booking flights outright is generally the most economical I think?

        • Long Haul flights, but it's a lottery unless you have Gold or Higher status on high-volume routes.

The best value for Platinum/Platinum One are long haul business or premium economy to Business (or Business to First) redemptions.

        • +1

          @drewbles:

Yeah but for this you also need to book flex/not discounted fares.

        • +1

@hypie: and that is the issue. You need to book the more expensive flights and you have no guarantee of upgrades. We've just decided to use the points for booking the cheaper fares.

        • +1

Classic award flights yes. Any seat awards, NO. Those are down near "gift cards" in the poor pricing ladder.

      • If you can get it.

    • You can calculate the conversion rate as follows:

(Points divided by price) x 100 = conversion rate.

A popular deal for gift cards a little while ago on the Qantas store gave a conversion rate of 0.86c per point which equates to 116.4 points to the dollar I believe.

This isn’t for gift cards though, but you can use this conversion calculation as a guide to determine if you are getting a good deal. Just make sure when dividing by price you don’t use RRP, use the sale price you can get.

      • Gift cards often provide better value than the points/$ conversion as you can use them to buy products on sale, etc. Buying direct from Qantas store is similar value to using gift card for a full retail price item.

Business class flights or sell them

      • tuvz, thought I'd ask you in your FF wisdom:
If I amass a big collection of SQ KF points (through AmEx points etc), and assuming I have enough points to book a RTW F award redemption, would it be easy to do that or would I need status to be considered?

        Many thanks!

Flights in Business (or First). In particular upgrades to either.

Unfortunately it's also very difficult to use them for flights unless you're QFF Gold or higher and damn near impossible for international travel on remotely popular routes. Upgrades are an even worse proposition because you need to buy a more expensive fare to attempt an upgrade in the first place and QANTAS won't actually process upgrade requests until the day before the flight.

TL;DR: QANTAS store may not be the most economical use of points, but it's typically the most practical, especially if you're otherwise getting your points for free (CC signon bonuses, etc). An uneconomical use of something free is still better than no use at all.

      • Sell them to your ozbargain “family members” and get 1c per point cash

        • +2

Also an option. Bit too risky for me personally as I have LTG and wouldn't want to chance my whole account being cancelled.

If you're going to sell, make sure you do it for all your points at once. :)

      • You can call them up and get them to book reward flights on the phone showing availability above your frequent flyer status, but it's an extra fee (at least you used to be able to do this. I think it was around $40 when I did this a couple of years ago)

Oneworld Round the World tickets :

140K Economy, 280K for business class plus tax

(up to 16 flights and 5 stopovers)

      • +1

And 420k for First, but kinda a waste :)

      • yeah but you will need another 280K to take a partner; I would presume most of us wouldn't be travelling alone.

        • +7

          140K ~ put partner in economy ;)

        • +2

@Hellfire: then again if you propose this to your partner you may only need to fork out for the single ticket - and half of everything you own.

        • +2

@try2bhelpful: I think I'm the one who would end up in economy :(

        • @Hellfire:yeah, well that might earn you a "special" treat.

    • +2

I rarely travel too, so I plan to keep on accummulating points and redeem it for goods. I never mind sitting in Economy anyway

    • Buy an economy flight then use your points to upgrade to Business class. I've done it a few times to and from LA. You cant buy the absolute lowest class discount fares but you can normally get a return economy flight for around $1500 ish then use 90k ish points each way to upgrade to Business Class. Not guaranteed, you only find out if you get the upgrade a day or so before flying but buying business class tickets straight up is probably around $5K.

      • Just to clarify, you can't buy the absolute lowest (sale fares) to upgrade?

Which fares ARE eligible to allow an upgrade to business then?

        Thanks 🙌🏽

    • +1

      Upgrades for sure.

    • +1

Like others said, upgrades is best.

However, I don't fly Qantas much, only for work, so I spend my points on toys. Last time I got an Apple Watch.

    • +4

      Thanks all. Pulled the trigger.
Love OzB. It has saved (cost) me sooo much $’s…

    • +2

No this deal is pretty awesome for Qantas and those who have no interest in buying anything else or selling the points

People who see it as a waste have the time, the knowledge, just the pure inclination to get that value for money which can be a chore or even irrelevant to others

What people ignore regarding points is accumulating means every year you save you've lost points on depreciation. ie 5%-10%

There are buyers here who will buy your points through what some consider shady backdoor methods at 1c a point, so $2000 for you. You still have to put the time effort and trust into this. Not everyone is inclined to.

The whole business class thing is only relevant to those who actually value business class at the retail price point. I like most don't so don't see the "amazing value" it is.

If you're like me then and see the above and want an iphone X, I don't, this is great value
