iPhone SE 32GB Optus Prepaid $299 (In Store) @ Australia Post

1870

Purchased an iPhone SE 32GB from Australia Post today for $299. Looked like it is their regular price now (no markdown ticket). Outdated phone, but was only buying it for a relative so thought it was a good price. Possibly only available at selected stores.

Mod: Limited stock, likely to only be found at corporate owned locations (not franchises). Thanks EarlyBird. Limited stock available (deal was previously removed last week as the OP posted a deal but there was no stock available at that particular store, in this case stock was noted by the OP and other users).

    How is this a duplicate?

    • Dupe of a deal from a few days ago which was removed.

      • Ahhhh ok

For anyone who will be buying this AND wanting to claim TRS, make sure to buy something else to make up the order to at least $300

You can combine tax invoice as long as from same ABN and 2 months of purchase.
So you can buy something else for $1 and still be eligible.

    • +4

      just buy 2 50c stamps.

      • +2

        No

      • +3

Almost certain stamps won't suffice for the TRS.

Stamps would be deemed a payment for service, which the scheme explicitly excludes.

        • stamp collection gift for someone overseas?

        • @yannyrjl:

Unless it's a specific stamp collection pack from Australia Post (which would be way over $1), you'd likely have some explaining to do taking 'uncancelled' stamps through TRS.

Best to be safe and look for something equal to or more than $1 that you can take on board, such as a USB stick, a pen, torch, etc.

        • Postage stamps are tangible goods that have a fv which can be used as payment for postage.

Unfranked stamps retains its fv until it’s franked. It can be traded at fv or at a market price.

      • +6

Wouldn’t it be more convenient buying 1x $1 stamp?

You know, have less to carry?

      • +1

Safer to buy something like a USB stick, and make sure you take it and the phone with you to the TRS desk at the airport.

  • Anyone know if this can be unlocked to use in another network (Aldimobile)?

    • +9

Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the assumption iPhone's are actually NOT locked to a network? Just sold under their provider?

    • +2

      They’re not locked, see here

      • Why is it an "Optus" phone in the title? (So I can definitely use it with my travel Sims?)

        • +2

Yes definitely, it comes with an Optus sim that's why it says Optus.

        • +2

I bought this same Optus pre-paid phone back in August (though I paid substantially more for it) and used it in Malaysia with a Malaysian sim-card in September without any problem. No need to get it unlocked.

    • I can confirm work with Telstra sim out of the box, Brought one today and didn't have to do anything.

      • Where did you buy it from? Victoria by any chance?

        • NSW. i rang 13 13 18 to find out what store has them, I had to drive 30km away to get mine,

        • @billyboy402: thanks. I did call them today on that number but for some reason they weren’t able to check which stores had them and that I had to go in to check (couldn’t even call in to certain stores as they had no phone numbers). I will try again tomorrow.

It’s not outdated. I have one. It’s great, still works really well!

    • +1

Are you on iOS 11 ?

      • +1

My SE is updated to 11.

        • +7

Ive stuck with iOS 10. Its plenty fast, battery last me two days. This is a fantastic phone at this price. Particularly if you are after something small, nothing comes close.

      • +1

I am using an iPhone SE 16GB for work and it's silky smooth on iOS 11.2.6. Never hangs despite the small capacity but I keep about 3GB free.

    • +24

I have one too, it's greeat!
It's unbelievable to me that people now seem to use the words old and shit as interchangeable - yes the phone was released a few years ago, no, it is not a steaming turd because of this, it is an incredibly powerful phone - you will be able to do all the facebook scrolling you want just the same as the overpriced iphone X.
My mac laptop is from 2011, it runs beautifully still and is used every day for the last 7 years.
My gaming pc is (mostly) from 2011 and again, rock solid, amazing performance, used every day since i built it, only had to replace gpu.

      • +8

The SE has performance benchmarks that stand up very well even to recent model devices.

      • +2

Agree fully. I sold an iPhone 8 to go to an SE after I realised how ridiculous it was to walk around with a $1000 phone in my pocket. I got he SE for $399 I think, and it’s perfect for my needs - fast, great screen, small but not too small and best of all I can use it without fear of wrecking it. While I’m working on my cars it’s jammed up under oily gearboxes taking pics, gets dropped constantly and used with dirty hands and just keeps on going.

        • +2

I sold an iPhone 8 to go to an SE after I realised how ridiculous it was to walk around with a $1000 phone in my pocket.

Certainly not dissing or hating on you, but was the only reason you 'downgraded' (or at least, downsized) the fact that you didn't want an expensive phone in your pocket?

          small but not too small

Haha I'm glad there is still a certain niche market that the SE appeals to. Personally I went from 4 to 5 inch and would now consider 5 inch the absolute minimum.

        • +8

@pennypincher98: Thats ok if you put in your handbag, but too big for pockets

        • -3

@asa79: 5.5" here, stop buying xxs pants and maybe you'll be able to fit your phone in your pocket

        • +1

@Droidyy: I dont need XXL pants

        • @pennypincher98:

That was the main reason yes, driven by what I put my phones through. I'm always at the beach, at the gym, under dirty cars and out hiking. So they have a hard life. So by trading down for a smaller, marginally less-powerful model, I didn't need to worry about flogging a $1k device. Also the X was coming out so I wanted to cash out before 8 prices dropped :P

        • @zfind:

I wanted to cash out before 8 prices dropped :P

          Haha fair enough :D
Not to be Android vs iOS in to this but shouldn't an iPhone 8 be able to handle all that? You might need a lifeproof/survivor case on if it's fragile and a screen protector (which you should have on anyway I reckon) but the rest of it should be up for the challenge?
Having said that if a phone $700 less does the same job in a smaller form I don't blame you for going to the SE.

      • -2

I tested it in multiple stores JB/OW etc but it's not as snappy

      • I think the problem is Apple has openly admitted they slow down the phone by design when you upgrade to a newer version of IOS. They say it is to save battery power, lol.

        Nevertheless very good price.

        • +3

No, they slow the phone when the battery has degraded to a certain point. An older phone with a good battery will not be throttled. And you'll be able to switch that off if you prefer in iOS 11.3 which will be released soon.

    • what version iOS can they run up to?

      • +2

same phone as 6s so probably 5 more yearly updates

        • +2

Short version: Assume 2.5 more years of support from now.

Long version: By "support", I'm assuming we mean it's supported in the current iOS version. It's not 5 years more. 5 years support from a model's release date is the general rule (e.g. iPhone 5 was released Sept 2012, could run the latest iOS until ~ Sept 2017 when iOS 11 was released, now stuck on old 10.3.3 iOS). The iPhone 6S was released Sept 2015, so expect support until Sept 2020. The iphone SE was released March 2016, so it may get support until March 2021… but as the 6S and the SE have very similar internals, and as iOS releases are synchronised to the iPhone releases, which generally happen around September, I think it will most likely that support will end Sept 2020, which is 2.5 years from now.

        • Longer than the 6s cos I believe it came out after the 6s. About half a year

        • @ThithLord: No it will not be longer than the 6S unfortunately. Specs are similar and Apple normally release iOS based on what they claim will be supported by the hardware. It will get updates up to the same as the 6S and then stop.

        • @j1568: I actually realised that after I sent the comment - same chipset. My bad!

        • @nickj: Look at the iphone 5s still on the current ios

      • +1

wow this is actually a very impressive phone for the price!
it runs iOS 11 and therefore can pair with an Apple Watch. I wish I knew that before I updated my iPhone 6 to the iPhone X. I like the retro iPhone look and at that price I wouldn't bother with a case or anything. I have to baby the iPhone X for it's price!

    • But you’ve seen a better deal?

    • +1

I have on too, great phone. I plan to get a cheap battery replacement in December from Apple to extend it’s usable life!

    • first in line 11 hours 43 min ago

It’s not outdated. I have one. It’s great, still works really well!

So does my $45 android phone.

    • +2

Furthermore, the 'outdated' iPhone SE will likely receive software updates in a more timely fashion and for a longer period than many a newly-released Android.

  • +8

    Outdated?!?!?!?!?!

  • What colours were available?

  • +5

It’s a current phone and still works like charm. Don’t know what the op is thinking about.

    • +1

release date march 2016. 2 years old. with internals from september 2015.
you can still buy an iphone 6s from apple, it doesnt mean its particularly current. you could say that it still works fine, which is a fair point. but in consumer time thats an eternity and should have made it much cheaper than it is. i would guess that apple still sells them not so much because they work fine, but because they figured that if they replaced old phones with new they would have to maintain a price point. but by keeping the old stuff around and barely lowering the price, new phone prices could then stack on top, higher and higher, with the illusion of affordability

i have an SE and it works decent enough, but its not current enough to have the price of a current phone

  • +14

this phone is basically a 6s in a 5 body

    • +1

True but the 6 (even the S) is quite a few years old now. It's a really good, capable phone but it is pretty old.

    • SoC is the same, unsure about the rest. Camera and touch ID is older on the SE.

      • Rear cameras are the same, SE has an older front facing camera.

        • front facing isnt that important unless you take alot of selfies

        • -1

@asa79: 30fps recording however is outdated these days.

        • @steveclassy2: If recording is that important you would be better getting a DSLR, gopro or something more suited

        • @asa79: 30fps 4k is still plenty for most people. I used the 1080p at 60fps for a few months to make slow mo videos.

Great what one can do with a phone these days to be honest

        • @adrianhughes1998: Personality I have no issues with 30fps, was stating as part of comment above, if they needed higher then a phone is probably not the best device to use

        • @asa79: not the best but still serviceable. If they don't know what they're doing though then higher frame rates doesn't count for Jack haha

        • @asa79: It's the most convenient to have of phones. Why would I carry a DSLR around when major phones are now adopting 60fps minimum recording. There's a noticeable difference !

        • @steveclassy2: Then you would be better off with a iPhone X/Samusung S9 or Pixel 2

        • @steveclassy2: 8mm celluloid film is outdated these day, I dont think 30fps is outdated, majority of cameras are 30fps.

if you feel 30fps is outdated? what is the latest benchmark?

        • @tonsta: 60

        • -1

@tonsta: If I'm paying $300 it should at least have 60fps that's all I'm saying. That should be the new standard and deflation will take it's course

  • +2

Not my personal choice - Xiaomi 4X note for me and the smaller 4X for wifey. Very happy with them.

My point though,is many (like her) don't want the bigger phones so this looks like a good deal to me for an iPhone.

    • wife likes this model, its the same as the iPhone 5 she destroyed by driving over it and no need to buy new accessories, double WIN.

  • +4

Anyone seen these in Perth Metro?

  • +4

What version of iOS is installed on these out of the box - out of interest for jailbreaking.

      • +4

Not if the interest is compound.

    • Mine's 11.2.6

      • +2

Sorry, missed out of the box.

    • +3

      It’s a great phone

    • +6

Brick in what way? To me the iPhone X is a brick (one with a stunning screen I must say). Too heavy and too large for my liking.

    • +1

Currently running an S8 - waiting to see if they release a SE2 in the coming months. Will be switching to this, not because of price, but

1 / Size is perfect, the S8 is too long, the screen curved around the edge is design over function and a PITA.
2 / Camera will be good enough (even SE camera enough for candid snaps)
      3 / Supports payments
4 / Supports finger print sensor
5 / Has great battery life
6 / And iOS can multitask.

I stuck with Android for 18 months but it is slowly killing me. I know a Pixel2 will be cleaner and better than the S8/S9 but Google still don't get it and I doubt they ever will

  • +2

Perfect price to claim on tax

  • Would this work in the USA?

I'm going on a long holiday there, and am looking specifically for a phone for the trip :)

    • +1

Yes but only with AT+T or T Mobile I believe. Or it may only be one of these…

    • +1

If it's unlocked it should with any carrier in the USA. When I was in the USA, my phone was unloccked (bought it from the Apple store) and worked fine with AT&T.

Would have gone with Verizon (because the locals there say it has the better coverage) but couldn't find a Verizon store at the mall I went to. So I went with AT&T instead.
