    Regular $179.

    Nice find OP!!
I'm checking my Big W tomorrow and reporting back.

  • is this different to the optus $41 ?

    • That's the J1 Mini $41 (RRP $139) @ Harvey Norman.

      • From what I could find they are the same but mini is a bit smaller/little less powerful?

  • Sufficient quantity?

    • I'm not sure, i don't know how to check other stores. I just found this at my local without a price tag so I'm guessing there will be others

  • I think there is a price glitch at Big W

    I just found this:

    https://www.bigw.com.au/product/samsung-galaxy-j1-2016-black…

    • +1

That one doesn’t appear to be locked so might be a different product.

  • +4
  • That's a super high-res photo.

    • +8

      Taken using brand new J1

  • how to unlock ?

    • It says $80 to unlock it from Telstra on their website

    • Flash it with a stock rom. Did it to my s7 to unlock it from virgin so I'm sure it would work on this.

    • Was about to ask the same thing

    • +1

Cheap (reputable) unlock codes on ebay?

    • I've had multiple (5-6) telstra phones unlocked in thenpast using ebay. Ovb check the seller, their rep etc but never had a problem.

Costs a few dollars, most I paid was $6ish but usually its like $2

  • Bleh… network locked?

  • Android 4.4.4?
Would flashing it with a custom rom remove the network lock?
sorry for silly question am bad with electronics

    • +1

Yup sure would, but as mentioned in another comment just flash it with an official rom. Easier and less issues with banking apps etc.

      • Don't know if the official roms have android 6+ though because gsmarena says it's 4.4.4
If I were to buy this I'd probably use it as a back-up/burner phone anyway so I'd be more likely to flash like lineage on it

    • How can a phone in 2018 still come with 4.4.4 installed?? That version is obsolete. Only 5.1.1 onwards are currently supported. Considering this phone first came out in 2015, it should have had 5.0 from the start as that version was around since late 2014.

    • +3

GSMArena says the J1 2016 comes with Android 5.1.1, no upgrade to Marshmallow. There's also no custom roms around for this phone on the XDA Developers Forums. Looks like root access is attainable if you want to remove bloatware, etc.

  • Can I use these with my Telstra plan or are they pre-paid only? (Also nanosim compatible?) Thx.

    • You should be able to use it with a plan. If SIM is too small, You can buy a prepaid SIM card and pop out the nano sim and put your sim card in the nano sim spot that you just popped out

      • Thanks v much :) Will see if I can find one tmrw.

    If you are after this, then also try purchasing a discounted $19 Woolies eGift card via CR. Total cost for you should be $18.05. If you can't find any in stock, then you can easily spend this on groceries at Woolies or any of the stores listed below;

Use them to purchase in-store or online at Woolworths Supermarkets, BIG W, Dan Murphy's, Cellarmasters, BWS, and Caltex Woolworths Petrol.

I don't think i can compare to your level of bargaining..

    • This is true ozbargain attitude.

    • Upvote for the effort of saving 95c :)

  • Anyone know if Google Pay works on this phone?

  • No NFC

    • What about notification led :p

Though it says yes NFC on Samsung site.

  • Is there any way to find out what stores have stock?

  • Did Joondalup have any more?

tbh you're better off buying something like a Xiaomi Redmi 4x. I own one and it's amazing, even if it was $400 i'd recommend it, but i got mine for $150 aud.

Edit: Phone is $19? wtf. Ignore above, $19 phone is pretty good.

    • +5

Haha love it! That moment you realised it was so bloody cheap ☺️

      • +2

You don't buy it because you need it, you buy it because its cheap.

        • Yep that's the spirit!

        • @Gomo:
The 4X is cheap for what it is… :-)

  • so the telstra one has nfc but optus mini doesnt?

    • Which is weird because even the Galaxy S3 has NFC.

  • +1

Big W Merrylands didn't have in stock. Got one from Bigw Auburn. I didn't ask how many were in stock. Make sure you mention that you are looking for the 2016 model and locked to telstra. Otherwise they will show you the newer unlocked model which is for $199. The store rep was himself surprised to see this one selling for $19!!

  • +1

    No stock at box hill.

  • Reminds me of https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/188098 but this runs Android so its at least somewhat useful as a backup phone.

    • I got the Lumia 530 for $10 for my grandmother on clearance at Woolworths.

I followed a tutorial to force update it to Windows 10 Monile and it’s workjng great. To be honest, better for her than an Android, fast and stable. She doesn’t need apps, it was more to have a larger display and keyboard than a cheap dumb phone.

She’s currently using it on Boost out in country NSW.

      • I actually googled "Windows 10 Monile" and was disappointed to discover it was just a typo…

  • +3

All stores in SA sold out as per salesperson from Cumberland SA .

  • +1

I'm pretty sure the $19 one would be the 2015 model while the $199 is the 2016. It's confusing though, because the $19 one has a picture of the newer model while the $199 picture is the older model.

    • +1

      Not sure if serious

      • oh rip i'm an idiot did not read the post properly .-.

        • Omg thanks now I don't feel so dumb now this morning ;)

  • +4

Cheap way to add to my security cam setup

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ivuu

  • Where are these located (instore)

    • Usually at the entertainment area/printing area either behind the counter glass or on display.

  • Anyone got the link for the $5 unlock?

  • Good deal if you're from Woop Woop

    • -3

      Woop Woop

      I saw her first😡

  • I went into Big W Hallett Cove and there was an unlocked J1, and a J1 locked to… (drum roll)… Optus! Also the phones were locked in display cabinets with no missing price tags, so they could not be scanned unless I asked a staff member to (and why would they need to when a price tag is right there?).

    • Are you sure it wasn't the J1 mini and that it was $19? I'll be honest I'm doubtful but happy to be proven wrong.

      • Not sure but the Telstra rack was all Telstra branded phones, no Samsungs.

  • +1

    Are these at Woolworths?

    • +1

Yeppers, they sure are Soup-Minj… just drop into ANY Woolies, and demand a Samsung Galaxy J1 2016 for $19. They will be glad to oblige.

      Happy trails.

      • How/why? My Big W was sold out and I really want one.

        • Which is your bigw that has no stock?

        • +1

          @yupyup: Brisbane CBD.

  • None at BIG W Melbourne QV. Felt like they must have sold out today since the guy knew immediately what one I was talking about.

  • None at Brisbane CBD. Apparently the deal has been running for a while.

  • +9

    Stock check for unicorn.

Set your postcode first on the home page.

    • Thank you - saved me some time and phone calls!

      • found any?

        • Unfortunately not.

    • +3

I can't get it to work and convinced it's leaking my data to Cambridge Analytica.

  • +1

Has anyone had luck with target price matching with a huge discount?
I have had them price match toys ect before but nothing like this as i noticed they have these at target

  • No stock at Big w Lavingston in wa. Guy told me this phone is not coming from last few months.

    • LOL of course it's not going to be restocked and if it was it certainly wouldn't be $19.

  • -7

Jesus, Big W. Phoned the Brisbane city store and some useless baby boomer picked up the phone in the technology area and had no idea what I was talking about. Nothing like slamming your head against a brick wall first thing in the morning

    • Way to go with he pointless intergenerational hate…

      • -5

I’m sorry that your wittle feelings got hurt. I suppose it is only Big W and having someone that actually knows phones working in the technology department would be too much to ask for.

        • Have a coffee then build a bridge

        • +3

          …and get over it.
No, my feelings didn't get hurt, what a dumb thing to say. I just think you are acting like an entitled jerk. Perhaps you described what you wanted so badly that it was not easy for the person to understand. You have to take people as you find them. Judging someone older for not instantly understanding what you wanted is ridiculous.

        • -5

@King Tightarse: lol, I can tell that you're the kind of person who has made facebook crap

        • @Joey Jo Jo:
Lol WTF? I hope the day improves for you. Sounds like you need a break
          Facebook, ha ha OK

        • -5

@King Tightarse: Your life will improve for you soon enough as you haven't got long to go LMAO

        • @Joey Jo Jo:
What makes you thing that? I am not a baby boomer. I just called you out for acting like a little entitled jerk to one.

        • -5

@King Tightarse: oh god are you still menstruating on my comment?

        • @Joey Jo Jo:
          Menstruating? What are you 8?
Who knows, maybe if you save up with all your might, you will be able to afford something a whole lot better than a mere $19 phone. Say a $20 phone or even a $25 phone, if things go well.
          Dream big.

        • -2

@King Tightarse: wow, move on with your life mate

        • -1

          @Joey Jo Jo:
Oh I see you put crap out there but can't take any back.
haha so not surprised. You have great day now.

        • -1

@King Tightarse: lol you just keep commenting after having a sook. There should be better things in your life than other peoples online comments Hahahaha

        • @Joey Jo Jo:
Believe me, I am not even slightly sooking. I am enjoying myself watching you squirm now you have run out of material :)
I'll stop now because its getting a bit stupid but really you have a made a mess of this thread with your foolish comments about facebook, menstruating and everything. I'd be embarrassed if I was you.
You have a great rest of day now:)

        • @King Tightarse: still going… lol
