Was waiting for this offer, got too excited with the Optus 20% discount, and then this comes out.

  • +2

    pity its not shareable data.

    • How does that work? I’m looking at a new planing soon and want to be able to share Telstra data.
What do I need to look for?

      • They got rid of it, there is nothing to look for anymore.

      • +1
      • I grabbed this deal a month ago & tacked on $5/mth eSIM (apple watch w/3mths free) & a $5/mth data only SIM. It's shared data for me.

  • +2

How do i take advantage of thia deal… never done it before, do i juat go in and mention it saying i want to switch over to telstra?

    • yep

    • +3

Even if you're with Telstra you can transfer your number to a Vodafone $2 sim in minutes and then transfer back to Telstra. I did it in the same shopping centre visit.

      • +2

They will remove the discount. You have to not be with telstra for an entire billing period. 30days.

        • -3

No they won't. Done it before as have plenty of others on OzB.

        • +1

          @Maz78
          NOPE
Wife went to JB after we had ported her to an Optus SIM, was told NO, you have to wait 30 days!

        • @Maz78: They will. It might take a month or it might take 12, but it will happen. Telstra uses a bot to go through accounts and make sure promotions are valid on them. Source: Ran a Telstra shop fro 7 years.

      • +1

I'm using Boost (Telstra reseller), will I still need to port to Vodafone etc?

        • I have a mate on Aldi thinking about doing the same

        • -1

No, I think you'll be right as it's seperate to Telstra.

At least that's how it worked with Amaysim and Optus.

        • Unless it has changed in the last 18 months. Boost uses Siebel and within the Telstra Ecosystem(Telstra staff can see it in the same palce as Telstra sercvices). When transitioning within their system it functions like a prepaid to post paid. So unless this has changed recently, Boost won't work unfortunately. source; Used to run a Telstra shop for 7 years.

      • Yup you will get the $200 gift card but lose the $10 discount

      • With $2 Vodafone SIM you need to activate it in Vodafone, i.e. pay more for a month of pre-paid, no?

      • I'm with belong and got told this as well :(

I guess I'll take the optus deal then.

      • $12 cost… cant activate a $2 Voda sim without adding credit anymore.. min recharge is $10

  • +2

    opt in

I think you mean port in or churn.

I was intrigued thinking I'd get a $200 gift card for simply signing up for some spam.

  • +3

@OP Any further details to the deal? (expiry, terms and conditions etc)

  • does porting to another carrier then back work for this?

    • Jb claim u have to be away for 30 days but not sure if policed:

      • It worked for us recently. JB HIFI said you need to wait one full billing cycle. But we churned to Aldimobile then went back to JB Hifi a few hours later. Went through just fine.

        • There's a robot that goes through accounts, we used to do it in the stores and people would lose their discounts and come back pissed.

        • +4

          @ONEMariachi:
Unless the robot is also going to come to your house and physically take the gift card off of you, this isn't much of a threat.

        • @Molloch:
I think you just lose the $10/month discount. It is a $49/month plan with a $10 discount - well that's what my bill shows.
You obviously still have the $200 gift card but will probably lose the $120 over the 12 months

        • @Molloch: haha, yeah not the giftcard, the $10/month credit is what I was referring to.

    • +1

I can confirm it worked for me coming from Telstra prepaid. Churned to Kogan, waited an hour and went down to know JBHifi and signed up. Got them to pricematch HN on the Nokia 7 Plus and ended up grabbing it for $350 using the $200 voucher. Easy as.

      • And is your plan now $39 or $49?

      • Out of interest, does Android Messages have RCS Chat enabled on the Nokia 7 Plus?

You should be able to see these options in the advanced options in the Android Messages app

Does anyone know how long this offer runs for?

    • This is effective from a long time. My friend did this 20days back. Add also dont mentions any expir of this.

  • +1

So if I pay $39*12= 468, I will get 12 month phone subscription for $39 plan plus $200 voucher from jb hifi???

    Sounds like a deal…

    • +1

Essentially making the plan ~$22.33 a month for 12 months - not bad for 20 GB but I still value the previous plans from Lebara more ($16.50 a month for 16 gb). Still, considering this is from Telstra, I think this is great for people who are craving data and doesn't require you to pay upfront like Lebara :)

      • +2

I got this from jb this morning, was on that lebara deal. Take it from me, I would pay more than double to be on telstra, lebara was hopeless with data, and I'm talking inner Melbourne

        • I am based in Sydney and have generally had 4G+ coverage. Telstra are definitely more reliable in other regions though.

What happened to your Lebara plan when you ported? Did it just cancel out your remaining months? My Lebara plan lasts until April 2019…I really hope another great Telstra deal comes out then..

        • +2

I was on Lebara for a year (now on Jenee, Optus network), and had no particular problems with their data (live in Melbourne CBD, work in Southbank). Telestra plans have always sucked for value, and given where I spend most of my time I've never needed to be on them, but Optus and Vodafone networks both seem fine around here.

        • +1

@knight321: mine was ending in couple of weeks so no big deal.

        • +2

@ely: Yeah I found that the new Oneplus 6 that I'm currently using is far more stable than my previous LG V20 with the reception, so the phone that you're using could also be a factor.

        • +1

I use Lebara in Melbourne and never have a single issue with it. Their service has been great.

    • How did you get $39 plan. Isn’t it $49???

I am currently on prepaid from last 2 months and it is good savings but restricting me in terms of data.

      • They add a $10 discount to the plan.

        • That means no need to call or chat with Telstra?

If this is the case, I will move to this plan.

    • The $200 gift card is off a phone, and they knock an extra $10 off he $49 plan. Not sure if nationwide, but the Marion store SA has the LG V30+ at $899, so with the voucher its only $699. Which i thought was a great price.

      • The gift card is just that. Can be used on a phone or anything else that j b sells

  • Will this be like the other deal where current Telstra customer can't apply?

    • +2

I don't think you can apply anyways as you need to port in from another provider.

      • +1

Seems easy enough too arrange if you really want to though; port out somewhere cheap then port back in.

        • Yeah someone said they ported over to TPG $10 plan for 5 days then ported into the Telstra JB deal and it worked, so give it a go and see but at your own discretion :)

        • +1

@knight321: Why wait five days? :D

        • +1

@ely: Aha - they were just trialling TPG and gave up. I don't see an issue with porting after the number is active as you have the right to do as you wish with the number ;)

        • +1

@knight321: do not port to TPG for this. TPG charge an $11 admin fee when you port out, it's in their terms and I'm also speaking from experience.
Just get a $2 Voda SIM, this is much cheaper.

  • +3

As i posted in the other telstra thread - just went and signed up for this after being on TPG (Vodaphone) network for 5 days after coming off Telechoice (telstra).

Talked to the guy about Jabra elite 65t which JB has for $300 and he discounted it to $210 which is cheaper than anywhere I can find online. New plan and $10 for a pair of excellent earphones. Good day.

    • Damn, I wanted the same deal - asked the guy and he said he could only do $258 (passed).

      • Ah that sucks. My guy seemed pretty chill. Try another store. I did it in Chadstone Melbourne

        • Thanks, Ill see how other stores go.

HN went down to $250 and JB offered $240. Getting there I guess :p

        • There we go, tried 3 other JB stores, 1 finally said yes to $210 after I said a guy online got it from Chaddy for 210$.

The others said their device wouldn't let them lower it under 257 (I wonder..)

          Thanks :)

          (Bourke street store)

        • @th123:

          Haha good persistence

  • +1

How do i obtain this deal?, any further details about the deal such as expiry date and any links to the deal?

    • +13

      walk into jb hifi

  • Anybody has recent experience where to port out to (Which carrier and plan) and then go to JB Hifi and sign up without waiting "30 days" ? I had read somewhere that many people were successful (last deal i believe) and worked next day?

    • +1

I legitimately churned over to TPG and was going to give them a go, but I gave up after 5 days and ported this arvo. So if you're desperate you can sign up to them on theri $10 plan.

      • Does this mean JB hifi doesnt police the 30 days cooling off period?

        • I should clarify, i churned from Telechoice (Telstra mvno) to TPG.

        • They wouldn't be able to. Telstra has a robot that filters through accounts. You could have the discount held there for a month and then lose it or be lucky and have it for a year until it finds your account, but it does happen.

        • @ONEMariachi:

          LOL a robot? Like R2D2?

You mean an automated search that could search Telstra’s entire database in 5 minutes? They either reject it the 1st month or they don’t. Sounds like no one has had an issue so far

        • You may still lose the $10/month discount as it is a $49/month plan

        • @opilot87: Telstra calls it a robot tool. I don't name it, they do. Fortunately for us, and if you understood their systems(I ran a store for 7 years). Their systems suck and it definitely takes more than 5 minutes to filter through the millions of accounts.

I've had people had it removed by their first bill, and I've had people come back several months later with it having been removed.

        • @ONEMariachi:

If you lose the discount after several months, do they make you pay back the discount that you received?

        • +1

@Riker88: Nah, they don't back charge. They just change it to the non discounted price.

        • @opilot87: R2D2 was a droid not a robot

      • I can confirm I churned back to TLS and get $10 porting credit every month as well as the JB Hifi giftcard of $200.

It is in the contract so I doubt they will yank it back from me after a few months.

    • A few weeks ago I was the deal where you could get $400 off the s9+ on a $49plan (after $10credit) plus $200 jb card at jb on a Friday so I went to Vodafone and ported to them. Went back to jb on Sunday to port over to telstra and was told after I had signed the contract that I couldn't get $400 off the phone or $10monthly credit and no $200 jb card because I was still inside the 30day window. It was lots f*ing around to just get my number back to Vodafone because the porting dept was not open on a Sunday.

  • Does Telstra allow early upgrades from a 12M SIM Plan up to a 24M phone plan like Optus?

  • +1

I cant actually find this deal listed anywhere on JB hi-fi's website, does anyone have a link to it?

  • +1

Just to add to this deal, when I did this the guy serving me mentioned that if you're willing to port over using this deal it's possible to sell you items at lower than cost price if they're nice enough.

    • +1

Care to elaborate what that means?

    • I have a feeling this has some truth. My guy at jb asked if I had any plans for the $200. I told him I was looking at jabra elite 65t but their price wasn't good @ 300 and I was expecting 240. He checks his jb phone and comes back offering $210. That's 30pc off! Cheaper than the US store price after conversion.

I'm sure they're still making some margin at 210 but still…

    • Yes, our salesperson also offered "staff prices" for whatever we were buying that day.

  • +1

Let's say you are on one of the Telstra MVNO prepaid. Can you actually get this deal or you have to port to another carrier? Anyone tried? Eg. Aldi

    • You sure can. I was on a Telstra MVNO and no issues at all.FYI Samsung S9 and S9+ have a 400$ discount instead of the gift card.

  • Can you port from Boost?

  • +1

Reminds me of the $200 OzBargain posted promo JB HiFi had in August 2014; $200 coupon for bringing in an old phone and buying a new one with them. Samsung had a $200 off promo at the same time for their phones. Coupons stacked = $400 what was then the newest Samsung Edge 6+ for $680ish. Fun times!

    • +2

Good times indeed. Still using mine

      • Same :)

    • It's a nice way to use the credit. I would save the gift card and use it when there's a good deal

  • does it work from telstra pre paid to postpaid

    • No

  • can that be in any way combined with a pixel deal?
