      Yes, it’s a legal requirement.

    • +1

Yes - and they’ll run a credit check, as required for Post Paid plans.

    • Yes - 100 points

    Got it done! Thanks OP!

  • Thanks OP. It's a pretty good deal, IMHO.

But now I remember why I was so frustrated with Telstra.

Their web support is useless. Still waiting for the registration email confirmation.

    • Hmm strange, we got ours within 24 hrs.
Hopefully doesn't take too much longer.

      • 24 hours is good?

I expected the email instantly (or at least within 5 min) - am I expecting too much?

  • -1

So much conflicting info here about whether existing Telstra customers can port their numbers away and then get this deal straight away. Can it be done? If so, will we lose the discount and/or the gift voucher? If not, will the deal still be around in 30 days for those us of who port our number away now?

    • According to the sales rep in JB Hi 5 the deal will not be around for another 30 days so you will not be able to port away and then come back in 30 days.

      • Can confirm, went in store today and was told it ends Thursday.
Also told that Telstra resellers such as boost aren't eligible.

FYI, you can combine multiple deals.

I now have Unlimited calls / texts, 20GB Data and "Peace of Mind" data after the data allowance for $39 per month.

NB: The $49/m BYO Plan is called "Companion Plan" and is available to people with a Broadband service or Post-Paid service with Telstra.

    • Sorry, where did the “Peace if Mind” data for the $49 BYO come from? On the link you provided, it’s only for the $69.

      • So this "Companion Plan" is not available on its own, as the usual $49 plan would not include that "Peace of Mind"? I forget I already have a service with Telstra as my uses that.

        • Correct, it is not available on its own.

However, if you have your broadband service or you want to port 2 or more numbers across, port the first number as the "regular" $39/m deal and any subsequent number as a companion plan to get the Peace of Mind data on these.

        • @Pielo: Does it have to be with a broadband service? If so, I can't take advantage of that.

        • +1

          @quarrymaster:

Fixed service (broadband) or post-paid mobile service.

Well it seems I can get the BYO Companion Plan, with the $10 discount, but not the $200 JB Gift Card… :(

Have I been given a bumsteer by my local JB? Should I try a different one?

      • Sign up with JB Hifi, get the gift card, then call Telstra and ask them to add the Peace of Mind data from the companion plan.

Its the same plan on their system, I have been told.

        • I’ve considered it. Ended up getting 10GB bonus instead of 5 to make it 25 so it’s not as big a deal. For now.

  • Crap I signed 12 months contract with Vodafone last month. For the same $40/month, though there is 10gb more data plus 500 minutes oversea phone call. I would prefer telstra plus $200 GC. T T

The last time I saw a jbhifi deal $200 gift card like this one I jumped on it because everyone thought it was a great bargain and I was none the wiser.

My understanding of why they give this is to entice you into a deal that sounds good now but in approximately 1-3 months, prices are going to drop or more gigs per buck and your going to be locked into a not so good deal for the remaining 9-7 month. Is that what you really want?

Even if one is to get 20gb or more data on this plan, the company telstra etc are on betting on the idea that you exceed your allowance and have designed plans so that you do.

If u end up spending more money over and above this offer for 12 months than the $200 credit on offer then I’d say it’s a bad deal.

The other thing is why do we need calls to mobile or calls to landline? Just get compatible phones or use apps like FaceTime. Why can’t we just use Data plan? Others would no other choice but to use data if they wish to communicate to you. Data only for all while being affordable for all!. Surely that might be better value for money and if your friend ain’t using FaceTime or the android equivalent, suggest that you both use it.

But if you know better then ignore what I say and go for it.

    That’s my thoughts, what’s yours?

      grapes are sour…

    • Na best deal was jb hi fi deal with phone then jumping on friends and family ended up also have 12 months foxtel now, and people who were quick also got $100 cashback from cashrewards

  • Sorry if this was mentioned elsewhere, does the $10 discount on the $49 offer end after the 12 months or continue when out of contract?

    • +2

It continues. Confirmed by JB rep yesterday.

      • The JB rep I had yesterday confirmed that you keep the deal until you renegotiate your contract, however on the phone to Telstra today they said after 12 months it reverts to $49/month and 15gb/month

  • +2

This offer ends on 31st August. I saw that on a printed staff information sheet about all current offers

  • +1

I went in yesterday to Jb Hifi Narellan, the offer was not anywhere to be seen but as soon as I asked the staff member in the phone section i was offered it. So i opted for the $49 plan with the 15gb +5gb plan which was discounted to $39 for porting over from another provide + the $200 jb hifi gift card. I did have to chat with Telstra today because I could only see 15gb on my account, after 5 mins i had this sorted and now i have the full 20gb

    • were you able to use the $200 today? does it have any expiry date and can it be used multiple times?

      • +1

You can use it immediately. I used mine towards my partners S9+.

      • +1

        No expiry date.

  • Amazing deal. I ported two numbers over and got 2x $200 vouchers today.

Going to put them towards the next iPhone whatever.

  • +1

Just called JB Adelaide - deal is on till 31/08. I'll be porting out of Telstra post-paid to Voda prepaid shortly and then going into the store later. Too late to wait the 30 days but the chance of losing the $10/month discount is worth it for me considering my current plan.

    • Successfully ported over to a $2 Vodafone prepaid sim. Off to JB I go!

      • All done! That was super simple… All within a span of just 2hrs. The JB staff were even telling me they were thinking of porting out and back in too.

        • JB staff I've spoken with at a couple of stores now made it too vague for me so I jumped on the cash rewards deal for ~$50 more (referring to note 9 I would have spent the credit on). Flexibility to pick a better contract when the time comes minus potential to lose the port in credit won out for me.

  • +1

Owsome!! I got this one yesterday at Castle hill JB-HI-FI at the very last minute. the staff was so wonderful and completed the transaction and even gave me the gift card on the same day $200

  • I ported out to Optus yesterday and tried today. The person in store checked the system and saw that I had ported out yesterday and said I couldn't do the deal :-(

sounds like some of you where able to do it ok.

Should I just try another store? Not sure if they would flag my number some how or not.

    • The same reason I didn't want to risk getting stuck!

It's definitely a hit and miss if you're trying to do it within less than 30 days.

Maybe wait a day or 2 and hit up a different store. Jb is hit and miss with A LOT of things, always depends who you get unfortunately. Hence my cautious approach.

I wanted a phone discount more than a plan upgrade so chose to give it a miss.

    • I’ve had a look at the systems at two JB stores today. The first one they pulled up my (wife’s) service to show how much data she used, and also our bill or billing history when you go to My Telstra or whatever.

The other store they were able to pull up my history with JB, dating back to the iPhone 4 and gaps in between.

Suffice to say if you just ported out, they’d know!

From what I can gather, even if someone got through, either they may lose the $10 credit down the track, or the JB rep might not get Telstra’s rebate.

      • Yeh that's right, and the gamble that people have taken in the past is no indication of a 'deal' as such. Just sheer luck. Hence why I steered clear.

If anyone was in the same boat as me and looking at the note 9, jump on the cash rewards deal, hard to beat in my eyes for effectively $50 more than this with no lock in contract. The way contracts are crashing, I'd expect a big change by the end of the year and my data is sufficient enough until then.

  • +1

I ended up trying a diff stores yesterday and received the deal. Will see if I keep the $10 discount all year or not.

  • +3

Porting failed and Telstra cancelled the order. They were not helpful. Ended up stuck with the $200 gift card

    • Crying all the way. LOL

    • Nice. The JB Hifi sales rep wont give me the $200 gift card until after my number was successfully ported over to Telstra. Had to wait around until porting had been confirmed.

      • After the port was confirmed, did they copy over your order and personal details to JB’s own system before issuing the gift card?

        • @xixia
Nope. I believe everything was done on a Telstra system. They were able to access my old Telstra account, saving time filling up my personal details.

  • Ported my wife's number across from Amaysim- $39/month, 20GB. Took around 40mins on the phone + waiting for confirmation.

Go home, check email confirmations- $49/month.

Telstra live chat say no discounts have been applied and need to go back to the store to sort it out.

    Messy.

  • Hmm my local says it's over 24 months. Where does it say 12 months?

    • I just had mine yesterday. The term is on the contract.

  • Was looking to do this in Saturday, when I can finally get into the store.
If deal is still on till 31/08…. hopefully no issues, closest store is 400+km away

  • I did mine yesterday at the Melbourne Central store. the staff called Sophie was so helpful. Number ported straight away, left with the $200 gift card within 20 mins.

  • Hi all.. Currently with woolworths. Will I count as a new customer porting as it uses Telstra Network?

    • @Libojr23
In my opinion yes, a Woolworths port-in mobile number should qualify.

  • Hi all, is anyone a multi telstra number holder, porting away and porting back with same. 2-3 days to take advantage of the $200 gift card ?

Do they still grant you the $10/month discount on the ported number - OR - because other numbers stayed on the account with Telstra your technically not a new "customer". Eg is it tied to the specific number or the account holder? or both ?

PS. I understand that Telstra might revert the $10/month later if their bot searches the records and its less than 30 days ported out of their system, thats not the question.

  • I went into the JB at Galeries Town Hall and they said this deal ends on the 2nd of September. I'll be switching from Virgin Mobile.

    • Be careful, I asked the same question at Galleries yesterday also. The lady said 31st August.

Suggest you do it by Friday just in case, you don't want to miss out of the deal for the sake of a couple of days.

      • Was told 31/08 too.
I missed out on the $400 off Samsung deslvexoired two days before I got to store.
Ended up taking the the gift card, hopefully might stack codes and gift card on a good deal soon

  • Ported from Telstra to Optus three weeks ago and tried to get the deal today. Knocked back because they could see my number was disconnected from Telstra recently :/ :/ :/

    • Was I with Telstra recently was the first question they asked me when I said I wanted to port in.

  • +1

Signed up this morning. Ported over instantaneously from Kogan. Only hiccup was the additional 5GB wasn't added automatically so the JB Staff had to add it manually, otherwise in and out within half an hour.

  • Is the deal still running or has it expired on 31 Aug?

    • +2

I went in on Friday afternoon and they said it didn't have an end date. It is a Telstra funded promo, so it will run until they (Tesltra) decide to finish it.

      • Thanks snuke - Gave them a call and said its still going on so going to head down today and sign up. Thanks for replying :)

    • Just left the store and was still available, the worker said the deal is renewed week to week for now

  • Just ported into Telstra with the $39 deal at Wetherill Park JB Hifi and got the gift cards. The staff said the deal will go on until Telstra email them to say it's finished.

  • Done today at Kotara NSW. The deal is definitely still going.
Ported my number from Aldi and the new sim was working within a few minutes.

  • +1

Switched to Telstra for two numera and got 2x$200 vouchers
    Plan $49-$10=$39 for 12 month
15+5gigs data, Peace of Mind data (this was added after chatting with Telstra)

I got the peace of mind as I am using Telstra broadband customer

    • Anyone got peace of mind without having additional existing service with Telstra? I tried on webchat and got denied a week ago but I'll try again if there's a possibility of getting it.

      • I hope having two services will work, but waiting to see if there's any good offers with pre-orders next week.

  • +2

If anyone is having problems getting the Piece of Mind data via Telstra chat, point them to this:

    https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/plans-and-rates/com…

I had a Telstra chat person insisting that the Piece of Mind add-on wasn't available on the $49 plans, and only available on higher plan tiers. He changed his tune pretty quickly after seeing the above page.

    • Thanks

      • No good, I had my second attempt getting pom added to my plan. They said that deal is for companion plan for existing customers :(

        • They are still advertising this deal in JB for new customers.

        • @snuke: Not for the 49 byo sold by jbhifi. I specially seeing on the contract that no piece of mind is included in the package. Thought it was worth trying to snag it on Telstra chat but to no avail.

  • -2

This deal gives me the shits to be honest. I contacted Telstra to try and get a better deal out of them… Same. Old. Story! Couldn't help and didn't want to help.

Currently paying an old promo of $40/10gb.

They offered $44/20gb (obviously more expensive than this deal).

Optus - $36/30gb - and don't even need to ask for it (Yes, I did also sign up under the free month deal).

They're a bloody disgrace. Reward new customers or big corps and leave you hanging if you're an existing customer. Blows my mind. They didn't have one ounce of care that I was going to leave.

    • I contacted Telstra to try and get a better deal out of them…

Just curious, how many times have you tried? It seems it’s always a bit of a crapshoot depending on the rep you get.

      • It was my 3rd attempt, 4th if you include attempts within the last month.

Even more if you include throughout the year.

Background - I'm normally VERY successful with remediation chats like this, I'd give myself a 90+ % success rate, Telstra being my most consistent failure/outlier among that. I finally caved and changed carrier.

optus with flybuy discount + 1 month free ~28$/month

      • that Flybuys offer expired yesterday

        • What a shame. Didn't notice that.

  • Ended yesterday

Thanks for the heads up, was about to port to vodaphone

      • +1

Dunno about that. Saw the $200 gift card with telstra port in sign at macquarie nsw store on Sunday.

        • Saw the $39 - 20GB - $200 gift @ indooroopilly on sunday too.

  • Not expired. Went in today. Just the plans have been updated (eg $45 instead of $39, but more data included). Still $200 gift cards. Also a $65/pm deal for 24mo offering a $500 phone credit towards any phone…
