Samsung Galaxy Note 9 512GB + 200GB Data for $84/Month with Optus @ Harvey Norman (Regional Areas/WA Only)

2100

Went into Harvey Norman to sign up for the $105 100GB lease plan with Optus (+20% off pm when porting from another carrier), and was told about an even better plan which isn't being publicly advertised.

$145 My Plan Plus @ $105
-20% for porting to Optus @ HN = $84/Month.
24 month (non-lease) contract
200GB/Month
6GB roaming.
Unlimited Calls/TXT overseas in Zone 1.
Total plan cost ~$2016 ($84x24).

I was told it was a 'regional' plan, but apparently all of WA is considered regional.
Seems to be running at this price for the entire month of August, and can be stacked with the 20% off deal when porting to Optus at Harvey Norman.

Seems like an amazing deal for the 512GB Galaxy Note 9 with an RRP of $1799 (once the free upgrade from 128GB expires), considering you get to keep the phone at the end of the contract. Or sell the phone outright and you have 200Gb/month for cheap.

Original 20% off deal at Harvey Norman: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/395908

EDIT: Seems that this HN 20% deal may have been extended until the 26th Aug, however keep in mind that the free upgrade from 128GB to 512GB will expire when the phone is released on the 24th

    nice one

    • I wonder if this also gets you the free Samsung EVO+ microSD card in the box?

  • +2

Managed to get the 100gb plan for $91 a month pretty stoked. would love to see if this is legit though

    • I believe it is, but targeted to those in 'regional' areas

  • +2

    Argh…

I want it for the huge ass battery, storage, and data…
But I need a wide angle camera #$&@#$&@

Maybe I can use this as a 'tablet'… Hmnm

    • How huge ass is the battery?

      • -4

        Google.

      • -1

        4000MaH

for comparison the iphone 6 is 2716MaH

        • +1

Huawei Mate 9 is also 4000mah, easily lasts all day.

        • -4

for comparison the HP Elite x3 has 4150 mAh and it was released in 2016. not sure how android phones can still be so far behind.

        • +2

for comparison the mi max 3 is 5500 mAh.

        • @Savas:

Easy…the Note7 fiasco forced Samsung to hold back on improving the capacity, so they instead focused on efficiency.

Overall the S7-S9 devices are 1.5 day battery life devices (depending on usage)…however, this lack of innovation from the leader has allowed all of the other OEMs to not compete as well.

The only one outside that norm seems to be Xiaomi (plus some niche Chinese devices) as even Huawei isn't much focussed on battery life (might change Q4 '18) since they've been struggling with their custom chipsets and custom software, where they're sort of draining power much faster than the competitors.

edit: Ah, forgot about the Razer Phone…great phone but the body is way too weak and the screen is sucking out so much battery that it's a shame. Also it lacks a headphone jack and IP68 waterproofing :(

        • -1

@Kangal: I don't understand your comment, the Note 7 exploded because of bad build quality. also the battery was only 3500 mAh.

    $145 My Plan Plus @ $105
-20% for porting to Optus @ HN = $84 per Month
-$84 minus 10% student discount via Optus chat = $75.6
    -$75.6*24 months = $1814.4
    -$1814.4 minus $1600 selling the Samsung Note = $214.4
    -$214.4/24months = $8.93
= $8.93 per month (5 cents per GB)

    Not bad OP!

    • Can they actually stack teh student discount with the 20%? Wouldn't of thought they could.

      • +1

When the 20% off started there were people in the comments successfully having it applied via Optus chat. I haven't heard anything since to say it has stopped working; perhaps it may depend how kind the rep is feeling.

        • +17

Lmao who'd buy a phone for 1600 bucks

        • @JuliusSeizure: I took $200 off RRP as an estimate, heaps of people are buying higher end phones for around that price.

        • +4

          @JuliusSeizure:

Do you honestly think Samsung would make a phone this expensive if they didn’t know there was a market for it? I agree, it’s insanely high, but I am not naive thinking people won’t buy it.

        • @JuliusSeizure:

For some $1600 is chump change.

        • @JuliusSeizure: everyone that bought an iphone X

      • More importantly, would they apply student discount without checking?

And if you buy it at HN can you use optus chat in that way?

    • +10

Who will pay $1600 while Samsung is selling on their website for $1499? and that not including the $74.95 cashback…

      • +2

Cash Rewards was 10% on this one so, $150 off, down to $1350

        • +2

And $125 off if you sign up for trading in a handset. You dont have to ;)

      • Keep in mind that it is only selling at this price currently for pre-orders (free upgrade from 128GB to 512GB for $1499).
Once this promotion is over, I believe the price will go up to $1799 for the 512GB version.

        • When will you get the phone?

        • +1

I was told that pickup would be from Harvey Norman from the 24th August, but would need to wait for confirmation from the store before collection.

        • @Rnewton4: ok cool.. going to HN cannington after work.

        • @carlJack: please do let me know how you go at Harvey Norman Cannington

        • +1

          @sonu1111: yep it works.

        • For whatever reason selling an android phone for $1799 likes a joke, whilst sub $500 one can get the job done like a charm. Also I am not a fan of $1000+ phones including iPhones.

        • @Minh Dang: Is selling a non android phone not a joke?

  • +1

    Wow this is nice

    • Read again.

    • +2

      It says non-lease

    • Comprehension.

    • -5

Well on the very first sentence 'Went into Harvey Norman to sign up for the $105 100GB lease plan with Optus'. OP can you kindly change this as its confusing?

      • +5

No, because the OP is describing what happened. They went in to get a lease plan, but was told about another deal which was non-lease (ie, own).

The OP hasn't made it hard to follow, seriously.

      • +1

You're a moron, OP doesn't need to Norton proof his post.

    • +2

vs 4x More memory (inc 512GB micro SD), 2x faster internet, 1.5x pixels, best screen tec, 1.5x battery, 2x more features, stylus, 2way USB C, better camera…???

      • -2

OP said deal was unadvertised. Deal posted in my link is for the same, and is regional only

      • -1

worse resell value says it all

  • +5

    Is blacktown NSW regional ?

  • I want it but I won't qualify :(

    • Why?

      • +2

Doesn't get more metro than where I live.

  • It says WA as regional try Perth's postcode it worked

  • Which Harvey norman was this OP? I’m in Perth too

    • +6

This was at the O'Connor store!

  • Damn, I signed up to the iPhone X deal a couple of weeks ago ;(

    • +2

You're own fault, You should never even look at apple phones

      • +13

        Your*

If you're going to make a snide comment, at least use correct grammar so you don't make yourself look like a twat. XD

        • Everything about his comment makes him look like a twat.

    • -2

      Haha idiot

  • Porting from Virgin counts?

    • I thought Virgin was being swallowed by Optus?

      • They are. Virgin customers are being offered deals to move across and sign a new contract with optus. If you don't sign up you'll ride your existing contract out at which point you'll need to move to someone else or optus.

    • Im with virgin and tried to get the 20% in Harvey Norman store and they said they couldn't port across from Optus resellers like Virgin unfortunatley…. maybe a different Harvey Norman would work, wondering if has anyone else had luck with this?

  • Can I hotspot the internet to our tv etc? Could cut our internet connection off for two years (we're light users.. 100gb/mo between us).. that would be a huge saving

I was under the impression that hotspotting to PC's etc got blocked

    • +1

You could add a mobile data sim on the same account and have the data shared automatically - https://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/mobile-broadband/dat…

It's got me tempted as I spend $160 on 4g mobile and a mobile plan now. This deal would bring is down to $104.

      • +1

If you resell the phone while it's still brand new you could bring that down a lot

      • The cheapest way that I can see currently is to add a 3GB mobile broadband plan which is $10 per month for 12 months (usually $20, discounted by $10 when adding to an existing service and signing up for 12 months)

Not sure if they do a data share SIM like Telstra used to do for $5/mo. Chat is not super helpful at the moment.

    • I have a 35gb Optus plan with no home internet. ABC iView, Stan, Netflix, Optus Sports and Spotify are all unmetered on Optus so I get by alright with this living on my own. But I also work in IT and annihilate the internet at work for personal use 😃

  • -1

I hope they have similar offers in 2 months when the new iPhones come out!

    • Doubt it. Resellers have low profit margins on iPhones as opposed to samsungs

      • Honestly, resellers don't have that much of a profit margin on Samsung now days either. Source: dealt with the invoicing for a major electronics retailer

  • +3

    https://offer.optus.com.au/hotoffers/?SID=REG:home:1up:1:jul…

You can check your postcode with the above link!

    • Awh come on Optus, you don't think Harrogate, SA is regional? We barely have indoor plumbing!

  • -5

200GB only works after midnight to 6am. What's the point of going with optus if it doesn't work when you need it to work

    • +2

      Where does it say that?

      • +1

I think sunnyc means the speed is bad all day and only usable at night because of less congestion

    • +5

200GB only works after midnight to 6am.

That's the peak download period for most men.

      • +1

You may not like it, but this is when the peak download time is.

  • This phone is overpriced. I gonna wait at least til end of year for anything else comes out

    • +1

For the last few year phone is overpriced

    • Wait for the black friday sales in November. Last year the note 8 went on special for the day and was less than $900

      • $978 for note 8 from harveys, plus two $100 amex offers brought it down to $778!

That is my best buy from OzBargain for sure.

  • Great value. But really don't need 200g per month.
Regional area ppl prob live on 4g internet at home ..Or good for people who have 6 kids and watches YouTube 24`7 to chew through that much data each month

    • +1

6 kids and watches YouTube 24`7 will kill the 200GB in a matter of hours ( consider they would have their own devices )

  • -5

People, Wait for the Asus Rog Phone

Awesome deal! I'm in Sydney, I've pre-ordered mine with Telstta on a XL lease plan (60gb) yesterday - $129 P/m + $10 insurance. Telstra plan is cheaper than my current Pixel 2 XL - I'm currently paying $149.

  • $145 My Plan Plus @ $105
    -20% for porting to Optus @ HN = $84/Month.

    A discount on a discount? Hmmmmmm……

  • That's the iPhone X plan I believe, unsure if they're meant to provide this phone on it…

  • how do they check whether you are a regional customer? the address on your DL?

  • So is the phone unlocked

  • I wonder if you can get this deal when switching from Optus prepaid? My post code shows I'm elegible for the deal.

Can someone confirm what the in store T & C's are?

  • How is Optus reception nowadays? I have been with Telstra for the past 6 years, before that about 10 years on Optus but always had to guess every second word as the reception was so bad anywhere outside central metro area…

  • My phone contract ended with Optus one month ago and I'm now with Kogan mobile, would I be eligible for this deal?

    • Pretty sure kogan is Vodafone so as long as you're Regional can't see why not…

  • -1

Does Optus even have coverage in regional areas?

    • +1

      Discount price for discount coverage.
