Made from genuine leather Amex Band is the easy way to pay in style. American Express has partnered with artisanal, fine leather-goods manufacturers Jean Rousseau and HIRSCH to produce sustainably sourced, genuine leather wristbands to make it even easier, and stylish, to shop and save at Vogue American Express Fashion's Night Out.

    Nice

    • +6

Except genuine leather is the second worst grade of leather. But hey at least it's free.

  • As with all Amex Cards your Amex Band has an expiry date. Your Amex Band will be automatically deactivated on expiry in 4 years after being issued. Amex Bands were issued to you free of charge as a one-time offer at Vogue American Express Fashion’s Night Out on either Friday 31st of August in Melbourne, or Thursday 6th of September in Sydney

I wonder how much it will retail for

    • I didn’t make it to the event. Can I still receive one?

If you missed the event unfortunately you will not be able to receive an Amex Band. The Amex Band was offered at the Vogue American Express Fashion’s Night Out only as a one-time offer.

      Its a one time offer

      • The Amex Wearable is provided for free. We do not manufacture the Amex Wearables. As such, we make no guarantee or warranty as to the quality of the Amex Wearable, its fitness for purpose or whether or not it meets any descriptions or promises made by us or our staff.

Hm that's a shame, I was hoping that this would be product for retail.

        • It probably will be. This could be a launch to get people talking about it before they launch something to everyone.

  • Has anyone figured out where the AMEX lounge in Melbourne is going to be? Theres no specific address I could find except this pic.

    • -1

Same place it was last year most likely

    • +1

Probably next to the Public Purse.

      • The gin stall is there - Amex is right outside Myer and DJ.

  • +6

Maybe we can meetup with scotty in Sydney @ 12pm, get our bands and a matching ozbargain T-shirt .
For those in Melbourne, maybe they can meetup with Neil

    • sounds like a plan

    • And a Not A Bot badge!

      • +2

I'm surprised you don't have it yet!

        • I've never been to an OzBargain meetup. But if the OzBargain meetup at the Sydney lounge happens at midday, I'll make an appearance :D

    • PM'ed to get details in Melb, how and where. Who's Neil! =)

      • +1

        Neil= ”The Moderator”

Screw those unfashionable people who live outside NSW/Vic

    • Like me? :S

  • +3

This band is totally redundant for people who have Apple Pay and an Apple Watch. I imagine there are similar things for Samsung and Google too. Just seems like sometime that’s bound to gather dust before it’s even used.

    • +1

Or for those who have multiple Amex cards. Or stupidly skinny wrists like me

    • I don't think they are redundant, they compliment existing payment methods.

Unlike phones and watches they do not go flat.

A band is easier to carry than a phone so is good for physical activity, gym, beach etc.

It isn't a target for theft like a phone or wallet/purse.

If you keep your phone and wallet/purse in a handbag or backpack you don't need to look through it at the checkout to pay.

They are also much cheaper than a phone or watch. The Westpac ones start at $5.

      • and there are many of us who waited for watch technology to get smart before the manufacturers gave up on the idea

    • I can see this being useful for non tech savy people aka seniors

    • -1

No problems, anyone with an Iphone and Apple watch can just ignore this thread, I am sure they wil be so happy looking at their watch they wont even notice this.

    • For those with AmEx cards with the contactless feature stuffed (yeah, my Explorer's contactless is busted), this would be awesome!
I've gotten tired of Insert+PIN (Chip) for small transactions, not to mention the longer approval time.
Of course this is a scenario faced by the vast minority so it'd be understandable having a different point of view.

      • +5

Why don't you ask them to send you a replacement card?

        • I've thought about it, but that means a new card number - it not so much the memorising the number that's the issue - I may have troubles having the Local Champion status transferred over etc, so I'm happy to live with the little inconvenience :)

        • +2

          @MathNerd:
Damaged cards do not get new numbers. They may have a new expiry/four digit code, but i've replaced damaged Amex QF Ultimate and Platinum Edge cards which were damaged, no number change.

        • @drewbles: Not my experience, I have replaced a few damaged Amex cards in the past 20 years and they always came with a new card number. Note I'm talking Amex issued cards here.

        • @MathNerd:

If you specifically all Amex they will send a card with the same number, expiry and security code.

You could also load the card into your mobile wallet so you can have contactless payments.

        • @bauser99: thats not the case with me, replaced a supplementary card and got a new card number.

      • +2

They will send you a new card for free.

    • And all the people that already have bands from the other banks for their cards.

  • What if we have more than 1 amex card?

    • +6

Bring multiple outfits (for multiple cards inc supplementary) with you as you exit and enter again

      • Fake mustache^
      • Fake beard^
      • Different style hats
      • Scarfe
      • Sunglasses
      • Santa Claus Costume

^If you have a beard or mustache, bring a razor/clipper and shave in the toilet

  • location please? google map points?

    • Pitt St Mall near Market Street

  • Do you get free drinks in this event? I went to the Vivid Amex event this year and no drinks were complimentary :(

    • In Sydney the AMEX lounge will have free drinks, also DJs will have plenty of free drinks with a shorter wait.

    • I attended the Melbourne event yesterday. One free Smirnoff drink per entrant (they give you 3 lil coupons when you first enter – one for a drink, one for some sushi, and one for a blue donut).

      • +2

At night, they ran out of the donuts and had macarons instead. There were also lollies as well. There were also a lot of free drinks nearby as part of this shopping event.

        • Interesting. Were they still allocating coupons to entrants? Did the coupon still say donut?

        • @zzap:
Yes, still coupons. Just the same ones, which still said donut.

  • What time does This night out starts? I'm planning to go to the melb one.
    Thanks!

    • Middayish. Some might start activations at 10 a.m.

    • any update on this?

      • If you read the above comment or the previous comments, I already said midday …

" It's an elegant, wearable way"

Not sure about that. Looked at the picture and it's not what I'd consider elegant (nor "stylish" nor the numerous other similar adjectives they throw around).

Just raising a neg to draw attention to two problems. This may be extra vulnerable to scanning theft.
2nd Some merchants have Paywave for other card types but Amex you have to swipe or insert (needs card)

    • +2

What? How? My Amex has contactless and I've also added it to Apple Pay. They clearly support the use of contactless.

    • +2

Same could be said for the actual cards itself, unless you use RFID blocking. Plus sometimes the contactless may not work for all cards and you'd need to insert anyway.

Not worthy of a neg in my opinion.

    • +1

Contactless acceptance is growing when it comes to older terminals - the Quest terminals are getting either replaced or a firmware update.

      • Yeah, such as at Priceline

        • +1

          BP, Haigh's Chocolates, etc :-)

        • @BeauGiles: I haven't tried tapping my card at those places, but I know Priceline for sure as I tried to pay with my Visa on my phone, knowing they don't do contactless Amex and it picked up my Amex instead and I was all ???????????

    • +2

Don't know about you but I 'paywaved' using my AMEX for most if not all of my purchases now; on my Android phone using Google Pay or using the card itself. It's rare for me to find a place that accepts AMEX but their EFTPOS terminal doesn't accept 'paywave' using the AMEX card. Not sure how or why that deserved a neg…

    • Like other people, most of my Amex purchases have been using Paywave.

I had problems with one merchant. I Paywave, it said I needed to insert. I insert, it said I needed to swipe. Then it was fine. This is something that you can't do with the band.

Another merchant, that was their set up. I could tap for Visa or Mastercard, but for Amex, I had to insert.

I thought it was worth drawing attention to, in case others have had that issue, and want to consider if the band really is a replacement for the card or not.

For those who have RFID blocking in their wallet, and probably don't think about it, it's just a reminder that the band won't have RFID blocking, being on your wrist.

It may be something to think about for anyone who normally uses RFID protection.

      • +2

Always keep an eye on your Statement and alert AMEX if fraudulent activity occurs, this should protect against the risk of any contactless payment scams.

  • on my left i have xiaomi mi band
on my right i will have amex band

good for people who doesnt have nfc on their phones (looking at you, xiaomi!)

    • +1

What about that payment ring from Bankwest, you got one of those?

      • im not banking with bankwest

  • does uniqlo sell gift cards in store?

    • I haven't seen any for sale but I may be wrong

  • +2

I was initially attracted to this offer but after thinking about it I have changed my mind.

The band expires after 4 years. I also don't really have any use for it. I could use my contactless card or my android phone with NFC to pay.

It can't be sold or given away as it would give access to my AMEX card so it has no value.

So…I'll leave it for people who really can use it.

Please don't just get it because it's free. Make sure you've got a need for it and use it.

    • +1

perfect for me, im using non nfc mobile phone at the moment and will soon get mi max 3 also without nfc.
i hope in 4 years i will be upgrading my phone to the one with nfc.

  • Oh 6 September I thought today…..

    • Today for Melbourne

  • +2

please people in melb, post FULL DETAILED review of the event - just regarding the smart band (opening time, how to get it, queue time, tips tricks, etc etc)

    • In front of the Myer windows, very easy to spot the marquee.

I doubt 1000 will last very long, especially if it's 500 each between Sydney and Melbourne.

About a half an hour wait (1min per person), but they're rearranging and having minor tech difficulties sometimes.

At this rate they might last till about EDIT: 4pm or longer.

Especially as they've split the entrance queue to optionally receive one, some people earlier seem to have got one not knowing or wanting lol.

Just got mine and the guy said they might run out (no timeframe)

Tip: walk behind the stand to check how much stock is remaining (WATCH FOR TRAMS), then join the queue.

Queue is anywhere between 15-30 people as of 1:45pm

  • +1

I'm in the queue right now guys
    Lined up at 11.45am
    20th-ish in queue
There's a few booth things so make sure you're in the right line!!

    • +1

There's a bunch of people in the line who
Don't know what they're lining up for
Don't have an Amex and just want access to the lounge

      • haha classic get in first ask later. you can be ozb representative and educate people on the line

        • +1

          Nah celebs
Don't go for a band if you don't have an Amex issued card!!!

  • +1

Qantas AMEX Ultimate card doesn't get you the wrist band, unfortunately. A little annoyed because they did not mention on the website what cards are eligible and which are not.

There's a free roll of sushi, a glass of alcoholic drink, and a donut.

    • do you think my white card amex essential (free annual fees) will get me a band?

      • Not entirely sure, but would think the rule of thumb is any cards issued and branded by AMEX instead of their partners like David Jone or Qantas.

      • Yes it would

  • +1

I got my band in the entry queue, but there also seemed to be a booth inside that was issuing them.

    • Not really paying attention, but I think the staff are saying the booth inside is no longer issuing them (the booth seems to be moving to the entry queue now to handle the line of about 30 people).

  • I cbf waiting in line in the cold for that stuff

    • It's not that cold, considering taking my jacket off!

      • It is if you are sick and it was during my lunch break, Im sure I can go later what was there some free sushi and a donut? Was the line stacked with non amex people?

        • +1

Nha all Amex holders, much faster line now, two staff banding at the front.

        • @Lukian: I'm back at my desk lol will be finished when I leave the office for the day I'm sure

        • No Amex, no entry to the lounge. Amex card must be produced before entry. I lined up at around 12.10 and that must have been peak time with the line being about 100 people. Went past around at 2.30 and the line was only about 15 people and bands were still available. I should have lined up later, but it was hard to tell when 1,000 bands would run out. I saw some people getting a band for each of their Amex(!), but also many people didn't want one, didn't bother or couldn't as they didn't have an Amex issued Amex.

  • +4

PS. The bands are ridiculously long and seem to require a double wrap to fit. Likely won't fit some. Probably why it's free. Double wrapped, it's uncomfortable for me on the third hole, but okay on the second. I have a reasonably small wrist for a male.

The NFC antenna likely doesn't run the length of the band (refer to: Bankwest ring), so the band has to be tapped in a very specific spot (under the Amex logo) - will test more later. (On the upside this means you can remove the chip and implant it in your skin or other device?)

    Bonus info:

    • Printed on the back - American Express & handmade in France.
    • AMEX etched into the metal clasp.
    • double band keeper loops if you somehow manage to have a small wrist.
    • Works (quick test at Woolies which I consider "strong" NFC terminals).
    • I have small wrists and the band don't seem too long to me.

Not sure about this double wrap stuff. I have it on the third hole (there are 5 more to the end of the strap) and there's about 4 - 5 cm of strap and two strap loops to hold it nicely in place. No complaints from me.

    • handmade? really!!!

    • I was given the choice of a single or double wrap band. I'm not sure if they ran out of single bands eventually or just did not give you the choice?

I chose double wrap as it reminds me more of the Hermes double strap, but double wrap might also appear feminine as well?

Note to receive the band, you must produce photo ID and it must be an Amex issued Amex. I.e. bank issued Amex cards not accepted.

      • Hmm, now that you mention it there were two on display, but they didn't offer the choice. Likely you could ask. Maybe they're sizing people by eye.

      • Someone said their Qantas Amex which is issued by Amex was ineligble for the Amex band
