Free 3m HDMI v1.4 Cable from Kogan to Purchasers of a HDTV from JB Hi-Fi in 2011

79

Never content with sitting idly on his hands, Ruslan Kogan is again making waves in the Australian retailer kiddie pool by offering a free 3 metre HDMI cable to any JB Hifi Customer who purchased an HDTV this year.
source

It appears that this is free with no delivery charges. Yes, it's another excercise in Kogan's anti JB PR campaign but at least there is something free coming out of it.

Kogan thinks it's ridiculous that JB charge $199 for an HDMI cable that is virtually the same as their $3 cable. Discussion on the BS of HDMI cables, here, here and here.

    makin waves riiight ;)

it's a bit…..insensitive to use those terms at the moment :(

sorry Japan, hope you guys get better soon :)

      • +1

It's a bit precious to infer any kind of insensitivity or direct correlation between a HDMI cable giveaway and natural disasters a whole hemisphere away.

        • what the hell?!?!

They are still finding bodies and Kogan makes jokes about it 'making waves'…
I call that bullsh@t and he could have used far better words…

          not precious, just being realistic

        • that would be the gizmodo writer….. not Kogan

        • It wasn't Kogan who said "making waves", it was Nick Broughall from Gizmodo. I doubt it was his intention to make any connection to Japan especially as they have been covering it quite well from a technical standpoint. It's a common phrase.

"The Promoter collects personal information in order to conduct the offer and may, for this purpose, disclose such information to third parties, including but not limited to agents, contractors, service providers, offer suppliers and as required, to Australian regulatory authorities."

    no thanks

    • Isn't it say that the details are only collected in order to conduct the offer?

      • "The Promoter may, for an indefinite period, unless otherwise advised, use the information for promotional, marketing, publicity, research and profiling purposes, including sending electronic messages or telephoning the claimant."

        This is the kicker.

  • Considering the going rate for hdmi cables is $3-$5 it is not worth doing, Nice gesture though

    • -1

why? is it that much effort to scan and send an email ?

      • +1

yes for some, for me its the handing over of private information that i dont like, and the ensuing spam

  • what's kogans advantage here?

is this a partnership with JB? or are they trying to encourage people to buy big ticket items from major stores, and get their small ticket stuff from kogan? or is it simply an exercise in self promotion and information gathering?

    • I would say they are trying to generate goodwill on a PR campaign. And collecting details. Dont be surprised to have your post box bombarded with junk mail (even though they only state they can email/call, isn't that bad enough?)

Pay the $3 and go to dealextreme instead.

Edit: Actually, I've negged it on this basis. I'm of the opinion that your personal details are worth much more than $3, making this a non-deal.

      • +1

He also gets very valuable pricing info from JB - he knows exactly how far each store was prepared to negotiate down to on each model, and for each payment method (cash/credit). Plus, there's considerable good will being generated.

Even if Kogan doesn't sell your details on, it's still a brilliant move on their part.

        • This is effectively providing Kogan with details of the price elasticity of the main competition, as well as providing them your details so they can spam you to infinity. Kogan should be giving the freebies to their own customers for giving them business. But they aren't, and it's because they have this ulterior motive.

Although at face value, this seems like a good "deal", I think it's far from it. They are effectively bribing people for this info, in exchange for $3 product that probably cost them 50cent.

  • Actually there is a difference in cable quality for digital cables. I used to believe "digital is digital", but if you are running long lengths of cable, you can get differences such as green shimmering fuzz with worse built cables. To all those naysayers, no I'm not stupid. But, day-to-day, most people will never run a cable long enough to see this occur. Anyway, for lengths greater than 25m you're going to need a signal amplifier anyway, so there's still limitations.

Having said that, I will bet the JB cables are no better than $3 cables.

Pretty sure they JB sells a number of cables cheaper than $199 tho ;)

    • the advantage is exposure and he gets to sell your information to third parties

    • $48.00 was the lowest price i find on the website then $69.00 etc

      http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/support.aspx?q=hdmi+cable&sou…

    • On shorter cable runs at least, what is most important is having the correct HDMI cable & connector wiring specification for your particular devices, appliances or applications.

      HDMI 1.0 specification
      HDMI 1.3 (etc) specification
      HDMI 1.4 specification

Using a HDMI 1.0 spec cable with a device, etc that requires a HDMI 1.4 spec will always end in tears of disappointment, sadness, frustration or rage or any permutation thereof. (Been there, done that!)

A $3 HDMI cable which is both mechanically well constructed, and correctly wired to the appropriate spec can not provide a lower quality result than the same thing costing $300.

Of course, as justtoreply rightly says, unusually long cable runs will need some sort of signal amplification.

its a nice gesture and a good offer but its not going to sway me to buy a kogan tv.

    • MB IF THEY CHUCKED IN A FREE PS3 OR XBOX

  • -4

Kogan TV… No way. False advertising. Their so called 120Hz support is a joke. They cannot even support 60Hz properly. HDMI Auto is implemented wrongly. PC input is also a joke.

And, the TV remote interferes with so many devices…

Buy another junk TV to get an "free" HDMI cable? No Thanks.

    • +3

You buy or rather have bought the tv from JB Hi Fi, not Kogan.

      • Don't want any Kogan product. Even if it is free.

        • you don't have to accept their offer, it's optional…

        • That's why I have not -ve the deal.

My friend bought a cheap HDMI cable that was faulty. Took him ages to figure out it was the cable which was the root cause of his sound issues.

Also, even though HDMI is digital. I have seen with my own eyes that some cables do not display 1080p properly when using PC HDMI out.

It's free so I will not -ve it.. but Kogan products.. stay away.

        • My friend bought a cheap HDMI cable that was faulty.

you can get expensive HDMI cables that are faulty too…

  • Agreed neil, read before comment.

    • I was agreeing to the previous comment about Kogan TV.
Kogan obviously don't really understand HDMI so I wouldn't bother with their HDMI cable.

Best of luck with people getting the "FREE" HDMI cable.

Their $3 cable is the same as the more expensive one? Well, just like their TVs are as good as Samsung TVs? They claim to use Samsung panels… but they are more like Samsung rejects.

I have many HDMI cables… There are differences. I wouldn't spend $199 on an HDMI cable, but some of these unshielded cheapy cables are not good.

  • Kogan 3m "Gold Plated" HDMI cable — $3.

    Add delivery to Sydney — $5.70. Total = $8.70.

And you can find cheaper ones on eBay, posted from Australia. Or even cheaper ones posted from China or Hong Kong. So maybe I should buy those since Ruslan said there's no difference!*Which I think, is false anyway. Digital is digital — yes. But the construction of the cable can differ quite a lot which affects the quality and reliability of the product. Not saying JB should charge an arm + leg for those though.

  • Agree, not a bargain by any means.

  • I don't understand… why isolate JB Hi-Fi when all the other major retailers are equally as guilty? Harveys, Myer, DJ….

  • There are differences in cables. Just think about CAT4, CAT5, CAT5e and CAT6. Network cables… digital signals.

Even simpler example.. cheap 5M USB cable will struggle to properly power a portable USB hard drive.

Cheap HDMI cable is almost certainly unshielded. Short distance probably okay. Kogan claiming there is no difference is just another example of how little they know about HDMI.

    • its a myth.. 6$ cable from reputable cable business will most def be same quality and have samefeatures as 40$ cables sold at jbhifi etc. Yet to be convinced otherwise!!

  • +1

Kogan are just trying to generate publicity by attempting to get JB to bite (like HN did).

They failed to generate publicity with the stupid attempt at million dollar bet so they've trying something else. Stupid behaviour if you ask me as it puts me right off buying any of their products.

Neg from me it's an attempt to get themselves on Today Tonight and A Current Affair yet again by targeting another retailer.

  • Not a bargain, we should help Kogan flame reputable retailers while he sells inferior generic products with "Kogan" slapped on it.

  • There are several things that Kogan get from this
    1) Your details for marketing purposes
    2) He has a beef with JB Hi Fi.. By giving away free HDMI cables he is cutting into their profit margin.. There is a HUGE markup on HMDI cables and surge protectors which JB try and push with every TV sale

On a personal note i wouldn't touch a kogan product now based on what i've seen from this prat

  • I'm sick of Kogan attempting to get free advertising all the time- it's really off putting.

  • +2

    Hmmm…….
whilst I am definitely no Kogan lover, it's interesting that many are whining and negging about their details being taken and used, when the second most + voted bargain to date was for a free mug (460).
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/25589

    4th most +ve voted (300) free scales
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/15456

Everyone gave their details quite happily.

    my 2c…
    1. It's free (if you are eligible), of course there will be strings attached….there always is - there's no such thing as a free lunch. I assume people, especially ozbargainers, are not that naive.
    2. (and this is the big one), It's not compulsory….. if you don't want it…. don't get it

  • Hands up the people who actually buys Kogan rubbish?

Hands up the people who will buy a Kogan product in the future if you get a free $3 cable

  • Jeepers…. a moderator banned from posting deals for 5 days?………. and every single neg given was an inappropriate one…

    Who'd have thought….. ;)

    • +2

Well, it was going to be posted by someone. Happy to take the grenade for OzBargain. Maybe Ruslan will throw me some pity HDMI cables. Even Scotty got hammered today.

Hopefully, those who bought from JB this year have profited from this deal. Remember, you can use a disposable email address if you are worried about SPAM.

      • Ha. Even moderators are human too. Our job is keeping the community sane and moderated, and not necessarily some bargain hunting deity ourselves :P

But thanks to Neil. Bought a TV from JB Hi-Fi earlier this year (from this deal) and will be asking for a free cable from Kogan.
