Get a $2 Telstra SIM, port the number to Telstra. Then wait another 24 hours before porting to this Optus plan.

    • That's terrible! I just got this SIM (and paid $180 for the privilege) and they tell me I can't keep my number. This is deceptive marketing!

    • Was it a Coles Plan or Optus Plan they put you on instead and which one please?

      • Optus, not sure exact details as currently on free month for all the trouble, then it'll go another 12 months of automatic recharges (hopefully).

  • +3

Why don't Kogan just do another yearly 50% sale again. I think most ozbargain Kogan plan will expire around march. Feel like I should hold out on this and hope Kogan does another one

    • Didn’t they have one last month?

      • Nah that was price error

    • I am waiting too, expiring next month. Kogan rep hear our requests for a mobile deal

      • They will likely send you a discounted offer when you get close to renewal.

        • Didn't get much discounted.
10 days ago, on the day my Kogan plan was finishing ported to CatchConnect on their 50% off deal.
          Porting took less than 10min

    • Mine expires I think around 4/20.. Yeah

So I am just gonna wait for another Kogan.. Kogan don't do excessive data charges or bill shock afaik.. you can't add extra bills to yourself unless you buy data packs.. that is enough peace of mind for me to stay with Kogan.. also higher chance of voucher.. I have never seen or heard of an Optus voucher.

    • I'm on the same boat. We have 4 services with Kogan (2 x BOGOF deal) expiring April!

Come on Kogan, do another BOGOF deal!

  • Something to take note of from the CIS …
"To keep your service active you need to recharge 186 days from your credit expiry, otherwise you may require a new SIM card to use the service and you may not be able to continue using your mobile number."
I take it you could (hopefully) still port out before the credit expires without losing your number.

    • +1

Sounds like standard with most prepaid services. I have those on Telstra 24/7 and takes at least 6 months for it to disappear after it’s expired and not recharged.

    • +2

You misreading it. It isn't well written though. They mean you have 186 days after your credit expires.

      • ahh, thanks for point that out .. now makes sense! The wording did throw me

  • With number porting, does it have to be done when you sign up, or can you port later on while your using the new number/plan?

    • +1

When you sign up, but that's due to limitation of Telco's processes.

      • Thanks

  • With the previous deal, I asked in store, and they said it was for new numbers only, ie you can not keep your old number.
Is this the same, or can you keep your old number?

    • You can port any number as long as it’s not Optus prepaid number. In that case just port out to another network then port in when activating this plan

      • Thank you. In my case, it is an Optus POST-paid number. Think that'd work ok?

        • Optus allows it, according to the link. However, whether they can do it to the SIM you purchased is something you need to ask him.
          https://www.optus.com.au/shop/support/answer/switch-your-mob…

If you navigate through the links, you could chat to them online and find out. Alternatively, port it to Telstra - use this free Telstra SIM deal. Once ported, wait 24 hours, then port to Optus Prepaid. You cannot port a number twice within 24 hours.

          • @netsurfer: OK I can confirm that Optus will NOT offer this price to current Optus post-paid customers. I had a long chat with an agent via the Optus app, and after he had a word with his supervisor, he confirmed that they would not be able to offer this plan for $120, but they would do it for $180. When I asked if i was porting from another service provider, would they offer it for $120, he said that they would.

Additionally, be careful because the guy actually put the change request through to switch my service to pre-paid before we had agreed terms. Now he has had to submit a request to the back end team to cancel the order and put the service back on the old plan. I'm sure that this will cause me a headache somehow.

Any suggestions for the best way to port out and in quickly?

            • @AlexG: Thanks. I have a Telstra sim lying around I’ll port my dad over to from Optus (he’s on postpaid) , not sure how long hat takes but once it’s done I’ll pick one of these starter packs up and port him back to Optus

            • @AlexG: Try another agent, I did and was told this:
Visitor (17:06:20 AEST) : 'you can'? so to confirm I can purchase the above offer as a starter kit with new sim but port my existing number from an Optus post paid plan because I am now out of contract
Reni (17:07:11 AEST) : Yes, you can buy that and do a sim replacement as to have the same number or you can activate the sim with new number.

              • @SiberianHamster: Interesting. I will try webchat, since the chat in app was a definite no. I even got put onto supervisor, who said no also.

                • @AlexG: they can all twist the rules to get/keep your business. keep trying til you get the answer you want ;)

                  • @SiberianHamster: ALEXG: I know someone else that switched from a postpaid plan to the Epic Value 365 day 60GB plan for $120,
so it is possible. If i cannot do this, then i will be switching providers this afternoon, as there is better value elsewhere.

Brett(OPTUS), Yes, but you would need to recharge for $180
33% off will not be applied
                    As it was a recontact

                    • @AlexG: The transaction is for $120 - a discount on the normal $180, 33% is already applied just to buy the stater kit 'precharged'. So all they do is port your number to the new SIM. If they don't do it, I have the transcript to say they will - otherwise refund. It's a pain, but keep trying different agents til you get it in writing…

                      • @SiberianHamster: I think you will be disappointed. My experince has been a disaster. Now the phone is not working at all. They are firm, and will not do it for $120. i gave up, and am going to pay $180 to recharge it.

                        • +1

@AlexG: Honestly, if you must go through Optus CSR, then not getting any discount isn't unexpected. Some of them just don't know their system well enough.

With the Telstra free SIM deal, you can port to Telstra, wait 24 hours, then port to Optus Prepaid.

Alternatively, you could try an Optus store, I found Optus stores tend to have at least 1 staff who knows their system properly and can help you. Though, if it were up to me, I would do the port to Telstra and then Optus prepaid route - less fuss and less chance to need to deal with a clueless Optus CSR - and if the CSR stuffed up, you could end up with a Prepaid SIM with a new number.

I would like to add that i had the same result as @SiberianHamster

basically, the operator switch me from postpaid to prepaid epic value.
She then said to call optus to activate the kit once i receive it.
They will activate it via sim replacement

i took 2 tries. the first operator said something similar along the line that 120$ is for new number
and if i wanted to keep my number i'll be charged 180$.

I'll report back once i successfully port into the deal with my existing number.

@sakewasabi: just a quick update. Received by package today.

Manage to activate via sim replacement. Everything took about 10mins on the phone :)

Hope this help with others trying to get the deal instore.

            Recap
            I was with optus postpaid.
            Moved to optus prepaid.
Once i received my new simcard, called 133937 and told them to activate it via sim replacement.
All done in 10mins via phone

            • @sakewasabi: Thanks for update, I'm yet to activate SIM but this is reassuring. Via phone seems like a better option than online agents.

              • +1

@SiberianHamster: just make sure you have your current sim still active and able to receive sms.

she had to send me a link via sms where I have to accept that they are doing a sim replacement.

After that, i was told to switch off my phone and have my new sim inserted.

Once she has done everything on her side, she then ask me to turn on my phone.
                and viola.. all done :)

Hope you will have a smooth transition like i did.

                • @sakewasabi: Same as your situation, seems sim replacement is a good idea, just wandering does it must be done through the phone or just can be done in my account online. And the credit in new sim will be kept definitely after sim replacement?

      • I have an existing optus prepaid number. Which other network can I port to for free?

        • +1

Tel$tra - free Telstra SIM deal was posted recently. It is still available. So, get it free.
Reminder: you can only port the number to a different provider once within 24 hours. So, once you successfully ported your number to Telstra, you need to wait 24 hours before porting it back to Optus.

Telstra's online system can be a bit buggy sometimes so if you are a Tel$tra customer and during the activation process you decided to login to link the Tel$tra SIM to your Tel$tra account, the system may error out towards the end despite you entered all the correct details for your Optus SIM and DOB. In that case, you will need to call Tel$tra customer service to activate and port the number.

      • What if it’s an Optus postpaid number? Looking st getting this for my dad but he’s on an Optus plan, out of contract. Don’t want to buy it and have issues

  • Welp, guess I'm back with Optus :')

  • I thought plan will carry on $120 when you recharge it come expiry. Or does that get replaced whatever is on offer when 365 days is up?

    • You can select from any of the recharge options at the end of the 365 days. I figured the market could be different in a year and I can handle the hassle of changing providers once a year for a significant saving/better value.

    • It might carry on at $180. This deal is pay $120 for a SIM with $180 recharge value.

The reason I indicated might is because other telcos have changed their really old prepaid plans' terms and conditions. For example, Telstra removed the use of Google Play carrier billing for prepaid plans recently. They did it in phases (started with long life plans).

      • It's prepaid, there's no "carry on" for special offers, you'll be able to select from whatever prepaid options are available as per usual. The $2 days are great for a secondary phone if you only use it once a week or for 2fa or alt account confirmation/recovery etc. Hugely worth activating a $2 day if you leave your main phone at a friend's house or a particular network is acting up etc. Also great if you need a data boost if your home net goes down and you don't have much data left on your main etc. Or great to let the kids borrow for sleep overs etc. Keeping a twodollarie around is a pretty nifty quality of life boost. Alternatively, if none of the prepaid options suit you, port the number, or leave it in a drawer and forget about it at no extra cost, haha.

        • If you go through the whole chain of discussion (starting from dingdong3000's original question), you would realise the context is about whether the same deal can be obtained 12 months from now.

Thus, his question is more about what will happen to Epic Value $180 in a year's time. No one actually knows. Also, people interested in this plan are after 5GB / month and if you read other discussions, you would notice most people really care about the number they are porting / moving towards this plan - which suggests they are moving their primary number across.

$2/day plan for casual use isn't good (I tried it) - I forgot to turn it off a few times (and even if you just want it to receive phone calls and zero data on the day - it is still $2). It is only useful if you have sudden burst of data usage need and 500MB on that day is enough. Or, you use 500MB data every day. Otherwise, it is a pretty dumb plan. It might be tempting to sign up for the $2 / day plan when Optus offer $10 for a $30 SIM, but that's because most of the other $30 SIM plans are pretty bad. Most prepaid plans are bad. The Epic Value $180 @ $120 seems pretty decent (33 cents, 166MB a day).

@netsurfer: If you read my comment (starting from the first sentence), you would realise that is exactly what I was talking about.

            • @jenna12: What was the point replying to me? Did I ask anything regarding prepaid? Also, if you read my first sentence, you would know I was indicating that if someone recharged $180 before the expiry, Optus may continue to allow that person to stay on the plan. I've been on Telstra and Optus prepaid plans before. Even after those plans stopped being offered to new customers, Telstra and Optus allowed me to continue on with those plans (obviously I had to recharge regularly).

You don't know the answer to the question he was asking anyway. The fact is, you don't know whether Optus will offer the $2/day plan in 12 months' time.

Next time, reply to the correct comment please.

              • -1

@netsurfer: "you don't know whether Optus will offer the $2/day plan in 12 months' time"… Again, please refer to the first sentence of my comment. You're now agreeing with my statement yet remain hostile. Read the very first thing I stated.

                • @jenna12: Stop replying to me. I didn't ask any question. Stop going off topic. No one is asking about changing plan. We know we can change to other plans. People are more interested in this plan because it is one of the more cost effective plans from Optus Prepaid. Most of the other ones are lousy - that's why Optus called this Epic Value plan.

                  This is OZBargain.

Most likely, people on this plan will stay on Epic Value and depending on the amount recharged, they get different benefits. That's how these plans normally works. If people don't want to stay in Epic Value, they will need to switch to another Optus prepaid plan.

                  • -1

@netsurfer: You: "It might carry on at $180."

Me: "It's prepaid, there's no "carry on" for special offers, you'll be able to select from whatever prepaid options are available as per usual."

You try to spread doubt and uncertainty, I offer actual information, you get salty and eventually agree with me? k

                    • @jenna12: Epic value $180 has been around for a while. Optus recently changed it so it is more attractive. At $180, it is not a special offer, it is a standard offer.

$180 is not $120. If you paid $180 for epic value, it is not special at all - it is a normal offer. $10 for a $30 SIM (and then you go for $2/day might be considered a special offer, but if you paid $30 then it is simply normal offer).

                      • -1

@netsurfer: You're continuing to try and twist words. My statement remains accurate. As I stated, you will have access to whatever prepaid options are available. READ.

                        • @jenna12: In what way is my statement false? Epic value $180 might carry on. Do you have any evidence that Optus will kick everyone off Epic Value $180 in a year's time? Honestly, that doesn't make sense.

If you truly believe I am wrong, then reply to him so he will be notified. No point replying to me, I am not interested.

                          Read and reply correctly.

  • Is it 60 GB per month or per 365 days?

    • +1

      For 365 days

    • Per month, you wish. Per 365 days and you can use it at anytime or roll it over (up to 50GB).

    • +7

      60gb per minute.

  • Do Optus do anything like unmetered Spotify like Telstra does for Apple Music?

    • Yes, for postpaid customers.

    • Entertainment Extras are available on Postpaid Plans.

  • Went to the store and they price matched the online price, 2 per customer if anyone wants to grab an extra one.

They said porting can take hours but my number ported from Lebara in 5 minutes, was activated as soon as I walked out the shop.

  • Can I port a number from an Optus MVNO?

  • Is it possible to get this with an existing number?

    • I just tried switching an existing Optus number to this deal via Optus chat and they told me "No, it's for new numbers only".

      • You can port in from another provider, as long as its not Optus, and you can keep your number.

  • Also, I can't seem to find it but, what happens if you use all of your 60gb by say 7 months in? Can you add more data for a reasonable price without being gouged?

  • Would this deal give me access to Optus Perks?

    • +1

      Yes

      PREPAID CUSTOMERS ENJOY
      No contract
      Awesome network
      Optus perks

      • Damn, have to wait 11 months for the Catch Connect SIM to expire.

      • Except it's not an awesome network any more. Vodafone is much better where I live (Malvern East) and work(Hawthorn) in Melbourne. Lucky to get 2 bar with optus.

    • When you click on the deal it has Optus Perks there.

  • Do i have to activate within 30 days of purchase also where does it say it

    • You don't have to, but if Optus elected to withdraw or change the Epic Value $180 plan in the future, you will only be able to activate whichever new / replacement Epic Value $180 plan at the time.

It's basically Optus saying activate soon as this plan won't be available forever. They will not guarantee you get this plan if you activate late this year (the pack I received from physical store - from another deal says 6 months expiry - so Optus has already changed this plan once). The SIM does technically have an expiry date of 4/12/2020. It is doubtful they will keep this plan as is until Dec 2020.

    • In addition to netsurfer's comments, since this offer is valid till 31 March in-store, there shouldn't be any issues if you activate by 30 April.

  • Can I transfer my current Optus number over to this plan?

    • +3

I was able to do this via Optus web chat.

      • I was not able to do this. were you optus post paid?

  • Does any one know if it's possible to start a plan with a new number, but then after a month or two "port" in an existing number and ditch the one you started the plan with? Thanks :)

    • +1

I dont think so as number is assigned to the SIM. Whether they would be prepared to send you a new SIM to port you number to is the question. Give them a call and ask……..then report back here.

  • I read this in the Critical Summary Imformation:

    "Service expiry
To keep your service active you need to recharge 186 days from
your credit expiry, otherwise you may require a new SIM card to
use the service and you may not be able to continue using your
    mobile number."

Does that mean you will hv to recharge 6mths before expiry to continue using?

    • No, if you don’t recharge within 186 days after your credit has expired your service will be disconnected and you’ll lose your number. From memory they send reminders before they do it though. I remember I didn’t recharge for a couple months back in the Nokia days and they had sent me a reminder to recharge if I wanted to keep my service active.

  • Would this work if I posted from Amaysim considering they're an Optus MVNO? How do they limit the 1 per customer, is it possible to make 2 different purchases and activate them under different email address but same name?

  • The problem with this, if you ain't careful, you'll end up blowing 60 gb quota in a matter of weeks.

    • you should be able to limit your use in your phone's settings

      • Or at least set up a notification on the phone when x mb are used and'or track usage per period e.g per month. My kids' Ooppo A73s do a daily notification but Oppo use their own limited version of Android. Stock android has very good data usage tracking functions.

  • Hmm I want to change my dad over to this but he’s on an Optus plan. I guess I’ll have to go in store and do it there, hopefully they can price match. If I didn’t have a couple months left on my Kogan I’d probably risk it buying by it online and if it didn’t work for him I’d use it

  • 5GB/month is enough for me.

Here's hoping for a smooth port out of Vaya to Optus when I get this delivered.

    • I am not sure you can port out from vaya as they use Optus.

  • Anyone used one of these in a Optus wifi modem ? It says for use in a mobile phone. There doesn't seem to be any specials available for broadband data sims. I need something for my elderly mother in law and I know she won't use much data each month and would prefer a deal that lasts 6-12 months. I wonder if I activate it in an Optus mobile phone and then move it to the Wifi modem will the Optus system let it connect?

    • Dont see why it wouldn't. If in doubt call them and ask.

  • not a bad deal.

  • Awesome deal, much better than russian kogan.
