Telstra Prepaid 12 Month SIM $200 (150GB Data, Unlimited Calls/Text, Intl Calls to 20 Countries) @ Telstra

7320

First time posting so be gentle.
Just noticed that Telsta is trying to stay competitive with Boost etc.
Original price $300 - slashed to $200 for a 12 month Plan, with 150Gb of data. 20 Countries with unlimited international calls.
Seems to be a very good deal considering that Boost is actually more expensive (but… less data).

WHATS INCLUDED
Unlimited calls and texts to standard Australian numbers.
$100 Extra Credit for international calls and texts, roaming and premium SMS.
All inclusions for use in Australia

btw - You need to scroll down to see the offer.

Anyway, Enjoy.

Best deal but already with Boost.

  • I don't use data and thinking to move 2nd Sim number to boost for free international calls.

Receiption & supportwise what's difference between boost & Telstra?

    • +2

Receiption & supportwise what's difference between boost & Telstra?

Reception - they have access to the whole 3G/4G Telstra footprint, and performance in theory should be identical. (there's no artificial cap with MVNOs like Aldi or Belong)

Support - you get the same live chat support for both Boost & Telstra, however Telstra has the advantage of retail stores (especially if you need a SIM swap) and an app / 'My Account' experience for managing your balance/history etc

Here’s hoping this causes the telcos to start a bidding war to bring better value deals.

  • +1

Can I buy this deal and save until my plan expires in December?

  • Great deal! If only I didn't have a contract with Optus for another year :(

  • What is the billing amount at the end of the 12 months term?
Can I port my number across when though it is prepaid?

  • Anyone knows the expiry on this deal?

    • Yes as stated above 5th August 2019
      (11.59 pm)23:59 aest

  • +2

Wait, this is only $17/month and it includes all calls/texts. Why wouldn't you get this over the $50/month plan (other than needing more data)?

    • +2

@synergy - I'd say since people need more data.

    • +1

Seems the same, only issue is some people want more than around 12GB per month of data.

  • what is the best way to make use of the $100 extra credit?

    • +5

get a gf/bf in a country not included in 20 countries for international calls.

    • +4

$100 is for the whole 12 month period. Monthly $8. Calling to strangers in other countries will be fun.

      • You can also use it for Premium SMS — great for entering competitions!

Here is what i have been told by the online sales agent:

    =============================
Zedffrey Mari at 17:41, Jul 23:
Most likely you have 1-3 months before you can activate it. It depends on the SIM kit that you'll be receiving because there will be an expiration date on the SIM kit itself.

    =================================

He confirmed that the maximum expiry dates will be 3 months (if we are lucky)

My Optus Huawei contract expires in December .. i am confused now !

    • +3

Something better would come.. keep hope :)

  • If you had a 5G phone could you access the Telstra 5G network or is that limited to postpaid for now?

  • +4

There goes Lebara. Scores of people will port out. This is coming to
    $100 per 6 months (or $ 15.38 per 28 days)
    12.5GB data per month
Unlimited standard international calls to 20 destinations.

    • +2

Lebara sucks with its service, especially internet. I am stuck on a 12 month plan expiring only early next year. Never ever Lebara for me

  • What are people using these for, especially those with high monthly data caps on their mobile? (Serious question)

    • +10

Probably watching YouTube or Netflix on their soul crushing commute to the city everyday on Metro Trains.

    • some people may rely only on their simcard for their internet. They do not have any other source for internet/Data at home/work…

    • Norp? (not serious answer)

  • i moved to boost :( , always something better in life

  • +1

Good for those who need a bit more data than the Boost deal

  • I am not able to see list of 20 destinations. Link of the page not working for me. Anyone has list of this?

    • +4

      Asked Online chat:

Here are the list of countries that are included:
Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, UK, USA and Vietnam.

That's good telstra include Philippines but optus don't.

    • they use too shame on optus!

  • My telstra plan expires in 2 months, can I buy this and use it months later?

  • Outside of Data, is there any advantage to this deal over the Boost deal?

I'm currently with Telstra on a plan, so assume porting to Boost is pretty simply and changing to a Telstra pre-paid also easy?

Cheers for the help, I'm leaning towards Boost as 6.66GB per month is more than enough for me, but if there are any other advantages I'd consider just going with Telstra straight up.

    • +4

      Telstra Air maybe useful bonus?

      • Ah yep, not high on my priority list, but thanks - good to know.

      • +2

Boost works with Telstra Air (tried it last night)…

    • +5

Porting from Telstra to Boost has the most hassle. Telstra postpaid to prepaid was straightforward. But to save $50, I'd do it.

"If you are porting from Telstra to Boost Mobile, you will need a special blank Boost Mobile SIM. Please call 1800 100 933 (8am-9pm AEST, 7 days) and we will send one out to you.

If you’re in metro Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart or Brisbane, you’ll receive it the next day (if your order is placed before 4pm).

When your blank SIM arrives, contact Boost on 1800 100 933 (8am-9pm, 7 days) to activate it.”

      • Great help, thanks.

      • +1

See comment below that this deal isn't available to existing Telstra customers. All the more reason to go with Boost

        • Game.set.match.

          Thank you.

    • IIRC, data usage for the live pass apps is unmetered only for Telstra customers.

  • +3

Only available online, or can buy from … Coles/Woolworths?

OP - perhaps you wanted to update your body text to include the following:

    WHATS INCLUDED
Unlimited calls and texts to standard Australian numbers.
$100 Extra Credit for international calls and texts, roaming and premium SMS.
All inclusions for use in Australia

  • +3

Be aware that international TXT are not included

    • +1

They are to a limit of $100

$100 Extra Credit for international calls and texts, roaming and premium SMS

For those already on a 12 month contract with Telstra, can we upgrade to the Telstra month to month plans, cancel after a month and move to this prepaid plan.

I know I only have till 5th Aug to purchase the sim, but if I have 90 days to activate, then technically I should be able to pull this off, right?

    • See my comment above.

    • Yes, any early termination fees should be waived when you move to the 'new' Telstra plans (you'll need to pay out any device payments if you have one on the contract), and then you're month to month and can leave at any time.

  • +6

Well, I am glad that so many found the deal interesting and hopefully worth their time.

I just spent 55 minutes getting my father's Telstra post paid plan changed to pre-paid, but… they will in no way allow you to access the deal I linked to. The only way to access the deal with by purchasing the Deal (and sim).
I hope that helps anyone from wasting so much of their time!
i.e. Current $300 12month deal via the recharge system is unchanged.

    FP.

    • +2

Can you port out to another provider and then port back in?

    • Because they wanted to target new customers, not existing ones?

    • I'm with Telstra post paid and didn't quite understand that. Are you saying you cannot change your current sim to this deal, but you can order the sim pack via this deal and then port it over when it arrives?

  • I see Philippines in the unlimited category, I upvote. 45 AUD Optus plan for roaming and this for second Sim to call Philippines. Very cheap.

    • Could you explain the Optus one please?

      • +2

The $50 plan was discounted to $45 recently, which includes 'free' roaming and a modest amount of data https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/464707

('free' as in there is no daily charge ala Vodafone's $5/day)

  • I tried a Boost sim for a week to test it out (current long time Optus customer) with my new phone, a Nubia Red Magic 3.

Could not get VoLTE to work at all, despite numerous live chat sessions, being told it had definitely been activated, checking hidden Android menus that VoLTE was properly on etc, etc. Even putting the sim in another phone and still no VoLTE.

Yet my Optus sim has no issues with VoLTE in the same phones and stays on 4G during calls.

Will I have the exact same experience, no VoLTE on my particular phones, with a Telstra sim as I did with Boost?

    • +3

Will I have the exact same experience, no VoLTE on my particular phones, with a Telstra sim as I did with Boost?

Yes. If the ROM is missing the VoLTE settings for a carrier, then no VoLTE for you. It's possible that the Optus settings are included but not Telstra ones with your particular ROM.

  • +3

Another advantage of this over Boost - this one includes Data Banking of up to 200GB. Excellent!

Disadvantage of this over Boost - you have to pay for your international txt and MMS out of your 'included credit'. Txt charged at 20c, MMS 75c. Will this run out in a year? Depends who you know OS I suppose.

  • So I can't keep my number? I would love to swap to this deal but with no number porting I just can't..

  • I got the pixel 2 family and friends deal for $59 with 15gb of data. After selling the phone, cashback and credit, this works out to be about the same price per month with no contract. Incredible value especially when I don't even use all 15gb. Will definitely be taking this up after my contract expires this year.

  • +1

So this deal is for new customers only, only new number not port in, and you have to activate the sim card within 3 months period? That's what I can conclude from all of above comments?

    • where did you see no port in?

      • +1

ihavok mentioned in the above, below is the summary.

        ihavok 40 min ago
Hmmm…. I just got off a Live Chat. The Telstra rep said that prepaid sim kit cannot be used with an existing number. It can only be used to activate a new number.

Which suggests that a sim kit CANNOT be used to :
        - recharge an existing Telstra prepaid account
        - port an existing number accross to Telstra (would need to ask them for a blank SIM for this, I believe).

Anyone have any better info to add?

        • +1

My experience with live chat was a little different. It was 30 mints ago.

          Me: One last thing
Me: Am I able to port my old number?
John Zeus: May i know from which provider?
          Me: CatchConnect
John Zeus: Yes you can, as long as the service is active from them and you're the authorise of account owner.
          Me: sweet

        • +3

the site states "Keep your own number or get a new number" - wouldn't this mean you can port in?

    • Yes

    • The live chat told me that I could port my existing number in.

  • +3

Wow! I was going to purchase the boost $150 for $140 tomorrow from Coles, but I was not confident 80gb would last me 12months. $150 definitely will!

I have ported from Telstra to boost last week, (and on $40 starter pack) but will have to go from boost to Telstra again! I’m asking live chat now for the process, but I might just port to another carrier for 24h as it sounds like an easier option

    • In the same bucket as you. Let me know what they say thanks!

      • +1

They told me to port it as normal, but I don’t think they really understand the process….

Me personally I will just port away to optus for approx 24h then back into Telstra activating the starter pack as a new customer porting number across from optus..

        Edit:
If you can make out what this means… then here is the response from telstra..

“Oh I see. Here is the thing. We would like to extend our hands to you right now. What will doing here is that we will be the one to place you an order to transfer your sim across to us (Telstra) for your convenience.
And with that being said, the order will comes with the new sim card as well.”

        • Why should this be any different from moving from Telstra to Boost (as I'm doing currently) with a $40 prepaid sim. I had to ring up Boost and they said I can't keep my number unless they send me out a blank Sim (which is arriving tomorrow). They will then add the credit onto this new sim when I ring up again. A bit painful but can deal if this is only once every 12 months.

  • Hey, my number is in my ex-boyfriends name so it's a bit complicated…. Can anyone tell me the process to port your number to this Telstra deal?
Can you do it all online (via webchat etc) or do you have to speak to them in person?
(Just wondering how much effort my ex will have to go to).
    Thank you :)

(And yes we have looked into him transfering ownership of the account to me, but it requires us to sign paperwork together in front of a JP and we now live in different states).

    • A change of ownership request does not requirea JP or require you and your partner to be in the same room

      • Update: I've received the actual form via email (it went to junk mail) and the live chat was wrong, it just needs a witnessed signature from my ex. So much easier than what live chat explained! Phew.
        Thanks for the help :)

    • (And yes we have looked into him transfering ownership of the account to me, but it requires us to sign paperwork together in front of a JP and we now live in different states).

What carrier are you with currently that you're looking to port from?

      • Woolworths mobile :(
That's what they told me in live chat… I'm waiting for them to send me the transfer form so I can see the exact requirements.

        • +1

Are you prepaid? It looks like you should be able to do it over the phone (so that consent is recorded), based on this post from a Woolworths Mobile rep a few months back

For Prepaid change of ownership, the Contact Centre can do that over the phone.
          https://whrl.pl/Re2TNy

We need to be able to capture consent from both parties and for now the only option is to do it via a call to the Customer Hub which is recorded.
          https://whrl.pl/Re9PKD

          Another post mentions

I just called them on 1300 10 1234. They said for prepaid that you have to send an email to [email protected] with a copy of both your and the other persons drivers licence and then you both have to speak on the phone.
          https://whrl.pl/Re9QdA

A bit of dancing around, but hey, no need to be in the same room or having a JP.

You could always post to Telstra if he's happy to have the service in his name, but when you change it to your name, you can lose things like any credit left on the account. https://www.telstra.com.au/my-account/change-of-ownership

  • +2

If only telstra supported eSim.. This would be perfect

    • +3

Or if Telstra prepaid supported Apple Watch.

  • How this is better than boost?

    • +2

Nearly twice as much data (150GB vs 80GB), boost works out to $1.75 per GB, Telstra works out to $1.33 per GB

    • If 80G is enough for you in 12 months, boost
If 150G then go for this
Price different $60 (or $5/month) atm.

    • -1

also Telstra includes the live pass for AFL for free streaming of AFL matches… I don't think this works with Boost

  • Is Telstra pre paid roaming better? Boost roaming is absolutely shocking!

    • I noticed this when swapping to boost, roaming is very bad

      • +1

All prepaid is pretty shocking when it comes to roam. Post paid voda has $5 a day, Telstra has $10 a day thing. I am on boost. I never pick up when roaming. Call back with a soft phone service - I got a maxotel extension.

        • I am assuming you are referring to international roaming. Not sure if there is a concept of domestic roaming in Australia ;)

  • +1

How do people control their monthly data spend ? Wouldn't to finish the whole lot in first month

    • wondering the same

      • +2

My Android phone tracks data usage in 'Settings' and alerts me when I use data past a certain threshold. Not sure about Apple devices though. I'm sure there's some sort of app you can install?

    • +1

I download apps for my iPhone, but it only give you warning or notification.
On Android, i believe you can get warning + cut off monthly usage you set.

    • Just divide the total to per month. If you stay under every month you're golden.
You can always log in to check.

    • There are going to be a lot of disappointed kids who use all the data in the first 6 months then nothing ha ha.

  • What about CatchConnect? It has 375 GB data for $205 for 365 days!! All data is available from day 1.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/451561

    • Not Telstra.

      • Yes, I don't know what is the big deal about Telstra? I have used CatchConnect and it worked perfectly within CBD and Southeastern suburbs of VIC.

        Save money!

        • +1

I’m in regional WA. I can tell you that these resellers such as catchconnect is not good value when there is limited coverage. You may as well be on optus or Vodafone.

          • @jakeyo: I agree. If there is poor coverage, then makes sense :)
