it's very slow, and ssl doesn't seem to work. However it's a handy backup to have. Works o.k. without ssl turned on.

    • ssl works fine for me on port 563 didn't try 443. It's as fast as advertised (1Mbps)

  • can anyone get the Captcha code to work?

    • +2

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReCAPTCHA

Check it out, you'll be surprised what it actually is haha

    • +8

there is a second small calculation Captcha near the bottom, make sure you don't miss that :)

      • thanks, why did they go to all the trouble?

      • ahhh I've never seen that one before - thanks!

  • Done, nice!

  • Getting this error:
    Error
There is a maximum of 1 account per user. You don't have an account yet? Then contact our supportdesk.

    • I think they log IP address per acc reg.

    • Worked when I signed up on iPhone (using 3G).
Weird since I didnt even try last time offer was open

    • I got this error, when I tried pressing it twice.

    • I am getting this, I am using telstra and vodafone mobile internet :(

  • +1

Ive signed up but no idea how to use it. Is this the same Usenet as the main one people pay for?

Captcha code incorrect. What hell is that? Tried many times

    • +5

there is a second small calculation Captcha near the bottom, make sure you don't miss that :)

      • thanks for that

      • I entered the calculation exactly as it is. It didn't work

        • +1

it worked for mua try again and double check both captchas this time (btw say if the calc was 42-7 then you should enter 35 not 42-7)

        • I had exactly this problem. Checked my email and voila - confirmation successful!

        • @dins LOL I was doing exactly that, retyping the equation, until I read your comment. Thanks

    • Wouldn't work for me either, tried 10 or more times with both boxes filled in correctly.
Changed country from Netherlands to Germany and worked straight away.

  • signed up, but have no idea what is it & how to use it even after google….sigh..

  • So i downloaded the UseNeXT program and put in my username and password, then it tells me login name needs start with "avi" so i chuck in avi before it and still doesnt work.

      facepalm

  • Now I get this error: There is a maximum of 1 account per user. You don't have an account yet? Then contact our supportdesk. This sucks. I never registered before

    • +1

      Yeah, I get that too.

Edit: Interesting - got it to work by using a different connection. Was previously using work's internet, so either there's an IP block or the work's filter is the problem.

Edit 2: Ok, yep, it's an IP block. I used my mobile wifi to set up mine - just tried for a colleague and I now get that error. So you can only sign up to one account per IP.

  • What does the 1Mbit refer to? Download speed?

    • Yes, it's the maximum speed you can download at. And at that speed, you're better off to just use torrents. Still worth signing up for though I guess.

      • +1

Yeah, that's pretty bad then. I think I'll give this a miss. Cheers.

        • -1

up to 600 days retentions of files, no need to wait for seeds like torrent.

        • +2

With the amount of torrent websites (and therefore seedboxes) there are around, you'd have to be looking for something pretty obscure to find a file with no seeders.

But you're right, it's not bad to have as a backup although I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of people who signed up for it never actually used it.

        • There is much more on UseNet
          * not lame p2p groups so the qauility of releases is much better.

This could be fairly debatable actually.. the number of torrent users far exceed Usenet users. And there are also a lot of "filesharing" forums which frequently provide quality material — not like the badly encoded stuff you frequently find on Gnutella. The catch is of course, the files are hosted on premium filehosts so you'll need to have a subscription in order to download at full speed.

From my experience with Usenet, there were many occasions where obscure files do not exist on USenet and i had to torrent or DDL from Megaupload / Rapidshare etc.

          Total - 6.84 PB

          Enough said.

        • +2

This dude knows about the Scene, he is definitely badass

  • +6

    Use SABNZBD+

    Free, good, multi OS, etc.

  • Doesn't seem to work. Having authentication issues, with and without SSL.

    • it's still works.

  • Might sign up for an emergency backup location.

    • -1

last I checked, bittorrent hasnt shown any sign of slowing down..

      • +3

But users/sites are always being sued/shutdown in p2p world. Usenet has avoided this (besides the newzbin case) because people don't know about it, or find it too diffcult (just look at all the 'wtf' posts here) and hasn't become mainstream and thus not worth RIAA et al attention.

        • Too much work for the average user to setup leechers anyways :D

Not to mention the real usenet servers out there require a minimal amount of financial commitment for 'proper' usage - with speeds like you see on BT. The adoption rate of usenets will never be on par with BT (free, unhindered access with simply a few clicks). I think your fears are unwarranted my fellow leecher.

    Works great, thanks.

Click the link and direct to the home page you may see:
"The first free Usenet supplier in The Netherlands"
I dont think the connection is working in Australia. wish I am wrong…

    • +18

Yeah, I hate how the internet only works in the country you reside in.

  • Thank you OP :)

  • Woking fine for me (australia) using newbin pro full on port 119

  • Hi can some one explain what is this used for, i mean what is this??

    • +2

It's a login to access a usenet server, which you can use to download files with. The most common and easiest way to download files is having a .nzb file. Similar to a torrent file, it aggregates all the download pieces and lets your usenet program grab the files off the servers.

Normally the index sites that provide .nzb files are pay to use, well the best ones are, but im sure theres some free ones lying around.

For a program, I recommend unbinz. Very simple drag and drop interface.

The reason why this popular is that normally you pay for access to usenet, either monthly/yearly or by download quota. Note that this free one is limited to 1MBit, so your max download will be less than 150kb/s. If you pay for access usually it maxes your connection

      • nzbs.org is generally regarded as the best, and it's free.

        • "No new registrations for now"

          Unfortunate really.

      • thanks mate , really informative.

      • "The reason why this popular is that normally you pay for access to usenet, either monthly/yearly or by download quota."

Yes, that's right. And remember too that some people prefer a paid service because your ISP can see everything you download unless you have an SSL connection (which this offer does not provide). Personally I buy blocks of 200GB from Astraweb (which provide SSL like all the rest).

I love Usenet. Used to be a big fan of torrent sites, but Usenet is just so much faster and more convenient. It's just when I look for obscure stuff (like foreign language audio books) that torrents win out.

  • i just tried it, torrents are faster

    • Then this provider must suck, Astraweb will max any conenction.

      • +8

This is a free 1MBit connection. Hard to complain about that when it's free.

  • List of countries does not include AU…?!?

    • +9

So lie about your country, are you new to the Interwebs?

  • +1

    Keep getting

    'Failed to connect: (10060, "(10013, \'Permission denied\')") [email protected]:119'

    :(

    • +3

      Try port 80 without SSL.

      • Good info! Thanks.

So much for taking the advice on xsusenet's FAQ page

    • Try port 563, I think that's the default port for SSL

  • The status of downloads is still Waiting :(

  • Thanks I just Logged on

  • Thanks, just got it but no idea how to use it - some homework to be done :-)

  • Had a look around, very disappointing for classical music, and other niche stuff.

    • +1

That's always been the case with Usenet.

  • I'd been interested in getting started with Usenet for a while. Thanks phillay

  • +1

    What speeds are everyone getting?

    • It's capped at 1Mbit for free accounts.

    • I'm getting around 60 to 120 KB/s, not SSL. Consistent with 1Mbit limit.

  • +7

Just in case people don't know, 1Mbit = capped at 128KB/s download speeds.

    • +1

Thats my normal internet speed anyway, so no difference for me =)

  • Can't get it connected on SSL, but normal works fine. Capped at the advertised speed which makes it really only suitable as a backup, but it will do a good job for that.

    Thanks for the post.

  • Works well, good for grabbing the odd mp3. Thanks OP

  • best free client for usenet?

  • Cheers..signed up for this.

  • +1

LOL, 1 Mbit is like 125 Kbyte/sec but it is free so can't complaint.

  • Thanks easy sign up

  • -2
