Upgrade Xbox Live Gold to Game Pass Ultimate $1 @ Microsoft (3 Years Max)

1460

This has been available for some time but I haven't seen it posted as a deal before.

Upgrade your Xbox Live Gold subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for just $1 for up to 36 months.

Steps:

  1. Purchase an Xbox Live Gold subscription. Search OzBargain for the current best deal on these. Digital codes are available in 3, 6, or 12 month increments. You can load a maximum of 36 months. Once your account is upgraded this offer will no longer work, so if you want a 3 year subscription then purchase 3 * 12 month subscriptions before step #3.

  2. Activate the Xbox Live Gold codes on your account, either through Microsoft’s website, or directly through your Xbox One console. When claiming the codes you need to ensure you don't opt in to recurring billing for the free bonus month otherwise you will not be able to stack up to the 36 months. (Only applies if you are aiming to get 3 years)

  3. Sign up for the $1 Game Pass Ultimate trial.

Your Gold subscription will be upgraded to Ultimate Game Pass. You should see the expiry date when you click on the 'Services and subscriptions' tab on Microsoft's site.

What you get:
* Access to over 100 high-quality console and PC games
* New games added all the time
* Xbox Game Studio titles the same day as release
* Exclusive member discounts and deals
* Free perks including in-game content and partner offers
* Plus, enjoy all the benefits of EA Play—coming this holiday at no extra cost!
* Free access to Cloud gaming (Project xCloud) - launching in Australia early next year

Last posted in August with Brazil cards at the time being the cheapest (roughly $100 for 3 years worth).

    • I hadn't seen that.

It should be a separate post as Xbox Gold subscriptions purchased elsewhere can also be converted using this method.

      • +8

Post title should be adjusted as it sounds like the offer is $1 for a 3 years subscription… Whereas the $1 is the price to convert your existing Gold subscription to Ultimate.

        • +3

Edited to make it clearer. I was trying to avoid making the title too long.

          • @[Deactivated]: Probably something like "Upgrade Xbox Gold to Game Pass Ultimate $1 (Max Upgrade of 3 Years) @ Microsoft"? As it still sounds like it is $1 for 3 years.

Also, not sh*tting on your post! :) This should be a long standing deal and one that is posted every so often as a reminder that it is available so everyone can take advantage.

I did this from the previous post on August and got 3 years for $96.

            • @Shads: Done.

  • +16

Easily the best deal in gaming

    • +5

Part of why I opted for an Xbox Series X instead of the PS5.

That and also better backwards compatibility.

      • +4

And it is far more powerful for the same price. And you can use your existing peripherals, unlike PS4. But i think, like you said, the real draw is the thousands of dollars you save via GamePass compared to plebs paying top dollar for one game on PS4.

        • I'm opting for a PS5 because I have a decent computer. Game Pass is amazing for PC but it also means I can entirely skip Microsoft consoles from now on.

    • +1

The Series X, like the One X is more powerful than its competitor, the online ecosystem is miles better, but for some reason the PS5 is still tipped to outsell the Series X. Thoughts as to why this could be the case?

      • +1

Console exclusives? That's also the only reason I have a PS4, and haven't bought an msoft console since the 360. I don't know if that accounts for the whole picture but it definitely factors in for a lot of us.

        • Yeah I would probably have to agree with you on that. Sony's exclusives just absolutely kill it, more bangers than not. If only Scalebound had launched on the One. I've got a beefed up Gaming PC for them XBO exclusives, how rare they are!

      • Also cos PS4 outsold XBO by 2-3:1 due to the royal stuff ups Microsoft made at launch. Online only, banning second hand game sales, kinect etc… which they had to reverse very quickly. A lot of sales will be people will simply be transitioning from the older PS system.

I have a PS4 but see the value that Xbox is offering in this generation (Xbox Game pass, backwards compatibility, better hardware, quick resume, playing games off HDD) so am making an objective switch.

        • Without a doubt, Xbox seems to be offering the better everything bar the actual games that you play on the system. Over the last week the amount of trades I've done towards a PS5 over Series X has been incomparable. Most people also have Gaming PCs, so this might also sway the numbers.

          • @ThePriceMatchGuy: To be honest, yes PS4 has better exclusives but at the moment its a bit of a toss up. Mile Morales is apparently very samey as the previous. I'm personally not into Japanese ARPGs so YMMV. A lot of the AAA titles with be non exclusive - Cyberpunk 2077 etc.

Meanwhile Microsoft have accumulated a lot of great studios in the past 12-24mths and it's only a matter of time before they start producing. Bethesda studios is the key for me. You could foreseeably see The Elder Scolls 6 become an initial XB exclusive for the 1st 6mth.

      • Ps5 is a million times more likely to get an exclusive metal gear game directed by Hideo, after Konami inevitably invite him back in as board member or something. All of Japanese non Nintendo gaming is tied to the PlayStation.

I ended up paying ~$160 for Brazil keys and a nordvpn sub (just wanted reputable VPN) a month ago. Still a great deal at 1/3 of the price that it would've been otherwise. Keen for Halo Infinite and Starfield in few years time!

    • Did you have to make a Brazilian account?

      • +1

Nah just login via Brazil vpn

    • -3

It no longer works, they have caught on.

      • Is that true? I was just about to do the brazil method to try to save $100. It seems like lots of people are still recommending the VPN way.

        • +2

He's incorrect. Literally did this 3 days ago for both me and a mate switching over from PS4. We managed to get 3 keys for $150 and I paid for ExpressVPN sub because it seems to be the best around. worked completely fine for both of us. Saved over $400 from paying for it monthly over 36 months.

        • +1

Some users get country/currency mismatch errors when converting, there are workarounds for this though mentioned in other deals.

    • I thought a year of Brazil was only about $33

  • +11

Has been posted lots of time.

    • Has it ever been posted as a separate deal or always in combination with another offer?

This will allow someone who bought an Xbox Gold subscription from anywhere to upgrade for just $1.

Doesn't hurt to have a new thread, may help some people.

      • +5

Has been posted several times as a deal.

Important to note that if you have previously used the $1 Ultimate deal you won’t necessarily be able to use it again.

You will still be able to do the conversion, but will need to buy the first month at $15.95.

Note also - conversion is only 1:1 if you don’t have an existing Ultimate subby.

      • Semantics.
If anyone read the details on the other deals they would realise this.

        • I hadn't seen the other deals when I posted this.

  • +1

Wouldn’t be surprised if MS withdraws this offer not long after the Series X launches on Tuesday. They got the next Skyrim game. They got all the western games.

    • +5

New Skyrim? lol I think you mean new Elder Scrolls but you'd be forgiven for thinking that as they have been flogging Skyrim so hard for the last 9 years

  • +1

Great, wasn't aware of this and just getting into game pass on PC (terrible platform but good games)

Where can i find the best XBOX GOLD pass? just used my $1 free first month, will this still work if i buy gold + upgrade after?

    • +1

You need the gold sub first as it will upgrade however long you have left to Ultimate.
Best deals are thru a VPN and another countries subscription.

      • -1

        -

  • +8

This has been available for some time but i haven't seen it posted as a deal before.

    LOL

    • +6

Ambitious, I reckon I've seen it 3-4 times

  • +6

For step 2 when claiming the codes you need to ensure you don't opt in to recurring billing for the free bonus month otherwise you will not be able to stack up to the 36 months. (Only applies if you are aiming to get 3 years)

    • I’ve added that now. Thanks.

  • +1

Wait are you saying we can get 3 years of Xbox game pass ultimate for $1 extra on top of the 3 years live gold we paid?

    • +2

      Yes.

  • +1

Waiting for black Friday for a good Xbox Live deal :)
    Brazil back up to $56/year.

    • Damn, I remember you could get Local 12 month subscription off ebay for that price, a few years ago.

    • Agree, gonna do this too :)

    • +2

It will be all for naught if MS pull the $1 upgrade deal.

      • +1

Doesn't make sense to IMO. XSX and S just launching.
They'll want as many people signed on as possible and be a further point of differentiation between the PS5.

    • I was holding out for about 6 weeks after deciding I was definitely going with Xbox after being on PS4. But now the time has come to pull the trigger as I want GPU on day 1 given I don't have any games to play without it.

  • +1

OP since you are highlighting this conversion method as a separate deal, I think it is important to mention in the post people turn OFF auto-renew when redeeming codes.

If they take up the extra free month offer and buy 3 x 12-month cards they will not be able to redeem the last 12-month card.

Meaning you sacrifice 10 months and get stuck with a 12-month card that may not be very useful in 2 years time.

    • Thanks. I’ll edit the post.

  • If I got a Brazil Xbox live subs, would I need to make a Brazilian account?

  • +1

Important if you plan to do the three years: do not add a payment method for recurring billing. This will give you a bonus month for each 12 month sub I did this twice and then I couldn't use my third code (exceed 36 months). MS support just told me to wait 2 months to add the third code they couldn't cancel the bonuses.

  • I have a 14 day free code to game pass that came with my console I never used. Does anyone know if that will also convert my remaining xbox live months to game pass?

  • How do I use this 36 months free if I have an Telstra xbox SX on preorder?

    • You can't really… That's why paying full price for XBL/gamepass on the telstra preorder wasn't the best deal aside from securing console stock.

      • +1

It was still the best deal if you cancel pretty much straight away - the bonus Telstra points are worth about $100 (ie a free controller) - each beats any other pre-order deal (of which there were not many).

In my case this will also push me into gold - which adds some more value.

Even if you throw away one month of Telstra pass, because you already have 3 years, you still come out in front.

Plastic discs are a waste of resources, Microsoft should go all in on Game Pass.

    • Unfortunately, digital games cannot be resold or traded once you get sick of playing them, this is where physical media has the advantage even if it is a pain to insert the disc each time (and uses resources as you said).

    • How do you figure they are not currently going all in? Every MS game launches day 1 into Game Pass, it has hundreds of games, it will have all Bethesda games day and date, EA games are also now included, they allow offers such as this one, im not quite sure what your definition of "going all in" would be if you think they need to do more?

  • +1

Can you use the account to play games on your pc as well?

    • +1

      Yes, you can.

  • +1

Unless I'm mistaken, you can only use the $1 trial if you've never ever done a Microsoft Game pass account before..

    • Yep correct! If you have had game pass before, you will be charged the a full months rate ($15.95) instead of the $1 trial.

      • Incorrect, it seems random but several reported they got it more than once. I did it 2x on my main account myself. Had few months break in between though. But yeah, don’t count on it to work

    • +2

      That's utter nonsense.

    • +3

Had you stuck to the tax dodging you might've had a point.

But you went straight into nutbar territory right after, so… :/

    • I pray for your swift recovery.

    • You think we're going to be lectured to by some basement-dwelling high school dropout? Get out of here with your dribble, fanboy.

  • +1

This sounds like amazing value! I recall someone telling me about how to do this with the Brazil thing…you need to wait until your current sub runs out to take up the $1 deal and then re-sub using this method. Is that still the case? My GP Ultimate runs out soon and this would be a great way to continue it.

    • I would like to know too. Mine expires 5/2021 so still have time.

      • No.

Having your current sub runs out just means that you can resub with a gold pass etc. (If your current pass was ultimate), but you will not be eligible for the $1 for 3 month trial as that is only for those who have never had a Microsoft Game pass before..

Thus in your case, you'll load up for 3 years using the Brazil method, loading your sub up with, I believe, gold pass, and then pay $15 to converted everything into ultimate.

        • I’ve had Ultimate before (after $1 conversion) and had Microsoft forcefully cancel it on the day it expired. I was then able to convert Gold to Ultimate for $1 again.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/9180319/redir

          • @ShortyX: Cool thanks for the info guys. I'll give this a go when i get a chance. Even if i don't qualify for the $1 thing, it still works our pretty great at $15.

          • @ShortyX: I believe if Microsoft cancel it, you might have been flagged to not ever had the service and thus, able to do it again.

I've tried and reading the forum, as have many and it automatically redirect you to $15/MTH.

  • Does this 36 months method still works or it's stopped by Microsoft?

    • It still works.

      • Have you got the link to that post? Thanks mate.

        • 36 months will work.

If you've had a game pass before, you won't be eligible for the $1 for 3 months.

  • +6

I just bought 3 years of Xbox Live from here:
    https://www.mtcgame.com/tr-TR/microsoft-points/xbox-live-gif…

Never heard of the site but took a punt and its legit. Got the codes about 10 minutes after purchase.

Worked out at about $46.90 per year. Redeemed using a Turkish VPN and it all worked fine.
Upgraded with the $1 deal and all good. So all up about $142 for 3 years. Pretty good I think?

    • +1

Champion - I was looking at this as well, but was too scared to test myself. Will be doing this when I get home.

    • That's a very good price, Brazil codes are on average ~$55/year now. Other users have had success with that site as well in the other deal. Only downside is mtcgame don't have paypal.

    • No PayPal payment method on this site

      • Yeah forgot to mention. I just took the risk buying 1 year first off with Mastercard and it came through ok. Tested the code on a vpn and it redeemed so was happy to get 2 more years after. But yeah no paypal might put some people off.

    • Which VPN did you use to redeem the codes?

      Thanks.

      • I have a paid VPN account with PIA (www.privateinternetaccess.com). Used the iOS app and used safari on my iPhone whilst turkey vpn was on. worked smoothly just for the code redemptions.

        • How did you avoid paying additional fee when paying by credit card?
I just tried buying 1 year and if I pay with AUD, it adds more than $2 on in fee so paid in USD, which converted to $47.73 in AUD.

          • @keejoonc: Paid in USD, let my bank do the conversion. Went on my online banking and it charged 33.95 usd which was 46.89 aud. Think there was a 1% fee on the store.

    • I seem to be having a problem redeeming the code. It keeps saying the code is for a different region.
What am I doing wrong! Please help!

      • Yes you need to redeem the code using a VPN and connected to a Turkish server!

        • I was using free VPN and must have been a trash one. Worked with a different VPN.

    • Tried using this one with my ING debit card.. Then I got a text message from ING that saying that my card is now 'restrained from further use'… Have to call them to sort it:'(

    • It's now $37.13 USD per year? $51 AUD.

  • What if I have gamepass ultimate at the moment and it expires in 5 months, how do I get this deal ?

  • Will this work for previous subscribers?
My Game Pass, and XBL Gold sub just expired - so currently no active subs.

If I get a new 12/24/36 sub to gold - will this trick work?

    • +1

It will still work but you may have to pay $15.95 instead of $1 to upgrade if you used the promo before, but this is still worth it.
