      • Yeah, I realise that's how GC payments look, but the catalogue only mentions a discount, not a GC, so I'm not sure that they're doing it that way.

Any idea if the fenix 6 pro solar will be less than its current price $1097 ? I am in the hunt for one.

    • +3

$699 is a brilliant price for the 51mm Garmin Fenix 6X Sapphire Carbon.

I have the fēnix® 6X – Pro Solar Titanium with Vented Titanium Bracelet and whilst I LOVE IT, I now can't justify the extra money to get the solar charging option, it does slightly increase the battery. For instance, with my solar charging tests over 12 hours of full bright sunshine, the charge % didn't change so if your 6X Pro Solar battery reduces to 15%, by putting it in the bright sun for 12 hours, the battery will remain at 15% but not get enough charge to increase.

I went full hog and got the Titanium with titanium bracelet, it was a gorgeous watch but I finished up changing the band to a black mesh magnetic band and put a black TPU cover over the case and also put on a 9H tempered glass screen protector as the 6X Pro Solar doesn't have sapphire glass, only a gorilla glass that can scratch.

I replaced the titanium band because the watch was HEAVY when playing golf.

I paid about $1200 for my 6X Pro Solar Titanium vented watch about 12 months ago when Iconic had a sale and with my Cash Rewards so I've basically have a black 6X Pro Solar without sapphire glass. :(.

    Is fenix 7 coming out?

    • +2

why is this comment being downvoted?

it's not clear that it's a snarky comment and I would personally take it as a genuine question, have there been rumours of a Fenix 7? it is fairly common place for manufacturer side discounts to indicate that the remaining models are being flushed through system in preparation for upgraded model. It's also at the approx 1.5 years product cycle at the moment too

      • because fear

  • Saw the Samsung Galaxy Watch at $299. Great buy at this price?

    • Galaxy watch were realesed about 2.5yrs ago. They are old.
Galaxy watch3 is the latest version… i have access to samsung exclusive deals and i should be able to help you out if you really want one.

      Galaxy Watch3 Cellular (45mm) $499
      Galaxy Watch3 Cellular (41mm) $ 475
      Galaxy Watch3 Bluetooth (45mm) $400
      Galaxy Watch3 Bluetooth (41mm) $399
      Galaxy Watch Active2 Bluetooth 44mm) $350

  • What are some of the pros of getting this over the 245?

    • +1

Altimeter, garmin pay, considerably longer battery life, maps, sapphire display.

      • +1

Mmm ok. Nice to haves but can't really see any of these as vital and worthy of paying 400-450 dollars more for.

Plus it's bulkier to fit the bigger battery.

        • Open water swimming and multisport activities as well. And it looks much nicer with DLC steel bezel

  • +5

I don't get how they can make a Fitbit clone for $30, yet somehow this thing is worth $1399!? Madness.
Which features over and above your standard fitness tracker justify the additional $1,369 (or $669 with this deal)?
Hell, I'm glad it's got maps for 41000 golf courses. I'd hate to get lost finding my way down the fairway! Haha.
    This is commercialism gone nuts.
I know all the fan boys are gonna neg, but seriously, happy to be enlightened.

    • +11

Depends what you want to do with it.
This has so many features average people don't even know about (or probably don't use). I know I can broadcast HR data over Bluetooth to display on a live stream for example. I can also pre set custom run routes & be able to follow them through the bush without getting lost as it will tell me if I've gone the wrong way. I can also track run cadence data & see at what point in a 10k run my run form changes, letting me know what endurance goals I need to work on. At the same time it can tell me my anaerobic vs aerobic exertion so I know if I'm working hard enough. Performance data can be graphed over time to help identify how I'm tracking towards my fitness goals.
I can also do all this while bluetoothed to headphones listening to music without having to carry a phone.
The amount of data these things can record is crazy & no comparison to a $30 clone sorry. But if you just want hardly accurate HR & steps, then a cheapy is probably fine. These are designed for athletes & enthusiasts who know how to use them & make use of them.
I was sceptical about the price at first but after owning one I can see the value in it. IF you take the effort to use the advanced features.

    • Yes, it's the addressable market of those who do serious hicking, of road runs activities… other than that most features will not be used by the average. But consider apple watch 6 gps is $800 or so so that's also creeping up in price.
I must say i wasn't too buy a garmin 6pro solar but at the same time i will only use 10% of its functions so I've been holding out.

    • +3

to be fair, watches traditionally has always been like this. To an even greater extent really. I mean, you can get a casio watch for $50 or you can pay towards of 500k for a rolex watch and both will tell the time.

At least in the smartwatch world, there are substantial benefits between a $30 Fitbit clone and this watch. For $30, you'd get a pedometer with maybe a HR monitor. This watch is not really marketed to people who just want to figure out whether they're doing their 10k steps.

  • I've got a forerunner 645m, which appears to have most of the features… Is it worth the upgrade?

Also does the solar have the sapphire screen also?

    • +1

No, the 6X Pro Solar only has the gorilla glass that can scratch, not as hard as the sapphire. I have the 6X Pro Solar and from day 1 I put on a 9H hardened screen protector, doesn't seem to affect or diminish solar charging at all.

  • The 6X is probably too big for most people that’s why is on sale. Also a newer model is probably around the corner. The 6X is officially dropped to $999, but $650 is pretty darn good.

  • but $650 is pretty darn good

Where can you get it at this price? This deal is $699.

    • Maybe his talking about using Suncorp gift card discount or some sort?

      • I want the 6 pro.

        • +1

I got the 6 pro during the singles day sales with ultimate home gift cards over a week ago for about $599. Thinking if i should trade up for the 6X for the sapphire which would be too big for most including myself, would jump on it if it was the 6 sapphire.

I tried on the Forerunner 245 Music and the 6 Pro before getting the 6 Pro, i felt the 245 was too small and the 6 Pro was just nice on my 17cm wrist. I plan to try the 6X for practicality but am already guessing it will be too big not to mention the extra weight. Practicality and functionality should outweigh bargain if i want to use the watch for the intended purpose of a fitness tracker (running about 35-50 km a week and gym) and daily driver.

Open to opinions for those who have gone down that path…thanks!

  • +1

To anyone who owns it, how comfortable it is to wear it over night for sleep tracking?

I am in the market to buy a Garmin Venu on sale but saw this and I am tempted to buy this instead of the former, although I might not use all the super features it does have.

My main focus is on running and occasional hiking and also using it as a daily watch.

Any comments over this watch or any other options that I can look into are welcome.

    Thanks.

    • I'd love to know as well regarding the practicality of using a watch this size for sleep tracking. Another question is how does it compare in accuracy and the readability of data with AutoSleep on Apple Watch, which I've bee using for a couple of years and have been very happy with.

      • Negged for a question? Really?

    • +4

I have the 5x currently and have been using it for sleep tracking for over a year now. To be honest, you don't even notice you have it on after having it on for a few days. You can strap it on a bit looser so it doesn't strangle your wrist and allows for some level of breathability. The optical HR sensor still works with a bit of gap in between.

      • +1

        Thanks for your reply.
Have you found out any practical and real-life benefit from your year long sleep tracking or is it just another metric?

        • +3

real life benefit = my watch reminding me daily that I should sleep more :p

But the best bit from the sleep tracker is the resting heart rate, it's a good general measure for your level of fitness and also health (your resting heart rate is elevated when you're sick!). Your resting heart rate gets measured by Garmin during your sleep and I find the trend interesting - per above, to get a gauge of health or fitness.

      https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreat…

These are for the 5x, but its the same size watch.
With skinny wrist this thing might start to hurt. Might want to go to JB or rebel and try one on for size before you commit.

      • I tried a dummy today at JB, and its similar and even a bit slimmer than the G-shock mudmaster that I wear everyday.

So it's almost same as wearing a G-shock.

Also like I said I found the Garmin Venu to be smaller than I expected and I like slightly oversized watches as well.😉

    • +1

It's a big watch but it's also much lighter than most metal watches (Seiko, citizen, etc). After a week it was kind of weird trying my old watch on.

The issue with sleeping with it is that if it's sufficiently tight then I often find my wrist sweating where the watch is. I guess that would happen with any rubber band watch though.

  • How many mm is this? 42mm 47mm or 51mm
I searched the part number and it came up 51 mm which is gigantula as in tarantula on your wrist
who wants a tarantula on their wrist? no wonder it's on sale probably too big for most unless you are 6 foot 3

    • +1

      6X = 51mm
      6 (no X or S) = 47mm
      6S = 42mm

      Cheers.

  • I'm looking to buy my first fitness watch, I was looking at the garmin instinct for $299 as I don't want to spend a huge amount but I'm a sucker for a good deal..i will be hiking, doing weights, swimming and want to track my sleep….is the fenix 6x worth the extra $400 and the nagging from the missus ??

  • +3

I went down to Harvey Norman to try the Fenix 6x and clicked a picture. Here you go

    https://ibb.co/1G9rbXX

    https://ibb.co/S5Fn5Dz

The other picture is with a G-shock mudmaster on my wrist. I have normal sized wrists i guess.

It does feel big, but I would like to hear some comments as well.

    Cheers.

    • It's a tough call IMO. I definitely think the 6 pro/sapphire is a better fit for most normal sized wrists but then it isn't on sale for $699. Decisions, decisions!

    • Looks noticeably wider than the gshock.

      • It's a bit wider for sure, and it sits tightly against the wrist bone, which can be an issue during running and strength training.

And yeah, like I said the only reason I am considering to buy this now is because of the decent discount o it. Otherwise my choice was Garmin Venu.

        Thanks for your input mate.

  • My local JB didn't have 6X in the try on cabinet. But I did try on the 5X. Which I believe is the same size as the 6X.

It's a big watch. But if you're currently wearing something biggish, then its not a big leap.

    • Yup, as I am currently wearing a G-shock as my daily driver, I don't really mind the size of it.

But its the tight fit against your wrists as Garmin doesn't have curved straps sitting on top of a plastic casing, which is the case with G-shock.

I normally wear my watches one increment looser.

  • +3

I have the 5X sapphire and have been eyeing on the 6x for a year. The 6X has longer battery life and larger screen size. but the 5x is still okay unless you use the map for 8+hours. . I think I am going to skip the 6 series for now. Hopefully the 7 series will have a better solar charging rate.

As for the people comparing the sports watch with LCD smart watches, The fenix is more rugged, has much longer battery life due to not having a LCD screen. and also quick physical button controls for easy operation on the run.

  • +1

Does JB accept payment with multiple giftcards?

  • About the same price of a Series 6 watch, I think for iPhone users, unless they are very series into fitness, Apple watch is still a better choice.

    • +2

yep. these premium garmin watches are purely designed for that.
      people serious about fitness.

its a fitness watch first, with some smart watch features.

apple watch is the other way around

    • While an Apple Watch does meet all of my fitness needs and is indeed a much better smartwatch (I currently own a series 3 42mm), I've always hated the calculator on my wrist look of the Apple Watch and I also had the screen scratched during a fitness activity. A sapphire Apple Watch costs a lot more and is not a sound investment given Apple's planned obsolescence strategy.

I don't think I'd miss talking to my watch too much but I would probably miss sleep tracking with the AW AutoSleep app, which works really well - I've read that sleep tracking on the Garmin is surprisingly not that great, not to mention that it may not be as comfortable to sleep with as the Apple Watch.

One thing I definitely wouldn't miss is having to charge the Apple Watch every day.

      • +1

        Same, I have a Series 3 42mm.

Thinking between a Series 6 or the 6X. Or continue with the Series 3, it actually still does everything I want except now requires frequent charging.

        • +1

if you use the smart watch features such as taking calls on the watch, responding to texts and such I think it's better to stick to the apple watch. If you don't find yourself using those features much then the switch will be probably beneficial.

also garmin pay supports fewer banking institutions than apple pay

I believe the garmin watches now support bluetooth sensors as well so if you've invested in the sensors for apple watch you can transfer them over without a problem, however i don't think there were all that many options for apple watch anyway

i think the latest apple watches have always on display anyway but the garmin fenix's don't light up like a light bulb when something comes in and can still be discrete to look at

  • Quite tempted, don't really mind the larger watch in return for slightly longer running battery and more pixels.

I have a Samsung Gear S3 years ago when I was an Android user, the watch worked well with the phone. Then I switched to iPhone, the experience was dreadful, so much so that I quickly bought an Apple Watch.

Due to recent weight gain, I want to get this watch as a motivation to get back into exercising. Things might have improved, but my earlier experience from non-Apple smart watch is a major deterrent factor.

  • +4

I went to my local JB yesterday and tried on a sample watch they had.

    https://imgur.com/Q9aJ0xJ

    https://imgur.com/zaDFGVn

    https://imgur.com/FMp4nPN

My wrist is 17cm and i am comparing this against the Fenix 6 Pro.

    Pros:
    - Price
    - Relatively light for the size
    - Larger screen
    - Extra Battery Life

    Cons:
    - Bulky - does not sit well under the sleeve if your planning to wear under work shirts
    - Hit's your wrist bone - can't comment how this will impact workouts

I would suggest if you are planing to get this to try it out first.

Hope this helps others on the fence like me.

    • Thanks mate. The photos are very useful. Dang now I need to decide.

    • Is that a dummy? Everyone trying on has the same watch face :)

      • +1

Yes there are samples of the actual watches that some stores carry. They are made to the same size and weight.

  • +2

can one order online for this price?
i can't go into the shop in the morning, and i think they will be sold out by 6pm when I finish work.

  • So I am currently using a Fitbit Versa 2 which only today I tried to go for a run just using AirPods to play music (without my phone) and it cut out after about 30 seconds, its a known issue which by the sounds of it isn't fixed yet by Fitbit (over 2 years ago it was reported).

If i was to go for this watch, my usage would be running (3 times a week), some light weights work (3 times a week) and walking (maybe once a week). Is this overkill for that usage?

    • I am like you. I onlyneed it for weight training and once a week run. So in considering the suunto 9 or garmin instinct as well.

  • Since this is going to be my first watch with a heart rate and pulse ox sensor.

Can someone tell me how tight you have to wear this watch to get accurate readings? And does it gets uncomfortable for all day use?

I am asking because I like to wear my watches one point looser than a tight fit.

@shegeloaf , I check Suunto 9 but that watch is almost the same size as this one, 50 mm case dia.

Like you, I am also intending to use it for the similar reasons.

    • +1

if i push my band all the way in from all sides theres around 5mm of gap between sensor and skin. I'm not sure if you would consider this tight or not but i would say it's definitely firm.

Going from 5plus to this watch, the heart rate sensor has been more accurate but the pulse ox sensor i think i would have some doubts over, i don't have any other instruments to check against but it seems to take a long time to get a "lock" and turning all day logging on significantly reduces battery life.

the watch just needs to rest against your wrist when it takes it measurements. If you're exercising I think it would be best to wear it tighter rather than loose, but i would recommend an external strap where possible too. Some members have commented that the readings can be a bit off if you're doing activities with your hands/arms too, like weights/rowing etc

    • I have a 5 and it is very robust wrt to positioning. I can have my wrist fully flexed and be able to see most of the sensors and it still accurately records HR.

      • what other instruments are you verifying your heart rate against? I'm interested because on my older unit i found that it would deviate a significant amount, some days it would be spot on and others it would be reading up to 30bpm under, it was almost as if it runs through a calibration at the start of the event and then during the event it learns off that? I am comparing to a HRM strap and also personal feeling as 30BPM delta you'd definitely know the difference :D

not saying it affects all watches but this was the experience that i've had.

        • Hmmm, interesting. I don't have additional equipment I'm just doing it old school … fingers on radial or ulnar pulse. Granted that is at rest though. I have infrequently stopped in the middle of a run or activity to check carotid pulse and it's usually accurate. I don't do weights or rowing or swimming though so that may well bias my view. I would agree though there is little point in wearing it too loose.

  • +1

Wouldn't mind trying to get Rebel price match on this as I can get 10% vouchers.

    • Coles have Him gift cards for 15% off tomorrow. I think they can only be used in store though.

      • That would work, my JB has stock.

    • Rebel price matched it for me today (I already had a voucher as a gift that I wanted to use). Note that you can use a maximum of 3 vouchers if you are purchasing it online.
Must say I was super impressed with the Rebel Support and service. Brilliant.

  • +1

Thanks to everybody here. I chewed the bullet and went ahead with my purchase early with a delivery for tomorrow.

    Cheers.✌

  • fantastic price but 51mm not for everyone. unless you are a rapper or got a jacked wrist/forearm. even then, using such a big watch everyday is not ideal.

  • +1

I tend to agree. I want the features that this watch offers and at this price. Just not the size. My wrist measures 21cm and I still think its too big. Also coming from wearing no watch to all of a sudden wearing a watch this size may take a bit of getting use to. A deal like this for the 6 sapphire would have been perfect.

  • Can anybody confirm if the Him gift cards can be redeemed online for JB Hi Fi? Their website seems to indicate they can only be used instore.

    • In store… and your mileage might vary with the gift cards as the T&Cs state on max $500.

      • So if the max is $500, the watch would be $625 yeah as your max discount with gift card would be $75. Not bad if it works.

Is there a deal listed on here for the 15% off cards?

        • Yeah I'm deciding whether the 1 hour drive to the nearest store is worth the $75 saving. There is a deal on here somewhere.

          • @Rochie: Found the gift card deal, reading thru it now. I could visit multiple Coles and get 7 x 100 cards brings watch down to $595

            • @oxblood8: I would imagine so as long as you go instore. I believe they accept unlimited gift cards instore. Mine nearest JB is unfortunately 1.5-2hrs away so I can't do it. Hoping for a 5-10% off sale on gift cards for black Friday.

  • Fenix 7 out soon

Have the Fenix 5 sapphire and been going strong. No need to upgrade

Just bought from JB. Awesome device that finally cost just $599 with the 15% off gift card from Coles.

  • so tempted, I have one on hold at my local JB for me,

Just wondering how well is works with Android? and I assume you can take and receive calls from it like samsung galaxy watch etc?

    • Go and try it out and decide. I was tempted to swap my unopened 6 Pro for this but after trying it on and watching this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChzoF26LOm8 I decided to keep the 6 Pro as the main focus is to use it as a fitness tracker and the 6 Pro's size is much better for my purpose. Was really tempted by the price of the 6X as well… good luck!

      • I just bought it, went down my local and picked it up, cost me $0 anyway because comm bank gave me $750 for free as part of a loan settlement promo if you settled prior to the 30th so is just used that :)
