Apple Computers 10% off (M1 256GB MacBook Air $1439.10) + Delivery/C&C @ JB Hi-Fi

1020

Got an email from JB this morning saying Apple computers are 10% off until the 10th so just one day I suppose. Excludes iMac Pro, Built to Order, refurbished and factory scoop. Officeworks is still at RRP so should be able to price match. Apple education are giving AirPods with MacBooks so JB may be able to match that, thanks fozzie.

Officeworks has now matched, thanks vodamerc.

Why is there a picture of a non Apple laptop on the deal? Lol

    • Yeah I noticed that, I think because I just linked to the listing of all MacBooks it just shows any random laptop lol.

      • +3

I swapped the links around and the picture updated :-)

  • +4

Don’t forget education store is throwing in AirPods. Jb hifi can match that (perhaps you want to use gift cards )

    • Updated the description, thanks.

    • +5

Were you successful getting them to match the Airpods offer? Every store I've called have said they can't

      • +2

same. most stores in VIC said no

        • Hi guys not personally but Zeno even managed to cancel order and replace with this offer read here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/596435?page=1#comment-9918…

Other people also confirmed it there

          • @fozzie: Sry mate but the fact is we cannot get JB to match this offer in store or via the phone anywhere in VIC. Maybe you can enlighten me where to go

            • @ggfatty: Sorry can’t help. Maybe someone in Victoria has managed to do it? If they have just say that a “friend” managed to get it

      • im going to the Apple store to get it. they'll match JBs price and give me free AirPods and a year free Apple TV+ but tbh you prob get Apple TV+ free anyway with this purchase)

        • Also 3 months of Apple Arcade is included

        • How did you go? Apple usually matches price or give promotion e.g. Airpods, I don't think they usually do both.

    • Do I have to buy from the education store to get the AirPods ? Assuming it’s also 10% off ?

      • +2

        Yes

        • thank you

  • +1

I wonder if jb would throw free airpod to match Apple Education offer

    • +2

      Yes

    • Why not just buy from Apple directly? Returns are way better.

      • You can save another 5% by buying discounted gift cards.

      • gift cards :)

      • -3

Still don't see the point. You won't get gift cards for the exact amount so you'll have extra money left that you have to spend. No returns and if you happen to get a refund you'll have to spend the money in the same store. All of that to save 5%…

Complete waste if you ask me.

        • +1

You can with Suncorp/AAMI. You choose the amount and it charges you 5% less.

  • Just bought a new MacBook Air from them on Tuesday and they refused to budge on the RRP (and I desperately needed it). Has anyone had any luck with them price-matching after a sale?

    • -7

      Credit card charge back?

    • +3

I'm sure if you go in to see the manager and kindly explain, they will refund and allow you to re-purchase at the discounted price.

    • +2

Yes. You can get the price difference back on your method of payment.

    • If you used a credit card you might have price protection

    • +2

Thanks guys. I called the sales number and they offered a refund of the difference straight away. I’m a happy customer now. :-)

    • +1

All purchased at JB have a 14 day price guarantee. Just take your receipt back into store and get the difference refunded to your method of payment.

  • Has anyone had any luck with BTO and 10% off?

    • The JB email specifically excludes BTO.

    • Try price matching the educational store. You can upgrade the ram etc. on the educational store so you can see if JB will match it

      • Has anyone able to get price match with the apple education store pricing with free airpods?

        • +2

I've called a few around Brisbane but they've all said they won't match the free airpods offer

        • Ordered BTO with UniDays pricing last December but still not delivered. Called JB HiFi and told them I want to cancel and order from Apple Efu Store with the free Airpods and they gladly matched the offer for me.

        • +3

You may be lucky and get someone new who doesn't understand, but price matches are for like items. Companies add freebies to make it hard to price match. No one in the store I work at would do it with the airpods, we do the education pricing all the time, but not additional freebies unfortunately.

    • I got JB to price match the educational store price for a 16GB MBP and paid with gift cards. They would not price match +10% off.

      • Isn’t education 10% off anyway?

      • Do you need proof of student id/email?

        • +1

Majority of people haven’t been asked. I’m a teacher so could get the discount in any case

      • do JB sell 16G mac book pros with M1 - I was under the impression to get 16G you have to get special order direct from apple?

        • They don't stock them so it's a build to order which takes 3-4 weeks but JB do sell them.
I purchased on boxing day and the price at Apple Education for MBP 16GB 512GB was $2,371.60. I showed them the price and asked if they could match - they said yes. I paid with gift cards and saved a few more dollars.

  • HomePod mini?

  • -1

    Everyone needs a Macintosh

  • +1

    Any 16GB ram version available?

    • none - not even CTO

  • +1

    Officeworks have now matched

  • When looking at the specs of entry level MacBook air and MacBook pro. I cannot find any reasonable justification spending the extra $$$. Change my mind.

    • +1

The entry level Pro has the 8-core GPU which does seem to noticeably outperform the 7-core, a few more hours of battery life, a slightly brighter screen + speakers and of course the touchbar if you're into that. I think the average person would be well suited to the entry level MacBook Air but there is reason to get the Pro if you are going to be doing anything intensive.

      • +3

This is for my son who is starting year 10. For some reason they have mandated only apple at the school, which for me is a big problem as I am not a fan of apple in general.

        • +8

He is using it, not you

          • +1

@casho: Yeah but i am paying for it!

            • -3

@dlakers3peat: yeah but again - he's using it … not you, he's getting educated not you lol… chill dude ;)

        • +4

Just get him the air, it will last him many years

        • +2

Resell is quite good for Apple products so just ask him to take good physical care and resell it down the line.

        • Older apple machines hold up quite well and there's less to lose if your kid doesn't take good care of it, or needs something quite different for uni.

A brand new m1 Air would last 10 years easily, but you could just as easily get a 2015 Pro for $600 which will still hold up quite well

        • -1

Sounds like he's a private school boy

      • Or you can wait for for the m1x 14" range to come out.

        • with a matching price hike.

        • I think that might be on the four USB c port model, and they might put a little extra power to the m1 also to make it worthwhile + the 14 inch screen, not coming to the 2 USB c model anytime soon

    • +2

The only compelling reason to get the Pro is the battery life. The performance difference is not that much to be honest.

    • +7

Go the basic version. Basically same performance. The pro has a fan and touchbar (in place of function buttons).
Fan isn't really needed and will actually introduce dust into the machine so fanless is preferred. The thermals are already really good on the base model. I would recommend to try getting 16gb ram.

I'm an apple cynic but they did really well with the m1 chips.

      • i am on same boat.. either air vs pro .. but considering the big price difference, i may go with Air

        • You'll be happy either way but I think long term base M1.

Correction to what I wrote above. It appears the M1 macbooks only come with 8gb ram. Happy to be corrected.

          • +1

@Caped Baldy: can you get it in 16gb ram but it will have to be BTO from Apple. I did look at some reviews on youtube before I pulled the trigger, 8gb seems to be plenty for most people on an M1 Mac.

Bought mine a few weeks ago at 10% off + 5% off with the giftcards I used. missed out on the free AirPods :(

            • +1

@jezza p: Ahh, thanks for the info.

This is why I'm cynical - costs an extra $300 to go from 8gb to 16gb.

Meanwhile I bought 32gb ram for my new PC for $150. I know it's desktop vs laptop but it is still a ridiculous margin.

              • +1

@Caped Baldy: Even more ridiculous is the SSD upgrade price - same 300 for upgrading from 256 to 512 GB - yep 300 for 256 GB !! Just the other day crucial 1 TB was on sale for 125 @ Amazon!!

              • @Caped Baldy: at first i had the same sentiments but consider the distance between the ram and cpu between a standard PC vs Apple SoC - it's much shorter, that's what we're paying for.

                • @nicolascage: So less material right?

Apple aren't a $2 trillion for being good value. They provide service and quality goods (most of the time) and people are happy to pay.

                  • @Caped Baldy: I guess less material, but improved performance when the distance is almost as close as the cache itself

    • +1

If you're the type who expects one device to last many years, Pro is the better option due the much longer battery life and better thermals. That being said, this is first gen product, the next few macbooks are likely to see some nice upgrade, like better io and outputs.

  • +1

I went from 2017 Macbook Pro 13 to MBP 16 i9 model and performance difference when doing things like opening apps, browsing web was absymal. Then sold the 16inch and got the Macbook Air 13 M1. I was impressed by how fast MBA 13 is. Performance difference between 16inch and MBA 13 was immediately noticable and MBA is so much faster when opening up apps and browsing internet than MBP 16 core i9

  • As cheap as this is, 256gb is a bit limiting, and storage is an expensive upgrade for Mac.

    • +1

not the same as internal storage, but I picked up one of those cheap T7 (or T5) drives (vai ozbargain) and copy all my large content (games, files) to.

      • +1

I get I can do that, but part of the reason I wanna upgrade from my 4 years old laptop is so I can stop carrying a battery pack around. Changing it to external storage isn't exactly attractive lol.

    • use cloud storage or get a wireless SSD or better still just get the 512GB model for 300ish more. worth it if you need the HDD space on prem ;-)

      • 300 ish more is expensive, don't you think? It's 150 for latest 1tb nvme. And Apple wants 300 for a quarter of that?

It's a good laptop, but it definitely have Apple tax sneaked in.

        • Wait until 2025 and then buy a second hand M1 512 at a significant discount.

    • +6

I stickytaped samsung T5 1TB to my macbook and use the 90-deg angle cable USB-C cable to make it permanent 1TB external storage

      • +6

        True ozbargainer right here.

Your ozbargain Badge has been upgraded

        • Accepted 😂

      • But you lose the usage of a port. And when you use second available port for charging, you no longer have any ports left (assuming this is macbook air m1 we are talking about which only has 2 ports)

      • sounds awesome, do you have a picture? wondering how it works

        • +2
          • -1

@elcheapo: I’d recommend that you get a cheap hot glue gun and glue it on, it will look much cleaner

            • @jayboi: i use those nano stick pad thing, which quite strong but also easy to take it off .. hence there's gap between the cover and the samsung T5.. hot glue too messy to clean up if i want to take it off later

          • +1

@elcheapo: You are a genius. Thank you. I'm totally doing this.

      • I've done the same with a 2TB drive in my MBP (have 4 ports). but I used a magnetic mount:

        https://www.scosche.net.au/magicmounttm-surface.html

      • +3

I used Velcro strips from Bunnings. I don't think you need a video, but here is one lol

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejrmCnNv4Wk

With Velcro strips you can remove the hard disc for packing / travelling.

        @elcheapo

      • Any chance you can share a pic of your setup? I'm pretty keen to replicate it myself.

      • Alot more doable if the thing has more ports lol.

    • Get one of these instead: https://linedock.co/products/macbook-13in-docking-station it is a battery, 1tb ssd and adds extra ports while being a thin 13" pad that is styled to look just like a MacBook when closed. Pretty sure you can easily upgrade the storage too if wanted.

  • This price with the new M1 chip is just awesome. Plus you get 5% off if you use gift cards. Can't go wrong.
