The IKEA ones don’t last long for me. Have tried them in Xiaomi Zigbee devices and only last about half a year compared to the year the original batteries they came with. Also have to be careful about fakes on eBay that are really cheap but turn out to be a lot lower in capacity than a genuine brand name battery.

The cheapest trusted source I’ve been going to is au.element14.com for button cells.

        • shipping costs ($15 shipping for below $50 order) kills the element14 deal.

    • +4

You realise the CR2032 battery market is already massive right? Every small device uses these already. Millions and millions of them…

  • So this might sound like an ignorant question. There appears to be all these benefits to these airtags. However, could someone potentially attach it to someone else's car or throw it inside someone's handbag to track their location? I feel like this is a James Bond style stalking device with security issues that no one is talking about (yet).

    • +1

So Apple has already thought about this, so when a Airtag that is not yours is travelling near you, it will start to beep and you get a notification on your iPhone to turn it off. If you only have an android phone, or no phone then the Airtag that is now seperate from the owner, will start beeping so you can find it.

      • +3

it's currently set as 3 days before the beeping/alert starts, so you could potentially still track silently within those 3 days.

The 3 days bit can be changed by Apple (not user presumably) in the future.

        https://www.macrumors.com/2021/04/21/airtags-play-sound-afte…

        • If you have an iPhone though it will let you know someone else’s AirTag is travelling with you without its owner. If you don’t have an iPhone then it’s likely the AirTag won’t work very well. I.e. if they put it in your car and no one has an iPhone. It won’t be able to be tracked.

          • @itsme56: Hence the beeping. Unless you destroy the piezo part of the air tag or you sound proof the airtag to kill the noise.

  • +2

Bugger. Was all set for this with a new LatitudePay account set up …. and just noticed they go on sale at 10pm not am!!!

    • ahhhhh!!!!! thanks was wondering why it didn't work!

      • Glad it wasn't just me then. Now just have to remember to hit the HN website at 10pm tonight.

  • Anyone know if there is a button on the Airtag that you can press, then your phone will ring (even phone is on silence) just like the way Tiles work? I really like that feature from Tiles, very useful where you can’t find your phone.

    • +4

Don't think so, but you can use the FindMy ecosystem from other computers to ring your phone if necessary.

    • +1

From what I've read, this is the critical feature missing from these 1st gen AirTags - finding your phone using your AirTag

      Will hold out for v2

      • how does it Ring your phone, is another SIM reqd?

        • +2

AirTags can't make your phone ring, as far as I can see. That's what I meant by 'critical feature missing'.

But you can use the Find My app on any of your other iOS devices, or log into https://www.icloud.com/find in any browser to make your phone 'ring' in order to locate it.

It's a real surprise to me that AirTags don't have that ability baked in. The other companies do it already.

          • @andresampras: Oh ok oops

button on the Airtag that you can press, then your phone will ring (even phone is on silence) just like the way Tiles work?

I was meant to ask about the Tiles ringing, do you know too?

            • +1

@capslock janitor: Chipolo and I assume Tile devices can make your phone ring if:
              1. they are within Bluetooth range, AND
              2. the device's app is active/running in background on your phone

There's no similar compact tracking device that can make your phone ring from outside BT range afaik

      • Looks like I may wait for Airtag 2. I am using Tiles now with iPhone and really like the convenience of pressing the Tile to ring phone.

        • +1

Same, with my orbitkey/chipolo tracker - that feature is great, when it works.

Pity it's a dud in all other respects.

Which reminds me, I need to take it off my orbitkey.

    • can u confirm how the Tile rings the Phone?

      • +1

Tile devices can make your phone ring if:
        1. they are within Bluetooth range, AND
        2. the device's app is active/running in background on your phone

    • +3

If you have an apple watch you can do it. Mine works flawlessly.

  • +2

How close does it need to be to a 'find my' device to work? If you put one in you bag and someone stole it and then chucked it in a ditch, are we talking 3 metres or 20 metres to get a location?

  • If you get this 4 pack, can you share with friends and family for their own account? Or must it be used on one account?

    • +1

Should be able to. They can then set it up with their devices

  • Interesting tech. Is there similar for Samsung/Android world?

    • +1

Samsung Smarttags Plus. Also has Ultra Wideband tech.

    • +2

Samsung has a version but it only works with their recent high end phones

  • Any one can share $1 item link?

  • -1

the best option I reckon is buying
Harvey Norman $5 e-Gift Card no delivery fee and you still be able to use it later on
that will make it a $154 total

    • Is there an expiry date on the gift card? I was just going to get a 10 pack of AA batteries for $3

    • +3

can't pay for giftcards with latitude/zip unfortunately.

  • Newb question, does the discount apply automatically at check out when select latitude pay?

  • since my other half kept losing her iPhone .. would be wise to stick this to her iPhone

    • +1

No, because she needs her iPhone to track it. Even if you pair it to to your iPhone and then track her iPhone, Apple has built a privacy feature that warns her.

  • +1

    Can add to cart already!

    • no latitude pay option for some reason, how about your end?

      • I did have latitude on my end

        • might be the giftcard not triggering latitude pay

          • @Magicmannn: I don’t think you can use gift card with latitudepay… there was an earlier post of someone mentioning this…

    • Yup - already got mine at 9:55pm!

  • +1

Sneaky, they went live on Domayne at 9:58pm. Got me 4

  • +1

    ordered :)

  • +1

    Bought it! Thanks OP

  • +1

    Got em thanks

  • +2

Yup, went live before 10. Was pretty straightforward. For those wondering, the $50 discount is appplied when you click through to Latitude Pay site from checkout. Great deal.

  • me and my wife's latutude pay account coming back in errror…

    thanks latitude pay

    • Not sure if the same issue happened to me, but when I checked out the screen was stuck on Latitude "please wait do not close" loading screen. I left it for a good hour before deciding it was well and truly not going to progress.
In the mean time, I checked my email and the payment had gone through.
So if that is were your error occurred, you may have email confirmations as well.

  • damn missed out :((

    • Clear your cache, still can order for me.

  • So most likely pickup will starting from next Friday since it mentions:

    Available from 30th April 2021

    • Fine detective work sir!

      • 7th May now - wanna push your luck further? 🤡

    OOS at Joyce Mayne :(

  • OOS for All HN, Domayne and Joycemayne ?

    • Pretty sure it's saying OOS as it's technically not in stock until next week.

  • +1

First time using LatitudePay and was worried for a bit as the checkout process once directed to the Latitude website hung for a few minutes before finally going through.

The process was easy enough. Can't wait to pick up my 10 AA batteries too lol

    • +2

LOL….sure HN suddenly seen a surge in battery sales tonight!!!!!

  • Harvery Norman still has stock of the 4 pack.

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/apple-airtag-4-pack.html

  • Just ordered this with a pack of batteries.

  • Got them from HN with 10 x AAA batteries thanks OP :)

  • To those that said OOS, I think you still can order.

It shows up in mine as:

Temporarily out of stock. Available to order.

And I can still select the store as part of pick up

    • +1

It has always been saying this. Some people I think mistakenly believed they were available right away, when they're actually preorder until next week.

  • Also the 4 pack is back at Joyce Mayne again

    https://www.joycemayne.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=airtag…

    • Not coming up for me :(

    • its mysteriously hidden from the search result. The one pack shows but the 4 pack doesnt.

    • I have already added to cart, but could not checkout :(

  • Pre-ordered it (while it shows out of stock), but cannot select click and collect……got charged $17.95 for shipping….ouch……

  • +4

I think they are going to sell out of heavy duty batteries before they do airtags.

    • +1

I find it pretty sarcastic that in the battery world "heavy-duty" means the worst :)

      • extra heavy duty…
        extra worse?

        • +1

They didn't specify the chemistry of these batteries, but usually:
          heavy-duty=zinc carbon
          extra hd=zinc chloride
          super/ultra hd=alkaline

Personally I don't bother buying these "heavy-duties" and just stick to Eneloops/Energizers for more expensive devices and Varta for cheaper ones.

  • Bought a 4 pack and a couple of CR2032 to bump it up to $157

  • +3

i guess TGG also have $50 off using latitude pay.

    https://www.latitudepay.com/offers/fomo-promo-april/
    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/apple-airtag-4-pack-mx542zpa

but i ordered 4packs from HN.

    thanks op for posting it.

    • +1

TGG won't allow pick up for pre-orders, but they do charge lower postage if you prefer them posted. $104 delivered is pretty good.

    • +1

Thanks bro I was bummed out about missing HN, domayne and joyce but your TGG link saved the day. Happy days, cheers bud.

      • HN still has stock though?

        • Wife had already used the offer at hn for something else.

  • Seems like Good Guys is cheapest with delivery?

  • +1

Domayne has it back in stock

    • +1

Thanks! ordered from Domayne (no need to add $1 item as delivery is $7.95 to VIC)
no pick up available in VIC Domayne anyway

      • hmm, i think the delivery does not usually count towards the $150. You did check the latitudepay screen to ensure the $50 was taken off the total right?

        • It does count. Just placed an order like that at tgg. Got discount too.

        • It does count. I got it delivered as well

  • +1

Harvey Norman site has changed to say available from 7th May a few minutes ago.

  • Wtf Unfortunately you can't currently use LatitudePay. Please contact us at [email protected].
Well that's annoying, now the promo will expire before they fix it.

    • +1

They usually give $50 credit to spend, if you had error with promo. So you would be able to order later.

      • oh cheers I'll wait for that then. fingers crossed stock will be back sometime soon…

        • +1

don't forget to complaint to them and take screenshot maybe.
