Can you add the start time to the OP details so we get the blue TODAY banner.

Edit: I’m an idiot. It is 10:30am already.

    • +1

      It's already started :)

  • Basically a 5.1% discount compared to 3-4% you can get elsewhere. Not too bad.

    • -2

No decent flybuy offers the Woolies offers + 4% GC off kicks the butt of this one .

  • +9

That arse is 100% tighter this time around. What happened?

    • +1

They spent $11.9m last FY compared to $2.9m for marketing and design. But overall TTV has declined so they mostly holding back a bit.

    • +1

Yes, I always liked to grab the $50 ones. Harsh inflation this time around

      • Why is ANZ being so stingy ? CBA is throwing cash like pennies !!

  • Beautiful! Great job Tightarse! Thanks again

  • Does anyone know which expiry is correct? When checking on giftcard.com.au the expiry differs from truerewards

    • I would only rely on the expiry date provided on giftcards.com.au, as that is the “official” (for a lack of a better term) way of checking the balance and expiry date of a gift card issued by Coles Group Ltd.

      • That's good since it's a lot longer than 3 years expiry

  • Shut up and take my money!

    Thanks TA.

  • +2

Why does cash rewards work with small purchases. when i buy a 2k item, it somehow doesn't track. loss $200

    • :(

      • +1

Its okay Tight ass fixed it, got me the cashback.

Ill use the browser plugin text time.

  • Bought and tracked.

shame these can be used in store only, other than that, great deal!

    • Lucky you reminded me. Had a gift card ready to pay at online check out and realising they don’t accept GC’s…

    • Kind of kills the deal in the current situation. But youncould hold out hope they start accepting gift cards online before the expiry date.

    • Useful info for those in lockdown, cheers!

    • +3

Yeah I claimed $800 of coles gift cards to be used for online ordering, from a credit card points deal. I was pissed to discover they are in store only.

      Woolies next time.

      • +4

Woolies makes it easier to pay with your points too.

        • +4

And no pesky fuel receipt dockets. Everything is on the card.

        • +5

Coles gift cards can be a nightmare to scan too. It's enough to put me off using them.

Woolies ones scan every time - their app generates a code.

          • @gadgetguy: The barcode can be generated in Google Pay from the gift card number, this works reasonably well for me

            • @igorekh: It's not the barcode - I save a PDF with that in my phone, its getting the scanner to read it.

Even the Coles people at the self checkouts struggle with it. Can be waiting several minutes just to get a scan.

              • @gadgetguy: 100% agree- and try avoiding the self serve checkouts early in the morning using these gift cards to pay- time lag can take up to a minute or so!

I find WW can be hard to scan to but at least you can use the keypad.

          • @gadgetguy: @gadgetguy I've pretty much given up buying Coles e-gift cards for that reason, after being stuck at the self service checkout several times trying to get the damn things to scan. Went through a regular checkout last time I tried to use a e-gift card, and the checkout operator couldn't get it to scan either, so she had to enter the (ridiculously long) card number manually - she was getting flustered and kept making entry errors, so it took the poor girl 4 attempts to finally get the card to go through. I usually have no trouble at all with the WW cards - even before they had a barcode on them, it was still quick and easy to enter the card number (much shorter than the Coles ones!).

  • Thanks TA. Bought and tracked.

  • Thanks TA, absolute legend

  • +1

Thinking if I should skip this and wait for the higher discount that normally comes after for people who didn't sign up to the first round.

  • Thanks TA

  • +1

Thanks TA - added to the BCMT

  • Thanks Ta, just in time!

  • Thanks TA! :)

  • +1

Just bought one, says the cash back is due to clear 06/1/22. Does it really take the full 3 months?

    • +1

No, please read the OP. You'll have it in 3-5 days, as has always been the case with GCs :)

The $5 bonus will show as pending in your Cashrewards account immediately upon activating the offer (no confirmation email is sent). This will be automatically approved within 7 days of the gift card purchase being approved (as per the terms). Please ignore the bonus estimated approval date in your account as this is simply a placeholder. Gift card purchases are usually approved within 3-5 days of purchase.

      • Sorry must have missed that line. Thanks TA

        • No worries :)

  • Thanks. Fingers crossed we see Woolies again in the future (I live closer to Woolies)

    • Second that!

  • Thanks. Hundy for the wife.

  • thx TA.

  • +1

can these be compromised as well?

    • Not so likely, as can only be used in store. Maybe if your email is hacked into.

    • +12

I’m assuming you’re asking about whether the Coles gift card being compromised in light of some Coles Gift Mastercards being compromised…

To answer your question, it is not impossible, but it would be far more difficult and far less attractive to compromise the Coles gift cards in this deal when compared with a Coles Gift Mastercard.

A Coles gift card barcode compromises of three components:

      • The gift card barcode prefix: a string of numbers attached in front of the gift card number.
      • The gift card number prefix: a string of eight numbers at the start of the gift card number to denote the gift card type (e.g. Coles gift card, Coles Group & Myer gift card).
      • Unique numbers: a string of numbers unique to that gift card.

To redeem a gift card in-store at Coles, you need to use the barcode and the PIN associated with that barcode. Even if you manage to generate a barcode in the correct format, you will also need to brute force (or guess) the PIN, and there are a lot of combinations to test.

The only two ways I can think of testing gift card number and PIN combinations are:

      • On the giftcards.com.au website. The website (if it was designed well enough, which it hopefully is) would block you if it noticed you were attempting to check multiple gift card numbers and PIN combinations in a short period of time.
      • In-store at a checkout. Staff would get very suspicious very quickly if they noticed you were trying multiple gift card combinations at the checkout and kept on getting an “Incorrect PIN” error.

You cannot use a Coles gift card for purchase on Coles Online anyway, so it further reduces the desirability of trying a brute force attack.

From my perspective, generating a gift card barcode and generating the correct PIN for an active Coles gift card with funds would only likely happen due to dumb luck more than anything else.

Let’s compare all of that with the Coles Gift Mastercard.

The Coles Gift Mastercard is a prepaid Mastercard gift card, so the card can be redeemed at a lot more online merchants. Some unscrupulous merchants do not require a CVV to complete a purchase, so for some purchases, all you need is the 16-digit card number and the expiry date.

The 16-digit card number consists of:

      • The Bank Identification Number (BIN): a string of numbers to identify the financial institution that issued the card.
      • Unique numbers: a string of numbers unique to that card.
      • Check digit: a single digit at the end of the card number that checks whether that card number is valid.

The Coles Gift Mastercard card number structure is so limited that there is a theoretical total of 3,000,000 card number combinations.

The Coles Gift Mastercard is also created in batches, so it comes with a limited number of expiry dates. The expiry dates are printed on the front of the gift card (because customers would want to know when the gift card they’re about to buy will expire), so anyone who walks into a Coles or Coles Express store can see the expiry dates for some of the cards.

If you combine the fact that most online merchants will accept prepaid Mastercards, there are a small number of card number combinations, there are a small number of expiry dates, some merchants don’t ask for a CVV, and some merchants do not take the proper steps to protect themselves against BIN attacks, the Coles Gift Mastercards are far more vulnerable and far more desirable for fraudsters.

Of course, you can still have someone else use the funds on your Coles gift card without your permission due to other reasons (as @Yola alluded to), but in terms of a brute force attack that is likely to be the reason for the recent Coles Gift Mastercard issues, I think the Coles gift card in this deal is far less likely to suffer from a large-scale brute force attack.

      • +1

Staff would get very suspicious very quickly if they noticed you were trying multiple gift card combinations at the checkout and kept on getting an “Incorrect PIN” error.

Even if there were no staff members around, after 3 incorrect PIN attempts you are kicked out, and have to start the payment flow all over again.

        • +1

That reminds me! I just remembered that if you input the PIN for a Coles Group & Myer gift card incorrectly three times in quick succession at an EFTPOS terminal, the gift card will be blocked for 24 hours. That happened to me once, because checkout person and I both mixed up the access code with the PIN (back when they had separate access codes and PINs).

  • +2

The $250 card isn't a great deal if you have access to a portal that sells the gift cards at 3% discount.

  • +1

Ha so $5 back on both 100 spend and 250 spend, i mean who comes up with something like that? Clever marketing to trick you in to thinking, fk im going to get the $100 card why do i spend 250? if there was no mention of 250 would anyone really die for it?

    • Yes, 5% of Coles GC is pretty rare.

      • a post below says otherwise.

  • +3

These Coles Giftcards aren't susceptible to attack like the Coles Prepaid Mastercards?

    See: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/654897

  • +6

    5% off is disappointing.
Was $5 Bonus on $50 Coles gc (10% off) in May, June, July, Aug, and Sep
Can always get 3% off from Suncorp anyway

    • -1

But 5% > 3%. At this rate, I just take what is offered. Of course 10% > 5% and is a better deal.

  • +13

Must be testing how small a bonus they can offer to still get the sheep to follow. I'm normally one of the sheep but I'm baulking at this. Have to draw the line somewhere. For me it's hardly worth the effort. The marketing guys dangle a $5 bonus, which sounds okay but you have to buy a $100 or $250 gift card that attracts a base cashback rate of only 0.1%. that can only be used in-store - and there's always a risk of problems when trying to redeem gift cards. So 5.1% discount on $100 gift card and 2.1% on $250 card and +184 votes to date. Obviously YMMV….
I suspect that the more people that go for paltry offers like this then the more likely it is that paltry offers will follow. Where will it stop.

    • +1

if i saved $5 on this ill definitely spend $10 more at the shop while telling myself i saved $5 lol. its a trick to get us to spend more and more and more!!
      this is hardly a deal.

    • gift card that attracts a base cashback rate of only 0.1%

      This ^

I recall the reasoning was that the "Coles Gift Cards" were "rushed into the store" for the First Promo and the base rate would be looked at being increased later…

It's now how many months later and still 0.1%

Happy to be corrected here if I'm wrong?

I've got access to 4% so I'll continue buying my $200+ cards there.

  • +1

    Thanks OP!
    5 bucks is 5 bucks.
But why would anybody buy a $250 card????

    • +3

Yep and 4 bucks is 4 bucks and 3 bucks is 3 bucks…. at what point would you draw the line? That's what their marketing people will look for…. the minimum level of bonuses that they need to offer to get the sales they are targeting.

    • I buy the $250 with this deal. I then use it to buy a $250 Coles prepaid mastercard which I use to pay the ATO.

Yes those prepaid cards have a $7 fee but I get back $5 from cashrewards and also earn $1.28 worth of flybuys points.

That means the net fee is only $0.72 or 0.3%.

Why? To meet minimum cc spends that would otherwise be inelligible.

Time is money and I prefer not to deal in $100 lots.

  • +2

Great. Now going to use my 5% of gift card to purchase another $50 of groceries at Coles this week, to qualify for Flybuys points worth 35% off the purchase. Discount inception.

    • lol or may be do it for 4 consecutive weeks and end up getting $50 back and do the math and youll go fk i only saved 7% across 4 weeks of shopping

      • +1

The offer is 4 shops of $50 each over 4 weeks. $200 spent. 14000 bonus Flybuys points worth $70. So, 35% off the $200.

Plus one of the weeks had another 2000 bonus points on top of the above.

        • What?? i never get that sort of offers, its quite surprising all i get is spend $150 min for 4 weeks and get 6000 or something back. and i always go above $150 most cases close to $180 to $200, they are definetely playing teh marketing trick alright with me. if i dont shop in coles for sometime i usually do get better flybuys offers, i started shopping at woolies again. they lost my loyalty haha

          • @sammyla: I don't shop much at Coles, and when I do it's small purchases of maybe $10. I ignore all offers from Coles for 1000 Flybuys points for a $50 purchase, and after a few months they drop the bomb with a 25 to 35% effective offer.

It really does look like the more you shop at Coles, the worse the offers.

            • @Cluster: Loyalty doesn't pay anymore.

That's why we use burner FlyBuys/Woolworths Rewards accounts.

  • I just purchaed and the money has been taken out of my account, but no gift card received, page was loading and lagging. Is this normal? I usually receive the gift card instantly.

    • Hi. Please give True Rewards a call. They're very responsive…

For queries regarding the purchase of your Digital Gift Card, contact True Rewards on 1800 850 739 Mon-Fri 9am-5pm Syd time (excluding public holidays).

      • All goods, received in my spam folder!

        • :)

          • @tightarse: Can't seem to checkout on iPhone using Safari or Firefox. The pop up cannot scoll down.

            • @chyawala: You'll need to contact True Rewards if that's the case (details in OP), else please try a desktop browser. Please note the $100 is fast approaching OOS. Thanks!

  • What's the easiest way to spend these in store? I find it's hard to get the barcode to scan and does not allow for manual input. Woolies giftcard experience is a lot better.

    • +1

It's clunky vs Woolies. I think staff members can manually input it if it won't scan but unfortunately it does require a bit of gymnastics with the barcode scanner to get it to work sometimes.

      • +1

The flybuys card scanners work better than the barcode scanners for products.

Make sure that your phone screen is on maximum brightness.

Start with your phone close to the flybuys scanner and then slowly move the phone away from the scanner.

      • Using the Stocard app for storing the gift card barcode.
      • Using the Flybuys barcode scanner below or next to the EFTPOS terminal to scan the barcode in the Stocard app.

You will need to move your phone around to find the Flybuys barcode scanner sweet-spot, but once you’ve done it hundreds of times (like I have), you’ll get the hang of it.

I agree Woolworths has a better way of storing and spending gift cards!

  • Thanks. Still got stock of $100s as at 12:15pm.

  • Thanks OP - got $100, still available.
