      • How many displays and what resolution you can run at. If it's just the single, there is no difference. But if you get a dock and multiples then band width limitations comes in.

        • From https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/IdeaPad/IdeaPad_5_P…

          Supports up to 3 independent displays via native display and 2 external monitors; supports external monitors via HDMI® (up to 3840x2160@30Hz) or USB-C (up to 5120x2880@60Hz)

          • @[Deactivated]:

            Supports up to 3 independent displays via native display and 2 external monitors

            Yeah, if you just uses the usb c display port, hdmi, and laptop screen, then there won't be any issues.

            But I am more referring to connecting multiple just though the usb c. This is where the thunderbolt difference is. Thunderbolt docks can easily support the multiple displays. Where as usb C based dock uses display link. Fine for productivity work, but video and gaming? Not so much. It also places load on the cpu.

    • +1

      My non-Thunderbolt USB-C dock can connect to two monitors and charge my x360 through one cable.

    • AMD hasn't supported Thunderbolt yet, although I heard it's coming on the next gen.

    • Keen to purchase it from you, of course I’ll pay for shipping

  • so sad it is not 120hz i think…

    • -1

      It has an iGPU…

      • That iGPU is a smaller RX5000 GPU, it can handle some games at 120fps depending on the settings etc.

        • I know what it is. It's inferior to a rubbish MX250 or GTX750.

          Some games being CS on low at 1080p?

          I get that it's great for an iGPU. Hell, I bought one. But 120Hz: really?

          • @Viper8: It's not necessary and you will be using 60Hz most of the time, but the option is good when you are playing CSGO or Valorant which the Radeon7 Cezanne iGPU can do at 120fps.

  • +4

    thought about it since yesterday. do i need it? probably not. do i want it? yes
    woke up this morning and ordered it.
    ETA 31st Dec C&C in VIC.
    Enough time for me to cancel if something else comes along.

  • +2

    Thanks just ordered, have been on fence for a bit, and at that price i jumped

  • Hey have been looking for a laptop to do some video editing on, assuming this wouldn't be too amazing due to the integrated GFX card, however for price range looks like a bargain, any opinions?

  • +1

    Might cancel as this doesn't seem to be the earth-shattering deal it was made out to be.

    Doesn't help that I've also just bought an M1 Pro MBP recently…

    • Yeah I'm confused why this is a great deal

      During Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the dell G5 was going with 5600U and RTX 3050 / 3060 for 900/1100~

      • Might be the QHD display with 2560 x 1600 resolution.

      • Do u have a link to that?

      • Yeah, link?

        I didn't see hundreds of comments on a post here regarding…

        All I can find is some with half the HD, half the Ram and worse screens.

      • +8

        Beyond the dGPU the Dell lacks a lot of features that this laptop has got.

        Lower quality screen (1080p, low brightness, not 100% sRGB vs QHD, 350nits, 100% sRGB of the Lenovo)
        USB is limited to 5Gbps due to being Gen 1, VS 10Gbps Gen 2 of the Lenovo
        Lower quality chassis (All plastic vs all aluminium)
        Lower capacity battery (51wH vs 71+wH)
        Is heaver at 2.5kg vs 1.9kg

        You can also adjust the TDP of the 5600h on the Lenovo between battery saving, balanced and performance.

    • +1

      Agree.
      Swaying towards the cancel option too.

      Also I'm biased against officeworks. :)

  • -7

    People still buy 15.6" laptops ?

    • People expect to get work done on a 13.3? Have fun split screening that on a 1080p res

      • -1

        Whatever works for you

        But after buying a 14" Lenovo I will never go back to those chunky 15.6"s, it's world of a difference.

        • +1

          Insinuating everyone wants an ultra book is simply silly. There's a whole market out there that still want a desktop replacement for productivity and gaming, where mobility simply means moving it from one desk to another.

          You're not gonna find those on ultra books.

  • -8

    I purchased this and contemplated posting it on OzBargain on Thursday the 8th but didn't want to ruin it for others by getting it 'OzBargained' because it was such a good deal.

    • Are you talking about this deal, or Dell?

      • -2

        I've commented on this post haven't I?

    • I just checked my tracking from when I ordered and it's coming via Toll, it's already on board for delivery.

  • +1

    This is weird because it's so much better than the one they advertise in the paper for the same money. How bummed would you be if you found out about this after paying $997 for a 14" Pavillion x360 with an I3, 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD.

  • -1
  • This might be a silly question but, is there a huge difference between the 2560 x 1600 resolution compared to a 1080 resolution?

    I game on the 1080 laptop and will only be using this for productivity. Will I notice a huge difference when I game/watch videos on my 1080p laptop?

    • You can tell for productivity apps.
      Text and fonts appear shaper.

    • Not on a 16" display. The benefit will be minimal…

      • +1

        I'd say so. I work off a 13.3" 1080p with a matching 1440p portable monitor. Split screen retains alot on websites and texts are still mighty sharp albeit smaller.

        Watching videos, not so much difference. I'd imagine the same for games

  • +1

    Tried cancelling the order. Hope OW issues a refund soon !

    • How do you cancel the order?

      • +1

        There is a link in your email order confirmation.

    • Why?

      • +1

        Screen is nice, but prefer something with at least 1660Ti for light gaming. That would have more uses.
        Such as the Dell G15, or eBay during the 20% sale

        • I understand, I looked into previous deals and anything near this price had half the ram & a worse screen.

          Either way, you trade off. I get it tho, if I didn't have a PS5 I'd probably wanna do some light gaming on it.

          • @[Deactivated]: Razer with 2060 on sale earlier for a bit extra.
            MSI GF65 with 1660 went under $1k last year
            Dell G15 can be have for a bit extra and comes with GPU.
            Just have to wait for the next ebay sale.
            I too have PS5, but you can't bring your PS5 while on the road :)

            • @congo: Last year isn't today.
              Tech has gone up in value, GPUS are more expensive than ever.

              The thing is, a little more can be 20% more and I'll they've made a cut elsewhere in the laptop.
              It could be weaker CPU, ram, screen but they cut the cost somewhere to sell a laptop with a GPU around the price range.

              Just depends what you're willing to live with, or without.

              • @[Deactivated]: With tech and gaming, there are always sales.
                If you don't need it urgently, a better deals maybe around the corner.

                • +1

                  @congo: But…another deal will always be around the corner 🤣

                  • @[Deactivated]: I've got burnt too many times buy the latest tech and gaming.
                    Time to grow some will-power!

                    • @congo: Hahaha

          • +1

            @[Deactivated]: My Dell G15 had single stick of 8gb-3200mhz, cost $40 for a second stick via Amazon.

            The main issue with the Dell is the storage, not only is it 256gb (218gb usable) in a device intended to have game files on it, but you have to pay after market to unlock the second NVMe slot as they created a removable unit that screws into it so they could leave it out. I paid $42 to get a cheaper third party option from Amazon.

            $980 ended up being $1120 for +8GB RAM & +500GB NVMe upgrade, that's with finding the cheapest deals possible.

            Still worthwile for the 3050/5600H, but not a fan of the design or build quality.

            That being said, the screen which OzB said would be terrible is surprisingly good for the price category.

            • @Jimbuscus: I'm not staying this laptop is amazing, but like someone mentioned and I said…you get what you pay for and cuts are made elsewhere.

              There's some things you can't upgrade, but I get its better for gaming.
              It really depends what you want/need the laptop for.

              Personally, I don't want to pull apart my laptop…I don't know how to anyways, or incase I voided warranty. But, could be a good deal if you're willing to go through that.

  • Dang… tempted at this price point. But I'm more in the market for an ultra light laptop like LG Gram… Hmmm….

  • +2

    Similar post might have already been made but confirming:

    • The same specs at Lenovo education store (with EDUCOMM discount) is currently $1,137.
    • Live chat person wouldn't offer me a better deal and said 8+ weeks wait time for custom builds (maybe I got a dud Lenovo rep).

    Same laptop with upgrades on Lenovo edu store (with discount) currently I am getting the following prices:

    • CPU (5800H) and Screen (120Hz) = $1,318
    • CPU (5800H) and Screen (120Hz) and GPU (RTX 3050) = $1,624
    • What about 1Tb SSD and 32 gig ram with same processor and graphic card as this deal…?

      • +1

        I think it was several hundred more for the 1TB SSD so I didn't bother checking the discounted price.
        Not sure about the ram or whether that upgrade was available.

        • +1

          I checked probably $400 approx for SSD upgrade..

    • +4

      I posted a deal earlier in the year where they offered the 5800h,3050 and 120hz screen option for $1473 on the Edu site.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/636355

      AMD will most likely be launching their 6000 series mobile CPUs at CES in Jan 2022, like previous years. So the price may come down to this level to clear existing stock.

      • +1

        There is no "existing stock". They sell them before they even make them.

        • Sorry but your statement is incorrect because not all of these SKUs have been BTO.

    • Hmm you just reminded me i have access to the education store. Doesn't seem like such a fantastic deal now haha

  • Is the extra cover from OW worth the price - $169? I am assuming the 3 years cover starts after the manufacturer 1 year cover ends.

    Also, is the same model available at JB HiFi or Harvey Norman or GoodGuys (couldnt find it online)? I can get 5% discount coupons from these 3 stores after a pricematch.

    • +1

      Extra Cover provides an extended warranty for up to 3 years, including the manufacturer’s warranty, on new items purchased at Officeworks

      Whether it's worth it? It most certainly is to OW, otherwise they would not offer it. After reading through list of what is not covered I'm actually struggling to figure out what would be covered.

      Officeworks Extra Cover Plans do not cover:
      • Any part/s of Your Product that are supplied with a Manufacturer’s Warranty period of less than three (3) months;
      • Unauthorised repair/s;
      • Defects or design faults that are covered by the Manufacturer or distributor whether or not through the process of a Product recall;
      • Consequential loss of any type;
      • Costs incurred where no Mechanical or Electrical Failure is identified;
      • Normal maintenance costs;
      • Any exclusions outlined in the Manufacturer’s Warranty;
      • Reformatting of the hard disk and/or any data recovery;
      • Mechanical or Electrical Failure of Your Product caused by:
      – Product recalls;
      – Negligence, accidental or deliberate misuse or unauthorised alterations;
      – Infestations of vermin, pests or insects;
      – Accidental damage from any cause; or
      – Rust or corrosion;

      • https://www.officeworks.com.au/services/extra-cover
        Purchasing and activation:
        Purchase your Extra Cover Plan with your new applicable technology or gas-lift chair from Officeworks
        Officeworks will automatically activate your policy on your behalf
        You should keep your original receipt as proof of purchase if you need to make a later claim. Your Extra Cover policy will commence 12 months after the purchase or upon expiry of the original manufacturer's warranty, whichever occurs later.

    • +1

      assuming the 3 years cover starts after the manufacturer 1 year cover ends

      This is how Apple used to catch us out with Apple Care - people complained and now they've reworded it to 2 years instead of 3. As the 1st year runs concurrently with the manufacturer's warranty.

    • If you have Amex you should get an extra 1 year warranty (from Amex) anyway

  • if something better comes up later you can always return this for a refund if you have not opened it right?

    • I believe you can as long as it's unused and windows is not activated… Never had a problem with OW returns…

    • Hahaha I spose you can wait for boxing day and see what happens

  • I don't understand why people have an issue with OW. Never in the many years I've been buying tech from them have I ever had warranty, returns or support issues. Please enlighten me on a better bricks and mortar tech retailer???

    • +1

      Given they are now cancelling orders, I can understand why people have an issue then…

      • Clearly demand has outstripped supply or it's a pricing error. All covered by their t&c. No problem with that. They are a business after all…

  • +1

    As a uni student with a couple more years (2-3ish) to go, should I invest more $$ into a higher quality machine that will likely retain value better (eg. Macbook, ThinkPad, Yoga, XPS) or is this too great bang for buck to pass up on?

    • +4

      It depends on whether or not you think the "hold value" is going to hold true and be fair. I think this one is about $600 under priced, so a clear bargain. Keeping those extra dollars, who knows what kind of deal you can get later. It is debatable how much value an older Macbook or XPS will have, perhaps better longer term "real" value in a ThinkPad, but it might not translate to that down the track. The forever sales will mean that there will always be something available at a good price and perhaps a generation or two down the track, the products will be so much better all round. So I say, get this now, enjoy it, look after it and hold off a next purchase as long as possible or until there is a really good deal that you can't pass up. People spend more on mobiles than this laptop's price today.

  • Is this laptop good for gaming? Like those epic free gmae

    • Probably just light gaming at lower res, 1920x1200 or maybe even less. Doubt the integrated can run much at 2560x1600

    • +2

      I posted this link on page 1 of this laptop with 20+ games at 1080p. Should have no issues with exports titles and older games as mentioned before.

  • Hey everyone - any hacks to get the lenovo edu store discounts when not a student and dont have any student friends. wanted to checkout upgrade options of this model for a better processor and/or graphics card thanks

    • If you go up someone did try those options

    Just got a text it's arriving today so a day early. I ordered on Thursday before it was posted here.

    • I just checked, the backorder is now back to 10 of Jan. Was the 24th on the initial scree, then 31st checking out. Now online tracking is showing the 10th.

      (Although I did cancel my initial paypal order then made a credit card order to allow for easier returns, if needed. Paypal orders needs to be sent back, while card orders can be returned in store)

  • GG has 10% CB today
    It could be worth cancelling the order, and reordering to save $90+

    Date would push back from 20th December to January 10th etc

    • +1

      GG has this model?

      • Sorry! I don't know why I had a brain fart that big! Silly me! I got confused.

  • Ooh dang. Went to buy for a manager at work and it's totally out of stock in Brisbane :-\ Shame.

  • Dang this thing is heavy! No power so charging it up now, it feels really solid though.

    • compared to what though? what were you using before this? I think it would be ideal in a docked scenario.

    • +1

      An extra 500g on most other Ultrabooks? Lift some weights.

      • looks like he is the only one that received the laptop given you ordered well before it was published in ozb hhaha

  • Anyone else's delivery estimate just become sooner? Mine was 10th Jan, now saying 17-24 December!

    • Same, checked earlier today, it dragged out to 10/1, checked again, its now 17/12.

      • Update, just received a refund… Price error?

    • +1

      Mine got cancelled as unable to source it, I am in QLD.

  • +1

    Received an update about delivery today. I thought it was a price error but turns out to be a very good deal.

    • +1

      Lucky you, mines been cancelled

    • I got an update about delivery too, and then shortly after got an cancellation email

  • Anyone know if the iGPU is capable of outputting >=120HZ to an external monitor in say 1080p and/or 1440p?

    Not for any fancy gaming, just want to pair it with my Dell 1440p@120-165hz if possible.

  • I ordered very early for delivery but just got the cancellation email with refund notice

    • -2

      Yep same. Obviously a price error.

    • Me too

  • Did anyone actually receive their laptop? Just had my money refunded
