Definitely a bargain. I don't wanna line Gerry's pockets though.

  • +33

Great deal and find from OP. Hopefully someone other than HN offer this.

But………I'm not going to give that grub Gerry Harvey any of my money. People don't forget how he took taxpayer funded Jobkeeper money and didn't return it even though he may ridiculous profits.
I refuse to buy absolutely anything from HN now purely because of this.

    • +3

True, but so did many, many, many others. Why single them out… hurts you more than it hurts them.

      • +42

I still haven't forgotten his mandate to government to introduce GST on imported goods. That one hurt me and I will not support him.

        • +2

It still hurts everytime I order on AliExpress.

      • +13

He also lobbied for gst on all imported goods. Who wouldn't be pissed to see tax on a $1 item from aliexpress

        • +6

Yes, those 10c were most certainly a dealbreaker for me, I no longer buy $1.10 cables from Aliexpress, I buy them for $9.95 in Officeworks instead and saving 10c.

          • +1

            @[Deactivated]: It’s the principle

            • -3

@hashtagbargain: The principle of not paying taxes because you bought the item overseas?

            • -1

@hashtagbargain: My fiends in Belgium paying 21% VAT on imported goods plus 18 EUR postal fees on top of it, irrespective if it was a cable or mobile phone. It's about the same in UK too.

So let's just say that 10% is not a big deal and it could have been much-much worse.

      • +3

True and I do the same to other companies like HN. They're a mass merchant and anything they sell, I can easily get elsewhere. It's rare you see something that's exclusive to them.

    • +1

so did qantas and lots of other organisations ….. scomo and friedemberg are to blame ….they made a stupid offer …they could have just offered. tax relief instead of real cash ….

    • +6

Gerry takes money from the government, and I guess ultimately tax payers. Bad for sure. Amazon however withholds tips from its workers already some of the poorer people in society…and forces drivers to pee on bottles. Pretty sure that's the more scummy thing to do. And they've been doing it for years!

    • I agree with you but I am 2 minds about this. On the one hand, boycotting HN will obviously give less to Gerry however the employees their will suffer the most in the long run and could potentially be without a job. They are trying to make a living like all of us irrespective of the politics.

      • Harvey Norman managers earn big apparently.

      • -1

Still $16m owing. Goes to show how arrogant he is about it.

    • +3

@ph81 Then you could always try to price-match/beat this item at another strore, TGG, JB HiFi OfficeWorks etc,
You could then SMS your receipt to Gerry Harvey with the message "Suck my balls GST Gerry"!!

      • Lol…safe to say Gerry just got OzB!! 😂😂👍👍

  • Where does it say it is IPS panel?

  • +11

no deal …done with harvey norman

  • +1

Definitely a great deal OP, I was expecting around the $800-$900 range with this, for $698 definitely a steal!

  • +6

HN is the reason we have to pay import GST for stuff that we should have not, the more sales they run means the boycotting is working on them harder

  • Is 8gb ram enough?
Is this one of the best computer deals of this year? (Apart from being from Gerry Harvey…)

  • How does this compare ? 32gb Optane memory boost ?

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/hp-15-6-inch-i5-1135g7-8gb-5…

    • +3

      Is optane still a thing?

      • Optane is huge in servers, but in a DIMM form factor, not sure what'd be purpose of it in laptops.

        • for $200 extra, I would rather just upgrade the RAM on the laptop.

      • not since PCIE SSD became mainstream … optane really tried to get uptake to make HDD perform e.g act as non volatile cache then SSD came along and prices dropped

        • I just worked few days back on a server where most of the RAM was replaced by Optane DIMMs, half a terabyte of them and they performed, well, just like a RAM. Absolutely no comparison to even fastest NVMe SSDs.

    • Definitely not worth the premium over this.

  • +2

can we do price beat in officeworks or other place???

  • +12
    • +1

which one is better? Your link shows an i5-1155G7, this one is an i5-1135G7. Yours has a higher number so does that mean it's a faster CPU? Both 11th gen

      • +3

Yes, 3200mhz vs 2666mhz RAM as well

    • I think this has only Wifi5 whereas the one OP posted has Wifi6

      • +6

The faster ram is the winner….

    • Does this one have 8GB vs 2x4GB RAM from OP? meaning there is a spare slot?

      • +1

Both show 2x4GB on the HP page.
Sometimes this can't be trusted though.

    • +1

Interesting; i wonder why they didn't include wifi6 when the CPU is newer in the 1155g7 model

      • who know's ay, who knows!

  • Decent screen for outdoor use?

    • +2

not really, this is 250 nits

      • +2

Thanks. I think I'm looking for a unicorn, lol

    • +7

Put a towel or blanket over your head and the screen when outdoors, problem solved :p

      • +1

Elegant, simple solution. I like it.

  • I have no intention of doing this, just wondering. This has far better specs than you get in a Chromebook for the same price. How close to Chromebook could you get by converting this?

    https://www.pcworld.com/article/393375/how-to-turn-a-laptop-…

    • It's a question of drivers, most Chromebooks converted to laptops have various devices non-functional. I'd imagine going other way, for whatever unknown to me reason, would be the same. You can run ChromeOS in VirtualBox if you need too.

    • +1

Not sure there are a lot of people bothering with Chromebooks. I won a Dell Latitude 7410 Chromebook Enterprise 2 in 1 Chromebook with 3-year warranty from Dell and there has been no interest in the second-hand market for it. If I could run MS Office on it might have had some use.

  • +1

5% discount Harvey Norman egift cards using the Suncorp app.

  • Can the RAM be extended on this one?

  • Is the memory or hard drive expandable?

    • Yes to both

  • Same specs as the Acer Aspire that was for sale for $648 on Black Friday.

    • +1

HP better quality than Acer Aspire 5? Maybe worth the extra $50?

      • My Acer Aspire 5 fall apart on me, first went the corners then the mouse pad kept stopping, wasn't the drivers but the worst thing was the fan… that was loud plus the bottom screws fell out as well all this in JUST under 1 year.

        • -1

I have had the opposite experience. I used my Aspire 5 for 7 years for HEAVY usage. Got two degrees with it, rendered a ton of stuff, installed many games, installed many high usage software, ran multiple tabs every single day…actually it didn't die, I just wanted something more 'fresh'.

Whereas I have had two HPs with terrible fans and quality.

The keyboard on the acer did have issues but I suspect it was mostly due to how I used it. Not cleaning the keys, using the keyboard sporadically etc. I didn't care since I used a mechanical keyboard.

Overall I stay away from HP and go for Dell and Lenovo, with a new found respect for Acer.

          • @rizza: I've had one HP, that kept on going back to the repair shop. Now I own an Lenovo laptop after the aspire broke and it's great to say it's only a Core I3.

  • Maybe. Acer seems to work fine so far.

  • Thanks OP, this is exactly what I was looking for. Looks like similar config with MS Surface go on sale at the JBHIFI but this is cheaper.

  • Thanks OP….I'm here for a bargain and a bargain is what I got thanks to you.

  • -3

Great deal. Nobody has done more to get quality cheap laptops to school kids than Gerry Harvey

    • +1

We all hope you will sponsor his gravestone and his Royal postmortem Assent to be the forever God of Education?

    • +1

      /s ?

  • +1

    Thunderbolt port?

    • It's all in the specs:

      External ports
      1 SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 5Gbps signaling rate; 2 SuperSpeed USB Type-A 5Gbps signaling rate; 1 HDMI 1.4b; 1 AC smart pin; 1 headphone/microphone combo

      • So Thunderbolt 1 then?

        • -2

          No, Thunderbolt 5

        • +1

          LOL it's Thunderbolt 0 and USB-C

  • How is this compared to the Acer Swift 3 14-inch i5-1135G7/8GB/512GB SSD Laptop ?

    This has Evo processor
    Double the space

The only downside is 14" screen and $100 price diff only.

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-swift-3-14-inch-i5-1135…

    • Acer is more portable so more suitable for school. However I doubt the RAM can be upgraded

    • I bought the above Acer Swift last Black Friday for my kid who starts high school next year. I think they're quite similar in processor and RAM but it has bigger storage (512Gb vs 256Gb), lighter (1.2kg vs 1.7kg) and longer battery life (up to 14 hours vs up to 9 hours). But I really wish that the Acer has i5-1155G7 instead of i5-1135G7 (even the kid really won't need that much)

  • Doesn't seem to support USB-C charging. Can anyone confirm?

    • +2

Just got the other variant with i5-1155G7 , it’s a normal charging port and not usb C

  • Wait is this 2 in 1 as one of the photos shows it can bend 360?

    • Not 2 in 1 by design. Screen will spin 370 with enough force.

The image if for windows hello

  • +1

Thanks OP, bought the i5-1155G7 model, with Suncorp discount it ended up being $665.

    • Delivered?

      • Click and collect

        • Driving is a pain ay

  • Struggling to work out if the exact same model is available at good guys or jb hifi as I previously bought discounted gift vouchers and would try get a price match. Can anyone help with this please?
    TIA

    • I tried to do that , found one model with good guys with similar specs and called for price match .but they declined saying it has to be the exact model. So pulled the trigger on this one.

      • That’s a shame, thanks for the response

      • yeah, it's a shame they play dirty cards. They are pretty much similar just model differences and I think they get different models from suppliers so it will be hard for the consumer to price match.

  • how easy is it to upgrade the hard drive?
    Do i just search for a larger size PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD
    would the below be ok?
    https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/hard-drives-&-ssds/ssd-m…

  • does anyone know how to get a discounted HN gift card to purchase this ???

    • +1

You can buy HN Gift cards from Shopback mobile app for 4.5% cashback.
I read somewhere not sure that we can only redeem 4 gift cards on HN online..
I bought the below and redeemed on HN online. Worked well :)
      250$+250$+100$+100$

      Got 31.5$ cashback

Thanks OP btw! good find :)

      • thanks buddy that's very helpful.

  • This or wait for something better on Boxing day

    • Bit of a gamble. I bought 2 X laptops today (1 was this one) because sometimes boxing day sales are pretty ordinary. Either way tech prices will probly increase next yr anyway due to inflation/shortages so you probably won't lose.
