  • Ok so a hack to earn points would potentially BPay lots and lots of small amounts to pay off a credit card bill or some other bill?
Or I wonder if there's any other bank account that you can schedule to direct debit from this Virgin account every day. Tiny amount of points though 8 X 30 days is still only 240 points a month. Need a way to script it

    Update:
So looks like you can set up auto recurring BPay payments at a weekly interval. So set up maybe 10 or so paying 50c to earn 80 points per week or 240 points per month

    Update 2:
Minimum $1 BPay BUT you can schedule multiple in parallel. Eg 10 * $1 each week to the same BPay! Win!!!

Doing lots of small transactions will likely get your account shut down. At least that's what happened when people tried the same thing with Bankwest.

      • +4

Hah got a caution email about gaming the system. Pretty quick to pull me up on ten $1 transactions

        • you got an email from Virgin bank already?

        • Not sure how it would go, but adding a third bank account may help. Not automated, but add money to Revolut from the card (minimum is $25). Transfer from Revolut to bank of choice. Transfer back to Virgin. If you're not so poor as to only have $25 to play with you could just transfer $350 to Virgin, top up Revolut twice per day and either spend from Revolut or transfer it to another account.

Don't think 16 points per day is really worth it though. Even automated, you'd probably want it to be over 200 points ($1) per day to bother. At the point that you're doing it 25 times per day it's going to be suspicious. Even if you manage to create a chain with trusted friends so the original money wasn't coming from your account with another bank to make it more believable.

Catalogue delivery may pay better for less effort.

    • They will block your access to points.

  • Signed up and bought a $100 Prezzee gift card on Sun 24/04. 20,008 points arrived today, on Wed 27/04.

    • I did the same exact thing. However I was a old customer signing up again. Maybe that’s why I haven’t received any points at all

As someone who has been with Virgin for coming up close to a year now, be prepared for a tedious, time consuming and very subpar experience.

    • Customer service is near impossible to get hold of (they refer you to live chat which takes forever to get a response).
    • Their app is super bloated. Very nice UI but it has a loading icon for almost every screen change within your accounts (definitely not fast or responsive).
    • You can only access your account via their app - not from a website. So if their app goes down, which it has the last couple of days with painfully long load times, good luck getting access to your money.
    • They've recently reduced their 1.35% interest rate to 1%. To get the bonus rate, you need to lock your savings account, and give them 31 days notice before they will allow you to access. So you can't quickly shift funds out of savings if desperately needing them.
    • Their customer service (they use BoQ since that is who backs them) is quite a struggle. They really don't care much about their customers. When I asked them yesterday if I can't log into my account, how do I access my money, the response was simply "Yeah, you can't, sorry." And they guy knew there was an outage with their app, but all he could tell me was "It might have something to do with logging in or using the app, so if that's what you're experiencing, it's the same bug".

Needless to say, I'm pulling the plug once my interest gets paid out on the 1st and finding a new home for my banking.

    • I agree with you

    • -1

good luck getting access to your money.

Your digital/physical bank cards should still work regardless of any app outages?

      • -1

Yeah cards are fine. But if you need to move money around or make a payment, you're dead in the water.

    • Only used Virgin Money briefly for this promo. While using it I definitely felt the app took a long time loading compared to other bank apps…

      • Not as slow and bad as Citi's app
Citi way too frequently asks for 2FA for basic interactions

        • +4

Citi app is painful! Their obsession with enforcing 2FA is just one of the many steps they take towards ensuring a negative customer experience.

          Need to log in? 2FA
Need to make a payment? 2FA
Need to access a statement? 2FA

@KangaDrew: yep. HSBC is also getting there when it comes to being overly cautious and slow non-intuitive app

            • +1

@payton: Have accounts with both Citi and HSBC and couldn't agree more. I understand importance of security but they've taken it to a whole new level.

  • Anyone know how to close the account? Need to call them?

    • +1

I could do it myself from the App

      • Yep , found it.

        • Where in the app do I close my account? Thanks

          • @nomnomnom: Click into your go account, then top right corner there’s a small circle with 3 dots …
Click that and one of the options is Close Account.

  • +1

Thanks op got $110 Amazon gift card from the 20k points

    • how long did you receive the bonus points?

  • Can the $100 spend be split into more than one transaction to qualify for the points?

    • +1

Yes. There is no rule that required you to spend $100 in one transaction.

  • -1

As far as I understand, the $100 spending as in total amount and can be splitted into multiple purchases, right?

  • Referred a mate, but his card is not showing up in the VM app. Anyone else has this?

    • Got similar issue when referring a family member. Failed in the last step of ID verification but got the temp access code.

Was able to use the access code to login the app but no accounts showed up.

Gave it up but after a few days got email saying account was ready. Logged in and can see the accounts there.

Both of us got the points later.

      • Its weird, because his account is there and usable, just no virtual card

      • How long did it take for the referral points to hit? I’ve referred quite a few friends and also reached the $100 but still no points

    • Yes I had this same issue on my account too (whilst my wife worked as expected).
I had to endure a long wait to talk to a human, and her feedback was that I was one of those hit by a "snag" in the system, and solution was to close that account and open a new one within the app. I did that whilst she was on the call, and that new one worked perfectly.

  • anyone having issues with their points not been credited? I have spent now close to $200, but not received a single point. thanks

    • +1

Took 2 to 3 business days for the points to be credited for me.

  • Same

  • If you have previously held a virgin money account can you still get the points?

  • -1

    do cashouts at woolies/coles count?

  • So my account just went into negative $100 because it finally took the money out from Revolut but still shows the pending transaction in my account so I've been charged twice for the one transaction.
Waiting on the phone for 20 mins going to hang up.
What's the best way to contact them?

    • +2

      Via phone.
I tried contacting them via chat. No reply for 2 days.

  • For some reason my access to the app was locked.

  • I referred two people but only received 5k referral bonus for one of them… The person who I haven't yet received a referral bonus for, received his 20k signup bonus points on 29th of April.

Guess I'll wait a few more days before I call up Virgin Money…

    • The person needs to have spent $100 for you to receive the referral bonus.

      • Yes, he did. I did say he already received his 20k signup bonus points. So the purchase he made was over $100, has already updated from pending transaction to completed and he got his points a few days after that.

I sent Virgin Money an email about the missing referral bonus points. Will see how long they take to reply back otherwise I'll call them.

  • +1

Today I scored 5K from points from a random referral - very grateful to the person who picked me out of a hat!

  • Do I have to wait until my card arrives? I wanted to use this for a purchase on the apple store

    • You can add your card to Apple Pay and use it before the physical card arrives in the mail.

      • Does it work on their website though?

        • Yes, Apple supports Apple Pay.

  • I claimed a gift card around the start of this month and my account balance is $0.00
I haven't opened the app since, but remembered I wanted to log in and close the accounts/release the PayID.

I'm now getting that stupid error where it says access on my device has been locked. Cleared app data and tried logging in again, same. I guess that means I will have to call them again and wait on hold for ages.

    Anyone else had this happen?

  • Anyone received the 20k bonus points recently. The transaction was settled on 10th May but I am still waiting for the points. The first account I opened does not have a virtual card associated with it, so I have to open a new go account, and the card showed up.

    • +1

I was in the same situation as you - had to create a 2nd go account for the virtual card to show up (their Helpdesk suggested this, as it was apparently a known issue).

I spent my $100 on 1 May, and the bonus points didn't show up until 9 May, but interestingly the comments state "Manual adjustment +20,000".

I can only suggest you ring them up if you haven't seen the 20k points by now.

      • Thanks man, did you call them up or the points show up itself after a week? I just sent them an email.

        • I called them up when my virtual card never appeared (nor the physical one) after a week. That’s when they told me to just create a new one whilst on the phone with them. They did say they’ll make a note about the 20k points, so maybe that’s why mine came through as a manual adjustment?

  • +2

Hey all, I was comparing the cashback rate of this with the HSBC 2% and looks like the breakeven point is between $1.8 to $2.2 (depends on whether you want giftcards or direct cashback with Virgin Rewards). That means for purchases between $2.2 to $100, you will get more return with HSBC. Hope this helps.

  • -1

So I was a previous customer , joined back with them , only got 8 points for spending $100 and they replied to me and said I was not entitled to 20000 points as I was a previous customer . I closed my account again for the 2nd time. Crap service as well.

    • -1

Errr what did you expect? You tried to defraud a bank. Good luck!

  • Just signed up, used someones refer a friend code above. Thanks

  • I'm still missing the 5k points for referring someone about 3 weeks ago.

I contacted Virgin Money on [email protected] last Weds (that's the email I saw on their website). Followed up today and their reply was:
Please contact Virgin Money on the below link as we only assist with customers in Hardship.
    https://virginmoney.com.au/search-results/?keyword=velocity+…

That link is just a bunch of search results. I'm confused how exactly they want me to contact them…

Has anyone successfully contacted them through email for help, is there another email address I can use? Or is calling them the only way to reach the right Virgin Money support team?

    • So I ended up calling them, was on hold for about 50 min. The VM Support person I spoke to (Jermone) told he can't see a pending referral and asked me if the person used my referral link and I answered yes. I told VM Support that he got their 20k signup bonus a couple of weeks ago but I haven't received my 5k referral bonus. However, the person who I referred did experience a technical issue (he tried logging into the app before his account was ready in the backend supposedly) so that's why I didn't automatically get credited the points.

But VM Support was adamant that the person I referred has to raise the inquiry, and that I can't do anything more even though it's my missing points…. So I have to get person I referred to raise this issue so that I can get points…WTF. So now I'll be creating hassle for that person just to try get me the my missing points. Sigh.

  • Registered 2 weeks ago, had to go to Aus post to get theID verification. Spent $100 last week via Apple Pay. Hoping to get 20k + 1700 bonus points from the other deal

  • Forgot to use the referral link as I'm a newbie but still happy with 20,000 points which was credited in 4 business days.

    • My understanding is that you won't get the additional 5k points as referee because 5k is only for referer. Happy to be proved wrong. Can someone confirm receiving extra 5k points as referee? Thanks.

  • Anyone know if this card has currency conversion fees for international purchases?

    • +1

2.5% for transactions in a foreign currency. Atm withdrawal fees overseas too. This is going to be a domestic card only.

  • Worst customer service ever. Cant access the app without contacting the help line and cant get through to the helpline for ages. Finally got thru and was told its a technical issue and they will raise a ticket to investigate so more waiting until they respond. Still have not received the physical card after 1 week which I cant use anyway cos need app access. Gonna wait 3 more weeks then close the account since its useless to get the promo offer after 30 days. Trouble is having to wait again on the help line to close it. What a screwed up company.

  • How long does it take to receive points? spent 150 but 0 points

    • +1

Two business days for my initial transaction ($100+).

  • I applied and login to my VM app without any problems. A few days later my partner decided to apply. After applied online he couldn't download Virgin Money app. In the end he used my phone to login the app. Now I can't login. It seems Virgin Money app doesn't allow you switching users like other banking apps. If only we knew beforehand.

Anyone has same experience or suggestions to get around this? Thanks.

    • Delete the app, redownload and login again

      • Thanks. Have done that but don't want to keep on doing that.

    • suggestions to get around this?

Don't use Virgin Money other than to get the sign up bonus.

Alternatively, do you have any tablets you can try downloading the app on? Or a kid's phone? You need a 6 digit pin to access the app, so not a huge risk.

      • Thank you for your advice. Since my partner used my phone to login so I will just wait till he receive his physical card then activate and use it to spend $100. I don't want to keep on switching account using the same phone too often. I worry they might lock our accounts.

Unfortunately don't have a tablet and kids. So not much choices left apart from getting a new phone.

I have added my Virgin Money card to Google pay then used Revolut like some other people suggested. But I haven't login yet to see if spending of $100 via Revolut qualify for 20000 points. I knew it worked for some people in April or early May, but not sure now.

        Hope someone can confirm.

  • Any restrictions on what is counted towards $100? Can I buy a gift card for $100.

    • I did, and it worked at the time (about a month ago). No reason to suggest anything has changed.

  • Does anyone know if Revolut still work? Thanks.

  • +1

Be careful with these guys, Virgin Money has locked my account for 2 months now and I can't access my savings.

They ignore emails and make you call them over the phone where they put you on hold for an hour only to say they will get back to you which they never do.

At this point I have to contact the financial ombudsman to get my money back. I have read about this happening to a few other people.

    • +2

Same lmao though I've not even put any money into it yet. Tried calling them multiple times and waited on hold upwards of an hour on every occasion. (profanity) these jokers.

    • Mind me asking why they locked your account. This is so worrying.

      • They didn't give any reason. It was just locked randomly.
While it's locked I also get 0% interest, I will never trust them with any money again.

        • Thanks.

  • How long does it take to receive physical card?

    • +1

Mine just arrived today. Applied on 24 May.

  • +1

Can't even register on the app. Waited hours at the call centre and no one picks up. Stuff the bonus points. Gonna close my account now or will not get my money out.

  • Looks like the referral is still available but only 5000 points now instead of 20000.

    • It's only 5k now unless you're talking about something else?

    • Referral has been 5000 since the start of the campaign. The 20000 was for the minimum spend, and expired at the end of May, as described in the OP.

  • Does anyone know if using de debit card via PayPal count as eligible spending? Thanks.

  • Got the sign up bonus and digital wallet bonus a few days after meeting requirements
    Easy

    • Do you know if payment to Revolut by Google Pay qualify for digital wallet bonus? Thanks.

  • My rewards points haven't been updated since 1st Jun despite all payments have been settled. Does anyone have the same issue?
