My father uses one of these for 'everything'. He's one of those people who does everything online; basicallyy no offline apps. Streams 1080p youtube without smashing the CPU, and an SSD really does make it feel 'as new'.

    I'd recommend them.

    • +3

SSD really does make it feel 'as new'.

SSD makes just about anything feel 'new'. So if you don't have a SSD and your puter is feeling a bit slow, get one!!

  • good for kids

However, if you want something a bit more powerful and future proof, aim for the 8th Gen refurbs

    • +5

At this price, If it meets your requirements, and you need something now/soon, better to get this one than thinking about future proofing.

8th Gen and beyond will become cheaper in the future, no need to proof now. :D

    • +2

Good luck getting a 8th Gen for $93. They are in high demand for Windows 11 (official) requirement.

    • good for kids

Not if they care about the aesthetics of the case because all their friends have RGB lit clear side panels

  • +18

Considering this for the old man and the mother in law so they stop asking me why their PC is slow I can just placebo it out of them with a "brand new PC"

      • +13

50/20 NBN link is plenty if it's just for Hotmail use and basic streaming by the way. Your ping time to the US servers is not going to change whether you're on NBN 50/20 or 1000/40, it will be the exact same ping. Emails aren't generally large file sizes either, so download speed isn't to take into account.

The PC above with an SSD is enough for general use cases. Of course, it's not as fast, powerful, or as efficient as newer devices.

      • +1

None of the above is true at all.

Hotmail loads instantly for me even on tethered 4G.

And they'd be connecting to azure in Sydney. But even if they weren't, latency connecting to the US wouldn't be perceivable.

If hotmail is loading slowly, it's something to do with the PC. Too much crap running in the background, not enough RAM, etc.

        • +1

If hotmail is loading slowly, it's something to do with the PC.

Exactly. It's most probably the Javascript engine, which slows down because either other tabs are doing similar things, or bloatware is running in the background.

    • Yep, recommended.

The ones my parents use only have 4GB of RAM, and work wonders.

I'm using Windows 10 Ameliorated Edition, Firefox browser limited to 3 processes with the uBlock plugin for no ads on youtube, and I use 1.1.1.1 as my DNS so their internet is almost as fast as local :D

  • +3

Good just for basic Google Doc Suite usage?

    • +7

(profanity) yes. I use a 3470 as my daily driver. No issues with running heaps of office programs, multiple web browsers, music player, GIMP, GIS, etc at once.

    • +3

For sure, we have an Acer SFF running on Q8400 that handles all browser based activities very smoothly.

Only upgrade was SSD and Windows 10.

    • Thank you both. And assuming it doesn't have WiFi by the looks of it?

      • Doesn’t look like it does have wi-fi but the seller has a usb wifi dongle for $25 that could be used.

    • +3

Very capable machine for the money. Will do any normal day to day desktop / office computing. Won't like gaming much and not ideal for 4k playback. But perfectly good user experience for the basics.

  • Would this have enough grunt to do PS1/PS2/Gamecube emulation?
    Sorry, I'm CPU illiterate!

    • -5

PS1/PS2 should be fine. Dolphin (Gamecube/Wii) will run, but will not be like a real Wii on this system.

      • Cheers!

      • +4

Dolphin will run better than PCSX2 actually.

          • +8

            @bio:

I have never actually used Dolphin.

So why on earth would you give advice to someone if you don't know what you're talking about?

            Dolphin is less demanding PCSX2.

As for if this PC would run either, I don't really follow their developments closely any more, I would expect a GPU would be required, but I'm not certain, so I won't give any definitive advice because giving incorrect help isn't helpful.

            • @PainToad:

So why on earth would you give advice to someone if you don't know what you're talking about?

I meant I haven't used Dolphin for emulating Wii; but fair point.

          • @bio: Dolphin will run a lot more easily than PCSX2, whether it's emulating gamecube or wii.
Dolphin is one of the most well optimized emulators out there.
I can even run wii games at full speed on my phone using dolphin.

I love PCSX2 but the PS2 was a complicated best and needs a lot more power to emulate.

    • -3

Meh it's a pretty old CPU with dated integrated gfx. You may get away with it but it would be a better proposition with newer CPU or a dedicated GPU.

      • +2

        Username checks out.

PS: My first computer was a 48K Speccy.

        • Yes those were the days. 1kb ram. 16kb rom. Monochrome gfx. No sound. They don't make em like that anymore. ;)

        • Me too! God I loved that computer, it was 1983 though :D

      • -3

FFS it is $93 with included Windows 10. What do you expect?

        • +1

"FFS" he's answer someones question regarding a specific use case. Price means nothing if it's not going to do what Fybre wants it to do.

        • I didn't say it was a bad Machin. The deal is great. What I said was for the use case they propose it is probably not ideal. No point spending $93, getting halfway through Zelda, then finding the frame rate drops to 10 and you have to shell out another $100 for a dedicated card.

    • +2

Yep, I have one of these with a 1050ti and 1TB SSD for my arcade cabinet running through launchbox. I have 30+ emulators. PS3, Xbox 360 and TeknoParrot even runs well on it.

    • You can also look into "Geforce Now". Will let you "stream" full pc games as long as your internet is up to scratch.

      • +1

How does streaming "full pc games" help him with PS1/PS2/Gamecube emulation?

  • +4

    Great priced budget PC

  • Wonder if could disassemble it and retrofit for NAS purpose

    • +4

Why do you need to retrofit? Throw a HDD and it's a NAS as is.

      • +1

True, but with costing you more for electricity in compare to a real NAS

        • +1

Not really more power consumption if you can get a low power CPU like 3770T or Xeon E3 1265L v3. Much better potential than J4125

          • @wt860: Just use intel XTU and underclock it if you are worried about power consumption. It will use the same idle power consumption regardless. Replacing the CPU would be a waste of money.

    • +1

IIRC only three sata ports, two sata power connectors and one HDD bay. You can get creative with the sheet metal inside the computer, and rip out the dvd drive but its not exactly great last time I tried to turn one of these into a NAS

edit: also if my memory isn't failing me, you can't just drop another HDD in the second 'slot' under the PSU, its wider than a hdd and needs HPs standoff screws

  • +1

Are these okay to throw in a low profile 1650 into them?

    • +2

At least an equivalent of 8th gen or more would be alright, for this one, I would not!

    • +1

has to be low profile in width rather than length…EVGA GeForce GT 1030 SC was fit perfectly previously

  • +3

My Pc is i5-4xxx, it is enough for me. 90% I just use it to watch movie, web browsing. I am a software developer. It is enough for me to do the personal project.

    • +5

I have a similar, refurbished i7-4790 with 16GB of RAM and it's more than enough to develop software.

CPU speeds have really stagnated for the last 10 years: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-4790-vs-…

      • I don't understand anything from that site. I suggest this one from PassMark that uses benchmark data:

        https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i7-12700K-vs-Inte…

        • I agree that one is cleaner, but I find the "effective speed" benchmark more relevant for such comparisons than raw CPU speed comparisons. The CPU itself may be 4.8x as fast (according to the CPU benchmark in your link), but a PC built around that CPU is only 47% faster in real world scenarios.

    • can your cpu play 4k 10 bit hevc hdr in kodi without any issues (with needing an external GPU) etc?

if not, what lowest cpu in regards to these SFF type of pcs ie dell, HP etc that can do this?

      • My cpu can’t play YouTube 4K smoothly. Can’t answer your question.

  • This will be fine for people doing light internet browsing, but then again so will a raspberry pi 4b

    • +6

This will perform a lot better than a raspberry pi 4

      • +4

        Several times better.

    • +3

      doing light internet browsing

Lol people seems to think anything older than a few years is junk. This will do almost everything a home user would want except video editing and gaming.

  • +2

Holy cow that's cheap for a PC. My dad bought be a 286 for $3000 back then…

  • Just add a NIC and its a good pfsense/opnsense box

    • It has an Ethernet port at the back.. or is NIC something else?

      • +1

You would need as least 2 Ethernet port if you use it for router

        • Pfft - Router on a stick and/or VLAN.

        • ah its for my auntie/uncle computer replacement so they would just be connecting the ethernet cable from comp to router

  • What would be the idle power consumption of this box?

    • Perhaps around 30w when running. Depends what is running in the background or do you mean when in Standby?.

      • No screen, but running

        • Yeap, about 30w so. I have one running as a Server.

  • +1

Sounds like a candidate for Chromebook Flex

  • Would this work well for a home server? I've been thinking of getting something to practice/tinker with a server for home assistant, Plex etc. And want something cheap… Would this be suitable or would I be better off with a rasp pi? (Or something else entirely)
Is it a small form factor? I really like those mini PC's that go and Lenovo have but they're 300+ for barebones

    • +2

Yes it'd do well as a server, though power usage would be a bit higher than a pi (tens of watts instead of single digits). The CPU is of the range where it may or may not handle high-res Plex transcoding that well, since it can be very intensive, but if you're just serving media without transcoding it would be golden for sure.

    • The real issue is the PSU - it limits how many HDDs you can add, and it's proprietary so you can't replace it (unless you find an ATX adapter). It's also old…

The rest of the parts will do fine, the RAM may be flakey but you can test that as soon as you get it and get it swapped with your 3 month warranty

  • +4

Windows alone costs more than this PC.

  • +1

Cheap as chips for everyday use at $91.30, delivered.
Downside is that the CPU TDP is a bit high at 77W, so not really ideal for something that would run 24x7.

  • +1

How come nobody ever mentions putting Linux Mint (or other versions) on old computers like this?

    • +1

Because Windows still runs fine on them. If Linux is your cuppa, then it will also run fine.

    • +1

I put Linux Mint on my Optiplex and it's been great.

    • -2

      Nah Fedora is better

      • +1

        I prefer Nadal.

        • Both better than KyrgiOS.

  • Anyone know if a cheap gfx card can be out into this to make it 4k capable? Or will the CPU be a bottleneck?

    • For general use and watching content in 4k, sure. I certainly wouldn't be looking at this for 4k gaming though.

    • +1

No the CPU is very capable. The problem is used SFF GPUs are still too expensive, otherwise a GT 730 would be ideal - but that should be a $30 graphics card, not a $150 card

  • Bargain

  • Very nice! Thanks op.

  • Geez, this is such a price that I would buy to replace Pi 3B I use as a server, and if it is no good you just bin it. So cheap.

  • +1

Free delivery to eastern states, but cost $20 postage to WA - sadly.

    • $15.00 to rural Vic, still a good deal though

  • Where are you getting $91/$93 from? It’s showing $130 for me (plus post to Tas but that’s irrelevant) minus 17% for the eBay plus code is $107.90. Am I doing something wrong?

    • They changed the price

  • Looks like the deal has ended. Now $130, $110.50/$107.90 discount price

  • I'm getting a techfast gaming PC. Is it worth getting one of these for the Windows 10?

    • +1

nope - windows is practically free anyway just not activated…….then just look out for some of the more frowned upon methods

  • +4

This is a great machine, i’m a software engineer and use it for everything from coding, 3d printing, zbrush 3d modelling, sketchup etc. i have 16GB of ram on mine, ssd drive and a gtx1650 gpu that drives dual 4k monitors. it flies.
