Sad panda is sad… what happened to 12 month deals feel like they’re always 24 month now for anything decent

    • +1

What would you want? A $1200 voucher for a 12 month contract with $99 monthly?

    • +4

And this was a 12month plan
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/708052

Just not $500 or $600 gc like it used to be

      • Was just going to mention this…

Just wait for the next 12 month deal. For sure will be before October

      • I think this use to be just a black friday sale.

        • Last time it was end of June

  • +21

Been working from home ever since COVID. All these data means nothing to me cos I’m just using my WIFI 90% off the time

    • +6

These plans could replace some people's wifi. Bet it would be a lot faster too.

      • +1

Maybe. That’s if they could work out a cost benefit of doing so.

I’m paying $40/month which includes 60GB. Best thing is that I have unlimited International calls, local SMS and calls.

Paying $59/mth x 24 is $1416 which exceeds the value gift card, which the plans doesn’t add anything more than I need.

        • What plan you on?

        • I’ve been on this XL plan for over 7 years.

          $40/month
          Unlimited international calls
Unlimited local calls, mobile and SMS
          60GB data

        • How much do you pay for both your nbn and your mobile currently?

          • -6

@Tleyx: Why would NBN be relevant to this?

            • @xenoic: Replace your NBN with the phone plan is the whole point. Depending on how much data you use at home.

              • @freefall101: Nah that’s not going to work for me cos it’s not just me using the internet at home. I have 30 devices on wifi

Edit: Plus, me and my fam go through 200Gb a day on average

              • @freefall101: That means you would have to hotspot your phone 24/7 when you are home ?

                • @ninohax: Yeah that’s why I say you can’t really replace your home internet with mobile hotspot.

Hotspot is only a 1:1 device connection. Definitely not a viable option for 95% of the people if you are thinking to replace your home internet with mobile data.

                  • +1

@xenoic: That's why the comment above says for some people it can replace wifi, not everyone.

                  • +1

@xenoic: Interestingly this is not that complicated. All you need is a router that supports USB tethering or wireless bridging.

I just came back from a holiday where the hotel WiFi was horrible, 3 of my family members were on Optus and they all had pretty bad 4G speed in that area. So I ended up sharing my Telstra 5G connections the whole time. Over a 1 week trip we consumed about 50G of data altogether.

All I did is connecting my phone to a GL.net pocket router with USB hotspot turned on, then this device goes into a powerbank that allowed us to roam around when we are outside. Once we are back to the hotel I'll just charge the powerbank.

Below is the link for the portable router.
                    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/512070

                    • @VicGG: You can just use your phone Wifi Hostpot, that is enough to connect 8-10 devices.

                      • @samehada: yes that is true but you have to realize that if you share your hotspot using WIFI you phone goes hot and it drains the battery even quicker.

with this method I am feeding only 1 device and the rest of them is handled by the router.

                        • @VicGG: It would still dent your battery backup by a huge margin. Hotspotting would only work if you have a spare phone lying around which you can plug into the charger 24x7

                    • @VicGG: Why would you need a router? Ain't most phones nowadays can hotspot itself to other phones use? I do it all the time

                      • @DraggyX:

                        1. Phone overheating and battery drainage (as mentioned above).

                        2. Availability and reliability - quite a lot of the phones will auto disable hotspot when there was no traffic/connection, it is a pain having to keep switching it off/on. We are talking about replacing home wifi using the mobile data, imagine if you have to keep refreshing the hotspot when the kids are complaining that they cant get onto Youtube?

                        3. WIFI performance - if you need to cover bigger areas or want better speed.

      • Shame no data sharing with others on your account.

      • Exactly what I did with the 24 month 400GB deal not long ago. Much faster and more reliable.

      • Lol well Telstra’s payout to me 2 days ago says otherwise. I work from home quite often and if the broadband dies, I need to hotspot…except Telstra LTE where I live is 1bar 4G, 3.7up 0.9down (last time I checked). Wasn’t an issue when I was on Optus…surprisingly

      • But only if you’re using it yourself. I’ve been trying to find a deal where I can use one of these sims in a 4G modem but the terms and conditions all state for mobile phones only.

Anyone tried using these sims with 4G modem on a long term basis? Has Telstra blocked their connection after a couple of days/weeks of usage in the 4G modem?

    • +1

-_- as if normal people can use 300gb mobile data…

      • +1

I could if it worked on the train to and from the city during peak hours but oh wait it can’t Telstra’s network comes to a crawl during those times and I end up having to pre downloading everything anyway…

        • +2

10gb a day average… That's 5 hours of hd content :'D how bad are the trains?

      • Normal influencers can

      • +1

I see you too like Linux iso's

    • +1

I'm with you… Working from home… Optus 300GB plan… I'm 114 days in & still have 290GB left … These plans are a waste for me now but could be super useful to others

    • Exactly why I wouldn't touch any of these plans.
Shortly after the excitement of having $1200 worth of gift cards sets in the anger of paying $99/m for something you don't need. Been there, done that.

  • +12

So expensive. For a mobile plan with actual value around $50/month, which provides no international calls (regardless whether I need it or not).

    • +1

It works out to be $49 per month after you subtract the value of the gift card. So is it expensive, or is it actual value?

    • It’s good value if you account for the gift card while WFH environment because your WFH claim will be based on the $99/m which would reduce your monthly to pennies if not put you ahead

      • +1

Do you claim 100% usage to work?

        • na i don't. I work 5 days a week but the place i work at is open 6 days so i'm expected to take the odd call (rarely) on Saturday from staff. a few years ago I claimed via estimated percentage of the week based on hours i'd expect to be online but you could easily claim full days now because calls, text, software (via apps) and emails filter through live so it's not totally unreasonable if the question is raised by the ATO.

      • -1

If your tax rate is 45% and you claim the whole cost that reduces it to $54.45/m which is $1306.80 on 24 months. Minus $1200 and you end up at $4.45/m.

It still very good value for 100GB on Telstra but it's not pennies.

If your tax rate is lower or you don't claim the whole amount or if you value the gift card lower (JB gift cards can be found at 5%/10% off) then it increases the final cost.

        • I don't think claiming the whole lot would fly in an audit unless you had a second personal phone

You have to claim a work percent

  • +1

Very hard to find out which one of these deals is the best value! I am looking to outright buy the fold 4 but I can't seem to find out which one will net me the most savings?

    • +1

If you're a low user the $300 giftcard on the $69 is still a better deal. 12 months of $69, then 12 months of $30 on a prepaid(can be done even cheaper than this depending on your usage) after it ends is $888 over 12 months + cost of fold. So waiting for the $500 giftcard is even better at $688 over 24 months- unless you need the fold immediately.

This $99 plan is $1176 over 24 months + fold cost.

For reference, I've taken the giftcard amount out of the cost of the plan rather than the phone.

  • +3

Can you use the gift card to pay for the monthly invoice?

    • +1

This is a good question and I would also like to know haha!

    • +2

No, it's a JB Hifi gift card.

  • Wish Optus would do deals like this, so I could scrap my home Wireless Broadband deal, and put the Sim card in my router to use as my home wifi…

    • +2

Harvey Norman (🤮) sometimes do this type of deal but through Optus.

      • +1

Exactly how I feel about Gerry Harvey 🤮🤮

        • And flOptus 🤮

    • +2

Even if Optus did similar deals like this isn’t it only for mobile phone use and not 4g modem?
I spoke to someone at Telstra once and they said they can tell if your sim is in a mobile phone or 4G/5G modem and if the sim is for mobile phone but it’s detected to be in a modem on a long term basis, Telstra will suspend the activity (as in you can’t use it until you call Telstra to get it unsuspended).

I don’t know how well this is policed in practice but that’s what the person from Telstra told me :(

      • I call bullshit if it comes to Optus because i got plans a couple of years back for a Samsung tablet with the data on top. Put that SIM that was for the tablet into my Optus modem that I already had and worked fine over the two years.

        • +1

For Telstra, the sims you get for tablets are the same ones as 4G modems so maybe that’s why it was fine with Optus as well? I’m not sure, just saying that’s what I’ve been told and read in the terms and conditions.

If you read the t&c for data/tablet plans even for Telstra, you’ll see that it does allow for 4G modem use, though I can’t remember the exact language they use.

          • @YeboMate: Damn that sucks for Telstra then so there's that idea out the window. Optus must have cottoned onto it by pricing their tablets and phones on plans differently cos I've looked and looked and can't see a way to do what I used to do

            • +1

@adrianhughes1998: Yea I know… It really sucks. I have a 4G modem ready to go… and just waiting for a good deal on a plan. Usually the good deals (like this one) is for mobile phones and not data/modem plans. I've been wanting to replace my home NBN with cellular as it's more reliable (sadly).

      • Just get a Xiaomi 5G phone and use it for hotspot. You can connect it with a wifi router that runs Rooter firmware.
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/711346

The 5G phone is cheaper than getting a 5G Wifi Dongle anyway.

Even if your phone battery is flat out, you can just striped out the BMS (the top part of your battery - battery management system) and hardwired it, you don't need to get new battery.

This is what I've done last time
        https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/24969/80703/img_202006…

Or else just get a Technicolor DJA Telstra modem that can be unlocked, but this will be only 4G.

  • I am wondering could you purchase the new fold 4 for $2500, take the $1200 JB gift card and sell it to someone for say $1000, making the cost of the phone $1500?

    • You don’t get a phone though - it’s BYO?

      • Yeah this is a Sim plan

      • +1

He’s asking if he can buy the fold 4 outright (unrelated to this deal)

    • +2

Why not just sign up and use these gift cards to pay for the phone?
      $2500-$1200 = $1300
Unless you are buying the phone cheaper somewhere else?

    • +1

You can sign up to the Telstra plan first and get the $1200 JB gift card since there’s no expiry on it

Also wouldn’t this deal be better from The Good Guys since you’re only paying $999 upfront for the Fold4 along with the 24 Months contract? (Total cost: $2376 (24 months plan) + $999 (for the Fold4) = $3375 vs $3676 from JB ($2376 + $1300 (buying outright at $2499-$1200 (JB gift card))
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/718148

      • Maybe it can be stacked with the trade in bonus of $600.

Trade in an item get the $600 plus the trade in value.

Sign up to this get $1200 then buy the Fold Z4

    • Buying the phone is an extra step you would just sell the gift card for $1000 maybe a little more

    • Good Guys has Fold 4 for 999 for the same contract as this

  • Not good enough jb

  • +2

Telstra said they weren't doing term length mobile plans anymore, so they just use JB Hi-Fi to do their bidding.

The risk for term length plans is that if you can demonstrate that the coverage has dropped considerably, you can break the contract with the help of the TIO.

That leaves it open for grey-ethical individuals to wait for every opportunity they get a single/no bar, copy the speed test and create an extensive log of bad service that isn't a fair representative of the service they have received. Even if they have used a lot of data, they can argue they intended on being able to use twice as much but weren't able to due to the intermittent nature of their signal.

If the contract through JB Hi-Fi has just the $99 per month payments being for 24 months minimum of telco service, the gift card may not be recoverable if the customer gets out of their contract with Telstra's consent.

That's one of the reasons why they stopped doing it, another is to avoid the ongoing risk of their operators ripping off disadvantaged people.

The way they got around it was by making the phone inclusion a loan for the full MSRP of the handset, which is the customers only ongoing obligation. If the customer cancels they are forced to pay upfront a large final bill, without that bill being for a service not rendered, which was always somewhat easy to get out of.

In practice, it's exactly the same thing being locked to a handset repayment plan that costs too much to change service providers, but made a lot more sense. So I wonder how this old JB Hi-Fi plan plays into the risks for Telstra.

    • +1

      The terms for the deal;

      Maximum Early
      Termination Charges
      (ETC)

$1188 (plus any Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fees (if applicable).

      Maximum Voucher
      Reimbursement
      Cancellation Fee $800

      If you cancel,
recontract or move to an ineligible plan then you'll need to pay
a Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fee pro-rated against
the remaining months on your Plan in addition to any Early
Termination Charges set out in the above table and accessory
      payments.

In addition to this (ETC), you'll also need
to reimburse Telstra for any vouchers you received for entering
into your plan. This Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fee
is pro-rated, equal to the total amount of the base voucher
divided by 12 and multiplied by months (or part months)
remaining in your plan term. This charge will appear on your
Telstra bill, the maximum of which is also set out in the table.

  • If it was $79 per month with the same bonus, then it's a deal

    • Well don't Telstra have some weird system where you can sign a contract and then ring up and ask them to give you $10 or $20 off the contract?

      • I heard people say it only works on the 12 months contract ones.

      • Used to, but no more

  • -2

    Another Telstra scam.

  • I used this to get out of a 24 month plan with Vodafone because there service coverage was horrible. The only pickle was that I got a $1100 bill from Vodafone which had to be paid within the month and I got stuck with a 1200 Giftcard which I don't need right now. So still cashflow shortage in the immediate term.

  • If you ask nicely and relentless you can get a $10 to $20 per month credit for 12 months from Telstra support online chat.

  • -2

The gift card has an expiry date of 17/08/2022.

    • Where does it say?
Afaik JB gift cards don’t expire as stated on their website

Our gift cards do not expire.
All Gift Cards sold at JB Hi-Fi or at third party locations do not expire.
This excludes Ultimate Kids Gift Cards and Ultimate Teens Gift Cards, which will be subject to the expiry date stated on those cards and can only be redeemed in-store.

I think you’re referring to this instead:

Bonus data ends 31/08/22. Gift card ends 17/08/22.

That’s for a separate promo for a $1000 gift card which ends on 17/8

    • The $1200 gift card "DEAL" ends 13/08/2022

There are other gift card "DEALS" that run until 17/08/2022 that aren't as much as the $1200 one which ends 13/07/2022. This is the timeframe the offer is eligible, not the gift card expiry.

    • That'd be new, the last $600 card I got was clarified to be a no-expiry any store card

  • Already have Telstra on $69/180gb data (until April 2023).
This is fairly tempting because it basically represents getting $480 value and an extra 20gb data. I don't like the terms and conditions mentioned earlier where you will have to pay back a pro rated amount of the gift card upon early termination. $480 value doesn't seem worth losing flexibility.
Doesn't seem to feel much different to being locked into a subsidised handset honestly.

  • I ported out of Telstra 3 weeks ago. Do I need to wait a bit longer before porting back in? I recall a JB Hi-Fi rep telling me that I need to port away from Telstra and wait 30 days…. Is this true?

    • That is what people have always said but last time I ported out and back in for one of these deals it was 2-3 weeks only away from Telstra and the guy at JB didn’t check - worth a shot if the deal stacks up for you.

      • Thank you, I'll give it a go and report back

      • No luck :(

The system flagged it as being under 30 days.

  • -2

1200 - 12 months would have been awesome

    • So a free 12 month plan? Yeah, that would be awesome and also nonsense from a business perspective.

  • I only see $1000 gift card from the link to jbhifi website, where is the $1200?

    • +1

The first big banner right at the top of the page when you click through the link from this deal :)

  • paying $150pm here with no lock in at Optus

this includes 2 mobile phones, 1 tablet (those 3 devices share 90gb per month, never even chew through the half of it), and unlimited 5G home internet

paying $99 for 2 years for just one phone, even with a $1200 credit, sounds a bit much.. greedy

  • -1

    No free phone?

  • Curious, best tips on using the $1200 gift card buying something and reselling to essentially get best cash value. All tips appreciated. Cheers

Just went to sign up for the plan and traded in my phone,
$1200+$500 phone value+$600 trade in bonus and paid $199 for the Z Fold 4
Went to chat with telstra online and got a further $20 port-in credit, ask nicely and throw in the family and friends got the credit so that's why you joined and you're good to go.
