  • Do you think the haswell club are good enough to play roblox or minecraft for kids?

    • -1

      using onboard video? no

      • +8

nah, i remember playing minecraft on my i5-4440 iGPU back in the day no probs

        • +1

Yeah, you do realise Minecraft is still in development though, right? It tends to get more bloated, harder to run over time…

    • Don't know about Roblox but my kids still play Minecraft on really old laptops with onboard graphics, a Core 2 Duo T7500 and a Pentium B940 (we're talking a 16 and 10 year old laptop). Running the Windows Minecraft. Not sure about Java version, I suspect that would have a little more trouble.

    • 100% YES. CONFIRMED. But too late now.

  • +1

Are any of them on the list good enough to drive 4k60 video on a TV? I.e. htpc

    • on this same thought, anybody have any good ideas to use this instead of a nvidia shield/smart tv.

I have a smart TV, but naturally those smart TV's are underpowered. Would this be a suitable replacement? and paired with what OS/software to do so?

    • +1

Any of the SFF's will do. You would need to pick-up a low profile card like a GT 1030 but will work a treat once installed.

    • -2

      display port

    • +2

The "Lenovo ThinkCentre M910s SFF Desktop PC i5-7400 16GB RAM 256GB SSD Win 10 Pro GT730 GPU $237.15" might, because it has proper (but basic) GPU (the Nvidia GT730).

But there was a there was a deal on here a few weeks back for MeLE Fanless Ministick PC, and I got the top model (Celeron J4125 + 8GB ram + 256GB storage) for $227. It's got 4k60 support in the specs, and is working great as HTPC for me. It looks like the price has gone up at the moment though: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09DYBBDDR/

    • +1

Anything thats Intel 7th gen plus will be more than capable. The QuickSync iGPUs are very desirable for media servers - not unheard of for them to play 20+ 1080p streams at once.

  • Hi OP, do you know if the Lenovo ThinkCentre M720Q Tiny i5 8400t has HDMI 2.0 (i.e. it can output 4k @ 60Hz)?

    • Only on the dp port by the looks.. Hdmi is 24hz

      • Do display ports from 2013 convert signal to 4k 60hz with hdmi adapters?

        • I'd like to know this too. What is the DP version here?

  • are these good to run an online business from?
    Microsoft office, chrome etc?

      • Would these be good as a print server, torrenting/seeding machine (for seeding linux ISOs) and PLEX server? Haven't kept up with processors over the last few years :(

        • Yes, though not for Plex if you want to transcoder on the fly.

          • @mskeggs: nah, i don't do transcode, just direct streaming (or whatever it's called) as i don't use very large video files. Thanks for the help!

            • +1

@pichxlonco: You can direct stream on just about anything. I run Kodi donate radarr save deluge etc on an old athlon and it serves 1080 to 5 seats no problem.. it seeds I dunno like 150 torrents while doing that. This stuff not hardware intensive.

      • +1

Lol. That is because office requirements were so much lower back in 2012.
Today's word processing and spreadsheeting is much more intense.
If you need to give somebody a machine to actually do business stuff like use office apps, or view business intranet pages or stuff, these won't shoot the lights out, but they will be fine.
I'd probably suggest running office 2016 or 2019 unless there is a reason to run o365.

If you want to run 30 open chrome tabs, edit video and produce 3d renders, they won't be suitable.

      • -2

I'm with you. My work has 3 or 4 excel files, few pdf's open. Add chrome tabs, teams, zoom calls etc….16gb ram and a 4 core is a minimum.

There's (mod: inflammatory) on these deals that refuse to believe that a 2 core secondhand, 9 year old thrashed out office PC is anything other than a bare minimum, entry level device.

A bargain, maybe, for a student to study on. Maybe. But nothing more. I've got a couple as a media server and other projects. For specific purposes they are fine. Amazing value for money, even.

    • The M710 or Optiplex 7060 looks good as a desktop.

    • +7

Not sure how sparky42 is forming his opinion on but these will be completely fine for light use such as email, internet, etc.

I would not be running anything intensive off these though

      • Very light use. If you're running an 'online business', safe to say he's correct and you'd be better off at the very least going for an 8500T. I had a Dell OptiPlex 7060 USFF i5-8500T in basket yesterday for $309.

        • I run my online IT business using Shopify.

Any thin client machine would be able to run it through a browser

          I stand by my statement..

          • @Cyphar: It really depends what you are doing. You obviously only undertake 'very light use'.

    • I give out these exact PCs at my work (m93p tiny, same specs) and they are used for that. They work fine but if you're using massive or complex spreadsheets that's where they would struggle. You might also run into issues with the 128GB SSD if you don't store things in the cloud.

      • in your view, is the RAM or CPU the main issue for slow spreadsheets/chrome tabs?

        • CPU but this is only when running big, big sheets and formulas. If you're just doing simple stuff it's fine.

          • -6

@rad000: Mate, this is simply bulldust. A 2 core pc is literally bottom of the barrel. It might do the job but add in zoom video calls, few pdf's, few tabs in chrome and no, it won't be "fine". Yes, it probably will "work" but it will also struggle.

Tell me you haven't done a days WFH in your life without telling me you haven't done a days WFH in your life.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: I literally work in IT and dish these badboys out. I am the one who has experience with this exact model, exact spec PC. Dunno what else to tell you but you seem upset that I'm providing real-world feedback. I accept your apology.

              • -6

@rad000: Mate, if you "work in IT" dishing out 9 year old desktop PC's then you're working in a bargain basement reseller or a bargain basement enterprise in general, and you're thus hardly qualified to speak to comparative performance.

                • @[Deactivated]: Going by that response, you're even less qualified to be talking about this than I thought. Thanks for your valued input anyway, champ.

                  • -2

@rad000: Okay, guy who "dishes out" 9 year old CPU's at his I.T job, lol. You're not even good at lying.

                    • @[Deactivated]: He needs to start leaving his desk phone number on the PCs he dishes out and see how many calls he starts getting every day about how slow they are with PDFs, spreadsheets and large word docs from the end users.

                      • +1

@Budju: I simply cannot fathom the fact that there's one or two dozen people lurking this site to insist that a processor that's 9 years old (and fairly freaking average even then) is not the absolute bottom of the barrel, every single time one of these deals comes up, in short order. To the point that they always, always downvote anyone pointing out this simple fact.

Honestly, it reeks of fairly industrial astroturfing more than anything else.

                        • @[Deactivated]: Haha yeah, some people over-sell how good the computer is. It isn't bad but I wouldn't go around giving it a glowing recommendation for business use. At this point I'd say any OEM SSD that has been present in the computer for eight or so years is probably a huge risk to business. Perfect for personal use @ $120.

    • +1

Yes. Fine. As another poster said, if you are doing large and complex spreadsheets they will struggle. 8gb and the old gen cpus are still fine for web browsing and basic office stuff.

  • any dell laptops?

  • +2

Good deal but I just can't find a cheapie for pFSense.

    • +1

      OPNsense, not pfSense

    • I have a Celeron N5105 based box from AliExpress with quad 2.5G NICs, and it's fanless. Was $250 after tax, and seems to be perfectly fine at handling OPNsense.

      • +1

Have you got a link or model number?

        • I ordered this one during the DISC0VERY sale, but I think the same model can be cheaper at other AliExpress sellers. This one seems to have a good heatsink as it only gets to 45°C.

I neglected to mention that these are barebones at $250 and you will need to add a DDR4 SODIMM or two and any 2.5" or M.2 storage medium.

  • +1

I want to buy the X1 Yoga Gen 3….do you have any available?

    • …..hellooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo??????????????????????????

      • Contact him on Facebook, probably you can check with him on stock.

        • ok, thanks i want to buy one.

  • Hello
Do you have any T470/s or T480/s which would have upgradeable ram to at least 16 or even 32 gb?

  • +3

Better in many ways that an unobtainable Raspberry Pi.

Pity the deal is Afterpay only.

    • i think signing up for afterpay wont affect your credit score (it didn't on my case), so you could still quickly apply for an account and benefit form the prices.

    • Depends on your raspberry pi project as might be overkill

    • +1
  • LENOVO THINKPAD T470S.i7 6generation can install win11?

    • It is possible to install, and runs fine, but is not officially supported.

  • needs some help, M93p or M700 for $45 more?

    • for what purpose????

      • raspberry pi4 and usually office applications.

        • The M93p is certainly more than capable of basic office apps, though only 2-core, and is so cute.

What are you talking about with Pi4?

  • 8400T good for nas

  • +3

have had 7 of these at the office in the past, all 7 experienced coil whine at some point, just an FYI, YMMV

    • Aren't the power supplies laptop style?

      • +1

yeahh big chonker charger, but its the cpu cooler heat pipes embedded into the board that make the high pitch whining

  • Dell Optiplex 7060 - does it have wifi?

    • Unfortunately it doesn't.

  • Stupid question of the day - do these Lenovo ThinkCentre M910s SFF Desktop what display ports they have on them? Just displayport or DVI/VGA? Need to run multiple screens.

    • -7

If you need to run multiple screens, then don't be so cheap.

      • Most of these support dual screens natively, without a graphics card, right off the integrated GPU's and they tend to have 2x or 3x monitor ports right off the motherboard. For like, the last…5-10 years?

    • 2x display port but you can run display port to hdmi or displayport to DVI depending on what your monitors use. The cables don't have to be displayport both ends of that's what's concerning you.

  • +1

Good retro gaming machine maybe up to PS1?

    Sure is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mblABT4eOfI

  • G'day … just wondering if there is anything in the "tiny" form factor with 16GB RAM?

    • Yep, check the M710Q Tiny, you can choose the ram size.

  • Is this snappy?

  • If you need a lappy as a spare and don't care about battery life or small screen issues, this B grade Lenovo T470s will be great.

What's the expected battery health? 50%? Bulging battery? 1 battery instead 2?

    • yeah I'd like to know that too, also if they are able to supply a replacement battery (quite happy to DIY)

      • -3

It's normally 50-80%, in rare case under 50% or one of the battery not working.

        • great thanks

  • Was happy to see the thinkpad until I saw the description:
SCRATCHES CASING; SCREEN BRUISE; SCREEN STAINS; LOW BATTERY CAPACITY (2 Batteries in this model, one might not be working); FRAYED/WEAR KEYBOARD/TRACKPAD

I’ll pass, and there’s no photos of the laptops themselves just some random generic ones

  • how many W does this thing consume on average? with raspberry pis being so expensive I'm thinking whether this will be more versatile for a similar price, running Home Assistant.

    • I'd say 30-40W.

  • Optiplex 7060, is it a good upgrade from the 9020?

    Comes with wifi?

Can a DVD or BR player be added?

    • It will be a great upgrade! Unfortunately it doesn't come with wifi. You can source some thin DVD player and install it yourself. It got all the plugs ready inside.
      Cheers

      • Thanks for the reply, I will think about it

  • Anyone know if these are ok to run home assistant?

  • Does the m700 have DDR3 or DDR4?

    • +1

      Hi it's DDR4.

  • A bit of a computer noob … would the M910s SFF Desktop be an upgrade for me ?? I dont mind it being a desktop as i have a spare monitor.

Currently using a 3 years old Lenovo Laptop which i fell is really slow!!

    Current Laptop specs :
    Lenovo ideapad 330S
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60Ghz 1.80Ghz
    Ram 4GB
    256Gb ssd

    Thanks all for help.

    • +2

RAM is the issue i reckon - you would want 8gb minimum and 16 recommended

    • +1

Just upgrade the RAM and you would see a massive difference.

  • Any quad core or more i7 with 1060 or better gpu, either laptop or desktop? Looking for an entry level video editing setup.

  • I was very sad when my office swapped out my old computer for this. Couldn't even do complex spreadsheets without freezing up.
