    • Lol I don't think we could have hosted better with all the airlines and labour shortages. Meanwhile under liberal everything is corrupted in the government let alone trying to win and host here

Sorry even with Scomo direct control in the hiding would not win over Qatar for World cup to host here

  • +10

How did Qatar win the right to host this circus. So corrupt.

    • +7

Your answer is in your question

    • +9

There’s no organisation more corrupt than FIFA

      • +4

In a world where the UN doesn't exist.

      • +5

        Nah, the Catholic Church exists.

        • -1

          The Catholic church exists

    • +1

Money talks. Altho it’s absolute worse place to host it but I love World Cup and every 4 years, I take 4 weeks off to watch all 65 games. But none of the host country ever makes money from World Cup, it’s the team and fifa.

    • Not as corrupted as Scomo mate. Liberal government was the circus

  • Yes!

  • Yes! Mini matches as well, great stuff!

  • +4

Considering the direction live sport is going, i.e. behind increasingly expensive paywalls this is a great deal (and hope will always be in years to come with the SBS).

    • -2

Kayo isn't that expensive considering the alternative

  • +31

Apologies for being on topic but i'm a football fan and really appreciate the post so thanks.

  • Not really free - where do you think SBS get the majority of their funding from ???

    • +3

      Bikies?

      • +19

Explains why they always show the cycling

    • +3

better than paying Optus & Gladys $25 per month to stream in 720

    • I don't know, you enlighten us as it seems you know

      WHERE?

  • +8

Back where it belongs. SBS have always hosted the soccer when no other channel was interested.

    • hosted the soccer football

      FTFY

      • It's not football as you can score with your head.

        Soccer is headfootball

        • +7

And Australian football is the one where you get a point for missing the goal. Consolation prize.

          • -2

@RSmith: At least you can only score with your foot not with your head or hands like the other "football's"

The behind is part of the goal so you are still getting a goal it's just not as much as the middle

            • +2

@Tleyx: Will see you at the next Australian Football World Cup…

            • +4

@Tleyx: so it's handball 99% of the time, then 1% football

              • -2

@renaldof: The only thing that matters is the scoring at the end of the day.

                Oh wait…..0-0 games nevermind

                • +1

@Tleyx: I can see where you're coming from, the 0-0 scorelines. I would contend, however that it only makes the game more nail baiting.

In AFL (I love the game btw), a team is up 40 points at the main break, its highly unlikely they lose after this point. Yes I know it happens, buts its super rare.

        • +2

You mean AFL, Rugby League and Rugby Union where up to 90% of the game is played with the ball in your hands? You call that football? Lol

      • hosted the soccer football

        FTFY

    • SBS has*

  • +9

Don't forget that SBS did get the rights to show all the games in the last WC in Russia…..
….but only after Optus managed the biggest fail in broadcast streaming ever.

    • +1

I wish they did that system again, it would have been cheaper for taxpayers not to have the rights and sbs got all the games

  • +3

Do they stream in HD? Havent had antenna hooked up in years.

    • +1

720p at best and probably a crappy bitrate. One can only hope that mini matches aren’t at 25fps like Optus, Kayo, Paramount etc

      • Damn that's a shame. Will have to find a better source.

      • Do you know why they do the minis like that?

      • +2

I got a free trial from Stan to watch the Champions League in 4k. Once you have seen a full game in 4k, going back to the 720p maximum stream quality from Optus Sport has been unbearable. What makes it worse is they promised 1080p streams but only on certain browsers and devices.

      • its forever 720p can't believe why we don't get 1080p after all these years.

Maybe our stations just can't handle the bandwidth like our NBN

  • +1

Hopefully they bring back Fantasy World Cup

  • +9

    Go Italy!

    Mwahahahhahahaahahahahaa!

    • And I thought the ozbargain comment section would be a place safe from banter :(

    • +1

We never forgive Italy, and we never forget.

2002, never forget you. Rest in peace, ye, c'mon. Check this.

  • +4

Need to boycott this if you care about human rights and the world in general.

    • +2

if you care about human rights

Then also boycott anything coming from China (forced labour), India & Bangladesh (child labour), Australia (treatment of indigenous groups and refugees), Europe (likely created using Russian gas), Russia (treatment of others), etc.

      • +2

Great idea, but we don't need to boycott all of them or in one go. Small steps also count.

      • +2

We don't need to watch football on stadiums build on dead on exploited workers

        • build on dead on exploited workers

Explains why the grass is so green :P

      • I would do a complete stop if I could but doing what I can now based on circumstances. I can boytcott Qatar for sure.

    • -2

You mean banning Russia or China in the game that is

    • +1

Thanks i will boycott the world cup in US. By far the biggest most destructive country in the world

  • +6

I remember Optus snatched the right from SBS for World Cup 2018 but then they bungled the service and their server couldn't handle the load. Eventually they let SBS broadcasted the matches for free.

    • +5

And now Optus has the audacity to hike the price up for Optus sport (even charging their customers) after losing the CL rights and by saying they're adding more to their services in the form of the Spanish league. Absolute joke. Glad they didn't get the rights to the WC this year.

      • Any idea where I can watch Champions League and Europa League matches besides unofficial streams? I do have Kayo and Optus.

        • +1

Stan. Turns out foxtel for $60 a month was not a rip-off after all hey!

    • +1

SBS had all the rights, but Abbot cut SBS funding.
SBS was forced to sell the rights to Optus, but they retained a match per day, plus every Socceroos game (has to be on FTA due to anti-siphoning laws).

  • +1

    Beautiful.

    Thanks OP.

  • -2

    I prefer Mahjong to Soccer

  • +8

Back on the true home of Football.

    • +4

      Soccer Broadcasting Service.

      • Soccer bloody soccer

  • +2

    Time difference will be annoying.

    • how many hours?

      • You can already see the match times and everything with a simple google search.

      • 7 hours so you can only watch the ones happening in their early arvo. No luck for the ones at night

  • +14

You'll see all your favourite soccer stars. Like Ariaga! Ariaga II! Bariaga! Aruglia! and Pizzoza!

    • +6

      Centre holds it…holds it!

      • Hooolds it.

  • +1

    How is this a deal??
    It's an announcement.
May as well say put a post up that the news is available on FTA on various channels..

    • +1

Last world cup most of it was on Optus Sport - this is free that you had to pay for

      • The games were on sbs last world cup

  • +1

    Fantastic!!!

  • +1

Bummer i was hoping 7 would broadcast it and have Basil Syphilis commentate.

    • +1

With Bruce Macaroni giving his 2 cents?

  • +7

    Awesome, bring back Lucy Zelić

    • +2

  • +2

Awesome! Love SBS coverage of soccer

  • +5

    Hope Martin Tyler be commentating.

the augeroooooooooo one was soo good

  • +1

if Australia qualify through group stages I will do a shoey and eat my shoe.

    • I'll hold you to that

    • I don't see it happening.

    • +1

If Australia advance to the quarter finals I will eat your shoe after you have walked all day in it with no socks

      • Semis and I will re-eat the shoe you already ate the day before.

    • Audience will be ready at the OzB birthday meet up then :)

  • +2

Imagine paying optus $25 per month to stream in 720

    • It's 1080 now but only can get it to work via my IOS app for streaming

  • +2

    Alhamdulillah

  • +1

    Cheers to SBS

  • +1

Nice, the kick off times are mostly not too bad for my teams, England, Japan and Australia.

  • Not a deal, should be a PSA forum post.

  • -1

    Only 89 sleeps!!! Yeh

    …..can't believe it's in Qatar.
…. kinda a climate, human rights black hole……

World Cup in Russia didn't really help the country evolve …..

  • +1

The next best thing on sbs after eurovision

  • +2

Can you stack GC with this deal?

  • +6

where the hell is everyone sleeping in Qatar,

it is a bloody disgrace being in such a small country island, that has never made a world cup, would be as boring as sh*t to goto, and has no accomodation, never the less killed many immigrants with slave labour.

a world cup should only go to a country that has
    1.) qualified before
2.) not hosted in the last 24 years or so
3.) has sufficient stadiums and accomodation

i.e Australia, England, … even NZ using the above rules.

whats next Bahrain to host the cricket, Kuwait to host the olympics, Brunei host the Rugby World Cup

    • Savage.

      • but True, world cup is meant to be a party somewhat with some fun…. you don't go to Qatar to have fun.

    • Couldn't agree more. Apparently they are setting up fan village campsite with tents - not sure how that will work out in the heat of the day
