nbn 50/20 $59.95/Month, 100/20 $74.95/Month, 250/25 $99/Month, 500/50 $109/Month for 12 Months (No Lock-in Contract) @ Leaptel

2830

Following the success of our spring 12 month promotion, we have extended the promotion to become an ongoing promotion with no planned end date.

I am happy to report that following a successful trial in October, we now use GSL for our international transit (instead of Vocus), which has made a significant difference to the quality of our international speeds.

The nbn offer

Down Speed Up Speed First 12 Months Ongoing Typical Evening Speed Down
50Mbps 20Mbps $59.95 p/m $74.95 p/m 50Mbps
100Mbps 20Mbps $74.95 p/m $89.95 p/m 100Mbps
100Mbps 40Mbps $84.95 p/m $99.95 p/m 100Mbps
250Mbps 25Mbps $99 p/m $119 p/m 250Mbps
500Mbps 50Mbps $109 p/m $129 p/m 500Mbps

All the above have unlimited data.

$0 activation including for month-to-month. We do offer a 24 month option if you need a modem and don't want to pay upfront for it.

Speed & Service

We are with nbn directly on 121/121 nbn POIs which means guaranteed no CVC congestion as we control our own CVC and have lots of headroom.

IPoE/DHCP is our standard connection method (no vlan tagging required) and we are happy for you to BYO modem. We do support PPPoE as well should you wish to use that connection method.

All connections are CGNAT by default, however you can disable CGNAT and receive a IPv4 dynamic IP at no cost through our portal, full details at https://leaptel.com.au/faq-cgnat/.

We support IPv6 in a trial/alpha configuration and can be toggled on in our portal.

We have points of presence in data centres in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney with peering and transit in each. You can check out our looking glass at - https://lg.leaptel.com.au/.

Our support team is located in Box Hill, Melbourne, so when you have a problem you're talking to someone local. Wait time are kept to a minimum and we support livechat and email tickets as well.

500Mbps & nbn fibre upgrades

As I mentioned we're now offering 500Mbps/50Mbps, which with a 12 month discount is a great option if you're eligable for nbn's fibre upgrade program, which you can find more details about at https://leaptel.com.au/nbn-fibre-upgrade/.

Existing customers

If you are an existing customer and have not had a promotion in the last 12 months we will be happy to provide you with this discount. Please just contact our support team which you can do very easily at https://leaptel.com.au/contact/.

In any other circumstances also just reach out and see what our team can do, we are willing to assess any reasonable requests on a case by case basis.

Opticomm

If you're in an Opticomm area we have different 6 month offers which can be found at https://leaptel.com.au/opticomm-plan/. We'd love to match the nbn offer but Opticomm's wholesale pricing is more expensive than nbn and we presently absorb a $99 ex gst activation charge for all new connections alongside other charges. There is presently a ACCC process underway which may result in increased regulation on Opticomm (and other non-nbn broadband) and we're hopeful that once completed we will be able to align our Opticomm pricing and promotions with nbn.

Who we are

Many of you won't know who Leaptel is. And that's fair, we've mostly been focused on providing services on the Opticomm network which has allowed us to do what we're now doing on nbn.

To keep it brief, this is who we are:

We are 100% Australian owned and operated.
We are 100% committed to providing a high quality product.
We are 100% dedicated to providing the best customer service possible.
We are 100% devoted to improving every day in everything we do.
We are 100% willing to own our mistakes and learn from them.

And I think our reviews back this up.

Please check out our Whirlpool Thread if you'd like to know more about us.

I will happily answer any questions anyone has.

Edit 05/01/2023 - As of 24/12/2022 we have been making our nbn CVC graphs publicly available at https://metrics.leaptel.com.au/dashboards

  • Thinking of moving from Mate. 12 mth offer is enticing.
Do you require vlan tag over HFC? Don't want an additional router in between my google wifi mesh and nbn box.

    • Block-quote IPoE/DHCP is our standard connection method (no vlan tagging required) and we are happy for you to BYO modem. We do support PPPoE as well should you wish to use that connection method.

    • Get the hell away from Mate as soon as you can!

      • Still on their promo price after 2 years!

  • -4

Don't say we didn't warn you all, check Whingepool. Multiple users saying the same thing about these recent outages.

  • +2

I jumped in the previous deal and can rate Leaptel, even with some outages. Most of them that have affected me have been upstream so out of their control. (How hard is it to dial before you dig?) However, communication from Leaptel about planned and unplanned outages always seems prompt and clear.

The one time I contacted support thinking things were down and I hadn't been notified it turned out my router died overnight, but their tech support helped me work through it expediently over chat.

  • +2

is 500Mbps actually 500Mbps, or is it a case of you can only advertise at 500Mbps but it's actually 1Gbps like Superloop etc..?

    • +4

      Hi MdMa7,
Our 500Mbps plan is shaped to 570Mbps, it is not a 1Gbps plan I'm afraid.

    • +2

the max I can get is about 530Mbps

  • +4

If anyone wondering, I have moved from ABB to Leaptel, about 4 months ago, and no regrets, no issues so far, not a single dropout

  • +3

Been with leaptel for a couple of months now. No issues, signup and connection was painless on fttc and speeds are good

  • +1

Thanks Rep - contacted the customer service team and was able to get a discount for 6 months !!

Edit: have been with them for 12 months primarily wfh - there has been some minor drop outs but I would say it works perfectly for me 99% of the time

  • can't say much for other situations, but i had ongoing troubles for around a year until lbnco got taken over by opticomm. it's been smooth sailing since then.

silver lining though, their support team was always easy to contact and tried to be as helpful as they could.

**edit i'm in NSW on their opticomm

    • Hi Xeriah,

I know that Uniti (the owner of LBNCo and Opticomm) has been doing significant upgrades to the LBNCo network since they put it all under the control of Opticomm. Overall the situation has improved, but they still have work to do in our opinion to bring it up to the same standard as nbn FTTP.

Can you explain in a bit more detail the swap from Vocus to GSL? As in, how that benefits customers, what the difference between the two is and what prompted the change?

    • -6

Someone on Whingepool asked for GSL who then reached out to Leaptel then the rest is history, that's how I understand it.

      • -4

Wth how did this comment get down votes, I literally just stated the facts.

    • +6

      Hi onover,

The internet is a series of networks, you have your network in your house, Leaptel has its network, and companies like Telstra, Optus, TPG etc. all have their own networks. We all connect to each other in various ways, some more efficiently than others.

Providers like Leaptel pay other providers, such as Telstra or Vocus, to provide them with connectivity to other networks, particularly overseas. What we found was that the quality of Vocus' connectivity overseas wasn't performing to the level we wanted. This meant if you were accessing content in Europe (in particular) but also the US, you might get slower speeds than you'd like. Where this mostly impacted was IPTV located offshore.

What we've done is enter into a commercial arrangement with GSL to use their network to access international content. GSL has built itself a reputation for providing a high quality international product, and after trialing the product we committed to using them going forward.

Most users would be oblivious to this, because international transit makes up less than 8% of our overall traffic, but for those users who do acess things overseas we hope this is a worthwhile investement to improve their experience.

TLDR: We've invested additional money in buying better international connectivity.

      • Great news that you've swapped out from Vocus. I had tremendous issues while with Leaptel because of them, specifically with some backup servers that were unusably slow. Hopefully GSL will work out better for you.

        • +2

          Hi Owlwad,

We do still use Vocus for domestic transit, and for Hurricane Electric and Lumen. But these both hand off onshore. So far we're very happy with the outcome of the switch and the feedback has been very positive.

      • -1

Great to know. I only switched to you guys because I game on international servers and all of my content that I use are overseas almost nothing local. Therefore you win me as a customer

If you had been on Vocus I would avoid at all costs

  • @LeaptelRep I'm eligible for FTTP upgrade from FTTC. Is there a minimum commitment on 250/25 or higher plan? Do you or nbn charge a fee for downgrading after the fibre upgrade has completed? Just exploring my options at this point but your plans seemed very reasonably priced!

    • From a fttc jump you need to move to 250mbps and if you downgrade or leave within the first year it was a 200 or 300 fee charged by nbnco

    • Hi dtox,

So yes, nbn requires you to commit to a 250/25 plan or higher for 12 months to access the $0 installation to upgrade from FTTC to FTTP (assuming your address is eligable). So therefore we require you to commit to 12 months at that speed or higher with us for us to do the upgrade. If you downgrade or move providers we charge a $200 fee.

Full details can be found here - https://leaptel.com.au/nbn-fibre-upgrade/ and if you have any questions please let our team know (live chat is a great way to ask these sorts of things).

  • Why can't you just make it these prices permanent? In 12 months people either a) leave or b) forget and pay extra $15 for a few months and then leave. Makes no real commercial sense. Ive been with my ISP for 3+ years since they are just always cheap.

    • Who are you with? I'm thinking of leaving leaptel

      • Spintel.. av. $5 more a month just can't justify moving to an unknown mob to save couple bucks but end up having to move again in 12 months

    • +2

      Hi Gavman,

Put simply, we offer an introductory price that is basically at cost to attract you and hope you stick around past the 12 month period if you enjoy the experience. The longer story is that nbn's wholesale pricing is very high and ultimately drives the prices RSPs charge.

There is currently a process underway by nbn / ACCC / government which may result in changes to nbn's pricing structure that will result in some plans reducing in price (potentially 100Mbps+ speeds) but nbn wants to increase the cost of 50Mbps in return. Hopefully they don't do that to 50Mbps as it is the most popular plan and this is the wrong time to be raising prices with everyone paying more for everything.

      • -2

Yes I understand Marketing 101.. but why not buck the trend and just offer the same price indefinitely. Customers might then swap and then stick around longer. You wont get my business because your intro price is a couple bucks more than my current ISP which has been the same price for last 5 years… not sure the type of customers you looking to attract but you must love paying extra staff to handle sign ups and sign downs all the time

        • +7

          Hi Gavman,

Because as I advised, the price we're offering for 12 months is basically at cost and leaves very little room to reinvest into our business. All businesses want to make a return on their investment.

We hope we're doing something a little bit different by offering a 12 month discount to offer you a bit more security than the standard 6 month offering.

        • +10

you don't understand marketing 102 then, gavman

      • +1

Can I just say, your replies on this thread is incredible. I'm loving this insider info on how an ISP operates, and I don't think I've ever seen a PR rep so forthright and transparent with issues.

        • +1

          Hi theguywithnoname,

Thanks for the feedback.I'm actually the operations manager and these days speaking to customers is not something I get to do, so when I do get the chance to speak directly to customers its always refreshing and I hope keeps me grounded about what people want from their internet provider.

You might want to check out our last thread if you're interested as there should be plenty of good information in there too - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/722467

Long time leaptel customer (3years +), opticomm connection.

I try not to advertise how good my internet service is! I fear the old days where everyone jumps on board and the service goes down the toilet in speed and support.

Would recommend if I was pushed to disclose my provider!!!!!

To add one final point, most outages are opticomm related and not leaptel. Nearly all know outages are communicated in advance.

    • Lol same, I wouldn’t recommend them.. too much.

  • +2

Ever since I've moved from Exeter to leaptel, I've been experiencing a lot more downtime. With exetel I'd be lucky to have downtime once every 3 months. With leaptel I've experienced downtime at least once every week it seems.

Sometimes it's good for my health. It forces me to go to sleep instead of binge watching until well past midnight

    • Deal Killer then.. Im with Spintel and hardly have any issues and when we do its NBN fault so would be down for everyone

    • +1

      Hi Muppet,

You shouldn't be experiencing more downtime. Would you mind sending me a private message with your details so I can look into it?

  • +1

No issues here. Been with them since June. WFH. VIC.

  • I am thinking of moving out from Belong, would belong modem will work with Leaptel?

    • Hi Mysterbox,

I cannot 100% guarantee another RSP's equpment but I would be confident it would if the Belong modem is just doing a standard IPoE/DHCP config. It would probably need no configuration change at all in that circumstance.

    • +1

Mine did, but I can't seem to get the router to use PPPoE, only DHCP.

      • +3

The Belong router might not even support PPPoE. It is an increasingly legacy connection type.

Ultimately DHCP/IPoE is the future and I would expect PPPoE support to fall away over time.

Realistically the only reason we still support it is that there are some Opticomm sites that only support PPPoE, so we figure we may as well offer it to our nbn customers as well since we have the capability.

        • You're right, I don't think it does. This wasn't a knock to Leaptel at all, I was just happy I didn't have to throw the old Belong router away when I switched. Unfortunately I've had my router dropping the connection over DHCP, and wanted to try PPPoE. That being said, it may just be time for a new router!

  • Dodo have NBN 100 at 63.85 for the first 6 months, have to get the deal via whistleout. I just signed up for it yesterday.

    • +3

      Dodo 😖

  • @LeaptelRep how do you sign up for the 100/40 plan, can only see the 100/20 plan, are we meant to sign up to the 100/20 and then upgrade some how?

    • +2

      Hi Foolsgold,

You can select an "Upload Boost" under data usage on the 100Mbps plan. I am the first to admit its not very intuitive / user friendly, but we were torn between overloading the plans page with lots of different speed tiers so decided to do it this way.

Ultimately we probably need to do a refresh of the entire page but our team is currently busy working on the new portal.

  • Hi, is the service compatible with Google Nest modem?

    • +2

      Hi Ronsen,

Yes very confident the Google Nest modem will work, as it supports a standard IPoE/DHCP config. If you're presently using it in that arrangement I would reasonably expect that you wouldn't have to change anything for it to work with us.

      • -3

Unfortunately doesn't give me 100% reassurance as I asked the online chat the same question. I don't want to spend $100s buying a new modem after porting over and finding out Google Nest Router is not supported. Does anyone else use Google Nest Router for leaptel nbn connection?

        • +3

We support IPOE/DHCP by default and the Google Mesh supports IPOE/DHCP. So it should work. Not sure what other reassurance you'd like us to provide for Google's hardware.

There are absolutely other customers on our network using the Google Mesh.

  • Aussie broadband really don't care give a toss about price matching just new sign ups.

    Wonder if anyone's jumped ship.

    • I can't ignore it any longer, time for a change here to save some $$$.

    • ABB is no longer the first choice same as Superloop both are no good anymore. They will not offer discount extensions nor care about existing customers

  • I am with Superloop and so far happy but can get 250mb with you for the same price.. problem I have woth a few ISP's are routing as I connect to Johannesburg South Africa. Possible to get a ping test to Afrihost in South Africa?

    • +3

      Hi RenVilo,

Connectivity to South Africa can be a bit tricky as there's no direct path. You can check out our latency yourself using our looking glass. Just find an IP address for a South African site and pop it in here - https://lg.leaptel.com.au/

From what I can tell you'd be looking at 410-440ms latency as it seems to be going via Europe.

  • +1

Leaptel is good, I took refugee with them when they offered 7 days free trial. Activating them on FTTP took 15mins

    Highly recommended

If I was a customer for the 7 day trial, am I eligible for this discount??

    • Hi Homr,

Happy you're happy with us, although I don't believe we've done a 7 day trial so maybe you're confused about how you jumped on board with us?

If you haven't received a promotion from us in the last 12 months we're happy to offer you one.

      • Whoops, sorry I got confused with you guys with Launtel.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/716868

        I can't remove my original post :(

        • +3

I had a hunch. Launtel are a good bunch and are doing good things :) Glad you're happy with them.

  • As someone new to NBN-era "porting", do you generally get a pro-rata refund for the monthly charge with the ISP you're leaving if you port part way through a month or are you best off waiting until the end of a billing cycle? Or does it vary company-to-company?

    • +1

      Hi Incrediho,

This entirely depends on the ISP's contract terms with you. Some provide pro-rata, some don't and bill to the end of the month, and some require 30 days notice. Ultimately your billing terms are set by the ISP not nbn. So best to check with your ISP.

You can set your service to go active on a particular date with us, as part of the signup process. So if you do find out you're charged to a particular date, pop your order in with us for a day or two beforehand to minimise the cost to yourself.

  • +1

Tempting to switch from Superloop at $75 for 50/20 for the same price for 100/20 for 12 months seems very decent

  • I use these guys on Opticom. They are great! Opticom isn't. Leaptel are amazing with customer support, always answering emails really quickly and they know their stuff. Get onboard!

  • +1

Have been with Leaptel for 6 years (Opticomm in QLD). I'd say I've only experienced around 5 outages within the 6 years and only one of outages took quite a few hours (during COVID WFH pre-June 2020) if I remember correctly. Most were resolved within an hour unless there were midnight outages that I wasn't aware of.

I'd love to see prices for Opticomm to come down but Leaptel has rewarded my loyalty by giving me same price as NBN without me even asking and that's why I stayed during COVID when ABB were getting into Opticomm estate and promoted heavily in my area with flyers every month.

Ping wise with phone Speedtest app tested on Superloop Brisbane server 10.16pm 2 days ago, was around 6-9ms "idle" 17-483ms "download" 5-1219ms "upload". I'm not IT professionals so I don't really know what else to test on and always just picked local Brisbane server.

I have been recommending my friends to go Leaptel so will recommend here too as I have had very positive experience with customer service.

  • Just another vouch for Leaptel, been with them for many years and couldn't be happier.

  • Currently with Spintel and although speed tests are really good, it just doesnt feel very snappy. Was going to make the switch to ABB, how does leaptel compare?

  • +1

Can also vouch for Leaptel - the thread on whirlpool is not exactly filled with a huge number of unhappy customers, very happy with them after moving from ABB

  • +1

Existing customer on the 500/50 plan located in Melbourne.

Been rock solid, we did have 2 unplanned outages that was on the nbn co side but I could still use my service was just a little slower. Nbn co fixed it and no issues since.

Been with these guys since June, called support a few times to change plans. Once I had to hang up as I had a work call. Same time the next day they called me back to check everything was right. Pretty amazing to me. I'd recommend.

  • How come you dont offer 1Gbps plan?

    • +5

      Hi Geoff-bargain,
      Great question.

      Short answer: Scale
Long answer: We moved from using an nbn aggregator (Vocus) earlier this year, to selling nbn directly. As part of this process we now pay for backhaul from each of nbn's 121, and to go past 1Gbps backhaul from a POI means we have to commit to buying a significantly higher amount of backhaul. But you need more than 1Gbps to support seeling 1Gbps connections, because if you had 1Gbps from us and started using it you'd impact other customers.

So until we increase our volume across the 121 POIs to make more backhaul viable, the maximum we're willing to offer is a 500Mbps plan because we want our customers to always be getting their speed and not cause congestion for each other.

At the rate we're growing we think we'll be able to take a serious look at 1Gbps plans on nbn in the 1st half of next year. We already provide 1Gbps plans on Opticomm (where we have a larger number of customers) and we know the rest of our network can handle it.

  • Thanks for answering all our questions. Just looking at the router config here: https://leaptel.com.au/troubleshooting/?amp&utm_term=&utm_ca…

There's no guide for the TP-Link. Just wondering then, will it just be a matter of entering my Leaptel credentials into the device and away I go?

    • +1

      Hi Spirrowhack,

Putting your Leaptel credentials in as a PPPoE connection should work, but you may not even need to do that. By default we support IPoE/DHCP, which requires no credentials, so if your router is setup for that presently it should just come online without any changes.

  • @LeaptelRep hello, i am currently with tangerine telecom on fttc. how long does it take to transfer the service? Let's say i nominate 10/11 for the service to be active?
previous transfers all took a few hours and i have to hotspot while waiting for the transfer to complete.
    thank you

    • Hi Lansi23,

If you future date your order with us, then our system will submit the order at midnight 00.01hrs to be precise to nbn. Nbn then normally processes our order inside 30minutes if your address already has an active connection. So you should come online within an hour.

The cavaet to this, is if there is an issue on nbn's side then it can take a business day for them to sort it out, but this is exceptionally rare.

      • @LeaptelRep thanks for that. so what you are saying is, if i was to sign up tomorrow, the service will be activated tomorrow?

        • +1

Yep, you have 2 options basically:
right now (ASAP) in which case our system processes it straight away
          or
sometime in the future (whether it be tomorrow, or next month) whereby the order sits in our system on hold until the date you wanted it comes around, and then the hold is removed and the order is sent to nbn.

  • We've experienced some downtime occasionally (most in the morning) since switched from Exetel/More. However, we choose to stay for Leaptel's A-grade CS. CS line waiting time is almost closed to zero and you get to speak with the people who know what you are talking about directly.

  • I'm an existing customer and have opticom service through you guys. I loved paying 69.95 instead of 79.95 when i had an initial promo.

Any chance to get that discount again if i sign up for 1yr?

    • Hi sirstiv,

If you send us a message through our contact form (https://leaptel.com.au/contact/) with your details and your request our team will see what they can do for you.

  • +1

Churned over a while back and couldn’t be happier.
Incidentally was getting pretty average speeds on Aussie BB and with leaptel no problems.
Same equipment just different port/pop on the backend.
    Makes you wonder.

  • +1

Looking to switch from Tangerine. They use PPPoe with a login (which I found weird after years o FTTP with Skymesh. How long does it take to 'churn'? Any issue aside from rebooting the router?

    • +1

      Hi Bartholemewh,

Generally a "churn" (service transfer in nbn lingo) happens inside an hour. If you're on FTTP you could also just order us an additional port and then cancel your skymesh after your Leaptel service is active if you want to minimise the downtime.

I actually think the best way to do it though is to future date your order through our signup form. That way our system submits your order at midnight, and it all happens overnight while you're asleep. Then you wake up and it should be all working. In most cases you won't even need to reboot your router either.

  • Hi rep, sorry if it's already been mentioned, but when does this offer end? My current Superloop plan ends on the 19th.

    • +1

      Hi Bataleon,

This is an ongoing promotion. We have no set date, but the earliest I think we'd withdraw it would be Feb/March/April next year (unless we got some overwhelming take-up or something).

      • Thanks mate, much appreciated 😊👍

  • Initially had problems with the churn but that was NBNco issue. Just past my first month and can't fault the service provided. Easily on par with the likes of ABB, Superloop etc…

  • Is anyone else getting random game disconnections, streams downscaling to SD, Video calls reconnecting, etc… ?
Seems to be happening multiple times a day since I ported over.

    • Hi Phreaker,

Have you reached out to our team so they can walk through some troubleshooting with you to check whether your service is disconnecting at all?

      • Yea, still diagnosing the issue.
Given there were no issues prior to porting it does certainly feel like it's on the carrier side.

Wanted to see if others have seen similar issues as it'll help me localise the issue.

The sort of issues you're describing are pretty significant and obvious so if there was a larger-scale issue like this I probably would have personally noticed it.

But I'd like to dig into your case and check a few things. Would you mind sending me a private message with your details so I can have a look into your case and see what our support team has done so far?

  • Currently I am with TPG fttc, using TP-Link Ac1600 modem router, do you know how smoothly I can transfer to you?

    • Hi Zxie8,

You should have a pretty smooth transfer, as that router should support IPOE/DHCP, so if its set for that it should just come online.

      • thanks, I will be your customer next month :)

        • Thanks for giving us the opportunity, it really is appreciated.

  • As a current Leaptel customer for 2 months I have "Hungry" (Pun Intended) data needs due to my family loving gaming and Netflix. Leaptel's service is amazing and I definitely recommend anyone who is interested in signing up to definitely switch over. Very keen to hear about the switch to GSL instead of Vocus.

I had an issue connecting initially due to NBN and not Leaptel, their customer service is definitely Aussie Broadband level if not better. Only thing I would love in the future is an app to check my service usage and settings (Currently online only).

      Hi TheHungryHippo,

Glad to hear you're a happy customer.

New portal and app is in development, we just had some turnover in the team which has pushed it back 2 months or so. But I hope we can start showing it off In January.

I switched to Leaptel (500/50) from ABB (1000/50) recently and cancelled after a week.

Obviously can’t compare 1000/50 to 500/50 directly, but Speed Tests on ABB were around 950/45 while Leaptel had around 500/43.
Latency was 7-9ms on ABB vs 12-14ms on Leaptel. I’m on HFC so that could potentially just be down to how the wind was blowing…

I ended up leaving due to the way the connection seemed to handle international traffic.
Some games would download slowly, saving YouTube videos offline was really slow and trying to work with some SaaS platforms located outside of Australia for work just seemed to crawl.

I tried this multiple times over the week but it never seemed to improve. Due to how critical this is for work I unfortunately didn’t have time to troubleshoot further.

Switched to Superloop on a 100/20 plan and it feels like lightning compared to this.

No idea why any of this happened, but hope this helps someone reading.
