Customer Retention Offer: $20/Month off for 6 Months (for Home nbn Customers Who Want to Cancel for Poor Experience) @ Telstra

991

I am currently on a Telstra 50/20 plan (HFC) paying more than I should. With the recent deals I was looking at cancelling my Telstra service so I could move to ABB. While exploring their website around service cancellation, I clicked through to the various reasons for cancellation and found a notification on the "I've had a poor experience" link that offers $20/mth off for 6 months to stay with Telstra NBN (See screenshot)

I don't know if this is targeted or only applicable to specific plan speeds although it will take 2 minutes to check so worth seeing if this works for you. For reference I have been with Telstra for more than a year.

The deal link requires you to be signed in to My Telstra. To navigate there, sign into My Telstra via telstra.com.au. Select your home internet service under "Account Overview" and then click on "View or manage your plan". Then click on "Cancel your service" and then click on "I've had a poor experience". You should then see the message bar as per the screenshot near the top of the screen.

Once you click on the banner you will see a page that says:

"Your $20 monthly credit on your Telstra nbn service will be valid for 6 months and will be applied within 2 business days.

The credit will appear on your bill as ‘Bonus Credit’ within 2 bill cycles. If your nbn service is cancelled within 6 months of receiving your credit, the credit will be removed."

Good luck!

EDIT: It seems you might need to click through some of the options for cancellation before this appears. I had clicked a couple of options before seeing it pop up.

Definitely worth doing, I do this about twice a year with Audible, go to quit and get 3 months at half price

  • +7

Unfortunately this didn't work for me, and I have been with them for over a decade.

    • +5

Same got nothing. Tried again then got $10. Would like $20 though.

    • ditto

      • +1

Ask to speak directly to the retention team, tell them why you're unhappy with telstra and boom.
FYI this also applies to other utilities too.

    • +1

Take 100% off and cancel. :)

    • Good grief. WHY??

      • Without customers like that, Telstra customer base would halve

  • +5

Only got $10 credit, but still something

Edit: Didn't appear immediately. Had to click through the various menu items like "how much to cancel, what happens next" etc then it appeared after about 30 seconds.

    • +1

Same thing happened to me. $10 offered.

    • works after clicking on one menu
      get $20 credit!

    • Thanks Kramo, I actually gave up trying and then saw your comments and it finally did come up for $10 Credit. Better than nothing as I feel that I pay too much already and I have the Foxtel package on top of that.

    • no good luck for me.

  • +1

I had the same, only got the $10 and had to click through the info tabs before it popped up. $60 still a great find. Thanks for the post!

  • So how much it costs even after discount?
How it compares with ABB, superloop and Spintel?

    • 1000/50 for example, would go down to $160/month after the $20 discount compared to say, $149/month with Aussie Broadband - assuming you don't get any sign up discounts with them.

      • +3

1000/50 for example, would go down to $160/month

$104 for that plan with More Telecom

        • +1

Only for the first 12 months then $134 ongoing

          • +3

            @tarken:

Only for the first 12 months then $134 ongoing

which is still way cheaper than the 'discounted' offers above.

            • @jv: $149 - $134 = $15….but Telstra (vodafone / optus) will get 4G Backup. So, it may be worth the money if the NBN at your location is not reliable.

              • @bobokingdom:

but Telstra (vodafone / optus) will get 4G Backup

I've never had to do that… and if I ever did, I'd just hotspot from the phone at 5G speeds.

Anyway, More Telecom have dropped their rates as of today…

Also, now first 3 months free for new customers.

                • @jv: Hot News on the more.com.au….

Our network carrier is experiencing an outage affecting nbn® services nationwide. There is no need to call us at this time. Engineers are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience.

                  • @bobokingdom: Mine's working fine.

                    PING 3ms
                    DOWNLOAD 266.71 Mbps
                    UPLOAD 23.67 Mbps

An nbn outage will affect all providers of nbn

Im on the 1000/50 not able to get over 250mbps. Their support staff are useless, looking for another option to jump to because of their poor customer service. Should have stayed with Aussie

          • +1

            @Lovemybargains:

Im on the 1000/50 not able to get over 250mbps.

I'm on their 250/25 plan and nearly always getting 255… Sounds like you have an NBN problem.

The only couple of times I've had to contact More Telecom, they've been pretty good and fixed the problem straight away.

          • @Lovemybargains: Agree 100% about Telstra Support service!! I'm having major problems atm with being logged out of my emails on the hour every hour…The 'assigned' Support person is absolutely useless…

      • Top tier plans recently had a price cut. Gigabit is now $129 at ABB and they're offering $20 a month off for the first 12 months.

        • I can't get over 100/40 with the NBN, but if you're lucky enough to be serviced by Capti, I'll have the option for 1000/50 at $109/month ongoing once they complete the install at my building later this month. Includes a month free trial to make sure you're getting the speeds you're paying for too. I'll definitely be trying them out when I can.

  • +1

"Telstra service so I could move to ABB."

I appreciate what you do. This is OzBargain so we are here to save money.

Jus wanted to say though that switching to ABB when it comes to quality of services and speed is actually worth what I pay. Never felt that way with Telstra (and still don't with my mobiles but have no choice where I am).

    • FWIW you can get retention deals with ABB too if you call the sales team. I got $20 a month off for 12 months on my gigabit plan a few months back when I said I was going to churn to Tangerine.

  • telstra nbn is more expensive than other in the first place, just move out from telstra after they raised my 100/20 to $105/month, now i am with spintel with the same plan for $49/month, just need to keep switching every 6 months

    • +1

They aren't all the same though. There will be differences in the backhaul

      • +8

There will be differences in the backhaul

I noticed zero difference when switching from Tel$tra to Superloop and now to More Telecom. Except the cost significantly reduced and customer service improved dramatically.

        • I've been a member for a decade and not a day goes by where I don't think 'I should just block jv', and you've finally paid off with some useful information. So, I guess my next positive experience from you will be in 2032. Merry Christmas!

          • +2

@bxpressiv: You can still reveal hidden comments on a case by case basis, the comments are just collapsed by default. My OzBargain experience has improved dramatically since blocking jv. Until I read your comment just now I had forgotten that they existed. Bliss.

        • +1

        • Superloop customer service improved dramatically? I've found it massively has dropped since they sent all of their staff off shore nov last year. I hate it now.

          • @ONEMariachi:

            Superloop customer service improved dramatically?

            Definitely

Telstra customer service has been the worst ever experienced.
Waste hours, days and weeks resolving simple issues.
            Never return calls.
Chats being replied to at 2am in the morning. Often by different people, needing to go through explaining the problem over and over and over again…
TIO needed many times to get things done.

            • @jv: Fair enough. I've found Superloop just as bad lately. wasted hours the other day trying to get them to get someone from NBN out to check out lines. was a nightmare. Dude was just reading from a script and had no idea.

              • @ONEMariachi: I haven't used Superloop for almost two years now.

More Telecom have been fine over that time…
Have only needed to contact them about minor billing issues when plans were switched… Fixed problems quickly.

                • @jv: Might have to look into them then, cos I'm well sick of Superloop. Fun one they did for me the other day was disconnect my mums internet, as for some reason when I paid the bill it registered against the December bill, instead of the November bill and made it seem like a no payment. Their whole new billing system is a farce now.

                  • @ONEMariachi:

Might have to look into them then

First 3 months are free if you are a CBA customer…

                    • @jv: well nuts, just did the flop to ANZ for $4000 cashback on the homeloan

      • so far the only difference is my bill is half of what i used to pay

        • I've investigated, I'm paying $180 for top Telstra offering and I'll pay $104 for 12 months and then $135 with More.

  • can someone copy the URL to cancel page? I can't even see the option on my plan. Might be cause I'm on the crap velocity network, but worth a try.

  • Got my mum to switch to aussie bb after 25+ years with telstra as we got fttp

Should have done it sooner, the support is astonishing

Too little too late. Not a good deal despite of the discount. I moved away from Belong a week ago after being with them for 2.5 years. Started at $55, was paying $60 and looking at $65 from May-23. Now I am paying $49.95 for double the speed I was getting earlier. Will move again in 6 months time.

To everyone afraid to move, I say go for it. Let your money speak for you. It is not okay to be flogged a sub-par service at a non-competitive price in today's day and age. I am hoping for 5G coverage and will probably drop NBN altogether like the piece of hot dropping it is. I will not be eligible for FTTP or FTTC until 2025 or later.

I was exploring 4G and 5G plans. It's suspicious that I can get 5G on my phone at 430mbps+ speed anytime of the day but I "don't have coverage" when I try to buy a 5G broadband plan. Similar situation with 4G as I can easily get 200mbps+ speed on my other phone but the 4G broadband is capped at 25mbps. Makes me wonder if this monopolistic behaviour is sanctioned by the government or NBN.

    • It could be a capacity issue. Note that if you move to mobile service you suffer CG Nat which just sucks

      • I did get a 300GB plan on my mobile as a backup and for when the NBN just wouldn't work, for e.g. when watching 4K streaming content on tv. The mobile plan has been awesome. I use NBN for work from home and remote meetings only.

    • +1

Isn't this a post about Telstra?

      • Belong is a division of Telstra Corporation Limited ABN 33 051 775 556.

    • +2

This is a deal for Telstra nbn, not Belong (despite their relationship - different services) - not sure the neg is valid based on your comment?

      • +1

Exactly my thoughts…neg doesn't seem fair given it's a totally different operation.

    • 4G/5G suffer greatly from congestion, high latency, and frequent dropouts. Not much of an issue for individual mobile devices, but not so great for an entire household doing online meetings, online gaming, 4k streaming and large game downloads and updates (potentially all at once).

  • +2

$20 off is not good enough. I had tried and got $10 off but there are much cheaper NBN providers out there by another $20-30 cheaper.

    • $20 off is not good enough

Especially when you consider how much crappier Telstra service is compared to most others.

    • Anyone tried requesting a price match lately? I contacted them on chat recently and they said they would match any other provider. But I had to disconnect when my tea spilt on the keyboard.

  • Awesome! It gave me $10 off which is great!

  • +1

Not for me. It pops up Telstra plus loyalty offer……

  • Thanks for the tip, $20 worked for me

  • +1

The sub par service and support quality speaks for itself, I would strongly suggest consider alternatives.

  • +3

Didn't work for me, it only asked for my feedback "We're sorry to hear this. Please take a moment to tell us why you're cancelling your service today. Your feedback is important and will help us to improve."

    • Same. Tried clicking into the various menus, different reasons, waited over a minute for it to pop up as others mentioned - nada.

  • +1

I'm doing it through the Telstra App. How far through the cancellation process do you get the offer?
I've chosen my reason - "Changing to a new provider" and the next step is "Yes, id like to cancel my plan". I'm afraid if I select this it cancels??

    • Me too? It says you can review after tho.

I don't know what to do?

  • Cheers! Got $10 off for 6 months.

  • +1

I dont see the cancel my plan page when I followed your instructions :(

  • +3

I got this for my mobile plan. Better than nothing I guess.
    “Telstra Plus bonus points offer
We’re sorry you didn’t have a good experience with us. We value our loyal customers so if you choose to stay with us, we’ll give you 25,000 bonus Telstra Plus points to redeem in the Rewards Store. Points bestowed within 14 business days.”

    • try clicking on the 'things you need to know' then scroll back up

    • I get this as well, I thought it was because Telstra had already applied a $10 discount per month on my bill a couple months back. I have $10 off for 12 months, $100 for 100/20. I play online shooters so it's worth the stable ping. Had issues with ABB/SL/Launtel etc. next best was probably Future Broadband which is around the same $$

  • I'm on one of those ancient bundled plans and got this:

"You’re unable to cancel your service

You've got Foxtel from Telstra included in your plan, so you'll need to message us to cancel your service."

    • how do we seperate this, i havent had foxtel in years,

      • Ask Telstra?

  • I dont see anything.. do you need to click on Yes id like to cancel my service?

    • +1

No I just expanded all the boxes above that and then it popped up.

  • Honestly, been with Telstra even Cable for a decade before NBN.

We never had drop outs, we tried multiple NBN providers and constantly had drop outs and downtime.

We switched back to Telstra, no issues and full speed nearly always.

    It could be our area.

    • You should try ABB. Fast, no drop outs, and when you ever need to call them you won't feel like killing them (local call centers and staff you can understand).
You'll never use Telstra again, and save yourself a tonne of money.

  • didn't work for me … i already have $20 credit applied for my plan, but my plan finishing soon. Telstra said reach out before plan finished so they could look into it and scored gen3 modem

  • +2

I have been with Telstra for 3 decades and have always dealt with them over the phone to get my discounts and credits. The particular department I always ask to be transferred to is the "Saves Department" (previously known as the Retention Department) as the people here have a greater ability to apply credits and discounts to your account as compared to the normal customer service department which have almost no ability what so ever. I recently called them INSISTING I speak with the saves department (as they don't always like to put you through to them!) and then I told them of the better offers I could be getting with other providers for the same service I am getting with Telstra (for my NBN50), one of the offers was a $50 credit for being referred to Aussie Broadband by my neighbour and a cheaper plan that would save me money every month. So the guy I spoke to at the Saves Department gave me an instant $50 credit and $10 off per month for the next 12 months. I have set a reminder in my diary to call them again in 12 months and do the same thing. I've been doing this for years now!

    • I do the same, My plan is premium $110 plan, i always pay around $60-65 per month. Sometimes with the credit value they offer, i don't even pay $60 or $65.

    • Thanks for this! I was able to get $10 off. Better than nothing as the popup in the OP did not work for me at all.

  • I can't see any cancel option?

    Found it.

I clicked Poor Experience, but do I click I still want to cancel my plan?

I'm scared I click it and it cancels, or does it let you review after that?

    • +2

      For me it went:
      1. (View or manage plan page) -> Cancel your service
      2. (Cancel service page) -> I've had a poor experience
      3. (I've had a poor experience page) -> Yes, I'd like to cancel my service
      4. (Are you sure you want to cancel page) -> Yes, cancel my service

I chickened out at step 4, but I think you're supposed to get the offer at step 3. I didn't get it so it must only be for certain account types.

  • nothing pops up for me..it was worth a try

    • We must be some of the deprived few.
But, Good on OP for the detailed info.

  • Only managed $10 off, but better than nothing.

    Thank you

  • Nothing for me. But thanks to the OP for posting.

  • -1

Everyone has a bad experience with Telstra + internet is worst experience

  • I don't even have an option to cancel under "view or manage your plan"

  • I can't get it after 10 attempts. I give up :(

  • Got a banner with $10 off for the next 6 months and accepted it. Thanks OP

  • +1

Been with them for 10 years and i get nothing for threatening to leave haha

  • -1

I do not trust these bastards that have been fined or agreed to pay about $83 million dollars in total over the last few years for anti competitive behaviour and disgusting and dodgy selling of mobile plans to disadvantaged people in remote areas

I pay them 80$ PM for 25/5 with home phone and if i clicked through to get 20$ off they probably would cancel.

I am waiting for the moment in the future when i can go elsewhere

    Dodgy buncha

    • What are you waiting for?
