My mum keeps asking if she should get this because my uncle in Scotland says she can watch shows there or something.

We already have chromecast and a bunch of streaming services (I haven't got a VPN yet), but is there anything this provides extra?

    • Speed if you get the Max.

      • Speed as in: responsiveness of the interface and how fast the apps load.

Nothing to do with your internet bandwidth, car capabilities or state of mind.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

This are normal prices for Amazon Fire TV Stick. You can check the prices here
Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max was as low as $39.20 or they were $69 for 2 ($34.50 each)
This is just a bad deal.

    • +9

You can check the prices here.

Thanks, bud. I did. As you inputted the normal Fire TV stick, here are some comparable deals. As we can see here, the price is the same as this deal, $49. More examples are here and here. Whilst these mightn't be the cheapest they have ever been, they are the cheapest currently on the market. Go ahead and argue a price beat at OW, however, as these are a prime member exclusive price, then OW will not beat the price.

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max was as low as $39.20

Yep and that was a banger deal posted by my good friend @BargainsGrabber. However looking at comparable deals to the price stated in this deal, then we can see numerous examples, including here (a Targeted Deal), here, here, here, and here where the deal was $0.40 more expensive. Yes, go ahead and argue that there are examples where the 4K version has been ~$49 and I'm not denying that for a second. Those deals were posted during Prime Day and Black Friday. This price and deal makes for a decent bargain as it isn't during one of those sales periods and is offering a sale whilst still being close to historic lows.

or they were $69 for 2 ($34.50 each)

Yep and as @doweyy said in his OP, "Crazy price for Prime Day". It certainly was a crazy price and as I have already Scrooge, it was for a sales event, Prime day.

Also a little bit of feedback for yourself for a future comment like this relating to bad prices, you can always check on CamelCamelCamel if its on Amazon, which I certainly did and saw that these prices haven't been this low for a while, hence my line in the OP "Not a record low, but it is the lowest it has been for quite some time for all of them". And if you want to check the OzBargain price history, you can do so by checking through the products price history.

This is just a bad deal.

Sure. You're entitled to your own silly opinion. However, in your own words.

        • +3

          Don't take it personally.

          Thanks, bud. I wasn't.

This is Ozbargain and this is not a bargain in any way.

Trying one of my tricks are you? Nice. At least credit it. :)

        • It is absolutely a bargain. I would not buy at $99 but would buy at $59.

    • Thanks for letting us know.

    • +2

Can you find a good bargain on a time machine?

This seems like petty immature revenge for HamBoi69 pointing out a deal of yours could be found cheaper - the difference being that it was cheaper at the time of the post last time, where this time you have to timewarp to 5+ months back ..

      • -3

No revenge here. Just stating the obvious. Prime day it's in July. People if they are not in big need for the Fire Stick now, then huge discounts will be available then. People would not have known if I didn't downvote. That's the only reason I did. I don't want people to buy something that it's normally that price. We are here for a bargain.

        • +1

To be fair, your original comment did Not make it obvious that we should hold out until July for a better deal on Prime day if we are not in a hurry for one. New users to OzBargain might not have deduced that hidden message from your first comment alone.

Your comment that I’m replying to here does in fact help new users unfamiliar with Fire TV pricing so in future include that level of explanation to make it more obvious to perhaps wait another couple of months rather than saying “this is just a bad deal” when OP already said it’s not the lowest price historically but is the cheapest available right Now.

Not trying to stir the pot again - just sharing some neutral observation on how I perceived your message so newbies may have done the same. Keep sharing your feedback and warnings with this in mind.

    • +4

The OP already says it isn't the lowest price ever.
I got in on the 2 for $69 deal but that was in July last year for the 4K Max.
That's close to 12 months ago and like a true Ozbargainer I have not taken them out of the box yet…
I really hate the fact that people post deals and others jump on them for petty reasons like "I saw it for 1 cent cheaper 5 years ago, not a deal", instead of saying thanks for doing the leg work and finding deals.

  • I've been trying to decide on a Fire Stick or a NVidia Shield for our home theatre setup, mainly need it for Spotify, Disney Plus, Netflix, Kayo, etc

    • +12

Don't forget to let us know when you make a decision.

    • If you are intending using it at all for Plex server then you will need the Shield otherwise you should be fine with the Fire Stick.

      • +1

Yeah, and the Firestick 4K Max isn't the best as a Plex client - no TrueHD (has to transcode) and it has issues with files with DV+HDR10 as I discovered on the weekend.

        • Thankyou for this, my Hisense TV doesnt allow me to play 4k movies/shows through the plex app and i was going to buy this to be able to play it but ill cancel my order and wait for a Nvidia shield to come on special

    • Had both, prefer firestick max 4k. Gave it a go because $69 for 2x firestick max4k.

Only annoying thing with the Firestick was onscreen keyboard is abc and not qwerty! Although I'm now used to it and don't mind as much. Voice commands and search is fine. I don't use Plex often but seemed fine. Probably compatibility issues with other devices as well, including shield.

  • Needed one for a little while now for a family member. Thanks OP

  • I dont see wifi 6 options anywhere in the menu of my 4K max stick even though the box says it supports it.

I also noticed there is lag introduced in bright scenes - related to screen dimming with the stick. With the TV stock OS the lag isnt there.

It happens around the 13s mark on this video when it transitions from the snow/pony screen to the next:

    https://youtu.be/EQOarcurXfY

    • What wifi 6 “options” are you expecting to see?

      • Anything to indicate in the menu that shows the current connection is wifi 6 or enabled

        • +2

I would assume your router would list how everything is connected.

          • @PainToad: Nah sadly not, Xiaomi AX1800 not very helpful. I know it works because my phone (android) has a little 6 next to the wifi bars.

  • Nooo, I paid full price last week

    • +1

Ask Amazon for a refund in the difference if you are a prime member and they should credit you, I’ve done this before with great success.

      • Or just send it back. Amazon refund are super easy and quick.

  • +1

    i am still waiting for the 2 x 4k firestick for $69
one of the remotes broke and its cheaper to one of these instead of paying $50 for a replacement remote

    • Contact live chat,

      They will refund the remote

  • -1

    If only it supported Binge.

    • You can side-load Binge by using the Internet browser in the Firestick to download the APK file (the app) and it will install it on your Firestick.
Sure it isn't as convenient as browsing the Amazon App store but you can still get it.

      Binge App (.apk file)
      https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/streamotion-pty-ltd/binge-for-…

Kayo is also another app that isn't found on the Amazon App store but you can install the app by side-loading
      https://m.apkpure.com/kayo-sports-for-android-tv/au.com.kayo…

Plenty of resources out there on Youtube on how to side load apps onto the Firestick.

      • These worked until the recent binge update. Now there does not seem to be a working solution.

  • I’m happy with my $35 4K Max and $100 fire TV Cube 2nd gen, I’m lucky enough to get better prices for these types of items. Not in quantities worth posting here though.

The prices in this listing are regularly available. Over inflated retail price dropped to create the impression that a bargain is being offered

Waiting for a deal on the new Fire Cube

    • Looks pretty decent with an 8 core cpu, ethernet port and wifi 6

  • my 2 year old 4k Max remote died recently, and Amazon sent a new remote. Tried all the usual troubleshooting.

Also serves as a nice retro gaming device with retroarch

  • +1

Dont forget to use cashreward, i think it is 7% for amazon devices.

  • If I just want to run Kodi as a source for my TV would this 4k max be better/worse/similar than getting a chromecast with google TV instead? Is the FireOS smooth and fast?

    • have 4k max & chromecast GTV and both run jellyfine fine

4k Max runs Android so easy to install apps and runs fast

  • +1

If you're thinking of getting any one of these, I suggest that you pull the trigger soon. Amazon doesn't seem to leave discounted pricing up for too long.
I'm waiting for a deal on the over-priced Remote Pro

  • Can you also use this as a standard media player so I can transfer audio/video to watch on my home theatre?

    • +1

yeah, with a USB OTG or access via network using Plex/Jellyfin

  • Has this deal expired?
