Great TV and a good deal. Bought the 55" 6 months back for $1100 with $170 cashback. Google TV interface and boot up are a little on the slow side but it's an awesome TV for watching shows and playing games. Brightness powers through a well-lit room too.

    • Good to hear you like it! I've been waiting for a budget big screen TV with HDMI 2.1 for PS5.

Hmmm any better budget tv that's >=75" with HDMI 2.1?

      • +2

Not sure but I can say the HDMI 2.1 and VRR implementation is pretty good. I have it connected to a PC through an AMD gpu and the VRR/freesync works really well to reduce tearing. Upscaling from 1080p and 1440p also looks great. I've heard it's even better with the PS5.

        • Can you elaborate on VRR implementation is pretty good and VRR works really well?

Do you mean it works as intended and there's no tearing?
Also is the TV doing the upscaling or is it the GPU running at a higher resolution?

          Thanks!

      • +1

Pretty much only the Hisense U7HAU

        • I’d say the TCL is a lot better than the Hisense U7HAU and U8HAU due to the VA panel (higher contrast) and Google TV. At these prices the TCL is a no brainer, particularly the 75.

  • How slow is boot up? Ie how long u wait til u actually watch something?

Also is it fast once booted? Ie youtube opens fast?

    • +3

bought a 65" a couple weeks ago. turns on in a couple seconds. everything is snappy, on par or better than my 3rd gen google chromecast. I went in with low expectations because of the price but was blown away. coming from a 2017 65" LED Sony the quality is way better and it's just a brighter screen. It's in a very sunny room and still perfectly visible.

    • Probably about 30 seconds to get to home screen. I've got it on ethernet but the connection to internet takes a few more seconds. Pretty quick to open YouTube/Netflix etc once all booted. There is a kind of fast boot option you can turn on in the settings that keeps the TV more 'on' when switched off so it can respond to voice commands and cast requests but I found it was causing lag issues the longer the TV went without a proper shutdown.

    • +1

In my case, if i pop on stranger things through netflix or the grand tour via prime, it is laggy for about 10 seconds and then it catches up…

    • +1

      I have the 65" version.
I think fast boot is on by default but its definitely on for me.
Hitting the power button on the remote, i see the app/content screen in a second.

In the year i've had it, i've rebooted it only a few times via the reboot option in the settings menu.

  • This could be a great monitor alternative to OLEDs.

  • +3

It’s a shame they didn’t release an 85” version in this series. Even if it was double the price of the 75 it would be a good deal.

  • +4

Awesome TV, picked it up the 55" 3 weeks ago. Feels bad that it's gotten even cheaper so soon… should have waited lol

    • +1

In the rare situation that you actually picked it up 2 weeks ago, you can head to the JB and get them to refund the difference due to the price change

  • How would this compare to https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/toshiba-55-inches-z770k-serie…

Looking for a 55" TV with decent sound, colours etc and good smart TV functionality. I don't have patience for lag but don't have a clue about TV's. Thanks.

    • TCL is mini LED, Toshiba only full array

      • Thanks. Doing some reading about it. Pros and cons in some regards? Would like the newer technology but the Toshiba seems to have some perks like soundbar (ish?) built in etc. Or is the TCL better in every regard? Would one of the smart TV functionality be faster than the other? How does one check based on specs?

    • Woah… didn't realise Toshiba were still making TVs. Blast from the past!

  • I would say hold off until EOFY sales…

    • I wonder which business has the longest return policy? One could buy now, keep it sealed (maybe don’t even pick it up) and wait for EOFY sales.

    • Am very tempted for 65".
      Wait for another month?

  • Would a 55" be ok if your only watching FTA and catchup tv?

On this lots of negative reviews for the TV

    • +7

All TVs have negative reviews like Sony, Samsung, just make sure you have no problem with TCL brand.

    • +6

The majority of those reviews complaining are just straight-up user error. Turn off Dolby Vision IQ and you can turn off motion clarity which is the setting that causes the judder… ironically by attempting to reduce the judder

      • +1

I did both of these which did nothing to resolve the issues.

        • I've got the C825 and have 0 judder issues. Also the reviews are great so it might be user error or a bad unit.

          • +1

            @FreddyMerc: This is for the 75 c835.

When i bought, i didnt read one bad review.

Then when i experienced all these issues, the next deal that came on ozbargain had a bunch of people having the same problems.

      • Not if you are in a very bright or sunny room and require that extra brightness that IQ can bring. Dropping Down to Dolby Vision bright or dark may allow you to adjust the motion settings but you lose the benefits of the extra IQ max brightness it's a work around not a fix. Alowing the user to adjust the motion in DV IQ is the Answer.

      • How to turn off Dolby Vision IQ in 55C835?

    • +2

On this lots of negative reviews for the TV

Pick any produce and someone somewhere has an issue with it. A quick check of that thread had about 3 people with issues, hardly enough to be representative.
I bought one and it's a cracking TV. Sure it's not going to beat a $3000 OLED, but at nearly 1/3 the price it's about 90% as good IMO.

If you are the type that looks for problems you might find some, but if you are like me and turn on your telly and watch it. it a very good TV.

  • How's this 55" TV compared to Hisense 55U7HAU https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/hisense-55-u7hau-uled-4k-…? We can price match the hisense one with Appliance Central for $825 https://www.appliancecentral.com.au/55u7hau-hisense-55-inch-…

    • +1

Same as the Toshiba mentioned, this is mini LED better than Full Array.

      • +1

I see, thanks for the info. I'm new to this TV universe :D

        • If you are OK with Hisense, you should be OK with TCL brand.

    • +1

Hisense has 5 star rating for power.. TCL only 2.5 star

  • Can 65 inch be transported flat?
    Fit in a rav4?

  • Anyone got power monitoring at home?

Wondering what the real life energy usage is with the backlight turned down to a point where the image is effected (ie. Can turn our tv down 40% and notice no change..except it uses 60% less power).

    • +3

I was looking to buy this TV but it consumes roughly twice as much power at 1130kWh as other similar sized TVs. I decided to get 77" LG CS OLED instead.

      • But the LG is significantly more expensive, no?

        • +1

Yes it's expensive but when you're buying big ticket item for something like 8 - 10 years, it makes sense. Another factor was the weight and thickness of TCL c835, which was not ideal for my wall mount. This TV is chunky!

      • Yeah, it only has a 2-star power rating. Hope you guys have solar panels and a battery - for night time viewing.

      • +1

But thats a rediculous gov metric that is a combination of max brightness and standby over a year. Useless metric for those who adjust their backlights properly and have auto standy off powerboards.

Would love to know real world data. Ive seen a review site saying on avg during run time it uses 120 odd watts. This actually puts it below an OLED and many normal LED tvs…if true.

So looking for real owner data. Someone must have a powerpal etc?

        • +1

I've seen a review site saying on avg during run time it uses 120 odd watts. This actually puts it below an OLED and many normal LED tvs…if true.

All TVs get tested against same metric and tests are not biased to make other TVs look better or worse. Below are some of the power consumption figures from same test that every TV has to go through. I highly doubt that OLED draws more power than this Mini LED. Even 83" OLED draws 35% less power than 75" TCL.

          Sony 77" A80K OLED - 629kWh/year

          Sony 83" A90J OLED - 765kWh/year

          Sony 85" X95K LED - 1076kWh/year

          TCL 75" c835 Mini LED - 1130kWh/year

          • +2

@dealhunter52: They arent biased, but they arent done right either. I have been chatting personally with the person who does the rating.

A good tip is to export the energy ratings .csv file, as it has all the actual watts figures (avg and max).they use for these tests. Way better than the stickers.

For example, I took a power meter to test a few cheapy tvs (Eko, JVC, Ffalcon Polaroid etc) to see how they compare to a LG, Samsung, Panasonic, TCL etc).

Now I knew a couple of them have the same LG Panel. The cheap TV energy sticker was roughly double the LG TV. 250 vs 480kwh/yr.

However, I noted the cheapy had white ghosting all around the edges. The backlight was set on max by default.
Once I turned the backlight down so both TVs look the same, the energy usage of the cheapy and the actual LG panel were basically identical.

So these stickers are misleading. The tests should be the same image/ video/ audio played at the same brightness / volume for the same period of time.

This was a massive eye opener for me..and gives some insight why a cheaper set may last less time (backlight is getting flogged/ TV is hotter).

A review i read suggests this is absolutely the case for these mini LED tvs and the avg run time energy usage doesnt match the sticker. BUT.. I have felt them in store and they are hot as hell
.so dont know what the truth is.

          • +1

@dealhunter52: This site has the avg power consumption of the mini led 75 at basically half the max. According to this, the mini led uses 172 watts on avg, compared to 120 watts on the listed sony OLED.

As an FYI, the standard TCL 75 (p635) uses the same 120 watts of power as the 75 OLED. But the P635 doesnt have Dolby Vision support, so wouldnt get anywhere near as bright as the OLED.

            https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/42b42c18

            • @tunzafun001: Well, there you go. That's still roughly 50% more power consumption than Sony OLED according to those figures.

              • @dealhunter52: Indeed…on avg ;) ….if those numbers are correct. ..and a shat tonne more than an OLED or basic back lit LED at max (but in fairness it has a brighter max output).

        • I used to have a sweet powerboard that would shut off the slave ports when the appliance on the master port switched off. it stopped working properly and I can't find a replacement :( you know of any?

          • @spendybeans: Check your states energy program. In SA its the REPS program. Auto switch off powerboards are free through YESS company. As are LED globes.

      • +1

That’s akin to considering a Great Wall then walking away with a Landcruiser ute.

        • That would be correct analogy.

        • -1

Turning on its head these days. Great wall have better EV / PHEV offerings than Toyota.

          • @tunzafun001: I’m referring to ute durability and functionality, not EV’s - which won’t be appealing for many years to a lot of ute drivers.

            • @eccaz: I get you… No doubt Hilux / Cruisers are kings of the 90's/ 2000's.

But Australia is in a big bubble of 10yr behind denial.

Get used to some crappy names such as BYD Yangwang.

              Based on a Gwagon/ Defender

All wheel steering and individual motor on each wheel.
              1100hp
              Infinite wading depth (it floats).
Turning circle radius zero (tank turns).

              https://youtu.be/kqFTEUEAdOY

That or a base model cruiser with an optional upgrade to an FM radio and rubber floor mats!

              • @tunzafun001: Incredibly useful features on vehicles that are likely to have quality control issues. Can’t wait for them to help make our roads safer.

                • @eccaz: While I agree with the sentiment (reliable as a Chinese watch), the reality is we havent built a bloody thing to buy as an alternative!
We can't do diesel particulates any more, so it is inheritantly safer for the community. Let alone the Lidar etc.
The max torque from every wheel from a standstill is a game changer. All wheel steering will mean all the muppets who dont actually need a big 4wd will actually be able to park it.
Electric Outie has been out for 10yrs now. Mine is at 160k km now and the only repair has been the electric motor mount rubber cracked (3 bolts, 5mins). Quite impressive for a first gen of its kind. No one will go back once they have driven an electric vehicle. Chalk and cheese. Be great if Australia could actually make something.

      • That's exactly what I did! I liked the reviews for the TCL and it's brightness was beautiful, but that power usage! I picked up the 77" CS for $3180 and have been enjoying it for a few weeks now. Pity it's not as good as the TCL for live sports, though.

        • Some TCL owners are complaining about juddery picture while watching sport. See below thread.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/770880

        • You reckon the C835 is better than a CS for sport? Which sport? Chess?

In my experience sport is the worst thing to watch on a C835, cartoons look great on it and tv shows/movies are ok (except for panning scenes).

I returned this tv after 2 weeks.

The tv would go into slow motion during random moving scenes.

I tried all different presets and followed some youtube guides.
Out of the box, putting it on the “movie” preset puts the whole video into slow motion .

A number of people have this issue and spoke about in the prev deal
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/770880

On top of poor pic quality, the UI is buggy and plex would constantly crash mid stream (3 other non tcl tvs in my house work perfectly fine).

Sonos playbar is also not compatible with the remote.
Despite turning into an IR if you disable bluetooth, you cannot control the playbar.
Sonos is aware of this issue and its both theirs/tcl problem…ongoing for a few months/years so dont expect a fix anytime soon.

    • I don't think the tv would "go into slow motion"

The frame interpolation software to make it look buttery smooth has it's limits, what you'd be seeing is sometimes the image displays at 144hz or whatever it is and some at the source displayed 24/30/60hz. It would just be a lower frame rate than the software makes some scenes appear and it would be quite jarring.

If you disabled the motion software then it would display everything at it's target frame rate and you would have no issue

      • +1

Ive tried every single setting and followed a few highly rated youtube guides to get the best settings.

No matter what i tried, the picture quality was unwatchable.

Some settings were better than others… but it was still too annoying to even sit through a full tv show.

Not to mention the ui constantly crashing and not being able to control my soundbar

        • Ive tried every single setting

          What is the input?

    • Yes I read those reviews also just after buying the 75C835.
But have had mine for a couple of weeks now and after alittle playing around with the settings (using some off Whirlpool) have found it pretty damn good.
Unfortunately it sounded like you might have had a dud TV but since others had the same issue I'm not sure about.

      • +1

Yeah i really wanted to like the TV but with how much effort it was just trying to get a decent picture that never fully looked good…just wasn't a good experience..

It seemed strange that so many past deals hadnt had one bad review…and then a few days after i bought, all these posts started coming in haha.
        Maybe a bad batch…

        • if you really wanted to like this TV then use in-build youtube app to play 4k movie trailer to test it.

          • +1

            @leetec: I did.
I was still getting picture issues on every app and picture setting I tried.

Thats not including how often the UI crashes.

            • @amityaaron: Most likely your one is faulty, I tried one hour of youtube without any problem, very satisfied with the display quality and sound.

          • @leetec: Interestingly enough YouTube was one of those things I couldn't reliably get to work smoothly.. each video on there is a 50/50 on whether it works or results in stuttery mess (maybe it's a VP9 vs AV1 encoding issue?)

Personally though we primarily use youtube for music/DJ streams like A State Of Trance, where visuals are not important.
And Jellyfin (fork of Emby / alternative to Plex) so far has been brilliant.

H.265 Main10/L6.0 files stutter a little regardless of settings, but if I just make sure to keep the profiles below that it's perfect.. 6 is massively overkill anyway even for quality snobs

Those issues aside, and after some picture tuning on every possible profile - I love it.. Better than anything my friends/family has despite costing less and I greatly prefer it over my LG Oled for living room use too. Would still choose Oled for PC but that will change pretty soon as the mini-LED backlight density goes up

      • It could be that something is wrong with their TV unit. That being said, the streaming apps on the TCL’s Google TV OS haven’t been perfect for me either. I run the PS5 for everything now (streaming etc) and the image quality and smoothness is completely better.

I’d say the processor in the TV isn’t up to running 4k HDR content from YouTube, but plug in an appletv or something else and you will likely have zero problems.

        • That's true. I've been using my Shield Pro 2019 on it and barely touched the Google TV on the TCL bar setting it up with my apps.

Got the TCL 55" C835 last weekend for $450 delivered brand new in the box and set up done at my place. The person bought it a year ago for the new home they were building, but the builder went bust so selling off extra stuff.

    • How the hell did you get it that cheap? What website is this?

      • The person bought it a year ago for the new home they were building, but the builder went bust so selling off extra stuff.
