hated the design, but i'll have to see it in real life before i make a decision. not a fan of these massive phones that samsung and HTC are going for

    • But Samsung and HTC release scores of phones, plenty of choice whether WP8 or Android is your thing.

  • +24

Apple people are spending too much time suing others rather than innovating.
I can understand competitor phone companies but suing woolworths is just ridicilous!!

    http://www.theage.com.au/business/apple-bites-over-woolworth…

    • +4

Come on Apple…woolies is a supermarket. Please spend your time to innovate your product not looking for trouble. You will make people hate you. Be friendly!

    • +2

They sure did - back in October 2009 Batman.

    • +2

You're terribly out of date mate. That lawsuit is over 3 years old…

      • who won?

        • +16

Look at the woolworths logo to see.

Judge laughed at apple and threw it out the door (why dont more judges have this common sense??). Apple also tried to patent an Apple…. surprisingly it failed.

        • +14

I for one am always walking in to the Apple store for a dozen eggs… It's just so confusing!!!

        • +2

but people do buy phones / phone products from Woolworths.

        • Completely by accident because this mistook it for an Apple store…

      • haha I came across it searching for the woolies pre-paid simcard yesterday,
forgot to check the date on the news

      • +1

On related front from mtech post above, this is as fresh as it can get about another groceries stored sued by Apple (dated 12/09/2012):

        http://www.digitaltrends.com/international/forget-samsung-ap…

    • As if Woolies would of ever had a Macbook pro or even an iphone 1 (let alone a 5) on its shelves … seems like they are getting more and more paranoid….

      • +3

But, but, they do have mobile plans, and they also sell Android phones. Maybe Apple lawyers are paranoid that their customers might get confused… </sarcasm>

My missus was thinking about the new iPhone 5 until she saw this table.

    http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/iphone-5-vs-the-competiti…

Unfortunately, compared with the Samsung Galaxy S3, the iPhone 5 has a worse resolution screen (strange resolution spec on iPhone 5 though), no NFC, no external storage, a worse resolution front-facing camera but carries a slightly higher price tag.

Additional important note: Users intending to buy iPhone 5, do remember that Apple has ditched Google Maps on iOS 6 in favour of their own map.

However, if you prefer Apple's walled garden approach, then the iPhone 5 would be a nice purchase. All up, the iPhone 5 is a nice phone, just not a revolutionary one, nor even the phone with the best tech specs.

    Caveat emptor.

    • +4

To be fair, the S3 is HUGE compared to the iPhone 5, It wouldn't directly compare them at all. I much prefer the screen and size of the iPhone, but there are other options which still beat it anyway.

      • I think 3.7" screen is a perfect size. I found my S2 is not that convenient to carry around. I actually like those Nokia Lumia phones and they also receive good reviews.

    • +2

Just like YouTube (which is also being removed as an in-built app), Google Maps will no doubt appear as a free downloadable app on the app store. Just because it's no longer shipped with the Google Maps app doesn't mean it is no longer available. It's actually a good thing they are decoupling Google Maps and Youtube, it means updates can/will come more frequently than with OS updates.

    • -5

      Get the facts

      • Screen quality is higher on the iPhone 5 at 326ppi
      • Rear camera is faster at f2.4
      • Youtube app is freely available on App Store
      • A6 processor is very fast, possibly faster than the S3 processor

Lastly, you need to realise higher specs don't equal a better phone or user experience. iPhones will always be faster and more reliable purely based on the limited hardware set which iOS needs to be tested against.

This is beneficial to developers too as they spend less time testing and more time developing!

      • +2

MOSTLY I am with you, but be careful.

1: 'possibly faster' is a pretty useless statement. It is very hard create specific number comparisons, but in all likely hood is is probably not faster (mostly load dependant though).

2: "iPhones will always be faster and more reliable purely based on the limited hardware set which iOS needs to be tested against." There is nothing to back up this claim. Using words like 'always' makes it very easy to shoot you down, and even without that the claim is tenuous at best.

App developers do see an advantage, though I would argue that is would be mostly quality rather than speed.

    • S3 may have a higher resolution, but it has a lower DPI (DPI always trumps resolution). Plus S3 is huge. It can't decide if it's a phone or a tablet.

Second, the resolution of the front facing camera is not important because the resolution already exceeds the resolution of the screen. That means if your doing facetime, it doesn't matter if you have a 1.2MP or a 20MP camera, it will look the same.

      • DPI only trumps resolution if you're holding the device very close to your face. The viewing distance must be taken into account when talking about dpi. There's a point of diminishing returns where eventually a higher DPI brings zero benefit.

I find the retina display is awesome when viewing small text e.g. on websites. However I found that it's impractical to view such small text, even though on a tiny 3.5" screen, that's the only way to fit a full webpage.

With a bigger screen e.g. on an S3, I can fit a full webpage with larger text, which doesn't benefit that much from higher DPI. Text looks perfectly sharp and clear.

High DPI is nice to have, but when it comes to actually using a device, once you hit a certain dpi, it doesn't really matter. Instead it becomes a pissing contest, a bit like camera megapixels. (speaking of MP, I really hope all phone manufacturers stop at 8MP and work on improving sensor quality! but yeah I'm dreaming sigh.)

It's interesting - when tech specs are in favour of Apple, they get quoted everywhere. When it is in favour of the competition, suddenly technical specifications are not important at all.

Also, interestingly, DPI never seemed important to iphone users when the iphone still had a blurry 165dpi screen, even though other phones had much sharper, clearer screens (e.g. droid/milestone from 2009 at 800x480, 252dpi - just slightly below the new ipad's 264dpi). The moment Apple releases a high-dpi phone, screens are suddenly all about dpi.

      • Steve jobs said it himself, once you exceed 300dpi it becomes impossible for the human eye to distinguish between the pixles at the typical viewing distance. But since the s3 is bigger and you doing need to bring it so close to your face to read text the dpi is of even less significance. Its probably why the new galaxy Note 2 has a sub-300 dpi screen - it just doesn't need such a high dpi since the typical viewing distance would be larger.

      • Both of you are right, who cares about this little difference in spec. I only made the point because jmi was making a decision partly based on screen resolution when the difference between the two phones is only negligible.

  • +2

Pretty good price, disappointing phone considering their competitors though.

At this point in time you are just losing too much from the restrictions Apple place on their App Store.

  • +5

I'll stick to my JB 3GS :) though the S3 looks sooo tempting.

  • +2

Give it 2 months and you will see the Samsung S3 4G - I know there is already one being tested for "A tick" approvals.

    • +1

According to Virgin they're expecting the S3 4G in around 3 weeks

    • +1

Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE/4G will be available from Optus on 20 September.

Will be available from Telstra 30 days later.

    • +1

I thought Optus is doing a pre-order at the moment for SGS3 4G, with availability 20th September 2012. Not 2 months, more like a week :)

  • iPhone 5 will sell out the first day even at RRPs. Most iPhone 4 users will need to upgrade soon. After 2 years, the phones start to have hardware qirks. Not happy about another SIM change… Nano SIM… !@#!@#!

Until the LTE frequency support information is available, it may not be safe to get one from Kogan. If it is an "universal" LTE phone, then it would be very interesting. But, if we (AU customers) get a version that works for Telstra and Optus LTE but not the other LTE bands, then depending on where Kogan sourced the phones from, 4G support may be an issue (but then again, most areas don't have 4G coverage).

    • The Freq. info is already available. See above. If you mean Freq info from Kogan e.g. which exact version then NFI.

    • +2

totally disagree on iphone 4 users needing an upgrade. I just switched to Live Connect from Telstra now that my contract is up. Going from $44/month to $12/month. I hope it lasts for another two years and I'll get the Iphone 6S or whatever we're up to at that point.

      • +2

        Lol

      • Don't be silly.. in 2 years, you're only up to 6. you need to wait 3 years for the S.. :P

      • I also own an iPhone4. I won't be surprised that we experience more performance issues with the iPhone4 with newer apps. It's smart business to make your app support all devices, but the iPhone4 market will have shrunk sufficiently that many developers won't care all that much. I see the same thing now with people complaining that an app doesn't work on their iPhone3 variants.

    • Yes, alot of iPhone 4 customers who purchased at launch are all off contract now and eager to upgrade to something new. Be that Android ir iPhone 5.. whichever you desire. ~

  • +13

    OMG! WHAT AN UGLY PHONE!

  • Minimum $19 delivery. So only $81 cheaper than Apple. Not interested in buying from Bogan.

    • +1

i expect they don't come with an Apple Warranty either ???

      • +2

That's my understanding upon further reading. Having had to change my 4S 3 times I'd prefer to stick with local stock.

        • +1

i also assume you wont be able to get an out of warranty replacement either from Apple ? So after a year, you're screwed if you break the phone…

        • -6

Apple releases new phone every 6 months anyway and die-hard fans are willing to change their phone (i have seen many people did that)…

        • +7

Apple releases new phone every 6 months

No they don't, they are yearly…

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_iOS_devices#iPhone

        • That is correct. No warranty from Apple, must be sent back to Kogan who send back to …

      • -1

I thought Apple warranties were global?

        • -1

What he said. It's global warranty.

        • +5

No they are not. Read Apples Warranty from their website:

          http://www.apple.com/au/support/warranty/homepage.html

"This warranty does not apply: ……..(5) to a product or part that you did not purchase from an Authorised Apple Reseller; (6) to a product or part located outside the country where the retail purchase was made; (7) to a product or part for which you cannot provide a local warranty card issued by Apple after registration (only in countries where Apple requires warranty registration)"

Thus, when buying from Kogan, who imports the item, you are buying from

          i) An Un-authorised reseller
ii) May or may not be purchased from Australia

If you want to confirm, ring Apple Care.

        • +1

No need to confirm or call Apple, the warranty is NOT GLOBAL, you buy in Australia, you need to fix or replace by Apple Autsralia, If you buy from UK, you need to get fix in UK or replace by UK Apple, and so on if you buy from Malaysia, it needs to get fix or replace in Malaysia, no question ask.

Because if you get it from Malaysia/Singapor/Australia etc Duty Free, the salespeople will tell you, iPhone/iPad warranty is GLOBAL, they are wrong because they just want to sell and you are gone…you will not go back in there another time.

        • I believe only iPhones don't have global warranty. iPads do. If you read iPad warranty t&c's you'll see it's different than of iPhone.

  • +3

    What's in the box

    ● SIM injector tool

lol the nano sim is so small you need to inject it apparently…

  • +9

what an ugly phone! Apple has lost its magic. But i guess it is very appealing to those iSheep with nano size brain :)

    • maybe it punches above it's weight ?

    • +1

I presume your negative vote is against Kogan? Can you explain why you rather buy from eBay than Kogan?

      • +1

        better PayPal protection perhaps ?

        • Hmm, PayPal vs ACCC - who wins?

        • +7

          for a buyer, PayPal…

        • You seriously rely on PayPal for protection? They let me down once on an "open and shut" case. See http://www.paypalsucks.com for reasons why you should not trust PayPal.

      • If you explore a bit there are much cheaper ways to buy things like this than through Kogan.

PayPal is pretty disgusting but I trust them over Kogan any day. Having dealt with the ACCC a few times I know how useless they are plus the amount of cheap shit rebranded as Kogan doesn't give me any faith in them.

    • +2

Negging is for the deal, NOT the product.

  • +4

I am waiting for lumia 920 availability to decide between sg3 and L920, not going to buy IP5

  • +1

Battery life looks disappointing. Only 8 hours claimed by Apple.

    • that's 8 hours on 4G…

      • +3

        Says 3G www.apple.com/au/iphone/specs.html
It's actually UP to 8 hours, maybe a result of it being thinner.

        • +2

          http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/09/12/iphone-5-battery-lif…

While Apple added a number of new features including a bigger 4-inch screen, a new A6 processor and 4G LTE connectivity, Apple was actually able to improve on the battery life with the iPhone 5.

        • I'm just going by what it says on the Apple website.

        • i think it was covered in the keynote, but i haven't seen it yet… The reviews are all saying the battery has slightly improved…

  • Sure it is $100 cheaper because it's from HK Apple store.

    • will the Hong Kong ones have the correct Australian 4G frequencies though…

or will we be getting a lot of pissed off Kogan customers when they find out it's only 3G ???

      • correct Australian 4g freq

  • +10

The UI still looks like a kids ABC learning application…

If your about to buy the iPhone5, just letting you there might be 5 nexus devices coming in November with much better specs and possibly a new version of android 'key lime pie', which will be equivalent to all the features iOS7,8 will receive in the next two years…

    • but the nexus devices still won't be iphones

      • +1

And a good thing that they won't be…

  • +18

    Interesting read
    http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-19557497

To use a car analogy, six years ago the iPhone was like a sexy new flagship model from BMW or Porsche. Today it's a Toyota Camry. Safe, reliable, boring. The car your mom drives. The car that's so popular that its maker doesn't dare mess with the formula.

    • +11

Yep. Every Tom, Dick and Harry now owns an iPhone. It's no longer unique. People buy it because they consider it as a 'safe', option and because they can't be bothered to do research on phone reviews. It's practical, but boring… Just like a Camry.

But that's a sign the iPhone era is now over. It's no longer special or magical, it's just another smartphone,it's design and innovation now hampered by people who think you can't change a winning formula.

      • +1

More or less. I'm a GNex user myself, will probably be using Nexus devices from now on until someone drastically changes the playing field (and no, the Lumia 920 is not that. It's a table-stakes phone with a decent camera that I rarely use). But when my mother asked me what phone to get, I happily endorsed the iPhone 4S. For better or worse, even the stupid or tech-averse can use one.

      • +3

Hey, I drive a Camry… then again, my friends did ask why I don't wear a cardigan ;)

    • +2

This was also an interesting statement "This is what happens when a company is too cheap to invest in research and development. Did you know that Apple spends far less on R&D than any of its rivals - a paltry 2% of revenues, versus 14% for Google and Microsoft?"

      • +8

This was also an interesting statement "This is what happens when a company is too cheap to invest in research and development. Did you know that Apple spends far less on R&D than any of its rivals - a paltry 2% of revenues, versus 14% for Google and Microsoft?"

Why research when you can sue? It's a much easier and cheaper way to kill your competitors.

      • +2

Considering Apple's revenue from the iPhone product is more than Microsoft's revenue from its entire product range, I wonder how that works out in actual $$$ terms.

        • +1

Considering Apple's revenue from the iPhone product is more than Microsoft's revenue from its entire product range

Somehow I find that hard to believe. Microsoft sells a LOT of copies of Windows. Afterall there are hundreds of times more PCs out there than there are iPhones.

You got any sources for this?

  • +1

What has the look of the phone got to do with weather or not it is a bargain, based on that 99% of bargains on this great sight would be littered with negatives!

    • +8

What has the look of the phone got to do with weather

it changes when it rains ?

      • Woowee (is that how you spell it ) you picked up a typo the substance is correct, but not the spelling I must remember that the spelling is more important than the substance.

        • +1

          spelling can change the substance.

    • +11

99% of bargains on this great sight

      Should've gone to Specsavers.

  • +1

Also I think it is time to start a bit of discussion in the forum on PayPal and PayPal protection. I get the impression that people think that it's the safest way to pay when in fact that is not true.

    • +2

the safest way to pay is COD

      • +2

I prefer sending money through Western Union

      • +4

COD is certainly not safe AT ALL. The seller can send you a brick, and you have to pay the post office before you can open the package to discover that there's a brick inside.

  • First time trying to buy from Kogan so a noob question. Do they charge full payment upfront during checkout or when the item is ready to ship?

    • Ruslan won't lift a finger, unless your CC is charged the full amount.

      • +1

I'm pretty sure most online shops don't ship till they have the money.

        • Quite a few won't charge your card the full amount till they ship.
