I dont know at this point if you can learn anything else from jv!

  • +5

I have news about external displays and refresh rate!
So far Intel Macbooks were gutted by a bug to only 60Hz (MacOS from Big Sur to Ventura, worked fine in old Catalina). I made big fuss about it with Apple Support.
But I just checked it on MacOS Sonoma and 144Hz @ 4K works!!!! On Dell G3223Q at least.

    • My setup contains 2x G3223Q with my M2 Max MBP, both running at 4k 144hz with VRR. Does not skip a beat.

      • +2

Yea, the bug (DSC) was only affecting Intel Macs.

      • +1

        Do you use a dock?
I can’t seem to find a dock which supports two 4k 144hz screens

        • +1

Don't use a dock; 2x DP to USB-C cables + dock for all peripherals and charging. I use all 3 USB-C ports on the MBP when on my desk, but I've got them routed/fixed in such a way that it takes 10s to plug them in and get going.

        • I have super expensive Caldigit TS4, but only one monitor. I'd risk to say it'd support two, because of DSC, which halves the required bandwidth.

    • Actually, I think apple "fixed" the bug that intel Macbooks still runs well.

  • +16

I am a Apple sucker, not ashamed to admit it, but in 2023 they are releasing 8gb ram, now that is a crime and to be frank an insult to customers, especially if you're going to use the word Pro in the description.

    • At least the 14 and 16 now starts with 18Gb of ram lol

      • Which are made of 3x6Gb modules instead of the old 4x4Gb meaning it’s kind of a downgrade?! LOL

        • Why did they not use the opportunity to put 2x 6GB in base model? Would have solved the 8gb id not enough issue

          • @Kanjus: You do know the ram is integrated into the processor… It's not like memory dimms

            • +1

@Felixrising: It's not in the processor but the system on a chip which can be fabricated however apple decides.

  • No hope for m3 to support dual monitors.

Will go for 14 m3 pro base

    Was awaiting MBA m3….

  • Anyone know if I can order this for store pick-up and the bring my current Macbook to trade in for a refund?

    • +3

Unless its pretty old and nasty you're much better off selling privately

      • It's fairly new but I'm just a sucker for a good matte black! Hopefully I can buy it, and trade in my current one for a straight up refund

        • I'm not sure why you are saying refund. It sounds like you want the full price you paid for it back?

          • @MrMoo: I asked Apple and they said "You can trade in an eligible product through Apple Trade In and receive an Apple Store Gift Card or a refund on your purchase." So I thought that meant I can give in my current laptop and get either a gift card or refund of its trade-in value when purchasing my new one.

            • @ryanv42: That is correct you can get something back based on it's trade-in value. But when you see the trade in value you may not be happy with how much they offer. But yes you can definitely get some money back for your old laptop.

              • @MrMoo: Ah okay. Thanks for letting me know!

        • You can find out how much you get for trade ins online. Hint; it won’t be much and no where near a “refund”.

        • Refund window is 2 weeks. So if you bought it more than 2 weeks ago, you’ll get the same trade-in rate as everybody else

  • Is this good for machine learning?

    • +4

      Only with 1 chrome tab

    • +5

Yes, you'll learn not to pay this for an 8GB machine ;-)

Seriously, though, if you buy an high end model, the answer is probably not yet. Most of the machine learning models like CUDA which is nVidia only. Also they like lots of VRAM. It depends what you want to do.

      • -1

VRAM is a non issue, since you can configure up to 128gb of high speed ram which is similar to gddr6 in bandwidth (400gbps vs 500 ish on the 4070 ti) which can lead to some edge cases where it even outperforms a 4090 due to the memory size

        • Which laptop is good for machine learning ? I will be studying in IT(major: Artificial intelligence). Don't know exactly which specs will be fit for me :(

        • +1

You're not wrong. Only thing is, 128gb memory will cost you $8k. That's enough for a nice workstation with dual 4090s or four 3090s + nvlink.

Such a joke considering nand price is through the floor right now.

          • @snep: How on earth is a workstation the same as a laptop which you can literally take anywhere and be as productive given this does not crawl to it's knees when not connected to power?

            • +1

@dealsucker: You're missing the forest for the trees. It's ridiculous to be paying thousands of dollars on top of a $5000 machine for a hundred dollars worth of flash - but evidently Apple can effectively charge what they like. I was making an apples to oranges comparison (if you'll forgive the pun) to drive that home.

Although now that you mention it, I do prefer remoting in to a workstation for that kind of workload any day. No worries about battery life under load, more powerful and versatile, cheaper… I suppose if you regularly take your laptop to places without internet to work, it could be handy? Whoever that applies to, I just hope their boss is footing the bill.

    • 8GB RAM it’s enough for you to power on your Apple machine and start learning how to use it.

    • +3

@ALBastru:Yups, it's good for machine learning as it teaches you not to part way with money on marketing.

    • +1

Only as a thin client, to run everything on the remote server. But the cheapest air, or any other laptop would work as well.

If for machine learning you'd like to play with deep learning, something with nvidia card may be better. But running your code from the remote server is not necessarily bad option.

    • human learning only, sorry

    • +1

Buy a pc with an nvidia gpu instead.

  • so does M3 have ray tracing now?

    • +1

      Yep

    • +4

      Yes.

any games to play on a mac = no yet

      • And not just that, games like RE the village can only be bought at the Apple Store which is way pricier than steam. I’m having a blast playing Baldur’s gate 3 via steam on my M1 Pro 16 so I hope more games will come out via steam

        • I have the iphone 15 pro max I preordered RE village and I am blown away on how good it runs iwth ray tracing…. so the M3 must be good.

      • +1

@OnlineShopper123: Sorry to say, but you can play Chess that comes preloaded with the machine.

        • looks very realistic with ray tracing. truly immersive experience

      • I remember there being a huge thing around Apples Game porting toolkit that translate DirectX games without additional dev work and reasonably well (Eg, triple A games like Cyberpunk and Diablo 4 above 60 frames) , has there not been any improvements since then?

  • +5

Wait til next back to school stack with cash back plus free AirPods.

8g memory version approx 2.5k shame

    • Does the back to school offers stack with edu store discounts?

  • +3

If patient, back to school promo will start in about 2 months, likely deal free Airpods 2nd gen again alongside these prices

    • Did they give out AirPods even with the newest models the previous years?

    • +2

It will be alongside standard education prices, not AOC.

  • If you buy from the education prices, can you claim a further 10% back from the airport if you leave with it?

    • Remember that if you intend to bring it back then you will need to declare it. Only 900 allowed tax free. Can pool with family members to get higher threashold. Google it.

      • I know it’s a little dodgy, but what if I leave the box back with family overseas, how would they know I didn’t buy it or receive it as a gift from overseas? Do I need to declare still?

Btw, what do you mean about this the $900 limit? Do you mean that the item can only be a max $900? So on a 3000 dollar laptop I’d get a back of $90 back?

        • My recollection is that you save the $300 on leaving then you declare it back on arrival and pay gst on the current value….

        • +1

Really depends if you get stopped. You will get mixed reports. Not everyone has to report to customs when they land

        • I have meant that if something you take out and in is below $900 then you do not need to pay gst on return.

You will submit your tax invoice when you apply for gst. I think they will see it as a returning laptop. I do not think it worth it to play games with customs.

        • +1

99% you will be fine, 1% you will have to pay back the GST.

Have on several occasion gotten GST refund on goods from $300 - $5000 and had family members bring it back to be safe. In saying that, I've never been stopped once so I could have carried all of those items back with me and it wouldnt have been an issue.

  • -3

A lot of 8GB Ram talk and how 8GB is embarrassing at these prices. I agree BUT the 8GB model is there for you to spend $$$ to upgrade to 16GB. Apple get's an extra few hundred dollar profit margin for a $20 chip. C'mon people, marketing science yo.

    • +8

The worst thing is the one with the vanilla M3 does not even have an option to upgrade the RAM to 16GB.

To get 16GB you need to step up to the one of the M3 PRO versions for at leat $800 extra

      • +4

Custom build from Apple +$300 to get 16GB.

      • +2

Again, it is so you spend hundreds more for a $20 ram upgrade chip. it is excellent marketing from Apples point of view, the very reason you cannot go buy a 8gb chip for $20 is the reason you are forced to spend hundreds more to get the 16gb model.

      • +2

        This is not true.
You can upgrade regular to either 16 or 24gb.

  • +3

You can stack 10% discounted Apple GC from Coles.
    Check the deal

    • Will this work fine getting the edu discount?

      • You use 6 gift cards when purchasing online

      • +2

If you add the gift card value to your Apple account before your purchase there is no limit on the amount of cards you can use.

  • -7

    Not a bargain.

    • +7

Its 10% off RRP you donkey

      • -1

I like how you Apple cultist clowns consider "10% off" a bargain.

        • +3

Sure the site may be called OzBargain but this is the "deals" section. Considering you can get from $200-$500 off a JUST RELEASED flagship computer from Apple which can be doubled with 10% off GCs is a dam deal.

          • @AircraftFreight: Except Apple is overpriced garbage. Vanity products designed for the dumb masses who are prepared to pay a premium for looks.

            • @SvcKpc: The only person who is dumb here is you. Find me a laptop with the exact same specs, performance on and plugged off, same spec screen, speakers, build quality, battery life and on top excellent aftersales for ANY price. I am waiting

              • @dealsucker: There literally isn’t one and that’s when the apple hater weirdos go quiet.

Surface is the Same price or more for sub par specs

There isn’t anything close to specs build etc for the same price or cheaper. None. Zero

            • @SvcKpc: I've had a lot of laptops and worked in IT my whole life and my 2016 MBP is by far the most robust laptop I've had.
It has had a couple of issues that were from manufacturing defects but Apple has fixed them for free at the local apple reseller.
It cost double what I have previously paid for a personal laptop.
I've taken it travelling around the world a lot, including a trip of 9 months.
I would definitely buy another when this eventually dies.

              • -8

                @Geoff-bargain: Don't care, Apple fanboy.

                • +3

@SvcKpc: They made justifiable arguments, whereas you just resorted to name calling.

    • Explain?

      • -2

Those specs don't even come remotely close to justifying the price point. It's not rocket science.

        • Do you have an alternate purchase at the respective price points?

          • -2

@ihfree: Yeah, the Zenbook OLEDs that were on sale recently. Half the price, far better panel, no closed garden ecosystem, 16gb+ ram.

            • +1

@SvcKpc: Go away and annoy someone else.

              • -2

@dealsucker: It's not my problem when embarrassing Apple fanboys like yourself cannot justify the embarrassing cost for their vanity hardware. You're hopeless mate.

                • @SvcKpc:

                  no closed garden ecosystem

Mac isn't a closed ecosystem at all. You can install anything you want on them. You're getting iOS and macOS confused, which shows how little you actually know about the product you're commenting on.

                • @SvcKpc: You think i or anyone else will take advice or pay heed to your absurdly obtuse drivel? Amuse yourself.

                • @SvcKpc: Gee, you are really having a hard time here.

I just saw your other response to me got unpublished and then noticed that you're just throwing "apple fanboy" words around and harass others.

  • +6

M3 Max is where it's at. Fully specced out 16" M3 Max with 128GB ram and 8TB ssd is only A$10,270.70 with the AOC discount.

Looking at Apple's performance claims though, you'd only upgrade to one of these if you're making $hit-tonne of money as a work machine - only 80% faster cpu and 50% faster GPU vs M1 Max.

    • +4

      "only"

80% is a huge leap given what intel gave us when the CPU performance stagnated.

    • If you employ someone and pay them 100k a year and they are able to increase their throughput by just 10% from that 80% Faster CPU and 50% Faster GPU it already covers that fully specced $10k laptop.

  • +1

Does this mean you don't need a .edu account to get the 10% discount through this website? I'm confused.

    • -1

      Correct

    • No you don't. Just order it normally and preferably get it delivered. They dont ask for student id's

  • +1

Black Friday is not far. It might work out cheaper to get the giftcards then via education store and 10% cashback (usually up to $100) from cashrwards.

    • +1

      usually exclude new models

      • +2

Last year new Macs were included. Only iPhones weren’t

        • Having a look it included m1 and m2 Mac’s. Might be worth waiting as if they offer $400 gift card for a MacBook Pro 14” it would make it a similar price to a MacBook Air 15” with 512gb
(Which might get $240 if similar to last year) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/737651

  • +7

Whilst this deal is indeed a nice discount from retail, I really don't recommend any of these unless you have a specific need for M3 silicon. At these price points (8gb ram models mostly) you are doing a disservice to yourself by purchasing a system with 8GB of non-upgradable RAM. Considering that the RAM requirements for the operating system is slowly creeping up, it's only a matter of time before this starts being quite an issue, especially if you are swapping to the SSD excessively (which is also not replaceable).

For most people you are better suited to an M1 or M2 based Mac with 16gb RAM.

    • Apple is shrewd to introduce base M3 models of Macbook Pro 14 inch. While 16GB RAM is preferred, the choice of going with 13 inch Macbook Pro M2 with 16GB RAM upgrade is not as clear cut. We don't know whether Apple intends to release a 13 inch version of M3 Macbook Pro, or Apple intends to push people towards Macbook Air for people not wanting the better display.

It's a smart move from Apple, to release these models first this time around.

      • +4

If anything, it's planned obsolescence. These machines appeal to those who want a somewhat "affordable" MacBook and don't understand the implications of low RAM. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of units are going to have premature SSD failure due to excessive swapping, or just feel too slow in a few years time due to a lack of RAM, leading people to make yet another Apple purchase. Good for business, not so great for consumers.

        • +2

These machines appeal to those who want a somewhat "affordable" MacBook

?? Those that want an affordable MacBook would just get an M1/M2 Air 13". And if they understand RAM they'll upgrade it. I don't think the people looking at M3 Pros are just getting it for the brand lol
