Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook (Snapdragon 7c/4GB RAM/128GB eMMC, 13.3" FHD) $212 Price Beat + Del ($0 C&C) @ The Good Guys

2380

Looks like The Good Guys will "Price Beat" on the Duet 5 4GB model down to $212, not sure who they are price beating but nearly 80% off RRP. Was looking at the 8GB model but this is too good of a deal to pass up. Not sure how long this will last.

Pair with Commbank Yello $30 off $200 to get it down to $182.

Edit: Must click "Price Check: Pay Less with PRICE BEAT" button or try to navigate away from the page to capture the deal.

      • Ahh I glazed over the specs and saw 4GB and concluded it's the same as this deal - thanks for the clarification.

  • I don't know about anyone else but I haven't received an update since December 13 stating that they will have mine ready to send on the 25th of December

  • +6

They gave me a shipping refund after tracking my order using the chat bot

    • Thanks. Just got the same when chat bot offers to refund delivery if 'you're happy to wait'.

      • Tried multiple times and am not being offered a refund on delivery

    • Thanks I just did the same!

    • Thanks, did the same. I think this is something new, I did check few times last year but never been offered any refund.

      • Do you have to attempt to cancel?

All good, just had to enter my order details and it says there's been a delay and they can refund the shipping if you're happy to wait

        • no need to cancel, i just brought up a chat, chose "track my order" i think, then enter your details.

          • @DamonT: Did a real person offer the shipping refund or the bot?

            • +1

@cloudy: It was the bot. All automated

              • @DamonT: damn, not offered to me

                • +1

@cloudy: Strange. If it's any help that was the first time I'd contacted them via any means since the purchase.

    • Did you actually get the refund yet?

Still waiting for mine, 6 days on

      • Nope

        • Still no refund?

          • @cloudy: I went through the chat again after not receiving the refund but this time round “spoke to a human” via chat. She was able to process the refund for me. I received the refund after 2 days.

          • @cloudy: Received refund on the 29th

How is everyone going? I have received the two emails it seems most got with the $20 credit and the supposed 25th December dispatch and nothing else.

I get it was a price error but would they treat all customers this way for high-demand products or are we getting a special lack of service for the price error?

*Edit, contacted support chat, it took me maybe 10 attempts to actually get to talk with someone. I constantly received an "we are closed message" even during the business hours they provided…

The agent said you got $20 and you will probably get it in by March, read the email you got sent on 8th December. Ingonred when I questioned the 25th delivery I was given as an update refusing to acknowledge it even exists and then disconnecting. This happened with two agents.

    • +1

I already received mine yesterday. I am in Sydney.

      • +1

Did you get dispatched updates prior?

        • Yes, see my previous reply.

  • +1

Still haven't heard a thing here

    • +1

Yep, still left in the dark here also. I have so many uses for it….just don't have it atm lol

      • +1

Give me some use case ideas for when this finally shows up in 2025

        • +2

I was gonna use mine at work to look at non work related items on it like OzBargain hehe

  • +2

For those of you who are still waiting, I tried multiple attempts over the last few days to get a clear ETA and kept getting told its on back order. Finally got told yesterday that stock is expected by mid Jan. And finally got a "Order picked up" (its with the courier company) notification with the expected delivery date of 17/01. Fingers crossed I get it by then.

Posting this to let others wiating know that the comms seem to be accurate in terms of more stock coming and that if you really need it don't cancel your order just yet!
Not the best customer experience though.

    • +3

Is the moral of the story to call up and hassle them?

    • +1

Damn, I keep forgetting that I ordered one of these!

      • +1

Lol. Same, thank god for these posts to jog my memory

  • +3

I just got a text message to say that "Your order is ready for collection!"

  • +3

I managed to follow and get the shipment refunded. Thx.

For others who are keen to get the shipment refund, find way to get the webchat (robot) and choose track the order, then key in your name, phone number, email address and order number most importantly, then robot will mention there's delay and ask options to choose discuss or happy to wait,

if you choose happy to wait, then robot indicate will refund the shipping fee in next 2 business days, happy to wait.!! I was told it's likely arriving Feb when I spoke to Good guys team today.

  • After all this waiting I'm second guessing this purchase and am thinking of refunding and getting something like this:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/825126

Seems way better bang for buck what do my fellow patient ozbargainers think?

    • +1

Hang in there mate, I got told mid Feb but then got a text yesterday to pick it up (which I did)

      • @montorola First impressions?

        • +3

First impressions is that the box is small and heavy !

But I'll have a play around with it on the weekend, no time today (thanks to being in a relationship :(

    • +1

The Duet 5 doesn't support 4K media playback, it seems ChromeOS is super gimped on 4k playback 😂 so SMB over VLC is out of the picture unless it's 1080p- for 4k rips, if you've got something transcoding at that end (Plex etc), audio is shit and kinda thin/tinny

at 1080p up close the subpixels kinda put me off as areas of colours have that patchy look to it (at a distance this won't be noticeable)

Sideloading apps on ChromeOS means you have to boot it in Developer Mode, and when you do enable developer mode you're always goddamn prompted at boot to boot form internal disk

Anyway I'll probably load up prime video on it it's probably at best for productivity/remote desktop'ing, I'd rather use Chrome browser with adblock/addons for adfree youtube

    • Just an update 2160p/4K rips should work with h264

But seems h265/HEVC is out of the picture and cant be hardware accelerated

  • +3

Did anyone actually get their shipping refund from the online chat bot? I did the chat thing 6 days ago, still nada

    • Nope, still nothing on my end either.

  • I cancelled my order today as they keep saying March Eta.

  • +1

    Nothing here either.
I guess we will lose half our warranty.

    • +2

Surely they would honour warranty beginning from date of delivery?

  • +3

52 days after ordering - it arrived.

I spoke with a really helpful person at GG last week who told me that the store my order was allocated to still had 60+ on back order.
He transferred my order to another store on the other side of the country that had stock who could fulfill the order straight away.
Got notification of picking that afternoon, dispatch the day after and arrived today (5 days later).

Have faith people - maybe even try to get your order moved to another store to speed up the process.

    • Who did you speak with in GG out of interest? I tried the chat function and the rep i spoke with couldn't really help much apart from saying yeah its on order and eta is Feb / March, etc.

    • I went on Live Chat and asked for this

They said my elected store was Springvale, they also said that all stores nationwide are waiting for the backorder so they weren't sure how you managed to get one

They have now changed the store to Melton which apparently has no orders to it.

      Thanks

    • Doing this changed my order from ready for picking to on order I deeply regret doing this

  • +2

Just got an SMS/email saying order is ready for dispatch, and will be delivered in 2 days.

  • My Online Order Tracking has gone from;
Status Description: Your product is arriving from our supplier and will be picked for you shortly. Youll receive an update from us as your order is ready to despatch.

    To;
Status Description: Your product is awaiting picking. Check back later for an update.

    I don't know when this has happened, I've only just checked this tonight. I haven't received any emails or SMS since the 11/12 wien I got the;
Unfortunately, we've been advised by the supplier of a delay and that we can now expect to receive your order around week commencing 25-12-2023 . This is still a best estimate and subject to change, but we wanted to let you know ASAP. Sincere apologies for the delay.

    Fingers crossed, I guess.

    • Just checked the Online Order Tracking again. Sometime in the last few hours it's updated to;
Status: Ready to Collect or Dispatch.
Status Description: We have now picked your product and it will be despatched in the next business day via Tolls/Aust Post.

Still no SMS or Email instructing of an update.

Just received my email and SMS with Toll tracking information. Should be at my door by Friday.
        Good luck, everyone.

        • The Brainiacs at The Good Guys decided to use Team Global Express to deliver to a PO Box. TGE don't deliver to PO Boxes…

  • +2

Delivered this morning. Tracking showed it was picked up from Chatswood by the assigned courier company brought back to the Botany depot yesterday and delivered this morning in Upper North Shore (NSW). All in, 53 days since order placed on Black Fri 24th Nov. Nett price paid $157.42. JB-HiFi showing the same model 'on sale' at $599, representing 73% discount. Excellent bargain.

    • How did you get $157.42?

  • +4

    Apologies, it's $157.47.

    $212 + delivery $8 = $220.
less $30 cashback from Commbank Yello (spend 200 get $30)
less: $20 late delivery store credit from GoodGuys
    less: $7.53 cashback from Cashrewards.com.au
less: $5 GoodGuys voucher from SnackBack app back in Sep/Oct

    $220 - 30 - 20 - 7.53 - 5 = 157.47

    • Lol, nice combo

    • +2

I received mine yesterday. And this morning I received another $20 store voucher via email.

  • still waiting for an update, literally nothing since I paid back in November 😭

  • +1

    And it's shipped!

  • +1

Hope the 4GB doesn't disappoint those now getting the Chromebook.

  • +3

Sorry to hear of all of those who are still waiting to get their Chromebook. I was lucky enough to pick mine up same day as posting this deal (benefits of living in a rural town I guess?) but have been using it since and I've been really happy with it! Every now and then you can feel the sluggishness from the 4GB but overall it has been a beast for web browsing and basic day to day work. Good luck to everyone still waiting!

    • Did you disable android apps, which supposedly helps cut down RAM usage?

      • +1

No I didn't. Considered it but I still have uses for some Android apps on my Chromebook.

  • +2

Ok, after hearing literally nothing, i got the text today that it is arriving tomorrow, the saga may be coming to an end lol

    • +1

Yay, good to hear - it's worth the wait - I've been using mine primarily for web browsing with multiple tabs open and haven't had a slowdown (fingers crossed!)

    • +1

      still nothing here!

I never got the shipping refund that the chatbot promised me either!

"We appreciate your patience. You will receive a confirmation of your delivery fee refund within the next 2 business days

      Thanks for your time today"

That was what the chatbot told me over 2 weeks ago now

Now the chatbot is just ignoring my messages lol, great system!

  • Received texts just now for delivery. Let’s see if it appears.

  • I got my SMS/email yesterday and it arrived promptly today! Hopefully they keep the momentum and you all get yours soon.

  • What do people think about the display and speakers? Mine should arrive tomorrow.

  • What kind of mouse are you guys using with yours? I hate the silly touchpad style that all laptops have

  • Just sharing. Mine has just been shipped. But I followed the process to get the delivery fee refunded and it appears to have been successful. So it's worth a shot.

  • Anyone from Melbourne received their order? I’m still waiting.

    • +1

      Yep, me

  • Just received 1 of 2 order in Geelong, it doesnt seem to come with a stylus pen like the JB hi-fi one?

    • +1

No stylus pen with these ones unfortunately. I'll be on the lookout for one though.

  • You know what would be awesome right now? a Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook

  • +2

Does anyone have a cover for theirs or recommendations for one?

Mine is for a 12 year old boy for school use. It could get dropped etc

  • +3

Took me less than 1 minute and a few clicks last night to talk to the chatbot and get my delivery fee refunded. Doesn't even need to talk to a customer service agent at all.
The funny thing is, received a notification this morning that my order has been dispatched.
Not sure if it is just coincidental or that is how their system prioritises shipping - whoever follows up jumps the queue
Pretty happy to get $27.95 back ($20 voucher used already + $7.95 delivery refund) making this purchase an absolute bargain!

    • Did you actually get the delivery fee back? I did the chatbot thing 3 weeks ago and never actually received any money back

Got on the chatbot again a few days ago and it didn't respond to any messages

      • I got my money back not long after, I spoke to a human who had confirmed it

Go back into the bot and select the Refund option, it will link you with a human

        • Yeah finally got to speak to a human. The chat bot wasn't responding. Ended up deleting cookies. I find this website to be crap, I constantly have to delete cookies due to issues. The human said this:

"Those requests through our chatbot still need to be actioned manually by our team , however due to the high volumes of requests we are not able to get to these as fast as we can. Rest assured, I will action this for you now. Please allow up to 3-5 business days for your refund to be processed back into your original payment method"

So I guess I will wait and see

  • +1

Talked to support yesterday (finally). They told me there are ~500 orders & if Lenovo cannot fulfill then will refund everyone. No $20 voucher yet.
I guess the chances of our money being locked 2 months without success is higher & might need to admit the loss & move on :(

    • They are fulfilling and shipping, I got mine yesterday. You just got to be patient.

Maybe I lucked out, but my agent refunded me shipping, and gave me a $60 voucher. Deal of the century.

  • +1

Is it just me that has noticed good guys have gone from apologetic, to downright rude. E.g. I asked for an update today and was told 3 times there are only 2 options, wait for eventual deliver or cancel. When I said this is very poor customer service, the above was repeated.

  • This is pretty appalling from TGG. My partner has hers confirmed as shipped yesterday. I still have nothing.

I ordered mine 2 hours before her and my order number is several hundred infront. Are they picking people at random to actually get it?

    • I ordered at 4:15PM and my number was #1535043XX. Got it last week.

    One Weekend Review

Display is great color and brightness wise. The display is even better than the advertised 100% P3 coverage; and hits Rec2020 levels; which is incredible! Colours are reasonably accurate out of the box. It is limited by the touch matrix on top which can result in some fuzziness when looking at it close. Overall however, this is definitely an excellent display. It is only second to my Asus Swift X Creator OLED (which is the best display I own — even better than the latest and greatest Macbook Pro).

The build quality of this device is fantastic. The keyboard punched above its expectations and is something I'm very happy to do extended work with; it is short-travel, but feels pleasant and crispy typing on. I wouldn't say satisfying, but after typing out a ~4000 word document, I certainly would do it again on this keyboard. For fans of the Macbook Pro 2016-era "butterfly" keyboards, you will love this; it's that, but substantially better. This is considerably better than Surface keyboard covers.

The trackpad is average; a mouse is recommended; but it is not "bad". A slightly larger size, and full-trackpad even clickability would be make it better.

Overall, the chassis feels sturdy and premium, is thin and light; and very much feels like high-end device despite the bargain price. There is a very solid amount of aluminum; which is NOT a thin layer (like some cheap devices). The plastic parts (for better reception) feels very premium. In all honestly, given a cover is almost always used, I would have preferred Lenovo have stuck with a full-plastic chassis — the plastic they used for the reception parts is actually exceptionally nice feeling; and everyone would appreciate the weight reduction.

The fabric cover and keyboard has a great feel. No corners were cut here; it is very pleasant.

The responsiveness of the system is quite excellent, especially since it only has 4GB of RAM. Web browsing felt fast and snappy, even with quite a few tabs open and a Linux system running at the same time. I was quite wary of a 4GB tablet, however, in my actual use (watching youtube videos, booking flights across multiple websites and comparisons, emails/sheets, Linux shell open in the background), it was very snappy.

Touch screen sampling is excellent — I used my fingers to sketch and draw in the built-in canvas app, and it felt very smooth, accurate, and pleasant.

Over time, 4GB ram should prove to be a bottleneck resulting in less multitasking capabilities; however smart memory management (ZRAM in particular; and the optimised nature of ChromeOS) means this should function more as a ~6GB Windows device (if such existed).

The eMMC storage is not that fast — at least using CRDT, I get ~80MB/s sequential write, ~110MB/s sequential read, and an appalling ~2MB/s random read/write. This could be due to the Android subsystem, better ways to test are welcome. However, storage being slow is certainly not noticed on my system.

Wifi speeds are quite decent; no issues there.

The speakers are not amazing; which is troublesome given the lack of 3.5mm headphone jack. In particular, there is almost no bass. While there's no significant distortion, there is not a lot of colour and clarity to the sound. However, it is definitely not something you'd consider bad or terrible; unlike the Swift X Creator (due to its downward facing speakers).

Battery life is excellent. I clocked approx ~15 hours with moderate usage and I like my brightness up.

As a 13" inch device with a 16:9 aspect ratio, you will not want to use it as a tablet. Why Lenovo has made this a tablet is beyond me. That said, the cleverly designed cover retains its kickstand capabilities even in tablet form; which is a nice ergonomic touch, and there could be certain situations (e.g. watching movies); cooking in the kitchen, etc. I can see merit in this; and others may appreciate a large form factor tablet.

I do believe I/O is a significant limitation factor that makes this more of a "lifestyle" device than a daily driver laptop. Understandably, the thinness means that USB-A and HDMI are out of the question, however I believe daily drivers need at least 3x between USB-C and USB-A, 3.5mm, and a HDMI port. A dongle can certainly achieve this.

The cameras, both front and rear facing, are poor. They are barely useable. That said, you will be able to do video calls in a pinch. I would have preferred no rear camera and for the BoM to have gone to better speakers and/or 6GB of RAM.

    Conclusion

This is a great 'Chromebook' tablet for everyday tasks, and particularly excelling at media consumption. The display also makes light photo editing quite suitable; although don't think about video editing with 4GB of RAM and ChromeOS. It has great build quality, and while subjective, is very stylish in my opinion.

The price must be considered here — for $212 (or $152 in my case, as I received a $60 voucher due to late delivery), makes this an exceptional computing device for the quality, performance, and money.

    Highly Recommended

    • How much later was your delivery? Did you have to request the voucher or was it automatic

    • +1

WOW. $60 voucher instead of $20. that's great. I got the bag from Goodguys for $19. I'm wondering if you are buying a pen and what pen is best for this model?

      • What bag did you get? I need something to use the $20. A Good Guys $20 is not really worth $20 because their prices are pretty terrible compared to somewhere liek Amazon lol

        • +1

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/827394

It is my style and I went to store near me as they had in stock,

I was explaining the situation and checking with staff if they could offer better pricing of 13.3" silver Evol branded laptop pouch/bag which was $29, he offered $25 kindly. the laptop pouch wasn't decent and rather looked cheap with no functionality so I just got Evol Bryon 15.6 laptop backpack for $19. hope it helps.

          • @Ryoon: That backpack looks nice but it's pretty long for those that aren't tall

            • +1

@montorola: maybe but it's approx 40 cm long,

I take my laptop and duet 5 at the same time (not today) to work and it's good size for me.

It's alot smaller than the backpack I bought last year.

              https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07MK6J5NT/ref=ppx_yo_d…

I took this bag when I visited south Korea, I put so many things including a pair of shoes, a round box of yakult powder, 4 books and jumper so on.

I won't pay Evol 15.6 laptop back pack for $15 since I have many backpacks but I'm happy with coupon to get 1 bag since I don't find anything to utilize the coupon of $20.

    • How'd you get a $60 voucher? I still don't have mine yet, I'd say that is late delivery if yours was lol

  • I now believe earlier reports that asking for delivery refund might initiate earlier delivery of our orders. I requested for the delivery fee refund last week on wednesday. On thursday I got confirmation of the refund. Today monday I received an email that my order is on the way complete with tracking !!!

    • Idid the delivery fee refund 3 weeks ago, never got the refund and only just now got the email to say the order is on the way. It also says "Estimated Delivery by 13/12/2023" lol

The receipt also says order date was 23/1 even though I paid for it 2 months ago. There goes any chance of claiming the Minecraft etc, the deal ended at the end of the year

This whole thing has been a shambles tbh, I should have cancelled ages ago

  • +2

Finally got my device this morning. Typing this post on it. For $192 it's great!

  • +2

I hit up online help for an update, agent said they could reallocated my order to a different store with stock, and voilà tracking number provided 30mins later.

    • Lol @ the customer having to call up and ask for that and the good guys not doing it automatically

    • Unbelievable. Just did the same. Will be dispatch in the next few days! Why doesn't good guys automatically change stores to ones with stock is beyond me.
