Netflix Turkey Membership Cancelled on 24/02/2024 - Are You Also Affected? Vote on Poll

Hi all, a lot of people in the netflix turkey thread is saying their membership has been cancelled but did not specific the payment type.

I am trying to determine what the criteria of membership cancellation is, please vote only if you are on Netflix Turkey

Error if your membership is cancelled

Sorry this account is no longer active. Please sign up again or sign in to a different account.”

EDIT: Official "story" provided by netflix:

As per checking To protect members against unauthorized charges, we sometimes cancel accounts that show signs of unusual activity. It looks like your account was canceled for this reason.

They will even recommend you dispute charge via your card company to get a refund as they did not provide you with the service you paid for. So everyone go and get your money back and then buy Turkey Gift Cards ahaha Personally I recommend turgame 200TL gift cards if you order after 5pm they will arrive pretty fast.

Why did they bother cancelling our accounts then?

        • +1

Same reason airlines don’t let you sit in business class even if there is nobody sitting there. Or how you don’t get to buy a cheap Ferrari even if the dealership can’t sell it. Protecting the integrity of their product. You only get it if you can afford it/want it. You don’t want to pay - you don’t get it.

          • +4

@illusion99: I am suprised you compare Netflix to Ferrari or flying business. They aren't in the same category. You also make it sound like we hacked Netflix and used it for free. We just paid prices people pay in Turkey.

            • +6

@Mistredo: Im just pointing out your meager contribution means nothing to Netflix. And they would rather have you either pay aud pricing or nothing at all. But you are making it sound like Netflix is making a bad decision and is on the financial bad end of this deal by not having your money

              • +2

@illusion99: To be honest they did me a favour, meager contribution or not. Don't really care about their integrity with the meager content they have to offer. Wife said today SBS On Demand has better content. I suppose win-win in my case, $12 goes now into my monthy nbn account.

  • It was fun while it lasted. I've now moved two friends to their own profiles and signed up for $16.99AUD. Not a big increase without friends using my account.

  • What was everyone watching when you account got cancelled? :) :)

Türkiye gov now get less VAT to collect. 20% of VAT.
How are we gonna support Türkiye economy now?

    • +7

LOL would be quite funny if Turkey crumbles completely because OzBargainers are no longer paying for their Turkey Netflix subscriptions.

When I told them I was a frequent traveller between two countries and asked them what the solution to this was, this was the reply I got:

"You would be able to use the account in the country in which it was created while traveling outside you would have to use your portable devices like mobile phones, tablets or laptops"

I hope this helps someone before their account gets cancelled. Simply keep using Netflix on portable devices and hope that it won't get cancelled.

    • Is yours still working and are you paying with an Australian credit card?

      • +1

Unfortunately I was cancelled, that's why I contacted them. I even paid with a genuine Turkish bank account card thanks to a friend. So, I don't think the card location makes a difference for their decision of cancellation.

        • You should just get your friend to make the account and share the details with you

          • +1

@CodeXD: My friend also lives here. Even if he didn't, I don't think it would matter. The problem sits with using the Netflix account in another country regularly except where it was created.

            • @ozyack: Everyone should get their own, you get sick of worrying about other cnts. Good chance to get rid of the free loaders.

        • For me it’s crystal clear now they ban users based on IP of logins/streams and not due to CC or account payment method. Only ongoing viable solution will be to use VPN as permanent streaming method (with delay and buffering)

          :(

I've just signed up for the AU 16.99 plan. CBF playing hide and seek anymore.

I aint paying $20+ a month for their crap, just hit the old classics via my vpn and downloading what I need… long live the high seas…. rrrrrrr

      aye aye captain…

i too have been uninterested in committing to anything in Netflix due to a habit of them cancelling series etc… i might probably just pay this again whenever they have something im actually interested in watching…

      • There are no lock in contracts lol.

        • Yes, they're not like Foxtel.

And also when they release a new season, they release the whole thing in one go unlike Prime/Paramount.

    Hey,

Haven't read all the comments but judging from a quick skim not many people seem to try to get it reactivated.

Anyway, I was being billed on a WISE debit card and that payment information doesn't seem to register when I tried to sign up again.

Here's what worked for me if you want to reactivate in turkey:
    1. Turkey VPN (Nord worked for me first go)
    2. Revolut account, I believe its not like assigned to a specific country per se, so Netflix won't know their not a Turkish card company
** I wouldn't bother trying to Australian banks, each card has a serialised set of BIN numbers which Netflix will know its not a turkey card
    3. Generate a virtual card (Instant card)
    4. Enter your Revolut card details and reactivate the profiles (Don't worry their not deleted)
    5. SMS Verification
When I signed up years ago it just sends a 6 digit code to a turkey number, https://sms-activate.org/ worked for me perfectly
    6. Stream via Turkey VPN. I think it was a week ? or a month that we have to use a Turkish VPN until we get international access? I can't remember

Any questions, happy to help (:

    • when did you reactivate again?

      • Immediately after I found out the account stopped working

    • Are you saying your account wasn't cancelled?

      • It might be a little confusing for some of us, but I think most of us are In the same boat, my account was cancelled per se but it's more of a suspension until you reactivate.

I thought all my shows were gonna be deleted but my viewing history is still there so it doesn't look like anything has changed, it certainly does feel like I'm making a new account but in reality your just adding updated payment information

        • +4

Yes, it's the same for me, but I don't think resubscribing solves it. They will cancel your account again in the future, probably based on your IP, so the only solution would be using VPN forever.

          • @Mistredo: Agree. Cancellation is based on your non portable device IP is not in Türkiye.

    • Won't work for long if you stop using the VPN, I clarified with the customer service representative, they said that they now expect people to restart an account locally even if you travelling abroad for a short time, which is extremely ridiculous.

      • hey this is good insight, did the Netflix rep mention anything about timeframe? Just trying to set myself a recurring reminder to connect to VPN and browse Netflix a bit moving forward.

    • Interesting, let us know how long your this lasts.
Hopefully not cancelled straight away or you'd be better off just signing up in Aus instead of giving them another $12.

      • Hey,

Didn't get cancelled however I just tested signing up to Nigeria which was I think $16 on the 4k plan.

No geo restrictions in place, set up a new account and transferred my profile as they have removed my payment information on the account billed via turkey.

        • Alright nice. Report back after a while.

    • Hi dedextwt
Will you please explain exactly how to get a Turkey sms on the website?
      https://sms-activate.org/
      Thanks

      • Hey,

Looking back I remember topping up a balance but this would’ve been 2-3 years ago .

There’s much more simpler alternatives now so I’d suggest something like VSim there you top up and get a set amount of credit .

I honestly can’t figure out sms activate.org it use to be way simpler

    Stremio + Real-Debrid or offcloud
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/823241

1st Choice: RealDebrid, $16 EUR per 6mo <- the best
2nd Choice: Offcloud for onetime $39.95 <- if your tight on money

btw, for those using Offcloud, if you get playback errors, on streaming device, goto whatismyip.com, grab IP and add to Account > IP Addresses.

    • Do you use any other Stremio addons?

  • Just spoke to support on the 1800 number. The guy initiated a password reset for me so I can get back in and he told me to restart my subscription. Said he would not refund and it has to be done through my bank.

Looks like I can go through to the credit card page again in Turkish Lira but very reluctant to complete sign up and give them more money.

Any one else been able to restart with Credit Card again or get access to their account again?

  • Tip of the hat to the Netflix team - cancelling accounts just after the monthly cc payments were cleared, priceless!

I'm sure the team at NF are here for the comments - if you read this good on yas, was fun while it lasted.

  • Back to sailing

  • apart from requesting a payment dispute (which should cost Netflix money), how does it sound to request a copy of the personal information via the GDPR provisions?

    https://help.netflix.com/en/node/100629

    • You can already download your personal information from your account screen (you have to request and then wait a few hours) - not sure if a GDPR would yield anything additional.

Since Netflix told me to complain to my bank, in writing, I've lodged a complaint for 24 months of fees. I was only charged yesterday.

Committing fraud, what’s the worst that could happen.

  • Party is over after 2 years of no issues, will try the 6.99 plan and if ads are obnoxious back to the high seas.

  • Has anyone tried re-entering their payment details and then using the PingMe app to get the text message?

  • Also got the axe and was on TR gift cards. I guess I never use it anyway. adios

I was still on an Argentinian account because I couldn't be bothered jumping through hoops for Turkey (and didn't want to risk losing my cheap plan to save a few more bucks) - it too was cancelled. Looks like they're going after all accounts that aren't logging in / paying from the billed location.

  • Same issue, re-subscribed to netflix turkey and just using a VPN with wireguard for streaming, back up again.

    • How did you get past the asking for phone number to send a text confirmation? Im not using my CC like everyone else here but still got cancelled.

      • I didn’t use a credit card it didn’t work, my Netflix account was a historical Australia Netflix with phone number from many years back.

For subscription method I made sure I was on a Turkish vpn, subscribe making sure plans are in TL, I used a voucher that I purchased in TL.

To play back it seems Netflix have geolocation block, so I had VPN set on my smart TV was able to watch Netflix but in Turkey region.

  • If people here are on one of Optus' NBN Entertainer plans you get the standard Netflix sub for free.

    • +1

Their entertainer plan is $20 more per month than their other plans though.

      • True indeed. So probably still a shit deal lol.

Deep Dive into Turkish Consumer Law and Unfair Practices: Your Netflix Case

Under Turkish Consumer Law (No. 6502), specifically Article 8, Netflix is prohibited from engaging in "unfair commercial practices" that could harm consumers. This includes practices that are:

Misleading: Netflix cannot provide inaccurate or incomplete information about their services, especially regarding account closure and its implications. If the closure process or associated charges were not clearly communicated, it could be misleading.

Deceptive: Netflix cannot employ tactics that deceive consumers, such as charging for services no longer accessible after account closure. This constitutes a deceptive practice as you are essentially paying for something you cannot use.

    Did I use this, Yes
    Did it work, No

I'm pretty sure what we were doing went against the ToS, so I'm not sure it's worth making too much of a legal or moral argument on that front. It was a good ride while it lasted.

      • +1

Certainly probably did, but worth trying to use it for a refund, I just got charged 2 days ago lol but yes, was good while it lasted, not signing back up

  • +2

After this stunt, only a matter of time until the block password sharing for Turkey.

  • Game over all. If I went Australian plan 4 devices 4Kcan the other 3 households still use it? Or are they banning password sharing. My parents in separate homes use it. I use Kodi+Real Debrid and this is more convenance for the wife who does not sail.

    • +1

I wanted to know this too, says so in USA don't know about Australia.

    • Yes, password sharing is banned in Australia. Happened to me months ago.

      • What if you have your family members that keep travelling between two houses?

    • To share with another member not in your household, you would have to pay for the extra member. The 4 devices can only work in the same network.

      • Unless they come over to your house every 30 days and connect to your the wifi.. can't see anyone doing that lol

        • You could create a VPN server in your local network for them.

          • @Mistredo: Nah fk all that. Watch too much tv as it is, the other person can worry about themselves.

  • +1

I had netflix for a while now on Argentinia because if the kids wants to watch something. For myself, I use plex, radarr, sonarr, sabnzbd. Automates just about everything there is that comes out and I get it an hour after its been on netflix lol. If there's no solution for a cheap netflix I think its time to cancel.

    • +1

If you already have those *arrs, you just need to add overseerr for the kids ;)

      • With overseer, they need to browse and request for it, right?

The only thing missing is with netflix, they just spoon fed by it…

        • yeah, i think it shows popular shows/movies that you can instantly look at - as well as searching for whatever you want and then request it.

I jumped over to india and this METHOD WORKED.. Here are my steps:

Logged into PC on Netflix with VPN (using surfshark)
It asked for membership restart and price came up as 649INR ( roughly AU12$) for premium account
Gave westpac debit card and an Indian phone number (use quackr.io or sms24.me) for verification
Payment went through on the same Netflix turkish account.
Signed out of VPN and signed in on Netflix on TV and voila! it worked on TV as well as mobile without vpn.

Just watched 2 episodes of Brooklyn nine nine without any issue.
    Good luck everyone.

    • thank you, I can confirm it's working!!!

only hope they won't deactivate our accounts again….

    • Any free vpn's? I think surfshark is paid right?

      • -1

Good luck, I hope they don't have your accounts flagged. I refuse to give another cent until I am reimbursed the current month which they have stolen.

        • -5

Lol stolen. Think you were getting it cheap for years and doing the stealing. I got 10 days out of it almost for $10, not going to cry..

      • windscribe but limited amount of gb per month

    • +2

Why though? It was not Netflix Turkey that cancelled our accounts, so no matter which country you switch to, you will be cancelled.

      • Never know… could go a while before another purge

    • I got to payment method and it wouldn't accept my ING visa debit card sadly

      • Same for me, my ING visa debit card not being accepted either
'There appears to be a problem with the payment method you are trying to use.'

    • also worked for me but just hoping it will last! (or at least for the month that i've paid for)

    • +2

They'll just keep doing ban waves :/

    • -1

Hmm when I try to “reactivate” my membership with an Indian vpn running it comes up with an error and doesn’t proceed further. If I try to reactivate without a vpn it proceeds through fine with Aus prices. Anyone seen this and managed to get around it?

      • I happen to have an Indian mobile number and a credit card. VPN'ed to India, and it managed to get me the Indian subs.
Let's see how long it lasts!

      • +1

Was able to reactivate through India with these steps thanks to someone on another forum. Didn’t need an Indian phone number.
        I used nord vpn.

        To get around it,
        1. Sign in WITHOUT VPN, go as far as selecting your plan,
        2. Now activate your VPN to the Netflix country of choice,
        3. From the ' select your plan " screen go back to the previous screen and activate VPN,
        4. Select next and the payment will be in the country of choice prices.

Working fine now without VPN. I imagine this will get cancelled soon enough and then it well and truly will be the end of me trying and subscribing to Netflix.

        • If Netflix can cancel memberships in Turkey paid by international card then they can easily do the same for India.

          • @CodeXD: Hence why I said I imagine this will get cancelled soon enough.

    • Ran through this also - used Up for my card, went through MC verification.
Did not need an Indian based service for SMS auth - subscription reactivated… Now enjoying Avatar The Last Airbender <3

    • I wasnt required to verify my phone number. Straight through.
Having second thoughts now its $12 a month though :D

    • Worked for me, no need for indian phone number. Up bank requested a MFA text but that was it. Can confirm no issues off vpn. Will keep an eye out for any sudden changes to account. If this doesnt work ill try the gift card variation

      • Is there any free VPN server that we can connect to in India?

    • Thank you. This worked for me, though I didn't need an Indian phone number.

The one hiccup was that the credit card MFA didn't work in Vivaldi or Chrome, but did in Firefox.

      Cheers.

    • Looks like the account been deactivated again just after 2 days 🥹

      • OFC.
Another bank fraud charge back claim?

      • Indian ?
