Spotted promotional QR code on a tub of butter I bought this week. It says "Love us or your money back" but it seems more like "try us out, it's on us".

  • Claim period: Wednesday 30th April - Tuesday 3rd June 2025 AEST

    • Nothing should ever be cheap because it causes local companies to make less money, in theory. Are you Donald Trump?

      • -1

No and no. I get your point and I'm partially being devils advocate in that I try to buy Australian and see the value in it, but appreciate that it's a global economy and we all benefit from it. I actually upvoted your comment.

I was hoping my comment might draw out some of the usual racists and political commenters on other posts for Chinese/Indian cars, Huawei, Xiaomi, anything Jewish, etc. But it's free, so they're quiet. A free anything from those countries would send them into apoplexy.

    • +1

      https://www.industry.gov.au/anti-dumping-commission

It's illegal to dump goods; recently Mutti brand Italian tomatoes was investigated for this: https://www.afr.com/companies/agriculture/trade-officials-la… Of course, ColesWorth were happy to help them.

Fonterra are trying to sell their products division (Mainland, Western Star, etc.) and I suspect this dump has something to do with it. Fonterra have also stopped Bega (Australian, part owned by Andrew Forrest) from bidding on it, presumably to ensure they can keep Kiwi and Australian farmers being pinned down by poor milk pricing.

I buy Australian and commercial brands where I can because I can afford it and know the value in keeping the money in the country when possible. No, I'm not religious about it but it's a vague attempt to do the right thing. I also appreciate that farmers aren't some hick in overalls anymore, they're quite often $100m+ companies that keep the profits and claim the losses via the taxpayer; they're the greatest socialists in the country. Unfortunately, only ~20% products in ColesWorth are from Australian owned and made companies, so it's a losing battle to keep the money here.

I can appreciate that this offer is great for people financially struggling and the more freebies the better, for them. The majority of punters on this page (including me) aren't struggling and are just wanting a bargain. The hyperbole that hits these posts when it's Chinese or Indian vehicles (or other foreign products), particularly EVs, is substantial but because it's something for free, not a word is said.

There's a lot of hypocrites here!

  • Which cheddar would you guys recommend or prefer : Tasty, Extra Tasty, Vintage?

    • +1

Extra Tasty or Vintage - depending on the value proposition of your freebie. All other blocks are 25% bigger than the Vintage for the same price.

      • +1

Prefer vintage but each to their own

    • Last I had it, the vintage won. I haven't had Mainland cheese in years, ever since they hiked prices so much. This one wins

  • +1

Wish I read the comments before buying two cheeses on one transaction! Oh well, one free isn't bad.

Mainland is a prominent dairy brand owned by Fonterra Co-operative Group, a New Zealand-based multinational dairy company. Fonterra is one of the world's largest dairy exporters, responsible for approximately 30% of global dairy exports. In 2024, Fonterra reported a revenue of NZ$22.82 billion, making it New Zealand's largest company .

I suspect that Ozbargain, with a piece of cheese and a piece of butter each, could not make a rounding error in these revenues…

      • -2

        What is a co-operative in NZ ?

A co-operative is a member-owned and controlled business from which benefits are derived and distributed equitably on the basis of use. Co-operatives operate similarly to other businesses but they do have a number of unique characteristics.

        These include:

        • They are owned and democratically controlled by their members – the people who use the co-operative’s services or buy its goods, not by outside investors.
        • They return surplus revenues to their members in proportion to their use of the co-op, not in proportion to their investment or share ownership.
        • They meet their members’ needs rather than maximising the co-operative’s profit.

Even if it is the 'biggest' co-operative, I would not rip-off a co-operative, and that too of primary producers

        • +2

I dunno, it's literally listed as a promotion, and the terms and conditions are the same as any other giveaway or competition.

The usual ticket price is basically a crime anyway, so it goes both ways about ripping people off (whether that is this cooperative or Coles who are responsible, I don't know). I'll be pretty mad if I somehow don't get back the $17.30 I just blew on 2 small dairy items purely because I saw this promotion. It's an advertisement, to make you try it.

Bad faith ozbargaining would be making 20 new email addresses and $2 sim cards to get a trolley full of free butter, imo.

    • +2

I've purchased so much of this butter & cheese over the years I have no qualms grabbing a few for free, it's not like it's a small producer who might be financially impacted

  • Good promo- thanks OP!

  • thanks OP

  • Thanks for posting this great deal OP.
Love a freebie and 2 is even better. :-)

  • -3

remember, you are lying if u actually are in love with the butter. If you love that butter, don’t ask for money.
True love doesn’t let the money get in the way.
You hold that butter so tight.

  • So if we buy 1 butter and 1 cheese in one transaction, then is it considered 2 claims or we can repeat it second time?

    • +5

A maximum of 2 claims per individual are allowed, but 1 claim must be for a Buttersoft Participating Product and 1 claim must be for a Mainland cheese Participating Product. Each claim must be submitted separately. If both products are purchased in the same transaction, the Qualifying Purchase receipt must be submitted for each claim.

  • Bought vintage cheese and buttersoft. Both were sold out at one of the Woolies I went to.

  • What a day to be lactose intolerant… 🤪

  • +3

To anyone having doubts: love is a big word, and I personally don't apply it to inanimate things, ever. I might enjoy something. I might crave it. I might be addicted to it. But I don't "love" things. Not in the way I use that word.

So I know I will genuinely be able to claim. And I look forward to enjoy some good butter and cheese for free, which I enjoy even more :-)

    • Same logic with feedback surveys - I try to allocate my personal ratings rationally, so most customer service experiences can expect to be about a 5 out of 10. I don't think I'm ever likely to experience a 10/10 unfortunately but they can keep asking I guess.

Similarly, I don't believe "average" belongs on a spectrum from "poor" to "excellent"

  • +6

Mainland - your frind in the frudge!

  • +3

…so, can I refund it after getting the cashback?

    • Do stores even take change of mind returns these days? I thought they stopped doing it during covid.
Also, it is morally wrong, though I am sure you already know that.

      • +2

Yes, Woolworths no longer accepts change of mind returns—but I believe Coles still does. - but yes morally wrong to do this - and please dont do it

Woolies' policy is a bit ridiculous, in my opinion. For example, I once bought something thinking it was $3 because another customer had left it in the wrong spot under a yellow sticker. After paying, I realised it was actually $6. I explained the situation at the help desk, but they still refused to issue a refund.

        • +1

woolworths do exchanges, just not refunds :)

      • +2

The stores that do food returns would likely throw them in the bin for safety reasons. I found that out once when I tried to return an item with a soft packaging at Coles as I purchased the wrong flavour for my dad and wanted to swap. They threw it straight in the bin :( I felt terrible especially since they didn't say anything and just dumped it straight in the bin. This was precovid not sure what they would do now. I asked why and she said it was a safety risk as I could have tampered with the food or stored it inappropriately. I felt so bad but also wasn't keen to retrieve the item out of the gross bin.

        • +1

yes chilled/frozen items are discarded due to food safety

The poor promo guys having to deal with the wrath of OzBargain

    • I suspect that this offer will be abused by a minority of users too.

  • +4

    Mainland Buttersoft™ Salted 375g;

    $9.50
    Wow that’s pricey.

    • $7.50 at Woolworths and thought that was too much. Not as good as Lurpak either.

      • $9.5 at woolies for me, where you get it at 7.5? Sale?

        • +1

Got it 2 days ago. Didn’t see any sale ticket. Must have raised the price $2 in time for this promo. I noticed google said $7.50 on results search page just then for the salt reduced, but when the page loads it is $9.50. Hmmmm

        • +2

There was a price hike of $2 with today's price cycle changes.
Inflation right in front of our eyes.

          • @cooni: this is full on! Also bought @ $7.50 this week
wonder if the promo is to keep sales up, as the big supermarkets would probably threaten to remove the product line if sales dropped too much after the increase

      • Aldi $7.49

    • I was shocked too. I thought I saw it on Woolies website for $7.50 then when i went in store yesterday to purchase it was $9.50. The new catalogue and pricing started on 30/4 so maybe this just happened to have a price increase on the day the promotion started?
I could never pay this amount for a tub of butter but if the 100% cashback does come through it will be worth it to try this great butter product that has nothing but cream and salt.

    • Was 7.50 at Coles for Butter Soft 375 last week - today 9.50 Looks like I'll be buying the Aldi Naturally Soft 375 g for $6.49 from now on

  • +2

Wow that's a new low from WW! I bought on Monday for $7.50…

Free Butter - Lets spread the word !

  • +2

Geez, the terms and conditions on this, you'd think you were buying a house.

    • +1

  • +1

So we can now put the claim through right?

    • yes

  • -4

can I pay my ollie e-gift ? and get event cashback?

  • -3

Can I submit another claim with partner's emailID?

  • +1

Wow the butter is quite pricy, if claim is successful, we will be buying more.

  • +2

I haven't even tried it yet. How do they know I don't like it?

In 15 words or more, tell us about why your experience with your Mainland product has been less than satisfactory?*

    • +4

A couple of days ago it said "Provide an explanation in 15 words or more as to their experience with the Participating Product". As per step 5 in the OP.

Pretty sneaky if they're not going to honour it for people that wrote something positive.

      • +7

yes, seems T&Cs were updated yesterday, Friday 2nd May at 4.25pm:

        before as per OP:

Provide an explanation in 15 words or more as to their experience with the Participating Product

        now:

Provide an explanation in 15 words or more as to why their experience with the Participating Product has been less than satisfactory

        interesting that this wasn't corrected:

Note that Mainland Cheese Swiss Slices are actually 180g not 210g as stated in T&C

terms and conditions are a contract and can't be changed after a promotion has started, except perhaps in exceptional circumstances, else could be considered a breach of ACL

  • Has anyone actually recieved the gift card yet?

    • Once validated, the individual will receive a Digital Prepaid Mastercard (“Digital Card”) within ten (10) business days of validation to the email address specified in the claim.

      • This was previously 5 business days per the email once submitted

Your provisional claim has been received for validation. Please note, validation can take up to 5 business days.

        • +2

claim validation takes up to 5 business days => gift card received within 10 business days after claim validated, so up to 15 business days after claim submitted => by Wednesday 21st May if submitted on 30th April

  • Did anyone pay with Woolworths gift card?

    • +1

I did. A little worried it wont be approved.

      • Why not??

        • +1

There's like 30 terms and conditions so they're looking for any reason to not pay out. Might just be paranoid though.

          • +1

@Ezio: I'm yet to make a purchase so I'm contemplating whether I should or shouldn't use a gift card..

    • +1

Yes. Don’t see why that should make any difference.

    • Yes, I did.

And it was the shop that had my 10% monthly discount.

I'd assume they won't spend the time to look at things in that level of detail.

I might end up with enough profit to buy a Boost SIM after cashback (assuming the cashback increases soon, as it should following historical patterns). But even if they just refund the discounted amount, no worries :-)

  • -2

LOL gonna get OzBargained fo' sho (7,344 clicks on deal at the time of posting this comment). Cost of living crisis means people will simply make up BS reasons just to get money back, and it's gonna cost them enough money that they'll have to end the offer or flat out start rejecting claims.

    • +2

they'll have to end the offer

offer period clause in T&Cs doesn't include possibility of ending offer early, however:

If this offer is interfered with in any way, the claimant breaches these Terms and Conditions or the terms and conditions applicable to the Reward, or the offer is not capable of being conducted as reasonably anticipated due to any reason beyond the reasonable control of the Promoter, including but not limited to technical difficulties, unauthorised intervention or fraud, the Promoter reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to the fullest extent permitted by law (a) to disqualify any claimant; or (b) to modify, suspend, terminate or cancel the offer, as appropriate.

      website crashes => offer ends

      flat out start rejecting claims.

The Promoter reserves the right, at any time, to verify the validity of claims and claimant’s (including a claimant’s identity, age and place of residence) and reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who the Promoter has reason to believe has breached any of these Terms and Conditions, tampered with the claim process or engaged in any unlawful or other improper misconduct calculated to jeopardise fair and proper conduct of the offer. Errors and omissions may be accepted at the Promoter's sole discretion. Failure by the Promoter to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights. The Promoter's legal rights to recover damages or other compensation from such an offender are reserved.

      false identity => no reward

Claimants must retain a copy of their Qualifying Purchase receipt(s) as proof of purchase. Failure to produce the proof of purchase when requested may, in the absolute discretion of the Promoter, result in invalidation of a claimant’s claim(s).

      no proof => no reward

If any Reward is unavailable, the Promoter, in its discretion, reserves the right to substitute the Reward with a reward to the equal value and/or specification.

i.e. voucher for free Buttersoft / cheese instead of Mastercard <=== most likely to happen if excessive claims

Claimants consent to the Promoter using their name, likeness, image and/or voice in the event they are a successful claimant (including photograph, film and/or recording of the same) in any media for an unlimited period without remuneration for the purpose of this offer (including any outcome), and promoting any products manufactured, distributed and/or supplied by the Promoter.

if one refuses => no reward

      • -1

        Thanks for the detailed analysis.

I'd say people going to the offer via OzBargain would constitute "unauthorised intervention" and people submitting false claims (i.e. they clearly don't actually have a legitimate issue against the product) would constitute fraud (like not serious, criminal fraud, but just faking it for the purpose of claiming the offer), hence they can terminate or cancel the offer.

        • +3

I'd say people going to the offer via OzBargain would constitute "unauthorised intervention"

intervention = disruption => we're just promoting and discussing it here

don't actually have a legitimate issue against the product

T&Cs changed after promotion started => possibly illegal

        • people submitting false claims (i.e. they clearly don't actually have a legitimate issue against the product) would constitute fraud

there is no possible way they could judge if someone's individual experience was satisfactory or not.

In 15 words or more, tell us about why your experience with your Mainland product has been less than satisfactory

          • @GimmeCashback: My own experience is that the products are fine, great even, but the price is still about 50% more than what it should be, and thus I don't feel like I received great value for money despite the quality, and can't see much advantage over the Coles brand equivalent on the next shelf. So that's what I wrote in the field.

            • +1

@wetsandwich: the simple fact for me the products were expensive before the price rise now it's becoming a joke. Colesworth used to do specials on them regularly but no longer & at $9+ for butter when you can buy regular butter for around $4 (sure it's not the spreadable type unless you leave out of the fridge) and cheese prices have become crazy, good enough reason for being unhappy with the products

  • +6

Eagerly awaiting any reports of anyone receiving their refund..

    • Yeah no one yet. I put in my rebate soon after midnight because I hadn't gone to bed yet. Lol

    • Same…

      • Once validated, the individual will receive a Digital Prepaid Mastercard (“Digital Card”) within ten (10) business days of validation to the email address specified in the claim.

  • I am not getting any SMS verification, anyone having issues?

  • +11

That's really low, changing the t&c. I gave positive reviews because I enjoyed the products… I had no idea that might disqualify me 🤬. My reviews were made morning of 30/4.

  • I only given words about how good the cheese is. nothing bad about it… it's weird… will this stop us getting the cashback???

what bad things suppose to say about it..

    • It's for the marketing people to do their word cloud. They would be pretty stupid to reject a claim for not enough bad words then possibly lose a customer

    • +2

Didn't you think it was a risk to write a glowing review for a product where the promotion is labelled "Love Us or Your Money Back"?

  • Has anyone received the refund cards yet?

    • No

    • Once validated, the individual will receive a Digital Prepaid Mastercard (“Digital Card”) within ten (10) business days of validation to the email address specified in the claim.

    • +2

I'd hope we'll get another email when our claim is validated.

According to the claim email: "Your provisional claim has been received for validation. Please note, validation can take up to 5 business days."

Once I have that I will ask my partner to get some cheese and butter as well, but I'd like to be at that stage to be sure enough…
